Frank Rich and I.F. Stone's Fight Against Propaganda

Alternet :

Today's media politics is all about saying the same few things over and over until they come to seem inevitable, even if -- especially if -- they're not true. Naturally, such systematic lying is hardly new. Nor is the media's ingrained habit of regurgitating these lies as news, then getting huffy when Stephen Colbert points it out during your cozy banquet with liars. But in an age when manufactured myths flood the increasingly corporatized airwaves -- and the hardest-hitting newscaster, Keith Olbermann, made his name cracking wise on ESPN -- it seems ever harder to tell the public something real.

This struggle to do so lies at the heart of two very different new books. One was written by a comfortably situated liberal columnist, the New York Times's Frank Rich; the other, Myra MacPherson's biography of the radical investigative journalist I.F. Stone, tells the still-heartening tale of a self-described Jeffersonian Marxist whose own not inconsiderable taste for punditry ultimately required him to build his own soapbox. The two journalists embody different approaches to telling truth to power.

Mike's Blog Round up

This Thursday is " The World Can't Wait" (to end the Bush Regime) Day. Find a protest rally in your area and go.

Last Left before Hooterville : This AA member is not buying Foley's "but I'm in rehab" excuse, then again, Foley's "best instincts" told him to diss Colbert and Katherine Harris. How could he then be such an "idiot of epic proportions " when it comes to instant messaging?

Pandagon : Don't tell them the CIA trained Bin Laden

Pinko Feminist Hellcat: Rights, Access, and Dignity

Liberal Avenger : Rightblogistan Meltdown?

Off the Beaten Path, "walked into a bar joke" edition: The princess, a doctor, a pirate, a Quaker, and a librarian. Guest round up by Blue Gal

Current TV

Current TV

Richard Johnson is reporting that Al Gore's network just hired "Madeleine Smithberg, co-creator and executive producer of "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," as its executive producer."

I hear she also hired Colbert off of an audition tape. Sounds like an excellent more.

Markos on The Colbert Report

Kos joined Stephen Colbert on The Report last night and had some fun discussing his new book, "Crashing the Gate," as Colbert played the conservative foil perfectly.

Markos: We have found that the Republicans are really good at telling you when you can be born, they're good at telling you when you can die, but not very good at the stuff in between.

Colbert: Here's the best way we can stop all this partisan bickering-One party...

Colbert shakes up Bill Kristol over PNAC ties

Bill Kristol, who is one of the major players in the group called PNAC, joined the set of the "Colbert Report," and I think was taken off guard right at the outset of the show because he had to answer questions that our media never asks. PNAC envisioned America attacking the Middle East since the middle '90's and for some inexplicable reason (that was a joke) the media never questions him or his members which have lined the walls of Bush's cabinet about PNAC and how it influenced our foreign policy, which led us to attack Iraq.

Colbert immediately called him on it and Kristol was quite embarrassed talking about it.

Colbert: Speaking of thinking alike, you were a member, or are a member of the New Project for the American Century, correct?

Kristol: I am.

Colbert: Were or am, am?

Kristol: Were and am.

Colbert: How's that project coming?

Kristol: well. it's..(stammering)

Colbert: How's the New American Century, looks good to me?

Kristol: Ahh--I think...hehe yea--I'm speechless..

Colbert: Really?

Kristol: Yea...we've sort of...the Project for the New American Century is just a few people..

Colbert: Come on, it’s a terrific New American Century, right?

Kristol: Well I think we do OK.

Colbert: You Rummy Wolfowitz, Cheney, Pearle, Feith, all you guys right?

Kristol (responds timidly): Well, we fought back after 9/11..

Just watch as Colbert turns every argument Bill has made about the Iraq war around on his head. As Pac says: "He left Kristol smoldering in ashes."

Arianna Huffington on The Colbert Report

TCR is quickly becoming a favorite of mine. His send up of a conservative commentator is subtly brilliant. Arianna joined him last night and was her very witty self during the segment as she quickly tried to get Colbert to change sides.

The Colbert Report "Hearts" John Gibson

Stephen Colbert tells us that he spent Christmas with John Gibson looking for Christmas insurgents.

There's a lot of great satire in this clip as Colbert is in top form. The writing is top notch and the show continually gets better. It took me a little while to get into the rhythm of the show, but Colbert has found an incredible voice. The "parrot" bit is worth the price of admission.

There are many other clips available here.

The Colbert Report: The Long War

Colbert highlights the new name for war on terror word that the pentagon is now using. TCR is on a roll and constantly coming up with the wittiest satire this side of The Daily Show.

What's fun with this segment is as Colbert spins the story in one direction-the graphic to the right of him tells the truth.

Olbermann on The Colbert Report

Keith Olbermann was a guest on "The Colbert Report,"last night. It was fun watching him being interviewed by the human parody of Bill O'Reilly.

Colbert is a hoot as he assumes the right wing persona perfectly. He responded to Keith's characterization of O'Reilly as being a bully and picking on people shorter than him as follows:

Colbert: But aren't these people who are shorter than him-(O'Reilly) are also people who hate America?

It's cool to see Olbermann outside of his Countdown studio and being joined by Stephen Colbert who has quickly turned into must-see TV.

The Colbert Report

Colbert thanks all Americans for voting against their own interests.

Stephen Colbert:

"You American workers haven't seen an increase in real wages since the 1970s...But are you rioting? No. You're voting for Republican candidates who give people like me tax cuts. You know what? I think that's your way of saying 'thank you.'"
