Arrest_of_Henry_Louis_Gates_c19c7.jpg

As the story of the arrest of Professor Henry Gates has unfolded, this was bound to happen. Apparently, the Boston Police Department now has their own Mark Fuhrman:

A Boston police officer allegedly sent a mass e-mail using a disgraceful racial slur in referring to Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., prompting the commissioner to move immediately to fire the cop, the Herald has learned.

Officer Justin Barrett, 36, a two-year veteran assigned to District B-3, was placed on administrative leave pending a termination hearing yesterday afternoon. When a supervisor confronted Barrett about the e-mail - in which he called Gates a “jungle monkey” - he admitted to being the author, according to officials.

Police Commissioner Edward Davis immediately stripped the cop of his gun and badge, according to officials. Barrett, who could not immediately be reached, has no prior disciplinary history. Read on...

I've tried to understand the minds of scum like this, but it only ends in excruciating pain -- every time. With all the racist hate being spewed on right wing radio and television, it's no wonder guys like Barrett are worked up to the point where they can no longer control their hatred. I guess this would be another one of those "teachable moments?"

Golden Monkeyfist Award… The Golden Monkeyfist Awards are up. Monkeyfister his own self points out:

These awards are given to recognize smaller, unsung bloggers who are giving their all to stop the lies of the Right Wing Machine-- thus the graphic of the fist choking the Flying "Morans!" Monkey in mid-flight. These people are DOING IT-- Locally, on a small scale, within their communities, no budget, and one-on-one. And they are succeeding. This is my way of recognizing them, and their efforts.

The great thing about these awards is they are for small blogs and are nominated BY those who write small blogs. Congratulations to Blue Girl, Red State (no relation), winner of The True Golden Monkeyfist: for most exemplifying the spirit of living in a state, in a district where there is no Democratic Representation. And you might just recognize the winner of The Au Peer Award, voted by the bloggers themselves as best of the best. Congratulations, Driftglass. And congratulations to Monkeyfister for holding a 2007 award ceremony which completely avoided an embarrassing number by anyone named Britney.

Happy New Year from all of us at Crooks and Liars.

Hey folks, it's Blue Gal with another round up of blog posts you might have missed...

Hey ladies. My name is Manila Ryce and I'm a Scorpio. My hobbies include listening, playing shirtless guitar, and blogging at The Largest Minority.

It's time for some Thanksgiving leftovers. Ivan from Hip-Hop is Read prepared one hell of a bird stuffed with rap lyrics, Bill Maher, and the always enlightening Mumia Abu-Jamal. There's plenty of truth to go around. Take as much as you want and stop flirting with your cousin.

For those of you interested in Tofurkey instead because you think redirected consumption is the answer to environmental degradation, Socialism or Your Money Back would like to have a word with you. If you simply prefer Tofurkey because you enjoy the taste, well that's just weird.

Bush allowed over 150 executions to take place as governor of Texas, but as president he sure is comfortable with pardoning turkeys. Pottersville examines why the Bush admires Pakistan's cock of the walk so much.

Dr. Monkey Von Monkerstein has a nostalgic poo-flinging Thanksgiving story I think we can all relate to. Monkeys might not make good passengers, but they're great storytellers. The Doctor has a staff of millions banging away on typewriters.

Yikes! is hosting the last edition of Carnival of the Liberals for the year, and possibly forever if the rapture comes. The topic is the Separation of Church and State and why it's a groovy thing. Some of your favorite Godless heathens are there.

This is the very first review of David Lynch's 'Inland Empire' that bothers to focus on what the movie actually looks like. Thank you, Dennis Lym, for focusing.

Winding out the week...

For my money, there is no better MSM blog for tips on under-reported and/or context-free news than Dan Froomkin's White House Watch (even though Dan takes more time off than the president). His latest piece is The Lost Year.

I would be remiss if I didn't share this link to the Comic Curmudgeon, the site that I always reward myself with after a hard day of slaving over a hot keyboard. Today, Zippy spirals downward and The Shocker just stands there.

And of course, a shout out to my fellow Aristocrats - Sandy, Paul, and Blue Gal. (Oops, sorry ya bastidz, I just ran out of links).

Guest blogged by Mark Hoback of The Aristocrats.

UPDATE from Blue Gal: Mike his own self returns tomorrow, after the female Crooks and Liars staffers check him jealously for Joe Cocker groupie hickeys. We hear the "Hymn 4 My Soul" European Tour was amazing! (But we're glad to have you home, Mike honey.)

Sunday Talking Head Thread

coffeedonut.jpg(Photo of coffee and a cinnamon vanilla sugar honey brioche donut via Chodta.)

The Sunday Talking Head line-up is ready for perusal.

Sen. Leahy ought to be an excellent interview. Just based on his appearance at the habeas and rule of law restoration -- and his level of snarky retorts about the state of the rule of law at the moment -- that is one discussion that could get fun. Then again, it's Meet Tim Russert, so I'm not exactly getting my hopes up. It's early yet.

Also, the Zbig versus Kissinger discussion on CNN could get amusing. Last time those two were matched up on a foreign policy discussion, I got the distinct impression that Dr. Brzezenski wanted to laugh out loud at some of the things coming our of Dr. Kissinger's mouth. And, frankly, I can't say I blame him.

Michael Chertoff, the Bush Administration's head of Homeland Security is book on a number of shows to talk about, I'm certain, the at least two bombs that the British diffused. If an interviewer wanted to ask a question worth asking, how about this one: what ever happened to the nothing to fear but fear itself attitude? Because, frankly, the all fear alla time attitude of te Bush Administration wore thin a helluva long time ago with me.

I'll take this Kung Fu Monkey take on the world any day instead.  So, what's catching your eye on the blogs or in the news this morning?
