From This Week with George Stephanopolous, some good news for those of us who want to be vaccinated. Remember, you minimize your risk of side effects by getting it a few weeks apart from your regular flu shot. I got my flu shot this week, I'm getting the pneumonia vaccine in two weeks and the swine flu shot two weeks after that:
Amid concerns that H1N1 swine flu vaccine will come too late this flu season, Health and Human Services Secretary told me this morning on ‘This Week’ that the vaccine will be available by the first week of October, 2 weeks earlier than previously expected.
“We are on track to have an ample supply rolling out by mid October, but we may have some early vaccine as early as the first full week in October. And we plan to get the vaccine rolling out the door as fast as it hits the production line.”
This week, DHHS released new research showing that one dose of the H1N1 vaccine will be enough to protect people from the virus rather than multiple doses.
“The earlier doses are probably going to be targeted to health care workers and other high priority groups, but the one dose means that people will be able to have a robust response in about 10 days of getting that first shot and that’s incredibly helpful,” Sebelius said.

That's my feeling too. I have never gotten a flu shot and I am a little fearful of getting this one because like you said things have moved rapidly. Just last week they thought it would require two shots and now it's just one. I wanna see this play out a bit more before they inject something into my body.

the past few years we have heard time after time that some medication has proven to have serious flaws. If you are taking pills that are found to be dangerous, you can stop taking them and hope any damage that has been done will not go farther. However when you have been injected with something, there's no way to undo that in any way.
Of the 1098 cases of Guillain-Barré Syndrome recorded nationwide by CDC surveillance that year, 532 were linked to the vaccination. Of those 532, there were 25 deaths. A total of 48,161,019 people were innoculated.
...I guess thats why Kathleen Sebelius gave immunity to vaccine manufacturers this time around?
Actually, the 2006 Patriot Act contained pharma immunity regarding vaccines. The Sebelius document allows for a compensation fund, if needed, for claims made against the drug manufacturers.

As a parent with a child that has been in the vaccine court for 8 years, I am siding with milquetoast here:
the Patriot Act set it up so she could do what she just did "declare" an emergency and give blanket immunity. You do have a right to civil action IF and only IF you can prove direct and intentional harm. Good luck getting those private records from the companies or testimonies from CEO's or government health officials to prove that kind of claim.
There is currently a case in federal court which could also set the current precedent to such a standard concerning the childhood vaccination court (which was supposed to be non-adversarial and based on the reality that some would be injured or killed from vaccines).

I'm skeptical of anything when it first comes out. I like to wait and see what the first reports are and whether or not, for the most part, it does what it is supposed to do. I feel this way about over the counter drugs as well as non-over the counter drugs.

The letter you cite is in reference to what happened in 1976. Of course we should be concerned about that. Results from the first round of testing (published in the Sept. 10 NEJM) of the current vaccine has shown it to be safe: "No deaths, serious adverse events, or adverse events of special interest were reported."

And I spoke to The New York Nurses Association about a week ago and ALL nurses who work in acute care hospitals, nursing homes etc. are being MANDATED to take the Swine Flu jab or to NOT COME TO WORK.
Basically it's either, "Take the jab or you're fired".
About 40% of the nurses do NOT want to take the jab and there is a show-down coming within a few weeks to see how this plays out.
What I find interesting is that PHYSICIANS are NOT MANDATED to take the jab because, get this, even though they are in immediate contact with sick patients just like nurses, THEY ARE NOT EMPLOYEES, therefore, they are not mandated.
If I were a nurse in New York and was MANDATED to take the jab or quit my job, I'd quit the f'ing job and reapply as AN INDEPENDENT CONTRACTOR.
That way I could be treated the same as the Big Shot Doctors.

I know there's a whole conspiracy thing about the vaccine, and I'm hoping it busts open in this thread, because I'm curious about it. And easily entertained.
I can't imagine how it could be divided along political lines, but I'm sure it is, for some reason. Just like everything else.
The only thing I can imagine from the right is that Obama invented the Swine flu just to encourage passage of his health care reform.
I did read some suspicions that it was engineered, although the source and the motive weren't openly speculated on. Perhaps I was meant to know already. (Oh! Him!!)

Here in GA when articles that discuss the swine flu vaccine are published online, the overwhelming response to the article by right-wingers is that President Obama plans to create panic about the swine flu to get republicans to vote for hcr. Little do they know that republicans could see thousands of people die from swine flu and not be affected by it at all. With some republicans in Congress, ideology always trumps reality.

I would advise anyone thinking about taking the vaccine to read about squalene before making up their mind. It is my understanding that the drug makers increased squalene content to stretch the gross amount of vaccine in order to move up delivery time.

As far as flu shots, just read the studies in the Lancet and latest journals that are produced by those without ties to the vaccine makers themselves. repeated studies have shown flu shots are not effective and in some cases can increase the risk of hospitalization.

LONDON - A new analysis of 40 years of research provides more evidence that flu shots are not as effective in the elderly as commonly believed. But health officials said older people should still be vaccinated...... The research, done by an international collaboration of scientists known as the Cochrane Review Group, found the vaccine is only about 28 percent effective when given to people over 65. Older people are particularly vulnerable to influenza.
When one gets a flu vaccine they are exposing themselves to doses of mercury 2-5x over what the EPA established as a safe exposure limit for adults.
Thimerosal contains ethyl mercury, a different form of the chemical. Ethyl mercury is metabolized differently than the toxic methyl form and excreted quickly from the body, without binding.
I think it used to be called methiolate. It was used on cuts. It had a skull and cross bones on the bottle to warn about consuming it. Now it's in vaccines. WTF?
There is research done by an NIH funded study (Burbacher et al) which contradicts what you stated.
One study that makes the claim to yours looked at ethyl vs methyl in the bloodstream ONLY of recipients. This study assumed that since it was not in the blood stream it had left the body and was "less harmful". The Burbacher study took it a step further. They gave apes the same dose related amounts given to children in the older vaccine schedule (when all shots had full amounts of thimerosal instead of trace amounts - none of the vaccines that contained mercury in the past as a perservative are completely mercury free because of residual left over from manufacturing - thus they can mislead by saying "preserrvative free" but still have mercury). The fate of the mercury was determined by tissue analysis and excretion. They ethyl-mercury was found to leave the bloodstream and not the body. When tissue analysis was performed on the brains of the apes it was found that mercury from ethyl sources concentrated in the brain tissue. The body converted the ethyl form to inorganic mercury and deposited in the brain. The results indicate that Methyl mercury compared to ethyl mercury is not a suitable reference for risk assessment from exposure to thimerosal-derived mercury.

Lots of fruits and fruit juices. I pass on the flu vacc every year. And I'll pass on all of them this year. Lots of veggie juices too.
Although, I may take some vitamins this year. Hell, even the nurses at the VA don't get them. Because I ask them. They do the same thing I do, And avoid crowded areas during peak flu season. If someone is sick at work, tell them to go home before they make everyone else sick.
But that's a tough one to do. Most people have to work. Sick or not.
if you get the flu. You do have to be careful though not to continue taking it beyond feeling REALLY bad and being symptomatic. (You can turn silver PERMANENTLY with too much in your system, but it's safe for a few days until you get over the hump).
Go out BEFORE you get sick and stock up on lots of regular 7-Up...no substitutes. Have aspirin or tylenol suppositories for fever (especially good if you're nauseated). 7-up is great for nausea/vomiting as it acts as an anti-emetic and is a good hydrating fluid. I recommend Nyquil for knocking yourself out at night. Better yet, hit your doctor up for about 10 Ambien in case you get sick. Sometimes the best way to ride through a bad bug is to SLEEP through it!!
Get anti-diarrhea medication OTC and keep some good soup broths on hand. Once you're over the worst you can have a friend pick up some chicken/veggie soup with matzo balls!
It's always a good idea to be prepared BEFORE you come down with ANY virus! And having a buddy to take care of you is always really sweet.
And speaking of buddies....pick up some masks so your friend won't get the bug too!!!
As a preventive, be very aware of dirty objects out in public: money, gasoline dispenser handles, shopping cart handles, door handles etc. They are generally filthy. Lots of regular hand-washing and keep your hands out of your eyes!!! Don't go to public events unless you MUST go.
I want to do all I can to keep my C&L friends healthy!!!!
Hopefully all this advise will be like carrying an umbrella out if it looks like rain. If you have the umbrella, odds are, it won't rain!

Just to be safe - don't come out of your house until March. Unless you're planning to spend some time IN a hospital, your chances of getting pneumonia are less than those of winning big in a soda cap giveaway. Are you over 60? Under 10? If not, the shots may be comforting, but they are as useful as wearing three seat belts. Overkill.
Isn't it funny how the UK is rife with the virus yet we don;t have people dying in droves from it.
For the most part it's passing around and running it's course like any other mild flu epidemic.
Just to put it into perspective for you:
The US has 5 times the population of the UK. (300M vs 62M)
Similarly the US has had 4 times as many confirmed cases as the UK. (43771 vs 11159)
But the US has had 10 times the dead from it than the UK. (302 vs 30)

Apparently, the UK Department of Health claims 12,000 die from flu complications. I think the estimate here is 20,000. I question these estimates...it's hard to know how accurate they are (either way, up or down).

While the price of visiting a Dr seems cheap to us,(in Mexico) to them, not so cheap.
In order to get health benefits, they have to pay into the system. If they don't have a job, they can't pay into the system. And there's plenty of open country where the poor somehow get along. No jobs out there in the country or the isolated fishing villages. All of the jobs are in the cities.
It's the employers responsibility to make sure these deductions are payed. Some do, most don't. And lots of space in between.
Might be useful as an argument for public option healthcare, those numbers are scary.

Not sure how draconian New York State is going to be on the H1N1 for the kids. I know for a fact that they can't mass immunize kids without slips from home.

We already have had a number of cases up here in Minnesota. At the University of Minnesota they have had a number of cases and during our State Fair about 40 or 50 4-H kids came down with it.
P.S. Being a cards patient I am supposed to get one, but not this year. Been getting them shots, and getting the flu anyhow, right along for a few years now. Screw it, I can go wothout the sore arm for 2 weeks if I'm gonna get sick anyhow!

A lot of comments here seem to think this a joking matter or want to turn it into yet another Dem VS Rep issue. That’s not why I commented to this thread. I think the H1N1 vaccine has been rushed by ramping up the content of an ingredient known to cause serious problems. In a short time American school age kids some whose parents may not even know anything about squalene-containing adjuvants or MF59 are going to be lining up at school or in health centers to receive the vaccine. Some will never even know that the vaccine was the cause of a future illness or conditions including autoimmune versions of arthritis, multiple sclerosis and others. Do your due diligence before letting your friend or loved one use the vaccine.

So I was at Cornell two weeks ago and got the flu (they are having an outbreak there; a student has died actually...). This means there's no point in getting the vaccine right?
Right. But tamiflu may help if it has only been a day or two.
The swine flu (H1N1) vaccine is only as "rushed" as every season's flu vaccine. I'm getting it, no doubt about it. My wife works in a hospital, and we have a newborn. I'm doing all I can. (The newborn is not getting it, BTW.)
Even without Sebelius's immunity, it would be next to impossible to sue the vaccine producer. Vaccines get a bad rap because in order to be effective they need to be given to lots and lots of otherwise healthy people. There are high odds that people will try to link some coincidental event to the vaccine.
I don't like the idea of injecting myself with thimerosal, but the high-thimerosal version of the flu vaccine has about 25 micrograms of mercury per dose. That's about the same amount of mercury as is in your average 8 oz. can of tuna. (But the tuna has all different chemical states of mercury as well as other metals.)
