FNS: Ann Romney's Convenient Memory

When jockeying for the Republican presidential nomination and positioning, little things like supporting the opposition's platform can hurt you. Mitt Romney's past statements and support for pro-choice advocacy are big obstacles for the base and he's running from them as fast as he can. Apparently, selective amnesia is a more acceptable excuse than to stand up against government interference in the personal lives of citizens. When FOXNews Sunday's Chris Wallace asks Ann Romney about her financial support for pro-choice groups in the past, her response is "how can anyone expect you to remember every check you've written?".

You know, a check for $100, written in 1993, I believe is when the check was... I don't even remember writing the check. I know today, I wouldn't write the check. I mean, how do you remember all the checks you've written, you know, how many years ago was that?

Senility or fiscal irresponsibility? We report, you decide. ;)

Ha Ha.

Spend all your own dough, Romneyoids, till you've got enough to get comfortably by on. Lots of states coming up, lots of races. So much money just sitting in those accounts. Keep spending to the tune of more than a thousand bucks per vote. It's good for the country.

Nobody will care who you gave it to in a few months, or for what reasons. Break out the checkbook, send your urchins into the street. What a bunch of maroons.

LADY, Good Mormons don't LIE.

Mark Richards's picture

The old Sam Fox excuse.

Sam, as some C&L readers may remember during his Senate confirmation hearings to claim a prize as the maladministration's ambassador (party host) to Belgium that we learned he wrote out a check for $50,000 to fund "Swift" Boat "Veterans" for "Truth". the misfits who slandered John Kerry.

Kerry: You have no recollection of why you gave away $50,000?

Fox: I gave away $50,000 because I was asked to.

Kerry: But you have no recollection of who asked you to give away $50,000?

Fox: No, sir. I've given away sums much larger than that to a lot of other places and I can't tell you specifically who asked me, no.

He also referred to Kerry as "Mr. Senator", in keeping with Fox's clear demonstration of brilliance.

Since being rejected by the Committee, the maladministration pulled Fox's nomination, then sent him anyway.

At least Romney had the good sense not to lie and tell us that she wrote the check because "I was asked to".

Haggardists like the Romneys are supposed be good upright "stewards" with everything, including their money. I guess when you have millions to throw around, dropping a $100 bill isn't worth the time to pick it up, much less know that its use is aligned with your alleged "values".

hahaaaaaaaaaaaaaa's picture

Wow. She just made the dumbest rebuttal I have ever seen. Sadly, it's probably enough to win over some voters who hear her and say "Well she said it's okay, so it must be okay".

Maybe the question should be, "When did Mitt tell you to start being Pro Life to improve his republican image?"

Robt's picture

Ha-Ha-Ha-ha,
My memory is that of a republican. What you are getting from the present administration, you can count on a Romney Adm not being able to remember as well.

So a Vote for Romney is a vote for those same down home morman/christian conservative, (sons defending the country), family values and subprime fiascals that we all come to know and love.

Chris wallace could of asked her how their Mormon religion views Muslim ?

She's right, unless you've got photographic memory or are anal retentive about scrutinizing every penny you spend, it would be really hard to remember every check you've written in the last 15 years.

On the other hand, I know damn well I would never write a check to an anti-abortion group, or a white supremacy group, or "insert group I would never give money to because I don't believe in their message here".

Flip-flopper.

mudshark's picture

flip flop....this will not play well with the repub party....not the 29%s.....he'll get some of them...but he should keep her away from the media.....she suffers from the same ailment that Mitt does....a medical condition known as compulsery lying....

dejah thoris's picture

She also conveniently forgets how he told her to shut up in front of a group of reporters when she started to explain that Utah would be better for her health (she has MS), and not Massachusetts. He told her to shut up, which told ME that he would do ANYTHING to win the governorship, including risking his wife's health against her own better judgment. He probably told her to shut up in public and then reamed her a new one in private for jeopardizing his chances. He was lying to get into the governorship anyway.

At least with Elizabeth Edwards it's HER choice to keep supporting John in his bid; Ann Romney was apparently given no choice. Support the rich lying asshole in his bid or be put aside for someone who would.

Angry One's picture

Fresh off his underwhelming multi-million dollar victory in the Iowa straw poll Saturday, Mitt Romney's campaign is once again being dogged by, well, dogs. Appearing on Fox News with Chris Wallace, Romney was forced to once again defend his past penchant for rooftop canine waterboarding. At least Romney can take comfort in the availability of the perfect running mate for his White House run: Michael Vick.

For the details, see:
"Romney-Vick '08."

willie's picture

i guess there was no follow up question, oh say something like "if you are opposed to pro choice and,( here's the important part) have been as a root belief for a long time, why did you write the check in the first place. the issue is not about do you remember writing the check, it is about the support you provided for a cause you oppose" . she has learned repube debate tricks well, never debate the true issue, always make the debate about a minor detail as a way to prove the issue wrong, false, etc.

Rev. Rumdum's picture

Nice one Wallace: so when Mrs. Romney says one thing then says another, the question is "when did you change your mind?" When a non-Republican does the same, it's "how will you damage-control this flip-flop?"

dothehop's picture

It must be a Repug requirement now to have either senility, like their great hero Ronnie Raygun, or severely selective memory like the current administration.

She's as big a liar as he husband. No wonder their marriage has lasted so long. I remember everything political contribution I have ever made. Whether it was $1.00, $100.00 or $1 million, she made a donation that carries with it an implicit endorsement of the donee's agenda.

We need to hit this hard!

Ignominious-bush's picture

So she used to be a good person, but then she had to turn bad so her husband could be a good republican?

Robt's picture

Neo cons are not just pro life. Its finatically. She would remember why she wrote a check yrs ago when it was against her deep rooted Family values, now wouldn't she?

It would be like a Walton Family member writing a check to a Union yrs ago to support them in unionizing Wal Mart.

Iowans didn't have much to work with, the GOP had a very low turn out there.

Admit it, Mitt is a better choice for them that goofy Guliani, or missing McCain, tornado Tancredo, oh brother Brownback, hallowed Huckabee.

myiq2xu's picture

Give her a break, there's lots of possible reasons why she can't remember.

Maybe she can't remember because she was strung out on heroin at the time.

Maybe she can't recall because she received a traumatic brain injury when Mitt found out what she had done.

Maybe she forgot due to Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder caused by being strapped to the roof of the car during a drive to Florida.

Or maybe she's just embarrassed because it wasn't a donation, she was paying for "services."

I am pro-choice. Have I ever written any kind of cheque to an anti-abortion group? No. Why would I?

It's not about remembering cheques or the specific amount. It's about whether you'd give money to a group diametrically opposed to your beliefs.

So, either she...

Mrs. Romney "forgot" a check she wrote in 1993? Hey, cut her some slack. Easy to do, when she probably also "forgot" her ancestors had multiple wives and half the population of Utah are her cousins (hence the Mormon obsession with documenting family trees - gotta avoid marrying your half-brother or first cousin).

Mormons are so good at forgetting and rationalizing their long history of fantasy, delusion, megalomania, infighting, power-mongering, corruption, racism, polygamy, incest and murder.

They were the Scientologists of the 19th century, except that they were exponentially nuttier, weirder - and violent as junkyard dogs.

So she can't remember the check but she can remember that it was in 1993 or more appropriately 14 years ago!!! The only advantage to a Romney nomination is the several months of beatings this man would endure as the "flip, flopping governor of massachusetts." Oh Irony how we do love you.

Amusing. Y'know, she is right about one thing, though: I can't remember writing out hundreds, maybe even thousands of cheques over the years for a hell of a lot larger amounts of money - to things like the electric company, car insurance, rent, groceries... but I can remember writing cheques for piddling amounts for every charity I ever supported. Y'see, darlin' - It's not the amount. It's not writing the cheque. It's the recipient that makes it memorable.

But, man oh man, you gotta at least feel a bit sorry for these Stepford wife types - they're so used to having their husbands tell them what to think that when it comes to making up plausible excuses, they're just too out of practice.

Ooo, you and I have agreed on a lot of things, A.C., but I gotta call you on this one. What Mitt's missus does or does not remembering doing or not doing is one thing - and perfectly laughable - but a general smear of anyone based on their religion is just not on. You could condemn every Catholic for the Inquisition, any Protestant for the Salem Witch Trials, any Muslim for 9/11, and I'm not even going to go near the 'J' word for fear of rabid trolls. What we do as individuals is quite rightly our responsibility - but the only responsibility we have to history is to learn how to avoid repeating it. Not cool, m'man. Not cool.

He was as liberal as Teddy Kennedy when he ran--actually, he was to the left of Teddy. He won because he had a lousy opponent.

BTW, I write a LOT of checks, and if I was asked if I gave to a charity 10 years ago, you better believe I'd remember it.

Note that I did not attack the Mormon prophets and angels, or the specific teachings of their faith. I said some critical things about Mormons themselves. Given the facts of Mormon history, well, I think it's fair comment. Mormons took a very strange and violent path to the secure, prosperous, conservative, family-oriented religious community of today.

As a lapsed Catholic, I have lots of respect for religion - but very little for the churches that purport to practice it.

PBS did an excellent series on the history of the Mormons. It's available online at: http://www.pbs.org/mormons/ .

Hey-up, A.C., nice to see ya here. Summer shaking out to be good up in the far north? Winter here Down Under is an interesting experience.

I am aware of the less than salubrious past and even current present when it comes to the Mormon church (faults not unique to just them, but endemic to just about every other organised religious group on the planet) - but to slam someone for making a really lame excuse BECAUSE they're Mormon (or Catholic, or Presbyterian, or Hindu, or Rastafarian, or fillintheblank) is crossing a line.

Quite a few people - yourself, for example - didn't become a Catholic or a Mormon or a Hindu or a Methodist because they chose to be one; they were born and raised in that faith. Some stay. Some leave. Some change affliations. And while I, personally, think the Mormon religion is one of the less appealing variations on the theme to be found on offer, I prefer to keep my opinions 'pure' - the woman is a dingbat because she's a dingbat. Not because she's a Mormon. Let's try to separate the degrees of insanity into their proper boxes, is all.

I used to donate to Greenpeace. I stopped because their aims changed, not mine - they crossed a line when they broke into Monsanto's emailing list and spammed everyone on it; including me, because I subscribe to all sorts of mailing lists for things I may not necessarily support but wish to keep myself informed on. I prefer now to give to other sorts of less 'radical' and less well-known charities more devoted to conservation rather than self-promotion. Am I going to 'forget' I wrote a cheque or two out to Greenpeace in the past? Nah, but then... I'm not Mormon, y'see....

Hey, Klaus, you don't just move on. Recall what the republicans and the media did to every word that Thersea Heinz Kerry uttered.
Also, do you remember when we, the democratic party, was told to move on last? The 2000 elections. The one that was stolen from us.
The republicans and the media told us to move on. I don't think that will happen again.
Everything is fair game.
If someone believed that they felt strong enough to make a donation to an organization that supported choice in 1993, they don't just change their minds in 2007 because their husband is running for president. I want them to explain it to me. Tell me how they came to this change of heart and when this change occured. And I want to believe it.

You know, I can understand rooting out hypocrisy and all that, and having a hard stance on Candidates. But now you guys are trashing Romney's wife in personal attacks. How many of you know her? none of you. how many political offices is she running for? none, to my knowledge. Refute her argument if you like, even call her a liar -- but it stands to reason that either of the above quotes could be much more true. even the one about being mad at her husband and trying to ruin his political career is plausible. Jesus, don't people have anything better to do than sit around and trash some woman for a petty $100? do you even realize how much money these people throw away? 100 is a small contribution, and very likely WAS to get a hippy off her porch.

There are much more important articles on here for today than 'this asshole's wife gave 100 bucks to some program we actually agree with so we're gonna call her all kinds of stupid names cuz she doesn't care about the money she blew 10+ YEARS AGO. This is why Bill-o-Ramma gets people to believe him when he starts calling us hate sites... because you ppl have seriously just hated on this woman, HARD. Hate on her husband all you like, but until you find some legitimate reason that she is a piece of shit, it's shameful for you all to behave this way.
