Blast from the Past: Schieffer now has his answer

I posted this on 7/17/05. Bob wanted to know why Bush never demanded to know who the leakers were. I think we have the answer today.
Bob Schieffer rips the White House

You know it's bad when Bob comes out throwing daggers at the President.

Digby nails it: "I see that Bob Schieffer takes the president to task for not just hauling in his top aides two years ago and telling them he wanted to know who talked to the press. This is a good question and one which I think the press should be asking every day. But then, Bush has always been a little cagey on this, hasn't he? Why you'd almost think he already knew all about it."

Alberto Gonzales Told Andy Card

A picture named FTN-Alberto_Plame.jpg

On CBS’s Face the Nation, host Bob Schieffer brought up the Frank Rich column:" ...it took Mr. Gonzales 12 more hours to inform the White House staff that it must “preserve all materials” As Think Progress notes: "Schieffer noted that this time gap would have “give[n] people time to shred documents and do any number of things.”

SCHIEFFER: Let me just ask you the obvious question, Mr. Attorney General. Did you tell anybody at the White House, get ready for this, here it comes?

GONZALES: I, I told one person, ah, in, in the White House of, of the notification, and, and —

SCHIEFFER: Who?

GONZALES: and immediately — ah, I told the chief of staff. And immediately the next morning, I told the President and, shortly thereafter, there was a notification sent out to all the members of the White House staff.

Talk left has further questions.

Think Progress has much more and is a must read in it's entirety: "So the one person who knew that an investigation was underway was Chief of Staff Andrew Card, who also happened to be aboard Air Force One in July 2003 with Ari Fleischer, Colin Powell, and the top secret State Department document that contained the identity of Valerie Wilson."

Inspired by Steve's piece in the Huffington Post, I posted the video from this exchange.

Steve gets it right: "I wish you could have seen Bob Schieffer's face as he came back from commercial break to his next guest, Senator Joe Biden, who he then took up this issue with. Bob Schieffer said to Joe Biden (I'm paraphrasing here...I'll post the transcript when it's available) "You know, everyone in The White House has these BlackBerrys. And you have to wonder what sort of message Andrew Card emailed at 8pm to the other people in The White House...what sort of documents could have been shredded in those 12 hours."

Interesting News Clip from 1994 on

From the memory hole on the Republicans (then in the
minority) using the filibuster on what Bob Schieffer calls "an
impressive list" of Democratic legislation (60), action's blocked using
"Stealth Filibuster's", etc.

"Once the exception, now the senate's favorite past time."

This doesn't focus on the judicial.

Mickey Klaus catches Rush Limbaugh Lying

via The American Street:

"Wow. Mickey Kaus actually paid $49.95 just to find out whether Gloria Borger and Bob Schieffer rather Rush Limbaugh were lying about a Ken Starr quote.

I’ll give you three guesses on who he determined was lying.

Hint: The person is does not work for PBS or CBS news.

Hey Mickey, I could have given you that answer for half the price!"

My friend is too kind. Does Klaus even have to bother asking?

John McCain latest not to back Delay

A picture named McCain_FTN.jpg<

SCHIEFFER :...Do you think he is becoming a liability to the Republican Party? Do you think he's been unfairly treated? What thoughts do you have on all this?

Video-WMP

McCAIN: I don't know if he's become a liability to the Republican Party or not. It think that's a judgment that Republicans in the House and others will make. Congressman DeLay on the subject on the trips, were paid for by people who shouldn't have paid for it, said that he was told that it was paid by legitimate organizations, these trips were paid for by them. I'll take him at his word. So I'm not in a position to make a judgment about Congressman DeLay.

More here from Sunday Morning Talk.

McCain definetly could have put a spin on Delay if he wanted to. Of course he's in a position to judge him and instead he passes. Add him to the growing list of republicans that are not supporting Delay. Josh Marshall should start a new list of the number of Republicans that are tired of Delay.

Also of note, McCain is clearly against the "Nuclear option" and in favor that the filibuster remains.

"You can only do two things with a base. You can sit on it and watch the world go by, or you can build on it. I believe we should build on it." - Colin Powell today on "Face The Nation," responding to Dick Cheney's comment that he would choose Rush Limbaugh over Colin Powell.

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell calmly rebutted the GOP Gospel According to Dick on today's "Face the Nation." Cheney said in that interview he thought Colin Powell had "left the Republican party."

"By almost every demographic indicate, the Republican party is losing. The number of people who have identified themselves as Republicans have dropped significantly into the low 20s, and not all of them identify themselves as Republicans," Powell said. "I think the Republican party needs to take a good look at itself and decide what kind of party are we."

Host Bob Schieffer asked his reaction to Rush Limbaugh's statement that "the only reason he's [Powell] is voting for him [Obama] is because Barack Obama is black. Is he calling you a racist?" Powell called the remarks "unfortunate."

"Mr. Limbaugh saw fit to dismiss all those reasons [I gave] and put it in a racial context and ignored all the reasons I listed for it," Powell said. He said in 50 years, he voted for the person he thought was the best qualified at that time to lead the nation, and that he also voted for Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy and Jimmy Carter.

"He shouldn't have a veto over what someone thinks. He's an entertainer, he is a radio figure and he is a significant one, but he's more than that.

"When the chairman of the RNC, Michael Steele, issues even the mildest of criticisms concerning Mr. Limbaugh, and then 24 hours later, the chairman of the RNC has to lay prostrate on the floor, apologizing for it; and when two congressmen offer the mildest criticism of Mr. Limbaugh, they too then 24 hours later have such pressure brought to bear on them that they too, had to change their view and apologize for criticizing him - well, if he's out there, he should be subject to criticism, just as I am subject to criticism, " he said.
