Countdown: GOP Using Limbaugh's Attacks On Troops To Raise Campaign Cash
By Logan Murphy Friday Oct 05, 2007 11:15am
On Friday night's Countdown, Brandon Friedman, member of VoteVets.org and author, joined Keith Olbermann to discuss his Kos diary , When Chickenhawks Attack, and Rush Limbaugh's relentless assault on our troops. In a sign that the GOP is officially in full panic mode, they're not only defending Limbaugh, but they're shamelessly using the scandal to solicit campaign donations.

Friedman reads some of the threatening, hate letters Vote Vets has received from Rush's zombies, showing the need for push back so the public doesn't start to accept Limbaugh's attacks as truth.

I hate Rush Limbaugh. That is all.
When Friedman read those letters on the air I was appalled that there are so many brainwashed people out there. You know they would normally NEVER say something so disrespectful to soldiers, but Rush has them so much in his grasp that they don't even know what they're doing anymore. It's all about being loyal to Rush over anyone else--including soldiers who are taking bullets and explosions to their bodies in the name of freedom.
Arm-chair "patriots" writing letters to soldiers IN IRAQ telling them that THEY are PoS and attacking THEIR service while defending Limbaugh is beyond absurd.
And "why doesn't the GOP see a problem in defending Limbaugh?" These are the same people that saw no problem with wearing "Purple Heart" band-aides.
The GOP is dooming itself. The question is, are they burning all of their bridges because they no longer think they need them (ie, the fix is in or the coup is complete) or has their corruption just made them blind?
Dear Rush:
Bring it on, you fat f*ck!
It just shows us how sick and insecure the Rush supporters are. He's one sick SOB and they are climbing on board with him.
Rush and his ilk are becoming increasingly shrill and increasingly irrelevant. It is a joy to watch them in their demise. I am so gratified that finally, those who have been under attack by the GOP and it's minions are finally fighting back and that shows like Olbermann's provide them a platform to do so.
reich-wingers only claim to be "pro-military" because generally the troops are quite silent and do not publicly dissent. However, when the troops that see the truth about herr dubyah's failed war and are brave enough to speak out, the reich-wingers show their true hate and contempt for our soldiers.
Does nobody in Freeperland remember that McCarthy went down in flames after he started investigating the Army?
Just looking at the last few items on C&L...the Limbaugh panic, don't touch White Collar Criminals, etc., it is quite clear that the GOP is in its last throes.
Paul @ 4:
This is one of my major worries--that they seem to be so careless does make one wonder if they have no reason to worry about how they are perceived. Greg Palast writes that the fix is indeed in. One can only hope our side is on guard Nov 08--armed with video cameras, attorneys and citizen activists.
democratic runup polled: clinton 46 Obama 25 Edwards 9

Patty @ 11:
I think we would have seen that (or more of it) in '06. There's a limit to how much you can rig an election, and they may past that point already.
Got to love that hate spewed by reich-wingers to our troops...these "people" are so predictable.
Paul @ 4:
The coup is complete. Progressives blogs are simply entertainment nowdays. Progressives had their chance to make a difference and it just didn't work out.
We now have House Speaker Nancy "Impeachment Off The Table and We Can't Do Anything Because We Don't Have The Votes" Pelosi working against us.
Patty @ 11:
That was all used last time and it didn't help. I suggest throwing in the towel like Nancy Pelosi has. I'm not sure we should join them yet (aka "If you can't beat them, join them) like Nancy Pelosi recommends and is doing.
Paul @ 4:
On TV except for KO, nobody ever hears the vicious hatred spewed at the vets by dittoheads. They're the same sickos who saw nothing disgusting about a Rudy fundraiser costing $9.11. They happily mocked the troops with their purple bandaids. Coultergeist can't ever say anything even slightly disgusting according to them. Would a Mission Accomplished rally make their dittoheads explode? Gutless MSM keeps whining ''why don't Democrats just drop it since their poll #'s are so low?'' like it's their fault. Like they're the bad guys. Leave poor Rush alone! MSM also couldn't care less about venomous anti-troop hi-5'ing by dittoheads. GOP is living in Bizarro World with worthless MSM.
You have to give it to Rush, he is SOOO good at spinning and putting out an alternative view out there... he wouldn't still be in a job if he didn't... but I get tremendous pleasure at the fact that he still has to pee in a cup to prove that he is drug free...after years and years of advocating for the punishment of drug addicts... this hypocrite should be in jail.
They don't call Rush's listeners ditto heads for nothing... they're the ones that can't think for themselves...
i'd like to look at this issue from a shallow standpoint for a moment.

Joementum @ 12:
Really? The '06 election was considered the Revenge of the Electorate, yet the reality is that the Republicans maintained JUST enough control to stifle anything the Dems wanted to push through . Just like '04 when Bush won JUST enough votes to take Ohio and the country. And 2000 when Bush won JUST enough votes to take Florida even though not all of them had been counted .
Now look at your T.V. and notice the incremental push to annoint Hillary as the Dem choice for president. Then compare that with the seed being planted that the ONLY one that can knock her off is Guiliani. Then notice the occasional smears on her that keep popping up that are seperate from her ability to lead : hideous laugh, joined at the hip with Bill, can a woman be president ?, etc.
There are lots better candidates than Clinton and Guiliani, but here we are over one year away from the vote and the table is being set . You still think the fix isn't in ?
Dr. Matt @ 8:

same way they use the christians.
except for talk what have they done that they promised the fundies? tell them what they want to hear, get the vote, piss on them.
Patty @ 11:
Plus the fact that the majority dems capitualte on every issue... why? Something afoul is taking place.
iraqconcilable @ 19:
I posted yesterday that it is the media that is pushing Rudy and Hillary. I just hope the sheeple wake up and make their own decisions. My friends and I all say that Hillary shouldn't be the choice of dems. You have to wonder, who is doing the polling and who are they polling. It isw simple to fix the polls also.
LibertyLover @ 17:
Yeah, Rush is good at getting his message out. The problem is it's always a divisive message, and he's on the wrong side of the divide on this one. 70 percent of the country wants out of Iraq. And attacking veterans of the war is not the best way to influence public opinion. He might get away with it while he's preaching to his zombie choir, but it will never play with the general public.
If he had any sense he'd back down now. But he doesn't, and he won't. Even his anal cyst can't save him now.
iraqconcilable @ 19:
Great comment - I completely agree and can think of little to add except thank you for putting into words mine and many other's perpetual frustrations. I only wish more people realized that for all the hopes we have of electing a person who will change our nation's course, all the iconic significance of having our first woman president and all the polished messages we hear of Democrats wanting to stop this war - there are very few of them who truly intend to cause a ripple and disrupt the flow of funds to their corporate bosses. I'll take a Dem any day over a Repub on social and domestic policies but for foriegn policies and capitalist interests we are really dealing with the same beast in Hillary as we have the past 28 years of Bush/Clinton rule.
It's amazing so many of these weak-minded types that listen to Rush ONLY so easily forget (or never knew) that the soldiers they are sickeningly and amazingly attacking with such hate and vitriol are first and foremost AMERICANS, then they are soldiers. They aren't born soldiers they are born AMERICANS (just like those hate-filled Limbaugh listeners). They are defending their country's interests by being in the military, even if they dont agree with the policies of the mission. Defending the very right of free speech these unreasonable far-right wackos are using to such hateful abandon. There is no talking to sense to such folks, as they were never approachable anyway or even worthy to try it.
you would think with the "drive by media" (god i hate that phrase) and the msm being so unfair the wrong wingers would welcome the fairness doctrine back.
slippytoad @ 9:
---------------------------------
what they don't get is that attacking the rank and file military is not an attack on scary armed men--it's an attack on everybody's brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, wife, dad, mom, and your neighbor's kids--the military is composed of everyday people and all those people have everyday families, friends and neighbors. a whole bunch of regular people thrown together into a terrible mess. as more and more of them come home, more and more are going to tell their stories about what is really happening. it works a lot slower than the corporate media but it sticks because it is personal.
they may not get it because so few of their sons or daughters are there.
iraqconcilable @ 19:
The Republicans lost. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that's not the result they wanted. My point is that public sentiment has turned so far against the GOP, they can't simply flip a few election results and expect to come out on top. That's not to say they didn't try. As for Rudy and Hilllary -- I agree that they're getting pushed to the front by the news media, but that's a different issue.
The poll numbers for CONGRESS are low. Congress is 50% repugnacan right now. I think that explains it.
madmomma @ 2:
freedom spelled OIL!
slippytoad @ 9:
Maybe it's just me but Rush sounds a little panicky. He went after Wes Clark, a general, last week nicknaming him Ashley Wilkes and calling him some absurd name based on the conflict in Bosnia. I personally see the tide turning on Rush. Bad mouthing a general on Armed Services Radio cannot go well for him. What I mean to say is he seems desperate and perhaps this time he has gone to far. I do think there will be backlash against him from our Military. (I can only hope.......)
Template for letter to VoteVets from any Limbaugh ditto-head:
Dear Steenkin' VoteVets:
You rotten POS, you don't support my warped perception of the war and our military.
Waaaaahhhh.
Sincerely,
Armchair Chickenhawk
Ron @ 22:
Exactly. Hillary and Obama have sold out to big pharma with their programs to use tax dollars to subsidize the Insurance companies and both refuse to commit to getting us out of Iraq before 2013. Kucinich is the only candidate that has committed to getting the Insurance companies out of the healthcare business by having a single-payer healthcare system like the other top industrialized countries of the world. Kucinich has opposed the Iraq war and the authorization given to Bush from the start. He was the candidate arguing for the withdraw of US troops during the last presidential election. He is the candidate that truly represents the wishes of the people, so he will be swept under the carpet. Only a grass roots movement by the people can get Kucinich elected to save the country, but it needs to start now.
Save America. Kucinich 08
PS- Rush is a shitty little asshole. Pardon my language.
MarcyJ @ 31:
Oh, I think the backlash is in full force. I think it's a matter of a few days actually before something fairly dramatic happens. Hopefully he'll get his ass kicked off AFR.
there's no low which the mouth-breathers won't stoop to
[deleted - thank you so much for your concern]
I read C & L everyday and I have never commented. I think Rush Limbaugh is the epitome of what is wrong with American politics in the Bush years. I don't understand why most people who voted for him can't understand that it isn't only possible, but it is essential, that ALL Americans be FOR our troops and AGAINST this war (the two are not opposing views). I do have a bit of a problem with the title of this post though because it reminds me of a GOP tactic. Rush didn't attack "the troops"...only the troops that don't share his opinion of the war. While his venom for the free speech of those who have personally fought for it is despicable, he didn't attack the military as a whole. I fear that this is the same logic used to call into question the patriotism of those who are against the war (and therefore against the troops). Am I wrong? Just some food for thought. I have this fear that my hatred of the republican party and right wing nuts, will turn me into one of them (of course with completely opposite views).
If I hear "Rush is a great American patriot one more goddamned time I may just go out and buy the US flag, dunk it in pig fat, douse it in kerosene and light the damnable thing on fire; Limbaugh, the loudmouthed clown’s effigy!
thepoetryman @ 39:
Fat boy has never been, nor will he ever be a great American.I've sen this vitriol from his ditto-bots all week long on the various you-tube vids (got a good laugh off of them wondering why the video counter on him spinning the story never went over 215). What gets me is the fact that they take his side of the story over more credible sources every time, these dittiots talk about how others are not able to accept the truth and how liberals are out of touch, I realized years back that everything these people accuse others of doing is really something they themselves are guilty of doing. It's amazing that they are too stupid to realize this.
Did anyone notice the mental disconnect in the hate mail? The people defending Rush attacked the vets for supposedly misinterpreting Rush's phony soldiers comment, but then went on to call the people at Vote Vets phony soldiers! How does one achieve that kind of mental twisting without their heads exploding?
thepoetryman @ 39:

come on poetry guy that didn't even rime.
and to mrw, point taken.
Rush Limbaugh is the Greatest AMERICAN to EVER LIVE!
He killed more little yellow commies in Asia then all the other troops ...COMBINED! A jealous black tried to frag him in the terlit and the shrapnel to his rear end forced the US armed forces to send home their most decorated and efficient soldier... thats where that whole cyst thing came out, as the Noble Rush did not desire the limelight instead preferring to give HIS glory to the troops!
He overran more Nazi fortified positions in WW2 then the entire Canadian and British forces....
He killed more of those Godless Indian bastards then Custer!
And he invented deep fried cheese curds...
But of course the LIBRUL Jew Run Anti American Media never mentions that!!
;)
I smell your flag burning....Amerika hater!
:D
;).... just playing with ya.
Not only are Rush's comments disparaging to the troops, but are an insult to the nearly 70% of the American public who think that this war is a fiasco. To assume that those who are opposed to this war and this administration are incapable of thinking for themselves is laughable....In fact, i believe the true intent of this attack by the wing-nut punitry is actually a critique its own constituency...They just haven't figured it out yet!
slippytoad @ 35:
Why would they kick him off?... He is part of their psyop propaganda machine... He is also a truth insulating barrier for our Armed forces so they have a harder time getting their intellectual feet underneath them.
Whatever! You can do nothing with the Truth, but one can beat the crap out of a lie; until the Truth is reveled. Therefore, the Truth shall be told. There, now what? May God bless us all, and restore our Souls from fear to Peace.

I agree with one of the other poster. How can people in this country agree with rush limbaugh and write such outrageous to the very people that are fighting, in Iraq. Whether they are there for a good reason or not, they are fighting for our country. Which is something the piece of smelly turd limbaugh got out of, and why, he had boils on his ass. That right there tells the whole story of rush limbaugh. Nothing else need apply.

Joementum @ 5:
Hey Joe - I got seconds
If ditto-heads are writing letters to soldiers calling them names, I hope Vote-Vet turns these over to the authorities. Since they're fighting for the government, illegitimate as I believe it is, any threat aganist them probably carries a substantial penalty.
This morning the Dallas Morning Nudes had an editorial denouncing those who would waste time with any censure of rash limpballls. However, they did the same with the move to censure MoveOn (although they would argue that they found the term General Betrayus offensive as well). However, during World War II our soldiers listened to offensive announcers who would insult them like Tokyo Rose, and during Korea Seoul City Sue, but now it has to be an American like rash limpballs?
I'm having a ball watching and listening to Rush and his not-so-merry band of ditto-heads flame out. What they don't get about this mess they are stuck in is that the average person in the military is smart enough now to question why the war was started. Wars of the past were fought because there was a real or perceived threat that the average military person of that time felt a sense of duty to the country to fight. Not so, this war.
I sure do wish the lemmings following the war mantra would hurry up and get to the edge of the cliff. I'm sick of hearing them squeal.
Patty @ 11:
I agree... I think they will do anything to stay in power, even if it means looking the other way as another terrorist attack occurs.
Propaganda stooges like Limbaugh and his audience of ditto head zombies are irrelevant. The overwhelming majority of the American people are united in opposition to the endless slaughter of innocent people in Iraq, ours and theirs. What we are witnessing is the unmasking of a corporate warfare state in full defiance of popular sovereignty, reduced to threats and intimidation of its citizens.
I see Rush reads a prepared script. That never convinces me. If it's not in your heart, your just a parrot-- squack squack.
they're just disgusting pigs.
RESPONDING TO SEVERAL COMMENTS:
1) Rush Limbaugh is the typical Neo-Con. He has no problem with the spilling of American blood, as long as it is not his. He is a self-righteous boar with way too many piglets of a similar nature. Because of his piglets, he is making an obscene amount of money making obscene statements because of his built-in audience who can't stand confrontation. As long as his advertisement base stays in place, directing their spots to the Pius Piper's mice, he will stay on the air. It is all about money, as is the Iraqi War in general. How dare an American soldier implement his First Amendment rights, such as Rush does daily for profit, possibly upsetting his financial applecart. Making profit at the expense of a national military is the root condition of a Fascist state. Classic Straussianism. God + Country + Military + Profit = Morality. Anyone who disagrees is attacked as being immoral and unpatriotic. The problem is that Strauss, who was their hero, was a German (Hitler Youth) Jew, whose family left Germany to avoid extermination (no shedding of his blood), and an advocate of combining religion with nationalism and military to create the only conditions of individual morality. He proposed that foreign policy should be actuated through a brute-force natural state condition, similar to the war-relationships of the nation-states during Aristotle's time. He was also an atheist. The problem with his theory is just that. It's a theory...a flawed theory. And everything that he proposed was the opposite of what he was willing to do or believe. The classic chickenhawk. But, anything for power. Anything for profit. Lies included. Just like Hitler said.
2) Impeachment came off of the table immediately after the election. The Democrats had hoped to carry the Senate also by a staggering majority. Remember, the Senate is the ultimate jury. It did not happen. It would be silly to pursue a verdict against Cheney and Bush (in that order) and waste precious time that they already waste systematically through monotonous rhetorical time-consuming speeches. The articles of impeachment could have been sent, but why do it if there is not going to be a guilty verdict. It would make the Democrats look as stupid (and vindictive) as the Republicans looked in the Clinton impeachment. In this case, the Democrats remembered why they are there in the first place. So, the Democrats went about their legislative business. However, the Republicans were successful in protecting the wealthy on a few occasions, blocking legislation with spiteful votes. When they haven't been successful, Bush gets out the veto pen. To hell with the poor. Tell them to join the Army if they want health benefits. Impeachment is a waste of time without political might. But, lying to the country to make the case for a profiteering war is clearly grounds. I am not so sure that sexual misconduct is grounds, especially when it occurred during a time period where the government was shut down because the Republican controlled Congress would not agree to a budget, requiring the President's protective insulation to be laid off during the time period. The impeachment of Clinton was ridiculous. Socrates said, "Alas, is not living well the greatest revenge?" The Democrats held the higher ground.
3) The only two candidates that I have seen in the debates or on the stump that make any sense are Dennis Kucinich and Ron Paul. Kucinich may be a bit too far left for the entire country, but his idea of "full employment" is the re-invention of FDR'S New Deal. There are far too many people on the welfare roles who would just as soon work if the "at will" employers market system was not so brutal. Anyone who wants a job should be able to find a job...easily. The application process, any more, is a list of reasons for the employer to NOT hire the applicant and the "at will" condition gives them all of the empowerment that they need to hire the individual that will serve as the best butt-kisser, especially at the entry level. Employers tend to want way too much for way too little, and will not hire anyone who understands this. SSI in my home state is much easier to get than a job, even if you are educated. Plus, they get health benefits. It beats the hell out of working and pays about the same, too. He would be great for domestic policy. On the other side, Dr. Ron Paul is the only REAL Republican running for the office. All of the others are merely claiming too be Republican because they know that no Democrat will vote for them, and remember, ANYTHING...if it gets you elected. His ideas about the deficit and lessened dependence on foreign oil are critical to restructuring our national debt. But, a national debt helps the bond market and helps keep wealthy people just that much more wealthier, given that wealth is relative and money, believe it or not, is a limited resource. The more the country prints, the less it is worth. But wealth, on the other hand, fluctuates according to how poor the poor actually are. Wealth is true buying power, where sometimes money can be limited. Any way you put it, for both of these candidates, we are in a class warfare condition in this country. That's why the wealthy do not wanted it discussed as an agenda item, be they Republican or Democrat. And, of course, Hillary and Rudy never touch it.
Joe Watkins, MSNBC political analyst, is far worse than a chickenhawk. This boy is clearly an Uncle Tom carrying water for the wingnuts. It is amazing that those in the "Meow Corps" won't step forward to defend America. The worst that could happen is you could die or have some Drill Instructor's size 13 foot up your ass.

Retired Navy @ 56:
Oh my goodness, AMEN BROTHER!!!
Rush Limbaugh conditions people. His methods on some level might even be equated to brainwashing. It is not uncommon, but it is dangerous to democracy and freedom.
While Rush carries on with his daily diatribe his listeners tune-in to get a "rush" -- ergo the name "Rush". But that rush is negative. His followers would probably have withdrawal symptoms without their daily fix of negativity. That energy is transformed into spiteful feelings vocalized with hateful words. I believe that explains -- at least in part -- why people watch O'Reilly, listen to Limbaugh, or read Michael Savage and embellish Coulter's bias etc... and others who stir up their e_motions. It allows people to vent. However those media personalities steer their readers, listeners, viewers to vent at specific targets which is a distraction from thinking rationally with reasoned logic and even dealing with personal issues. Generally speaking, at the point someone begins to emulate a media persona is the moment when they lose a sense of self, self-identity, confidence and independent thought.
Furthermore the more one grows dependent on other's opinions the more powerless one becomes and insecure. Powerless translated means people who cannot think for them selves because they've been manipulated and conditioned. As a consequence problem-solving becomes a far-away, even foreign concept. In contrast self-empowerment allows us to think, use logic that lead to answers that solve problems and discover solutions.
The nation's ability to converse in rational political dialogue has been and continues to be thwarted and marginalized by media personas. The Rush Limbaughs, the Bill O'Reillys and the Ann Coulters subversion of democratic ideals comes at the expense of national unity, freedoms, individual rights and reasoned logic, et al. That is a very, very high price to pay!
It is just amazing how well certain Republicans deploy propaganda techniques. Over time, Americans are becomimg more aware and immune to these techniques. Disturbingly, there will always be some who, for whatever reason, simply cannot see the lies and will remain in the dark, ever fooled by the propagandist. Some supporters of LimpPaw fall into this camp.

Patty @ 7:
It's positively eerie how history is repeating itself. The right had absolutely no qualms about criticizing 'the troops' once it became apparent that there was a substantial cohort of antiwar people within their ranks. What gets lost in all the bloviating about returning Vietnam vets getting 'spit on' (for which there is no known documentation) is the degree to which Vietnam/ear troops were blamed for 'losing' that war. They were portrayed as a bunch of pot smoking, heroin addicted peaceniks who actively conspired against the mission.
Those of us who were actually there remember this, but the rest of the nation seems to have conveniently dissapreaed this info down the Memory HHole that is American National Historical Amnesia.
I will bet you dollars to doughnuts that when this whole thing finally craters, the neocons will blame two groups. The Dirty Fucking Peaceniks at home, and the troops in the field, who 'lost the war' for us.
The federal government is currently conducting more than 60 "stolen valor" investigations of individuals suspected of making false claims about their military records, according to the Department of Veteran's Affairs, and about 30 people nationwide have been arrested in the past year for crimes related to falsifying a military record.
Stolen valor typically occurs when someone falsifies documents or produces medals and awards from the military they didn't earn in order to qualify for veterans benefits.
Jeffrey Sullivan, the U.S. attorney in the Western District of Washington, prosecuted Jesse Macbeth of Tacoma, Wash., in the past year as well as five others who falsely claimed heroic military service.
Macbeth, who was sentenced to five months in prison last month, is the person Rush Limbaugh cited on his radio program as an example of a "phony soldier."
For some, federal officials said, the motive for stolen valor is psychological, as a former soldier yearns to be a hero. But for most, the motive is financial, a means of getting certain federal benefits and medical care that come with being a veteran.
