I guess veterans are the right wing's new favorite sacred cow. Having discovered, via the phony DHS domestic-terrorism controversy, that they can gleefully club liberals over the head with anything even remotely resembling a slight to the sacred honor of American veterans -- such slights, evidently, including insufficiently abject prostration -- Republicans are now wielding said club at every available opportunity.

Let's face it: the Right really hates that the folks in the military in fact love President Obama. And so propagating the notion that Democrats are "anti-military" is a big deal right now.

Last week, for instance, as the new federal hate-crimes bill was passing out of the House Judiciary Committee, Republican Rep. Tom Rooney of Florida tried to include veterans in the list of protections.

This was a classic right-wing twofer: Work to undermine the hate-crimes bill, and smear Democrats at the same time! Pretty, clever, eh?

Sure enough, after Glenn Beck coughed this one up Friday night, there was Sean Hannity last night, regurgitating Beck's stale hairball:

Hannity: Now, Congresswoman, including our soldiers in this bill would not belittle anybody. And I think you and Janet Napolitano need to revisit your opinion of our veterans.

Actually, Feeney's proposal would render the legislation moot and unconstitutional, because it would then be predicated on the idea of creating "protected classes." And, as has been already explained many times, hate-crimes bills aren't about creating "protected categories" -- they are strictly written to encompass the motives of the perpetrator:

The GOP Continues To Promote Failure and Corruption

Via The Stakeholder:

Republican Corruption Reigns Supreme -- Another Investigated Member Promoted by Republican Conference

Representative Tom Feeney (R-FL) became the second Republican Member of Congress under investigation to be promoted by the Republican Conference in less than a week.

"Apparently, the way to advance in the Republican conference is by being investigated for corruption. Isn't there a single Republican member who isn't corrupt who would be better suited for these jobs?” asked Jennifer Crider, Communications Director at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. “Clearly, Republicans haven’t learned their lesson about holding their Members accountable for their wrong doing." One would think the Grand Old Party would have learned a lesson from the thrashing they took in the '06 elections, but these people don't give up easily. After six years of unfettered power, they either don't realize or don't care how the public perceives their unethical behavior. Remember, with the GOP, it 'taint how you play the game, it's all about if you win or lose...

UPDATE: (SilentPatriot): Don't forget "The Daily Show"'s explanation of the taint that plagues the Beltway.

If the media is liberal, why aren't they all over this?

It is a shocking story involving former (2000) Florida House Speaker Tom Feeney, (currently US Rep for Florida's 24th district, "The Reaganest Republican"); a mysterious "suicide" by Raymond Lemme, of the Florida Inspector General's office; lies from the Valdosta GA police department investigating the crime scene, and the sworn testimony that Tom Feeney approached Clint Curtis requesting "vote-flipping" software for the 2000 election. read the full story

he case of the mysterious suicide of Raymond Lemme of the Florida Inspector General's office was reopened by Valdosta, Georgia police last December shortly after we broke the story of computer programmer Clint Curtis' sworn affidavit charging that he had built a "vote-rigging software prototype" at the request of Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL)!

Furthermore, graphic and disturbing photos from the crime scene -- said in the original police report to have not existed due to a failure in the camera's "flash memory cards" -- have recently been published on the web! read on

WHISTLEBLOWER AFFIDAVIT:

Programmer Built Vote Rigging Prototype at Republican Congressman's Request!
CLAIM: Rep. Tom Feeney (R-FL) Asked Company to Create E-Vote Fraud Software!

In stunning revelations set to rock the vote from Tallahassee to Capitol Hill -- and perhaps even a bit further up Pennsylvania Avenue -- a Florida computer programmer has now made remarkable claims in a detailed sworn affidavit, signed this morning and obtained exclusively by The BRAD BLOG

The programmer claims that he designed and built a "vote rigging" software program at the behest of then Florida Congressman, now U.S. Congressman, Republican Tom Feeney of Florida's 24th Congressional District.

Clint Curtis, 46, claims that he built the software for Feeney in 2000 while working at a sofware design and engineering company in Oviedo, Florida (Feeney's home district).

Curtis, in his affidavit, says that as technical advisor and programmer at Yang Enterprises, Inc. (YEI) he was present at company meetings where Feeney was present "on at least a dozen occasions".
