Jena 6/Hate Crime protests in DC

There's a huge turnout in DC today as thousands of African Americans marched on the Justice Department to demand racial equality from the justice system spurred on by the Jena 6 case. CNN does a nice job with its coverage today. The new AG, Mukasey was forced to respond and you can hear what he had to say in the above video....

'Jena Six' case sparks march on DC

Marchers surrounded the Justice Department headquarters on Friday to demand federal intervention in the "Jena Six" case and enforcement of hate crimes against those who hang nooses in public. On a chilly but clear day, busloads of people packed a downtown plaza seeking a big government response to small town injustices...read on

With religious fanatic DA's like this one---it's no wonder the African American community is up in arms...(Flashback)

There was a “press conference” today with the Jena 6 prosecutor DA Reed Walters. Or there was supposed to be a press conference but instead Walters played host for a gathering which sounded more like a revivalist tent meeting.

Reed: The only way and let me stress that, the only way that I believe that me, or this community has been able to endure the trauma that has been thrust upon us is through the prayers of the Christian people who have sent them up in this community. (loud applause) I firmly believe and am confident of the fact that had it not been for the direct intervention of the Lord Jesus Christ last Thursday, a disaster would have happened. You can quote me on that!...read on

Reed: The only way and let me stress that, the only way that I believe that me, or this community has been able to endure the trauma that has been thrust upon us is through the prayers of the Christian people who have sent them up in this community. You can quote me on that!

There was a "press conference" today with the Jena 6 prosecutor DA Reed Walters. Or there was supposed to be a press conference but instead Walters played host for a gathering which sounded more like a revivalist tent meeting. ,While reporters noted they had never before been allowed to bring cameras into the courtroom, Walters had quite a show set up complete with about 60 local residents - described as "white supporters of the DA" on CNN who broke into applause when he appeared. I guess they had loved his performance back in 2006 when Black students protested the hanging of nooses in the "white tree." Then Walters arrived at the school with a group of police and warned the peaceful student protest that “I could end your lives with the stroke of a pen.” This is the same Walters who consistently claimed "This case is not and never has been about race" and who "credits the 'imaginations' of African-Americans for the heightened racial tensions around the case." Today, his words were less overtly threatening but the racist message was just as clear.

Mike's Blog Round Up

I am very honored that Mike has asked me, noted conservative blogger Jon Swift, to fill his very big shoes and host this week's Blog Round Up. I'm not sure why he decided to reach across the aisle and choose a conservative like myself, though I imagine it must be extremely difficult to find liberals who are dependable enough to take on such a great responsibility. (If you are unfamiliar with my modest blog, here is a good place to start.)

But fear not, I am a very reasonable conservative, and instead of hitting you over the head with my ideology, I believe the subtle way I have arranged these links will convince you of the virtues of conservatism in the end.

One thing I have in common with many liberals is I just don't know what to say about this whole complicated Jena 6 situation so I would prefer to say nothing at all. But Kai at Zuky, Jill at Jack and Jill Politics, the Field Negro, the Thin Black Duke at Slant Truth and Elle seem to have plenty to say.

Dispatches from the Culture War tells you "How To Avoid Advancing the Gay Agenda." I plan to follow all of these recommendations.

Once you realize evolution is untrue, you start to doubt everything scientists tell us, such as whether the world is really round. Liberal Avenger finds some people who are keeping an open mind about the subject.

Electronic Village has posted a list of the "Top 10 Black Bloggers." Because I am completely colorblind I had no idea any of these bloggers were black.

Vidiot Speak concedes that Democrats will never beat Republicans. One reason might be, as Bark Bark Woof Woof points out, Republicans always stay one step ahead of Democrats in pioneering cutting-edge campaign tactics.

World-O-Crap introduces us to the work of Archibald P. Campbell, the genius behind the children's cartoon "Why Do the Terrorists Want To Hurt Me?" which I think every child should see.

Please send your tips to modestjonswift [at] gmail [dot] com. I will be using the very same stringent criteria used by the Bush Administration in hiring to decide what to link to, namely (in this order): 1) Nepotism (now is a good time to start that blog, Mom) 2) Cronyism 3) Bribery 4) Flattery and (in case of ties) 5) Quality of the candidate. And just as Fox News only features liberal pundits whom no one has ever heard of, I am going to try to link to smaller blogs rather than just to the usual suspects the way most liberal blogs do, with the notable exception of this blog, to which I am very grateful for inviting me to be a guest here this week.

Neo-Nazi Hate Group Posts Personal Information, Threatens Jena 6

(guest blogged by BillW)

jena-6-backlash.jpg As the hate site says: "In Case Anyone Wants To Deliver Justice." The editor of the website with a swastika at the top says on an audio at the site "I'd like to go down there and put a bullet in each one of those little black kids ..." When asked if he might have brought any harm to the Jena 6 by posting that, he told CNN "I don't know that doing justice can be considered doing harm."

Just sick. Pam has more:

As former White House press secretary Tony Snow said on an October 2003 edition of Fox News Sunday

"Here's the unmentionable secret: Racism isn't that big a deal any more. No sensible person supports it. Nobody of importance preaches it. It's rapidly becoming an ugly memory."

Nate has the Snow video....
