(The Capsules - dispelling the stereotype Kansas is a flyover state)

Something domestic tonight - The Capsules, from Lawrence Kansas. A three piece band fronted by Julie Shields, whose vocals are mesmerizing (don't take my word for it). Together since 2002, with three albums and an ep to their credit, they aren't what you'd assume something from the midwest would be all about. But then, never judge books by their covers.

Don't Be So Sad is off their new album, Long Distance Dedication and it's available either as a download or (for those of you, like me who like those chunks of plastic) on CD. It is a haunting testimony to sadness and optimism - good stuff for these times.

Aside from their band website, they're also on MySpace (as most bands are these days . . which is a good thing) and their albums are available via CD Baby (the indie album online store that's been doing wonders for new talent).

I don't know what their touring/appearances thing is like. I would assume they are gigging around.

They are definitely worth a look-see and at least a listen.

(Blur - put Britpop on the map - and we're glad they did)

Blur tonight. From the Popscene ep from 1992 - Mace. I always loved this band. I could never quite figure out the whole Blur vs. Oasis thing - I suspect it was more a publicity device than anything else. It was a bit like the Beatles vs. Rolling Stones supposed rivalry in the 60s. It was and is still possible to like both bands and their music and not play favorites. Especially on a Friday night.

Life is too short anyway.

(The Cheek - new single out as we speak)

Something brand new tonight - in fact, it came out just a few hours ago. The Cheek are a new discovery, via MySpace and my friend Mig Schillace who is an endless source of what's new and interesting in the UK since he does run The Louisiana, one of the more popular clubs in the Bristol area.

As far as I know, The Cheek haven't been together all that long - maybe a little over a year. They've issued several singles and ep's and are in the process of finishing their debut album which is slated to come out next year, via A&M in the UK.

This track, Hung Up just came out and the 7" is available via their website.

I'm sensing a future here.

(The Ganjas - Mind Melting, new Millennium style)

Santiago Chile - doesn't ring any bells as a hotbed of psychedelia, does it? Just goes to show - what you think you know and what you know you know are two different things.

The Ganjas have been around since 2001, blazing their own particular trail of ear-piercing psych, becoming one of the most popular bands in Chile, at least from an underground standpoint.

This track, Sonic Redemption, is from an EP they put out in 2007.

Nice to know the Freak Flags are still waving.

(The Furze - Indie and Catchy, all at the same time)

An up-and-comer, by way of the vast musical gene pool known as MySpace. I admit to not knowing very much about The Furze, other than they're from the UK, have been together since 1997. In a previous incarnation as Kid Galahad and are on the indie label Three-Sixty Records and they have three albums and several eps out. This track Stolen Cars is one of their more recent endeavors.

I've listened to it a few dozen times so far and it seems to be holding up to the extended play test.

So far so good.

(The Nova Saints - Living proof music is far from dead)

The Nova Saints were one of the first bands I discovered on MySpace. It was pretty easy - just pointed my cursor at Random, clicking Go and there they were. I did a quick scan through their songs and was knocked out within the first few bars of the first track. They had just put out their first ep "The Draft" (it's also available on download), so I grabbed one and I've been playing it ever since.

Another great discovery who are not, as yet, on a label. But as I'm finding with a lot of acts on MySpace these days, they aren't waiting for a label but doing it all themselves. And the end results are more than worth it. I am starting to realize this is the wave of the future for music, and more power to them.

This track, Slow Down, is off that ep. It's also on their MySpace page player and is available. If you like this track, there are several new ones that haven't as yet come out on another ep or an album (which I understand they are working on).

As with all of these acts, support is crucial. Since they don't have anything like airplay or a major label to rely on, it's up to people who like them to support and encourage them to keep it going.

Seeing as this is the second band from Bristol I've featured so far, it's a pretty safe bet to assume there is a scene developing that needs further investigating.

And of course you'll be the first to know.

(The Transpersonals - would you buy a used mind from these lads?)

Another MySpace discovery. The Transpersonals. This time a bit of psych from Bristol England, a place where a lot (aside from Skins) seems to be happening. I think this track, Look At The Sun is off an ep they issued last year, but I'm not 100% certain of that.

You know the drill - check out their MySpace page, check out their gig list, check out what's new. They can use your support as I don't see them getting any mainstream radio airplay any lifetime soon.

(The Telescopes - Psych, Shoe-gazing, Space-rock, Noise-rock - just about covers all the bases)

One of the frustrating things about the Indie movement in the 90s was how quickly things were released and vanished. It was worse if you were a UK band and your discs were imported into the States. Unless you saw something and bought it right away, chances were you'd never see it again in your lifetime.

That was my experience with The Telescopes. Forming in the late 80s and disbanding, morphing, re-grouping, changing labels -it was hard, not only to pin them down style-wise, it was hard to pin down their releases. What little I heard of them I liked - they were, for me an extension of the Psychedelic stuff I'd been listening to since I was a teenager and they hit a distinctive chord with me from the get-go. The problem was, getting their stuff before they sold out.

Throughout their careers they've released a lot of material on a lot of different labels. A very small percentage of it I managed to get.

But I did get an ep that has been a favorite ever since. "Celeste" came out in 1991 during their stay with Creation Records and the track "All A Dreams" (not a typo) was glued to my headphones for several years after first hearing it.

Come to think of it, it still is.

(Catherine Wheel - Couldn't have been the 90s without them)

Don't know about you, but one of my favorite concerts of the 90s was when Catherine Wheel was opening act for The Charlatans (UK) at The Hollywood Palladium in 1995. It took me straight back to the Delicado/Dope/Red Mountain/Orange blossom-scented days of 1968 when the Shrine Exposition Hall concerts in L.A. went on every weekend and people spent hours mesmerized by whoever was on stage at the time - soaking up sounds.

Because of that association, those two bands that night in 1995 will always have a warm place in my heart. It pointed out to me that times don't change - perceptions do. Good music is timeless.

Catherine Wheel were a band with a long history - one that went from 1990 to 2000; the whole decade. And they were always changing and evolving and going in different directions. No two albums ever sounded the same. They had, and still have, a loyal following. So maybe including this track tonight isn't going to be much of a surprise. But it's nice to be reminded if you haven't played them lately.

This track was issued as part of the Show Me Mary ep, shortly after their second album Chrome was released. These Four Walls didn't wind up on an album until their compilation, "Like Cats and Dogs" of singles and b-sides was issued in 1996.

I think you'll get the idea they influenced a lot of bands in the 90s - and those bands would freely admit it.

(The Soft Boys - deceptively catchy)

Tonight it's The Soft Boys. Originally issued as part of an ep in 1980, just around the time they split and Robyn Hitchcock went solo - "Strange" didn't appear anywhere until 1993 when it was issued as part of a compilation ("Underwater Moonlight" disc 2) featuring singles and out-takes from their brief, but amazing career.

Hitchcock has always cited Syd Barrett (founding member of Pink Floyd) as an inspiration to his work. The inspiration is served well here. The first track on side one of this ep is Barrett's immortal "Vegetable Man", one of those odd instances where a song has achieved legend status by it's never being officially released, except on bootlegs. Strange, on the other hand, is one of the most compelling (albeit bizarre) pieces of music I've heard in years. I confess to having worn out my first copy of this EP, and spent months looking for a second copy.

If you're familiar with this song, you know what I'm talking about. If not . . .well just enjoy the ride.

Kim Thayil Opens Up About Unreleased Soundgarden Songs

Title: Toy Box (B-Side)
Artist: Soundgarden

Kim Thayil, the quiet Nigel Tufnel to Chris Cornell's David St. Hubbins, piped up to Rolling Stone about the unreleased Soundgarden tracks that will be on the upcoming b-side, and the incredibly minor, almost nonexistent obstacles standing in the way of a Soundgarden reunion:

What will be on the box set?
Stuff that was released only in Europe, Australia, and Japan, on movie soundtracks, sessions we did for John Peel in England, and then stuff that was never released — demo versions of things, alternate versions of songs, and songs that were recorded, but never released in any form, that we would simply have to mix and maybe re-edit, which would be like brand new Soundgarden songs. Songs that no one's heard, except for maybe a few people close to Soundgarden's circle.

What are some titles of these unreleased tracks?
"Dirty Candy," "Ocean Fronts," "Open Up," "Summation" — that was a pretty heavy song, in 5/4 time. "Ocean Fronts" is a little bit more of a trippy, arpeggiated song. A song called "Beast," which is going to sound exactly like the title. "Beast" and "Summation" were really strong songs live — from the mid-late '80s. I cannot believe those two songs have never been released. "No Shame" is another title. There's enough stuff out there to fill up three or four albums. There's enough original stuff that's been released but hasn't been compiled — B sides — to make an album. There's enough covers to make an album. There's enough remixes that Moby, Steve Fisk and Bill Rieflin did, that could constitute a pretty interesting EP. There's enough unreleased stuff to make an album. It's just getting the business and creative machine on the same page.

I'm salivating at the thought of an album's worth of Soundgarden covers. And the reunion:

Ben told me he thinks that if Soundgarden were to get back together, you guys could pick up exactly where you left off.
I think he's right. We all play enough and are acquainted with the material enough that I think it would take a few rehearsals. When Ben, Matt, and I got together with Tad, it was like falling off our bike and getting back on.

That said, could Soundgarden ever reunite?
People would have to want to. I think more importantly, tending to the merchandising catalog is something that would be satisfying for the band members and for the fans. I never say never ... but I'm not losing too much sleep over it, either.

I predict Coachella 2010 at the latest.
