The Chinese government has begun a concerted campaign of economic threats against the United States, hinting that it may liquidate its vast holding of US treasuries if Washington imposes trade sanctions to force a yuan revaluation.
Two officials at leading Communist Party bodies have given interviews in recent days warning - for the first time - that Beijing may use its $1.33 trillion (£658bn) of foreign reserves as a political weapon to counter pressure from the US Congress. Shifts in Chinese policy are often announced through key think tanks and academies.
Described as China's "nuclear option" in the state media, such action could trigger a dollar crash at a time when the US currency is already breaking down through historic support levels.

I cant help wonder if the Barry Bond is just a distraction from the issue at hand. I could care less about Baseball, as it wont effect the outcome of our national security. No action on Iraqi interpreters for months
The Government will make no decision for several months on the plight of Iraqi interpreters working with the British army in Basra, the Defence Secretary warned this morning.
Numerous interpreters have been kidnapped, tortured and killed by Iraqi militiamen who accuse them of collaboration with their country's occupiers. The threat is so grave that the Danish Government recently flew all 60 of its interpreters back to Denmark when its troop contingent left Iraq.

Brown intervenes over the Iraqi interpreters denied political asylum
Gordon Brown has ordered an urgent review into the plight of 91 Iraqi translators abandoned by Britain to persecution and death as a political campaign in favour of granting them asylum gathered pace.
The Prime Minister has demanded an explanation for a decision to deny them any special favours, which aides insist that he knew nothing about.

Before you people all gratuitously pile on Barry Bonds, I'd strongly suggest reading former White House Ant-Terrorism Czar, Ricard A. Clarke's latest Cyber Punk novel "Breakpoint" to see what he has to say on the subject.
OK, I get it, Barry Bonds is not a nice person, personality-wise, and we all wish he'd take a page out of his Godfather, Willie Mays's book and do the Cuba Gooding Jr. "Jerry McGuire" dance.
Then again, why should he?

Who here has ever been on prescription medication to improve and/or enhance their performance in life, be it work or personal?
Or had their kids put on Ritalin, so they'd do better in school?
And speaking of the "precious children" what do we tell the 6 million plus kids, that we don't want to make cynical, or disillusion, that are currently on Ritalin?
Or does fall under the acceptable "mixed messages" category that we adults spoon-feed kids?
Here's a hypothetical question for you.
An affordable drug, with no side-effects, comes to the market, after going through a rigorous set of FDA clinical trials, that gives you a 100% photographic memory.*
Would you take it?
Would you counsel parents who want their kids to get into the best school that they can to not let their kids take that drug, even though every other kid in the class is taking it?
Would you want the President of The United States, as well as all his advisers, to take it?
If not, why not?
If so, then how is that any different than taking a regulated drug to enhance physical performance?

"Professional" Sports in America is a rigged game.
Think it's not? OK, sure, feel free to tell yourself that, and just ignore the fact that the majority of all World Series games for the better part of the last decade have gone the full 7 games, for some reason.
Major League Baseball, first and foremost, all personalities aside, is a multi-billion dollar business.
Can you name one business in the USA that generates over a billion dollars of revenue that runs from a morally ethical center?
Microsoft?
GE?
Time Warner?
Exxon-Mobile?
Blue Cross/Blue Shield?
Any of those?
Why should MLB, or any other sports league, be an exception to predatorial way America does business?
I really don't get the sports doping = bad idea thing.
Try to put yourself in the shoes of an adolescent/early 20s, naturally gifted athlete, in a culture that's money driven.
On the one hand, they can go the au natural route, work their butts off to get to the top of their game and at the end of that their reward is a $2 million dollar contract.
Or they can do all that, plus add a little chemical enhancement into their regimen and at the end of that their reward is a $20 million dollar a year contract.
Guarantee you that 90% of all these young professional athletes, when looking at these sets of numbers, and planning for their futures of themselves and their families are going to make the obvious choice.
There is one answer to all this.
Let's get honest and put a stop to the current hypocrisy and eliminate *all* performance drug testing in all "Professional" Sports.

Steroids first showed up in the 50's and 60's. We have no way of proving who did or didn't use steroids since then, so just to be safe, all sports records, including personal and team records, championships, etc., should be stricken from the records books.

What would be wrong with setting up a separate sports league where there was no drug testing and instead of what we have now, have these athletes pursue these regimens in a regulated, legal, manner under a doctor's supervision?

It's worth noting that anyone denying Barry Bonds (a black man) of the career HR record is doing it on behalf of Hank Aaron (another black man, at 755), not Babe Ruth (a white man, but only at 714). As the match-up is black v/ black, this is a character issue (which at worst is about Bonds' personality) rather than race.
While Bonds is going to carry a degree of taint, it's not going to drag him down enough to cost him a spot in the Hall of Fame, unlike Mark McGwire (a white man, but not such a run-away case for the HoF before allegations became serious enough). There's a price for everyone (fair or not), but it is more or less consistent across race.
Of course, this all probably becomes moot if Alex Rodriguez (someone not associated with performance enhancement -- and for the record, isn't white) breaks the record himself five or six years down the line. If you don't give Bonds an asterisk, you're not giving one to A-Rod either.
Hopefully this sort of respective is one that people can generally agree to. And hopefully that means we can then focus on other issues.

The whole sports "records" hoopla is bullshit, especially when comparing players from different eras. All these MLB hitters faced different pitchers, in different parks, with different equipment. Until the 70's pitchers routinely pitched complete games, and there was no such thing as a "closer."
Aaron played most of his home games in Atlanta and Milwaukee, which were "hitter-friendly" parks. Bonds spent his career in the National League, and has only been the DH in a handful of inter-league games. He long ago crushed the single-season and career walk records, and struck out far less than Babe Ruth ever did.
Ruth and Aaron were great hitters. Bonds still is. Yeah Bonds took steroids, as did many if not most of the other players of this era, including the pitchers.
Ask yourself this: How come other sports, including the Olympics, started banning and testing for steroids in the 70's and 80's, but baseball did nothing until 20 years later?
Could it have something to do with profits?

The "Impeach Bush" spam may not be as silly as it sounds.
Many site use filters that learn new words and phrases to filter based on their association with known spammy words. While this is, in theory, a good thing, it is subject to a number of potential abuses. By including selected phrases in with others that they expect to be filtered, spammers can game the system.
If they send a large number of e-mails containing some otherwise uncommon word or phrase along with other spammy content they increase the chance that subsequent messages containing that word or phrase will get filtered. If the word or phrase is in the subject they also increase the chance that people won't even read the subsequent message.
So this "Impeach Bush/Viagra" spam may be just a random ha-ha, but it might be a symptom of a larger (and largely unnoticed) attempt to prevent the delivery of subsequent messages containing the words "Impeach Bush." I don't know that to be the case, but I don't find the thought totally implausible either. It all depends on how much you trust the ethics of spammers and of the RNC's minions.
Nah, what am I saying. They wouldn't do anything sneaky, illegal, and annoying just on the off chance that it might marginally stifle public discourse. Would they?
