Unemployment Numbers Hit New 26-Year High
By Susie Madrak Wednesday Dec 24, 2008 11:00amMore lucky duckies are home for Christmas:
The number of U.S. workers filing new claims for jobless benefits jumped by 30,000 to a 26-year peak last week, government data on Wednesday showed, as the country's year-long recession continued to chill the labor market.
Initial claims for state unemployment insurance benefits rose to a seasonally adjusted 586,000 in the week ended Dec 20 from a revised 556,000 the prior week, the Labor Department said. It was the highest since the week ended Nov. 27, 1982, when intial claims rose 612,000.
Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast 560,000 new claims versus a previously reported count of 554,000 the week before.
Let's look out for each other. It's bad out there.

The second reel.
That's how much has been spent on the War on (Some) Drugs for the past 40 years. All we have to show for it are prisons full of people who don't belong there because they had some governmentally-proscribed thing on them.
Now, with more and more people needing unemployment insurance, it's time to re-examine the effectiveness of government programs that don't work, re-allocate the money they get and divert it to things most needed. Just the 40 billion Uncle allocates to 'fight drugs' every year would be plenty, hmmm?
has never worked.
It's not about the public safety; it's about big bucks in the privatized prison business run by IMPORTANT Repignicans.
Regardless of the families torn asunder.
It is not your family that is valued.
I was a student then but I couldn't forget how grim things were in the 1981-82 year as unemployment was rocketing up to over 10%. I hope wherever y'all are you can enjoy this holiday in spite of this gloom.
Wasn't that how that closet case John Fund of the WSJ described the poor people who were lucky enough to get the earned income tax credit?
the numbers are actually higher.
If figured in the manner before they changed the methodology -

hovering around 12%
and at Shadow Government Stats - ranging upwards towards 16%

you can ACTUALLY blame Clinton. He's the one that changed the methodology.
....and fuck you!

I'd have been better off if I had stayed in San Francisco. I might be out of work, and virtually penniless, but on the plus side, I'd have a nice beautiful bridge to jump off.
and/or god forbid, homes...
Come on down to the keys...seriously. You won't freeze your ass off, and there's PLENTY of fish to be caught.
Alot of homeless people have been wintering here for decades.
being currently layed off, I'm hoping to keep the loan sharks at bay, but one never knows in this nutsy world.
Maybe it's because I'm getting old, but I just feel kind of sick to my stomach this holiday season. I thought that hard times might have our country adjusting our values and priorities, but as bas as the economy is I'm still not seeing it.
As a society, are we already past the point of no return?
Yes.
Yes.
way past point.
do you think an economy in decline, with at best 2% growth in GDP/GNP - and that is best case numbers - is going to be able to repay the trillions and trillions of debt that has been heaped on our backs and on future generations?
Its impossible.
and what kind of government does that historically lead to?
Remember their slogan in 2000? "HELP IS ON THE WAY"
Remember Bush trying to privatize Social security?
Fucking asshole!
expect the worse and hope for the best and you will never be dissapointed!, if you dont get what you want you'll live just as long and die just as happy, its allways darkest just before they catch you and put you away,
26 years ago the Greatest Republican Icon instituted the first of Uncle Milton's grand plans and there were instantly 12% unemployment in the US. 60% of family farmers were getting to listen to Willie Nelson try to save there farms from greedy banker. "Voodoo economics" became the "Trickle down theory" and "Regan Revolutions" was on.
From 1982 until now, if you weren't in the top 2% and didn't go bankrupt or starve, you can thank Bill Clinton.
Thanks to the Republicans, we can now look forward to 2009 and last gasp of "Free Trade and no oversight", no bid contract, Bush doctrine wars, and how wonderful the Regan Revolution has been. With any luck most of the people responsible for this shit will not be able to enjoy the fruits of their ill gotten gains from behind the bars that they should be behind by 2010.
Happy Holidays
I thought the high point in unemployment was 7.1 during the 80's ?
Merry Christmas everyone! And enjoy this great republican economy. Remember, our fundamentals is strong.
Just because your unemployed, doesn't mean you can't fight for important stuff like outlawing gay marriage, or cutting taxes on millionaires! Priorities peons! Save a trust-fund brat for the holidays!
Brought to you by John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, and your Congressional GOP Caucus. Standing in the way of progress, for over 100 years!
We hate the American people. Thank god 46% of them are so clueless they haven't figured it out yet, otherwise we would go extinct!
