Democratic Debate #1375 Open Thread

CNN has decided to not include Dennis Kucinich, just as ABC and MSNBC did earlier this month. The GOP will be debating twice between now and the end of the month, it will be interesting to see if Rudy Giuliani, who has been getting schooled by Ron Paul, will be allowed to participate...

it will be interesting to see if Rudy Giuliani, who has been getting schooled by Ron Paul, will be allowed to participate…

The sad truth is that Ron Paul will be kicked out of the debates long before Rudy or Thompson. It will have nothing to do with numbers and everything to do with candidates living up to party/media stereotypes.

Brad's picture

Thompson bowed out already.

Love Dennis, but why on earth should he be allowed in this debate? He got ZERO percent in Nevada, if he should be in, hey, then so should all the C&L readers. Just because he filled out the right forms, got on the ballots, and is the smartest of all the candidates, still doesn't mean he's an automatic. If no one's voting for you, even after many many debates where he was included, it's simply not his time.

Sad, but true.

BO starts on the offensive.

Thanks. I fon't seem to have the plug-in :o(

I wish Dennis Kucinich was in it too. I think four people in a debate isn't asking too much. I don't know the corporate rules on this, and I agree there should be some rules, but Dennis is a voice this country needs as well. Peace.

web_geek's picture

Kucinich should be included because he is still in the race and has met the requirements. If CNN is going to have a debate of the Democratic candidates, all Democratic candidates should be allowed to participate. Period. Regardless of their "electability."

me and myself's picture

Kucinich is trying to reveal the truth behind 9/11 and Iraq war, that scares Disney, GE and Time Warner.

Having DK in is a complete waste of time.
He's not going to win. Period. So, would you rather hear more things that you/we already agree with Dennis on, or would you rather hear BO, Hillary, and Edwards, one of whom WILL be the next president, distinguish themselves from each other?
I don't need to hear Dennis, I already agree with him. I'm looking for things I can find good in the remaining.

RBK_4_Dennis_Kucinich's picture

To say that Dennis Kucinich has had many chances in previous debates to win over voters is ignoring the fact that he got less time than anyone else besides Mike Gravel in most debates. Clinton, Obama and BLITZER got nearly 3 times as much talking time in one debate as Dennis.

If we can't trust the election process. And I can't. Then we have to do something about it. New Hampshire was strange to say the least. Ohio in 2004 was criminal. And Florida in 2000 was obviously an inside job with Jeb Bush and Katherine Harris and James Baker, etc.

Don't think of yourself, think of all the people that haven't had a chance to hear what he says. His ideas should be a national agenda that citizens get behind and pressure their congresspeople to implement. If those ideas are silenced, nothing changes.

Oh so slightly O/T, but I'm DVRing this to watch it in fast forward.
Bill Maher has some Wall Street Journal dickwad denying that the greed of the rich is a problem. Within 2 minutes, he trumpeted the greatness of the economy because of low unemployment, and then turned around and said that the way to fix the economy was to (give tax cut to the richest people to) create jobs. Unemployment isn't a problem, but we need more jobs. Asshole.

He's the ONLY ONE we have some chance with.

The CNN commentary is idiotic. As usual. Am not holding my breath what MSMs will say.

There will be not much abt this tomorrow - the market is going to reopen, and crash.
The name of the game is DERIVATIVES, to the tune of $$ 2.1 TRILLION, evaporated. On the top of subprime debacle. It's not abt making money on the stock, but, possible total disintegration of monetary system, in US, and worldwide. Chicken come home to roost. $150 billion is laughable as a fix, but a terrible burden for us, taxpayers. They've raped us good. AIPAC rules.

NAFTA, GAT, the WTO, China Trade, and every other trade agreement that's passed in Congress has been passed with the help of either the leadership of or with the help of the Democratic Party, knowing that each and every one of those agreements was devoid of protections for workers, knowing that if you don't have workers' rights put into a trade agreement then workers here in the United States are going to see their own bargaining position undermined because corporations can move jobs out of the country to places where workers don't have any rights. -Dennis Kucinich

For those of us who can't watch, could we have some more direct quotes from the debate, at least samples of their words to give the gist, instead of terse remarks like "so-and-so just hit one up the middle," or "so-and-so just scored a jab"? Just a handful of words actually spoken would be a big help.

Obama: I want to be as careful going out (of Iraq) as we were going in. (me: we were careful going into Iraq, Obama? ARE YOU INSANE?).

Edwards: All combat troops will be out within one year.

Hillary: Basically turned her attention to Bush, and his attempt to bind the next president to the Iraq involvement.

You're not quoting Obama correctly. He said "I want to be as careful going out of Iraq as we were careless going in."

In other words, he wants a well thought out, responsible exit strategy that is in stark contrast to the haphazard clusterfuck that Bush gave us going into Iraq.

I'll take your misquote as an innocent mistake; hope you're not trying to be subversive here.

I kind of view it the same way , except I would hold Edwards' feet to the fire in regards to his statements on the poor/impoverished ; at least that's a start if he does anything there , which no one else really has..........

Exactly.

If he's talking it, he sure better BE walking it!

Edwards was the clear winner tonight and has once again proven that he's the most competent candidate. Unfortunately America is made up of sheep which will lead us to another loss in the election against corporate America and the republicans and finalize the loss of our country.

Monkaton's picture

Bill Clinton is once again displaying why he was such a self-serving President and politician. This is a guy that wasted most of his presidency. Bush is incompetent, Clinton is a sociopath. He does not possess the self-discipline to be a statesman. It's all about him and in the process he is willing to kill the Democrats' chances to win the White House, and gain a larger majority in Congress and Statehouses. Give it a rest Bill.

If he continues with his current role in the Hillary campaign he will drive a wedge in the party and ensure the Repos will win another one. Independents will go to McCain or any Repo besides Hillary. He can't keep his big mouth shut and stay out of the limelight. Take a lesson from your good friend Bush the First and say nice things about your wife and nothing bad about other Democrats. Act like you were once a President, if that's possible.

Proud American's picture

AMERICA

Are they (top-tier candidates marketed by the corporate giants) truly the model democrats ? Or are they the model of establishment and corporate interest paid-for- politicians that we fear will go astray from the democratic principles that the people hold value, once in power?

As I see it, in this important time of our history where WE need leaders that will actually practice our democratic principles, these "top-tier" candidates has failed to live up to it. Not Hillary, Not Obama, or Edwards. No one made any public statement that they oppose this kind of oppressive behavior.

AMERICA should look beyond the surface and watch and listen to what is being expressed that is coming from the candidates inside consistent with their actions. Their action to do what is necessary must be done NOW and not a promise to do so once elected. The BUSH policy of sticks and carots are being utilized before you. They hold the stick and you follow their carots. It is merely a political fishing expedition and their rhetorics are the carot ( a bait) to win your votes.

Is that vote going to really bring the troops home and will they truly end the war in IRAQ? Are they really going to bring to fruition a reform to the health care industry where no one will ever be denied medical care? We have an issue that has not even been debated...IMPEACHMENT and accountability for the crimes committed by the Bush Regime.

If they truly believe in Democracy.....and .....equality....., their behavior demostrate contrary to it. The campaign has just began in it's early stages and we see our candidates undignified. The campaign is becoming about the issues of RACE, SEX, GENDER the very facet that are not DEMOCRATIC. Even the role of the media excluding other viable candidates is a clear example of miles away from the DEMOCRACY that WE THE PEOPLE are accustomed and before our very own eyes seems to be broken.

NOT one of these "CANDIDATE" ( who are supposed to be running as DEMOCRAT) stood-up against those that violated our DEMOCRACY and defended those fellow DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES that have been violated and excluded? Are these the kind of leaders WE WANT ? If they would not defend their own, HOW do we expect them to defend us when OUR rights are violated?

Practice what you preach....

Don't give us EMPTY rhetorics.....

Edwards 08

Saw him in person on Saturday in Atlanta.

He answered my wife's question (she's a teacher): "NCLB, will have immediate radical changes to it and if those don't work, then it will be scrapped entirely"

If you're a teacher....he should be your top choice....the other candidates (even Kucinich) rarely bring this up....he's the only one besides Richardson that understands its an assault on education to destroy public education.

I am sorry. Dennis does not deserve to be on the stage anymore. How much money has he raised? If you are not raising money, I guess people are not feeling your message. Dennis was mayor of what city? Oh yeah, Cleveland. How did that turn out for him and Cleveland? Sorry Dennis, just get your party to support you on impeaching Cheney and then we will have another conversation.

eh..... this is why i don't watcht his stuff... i don't 'care' what they say.. i figure they're all liars in one way or another. What i want is their promises and what they'er able to do.. or the direction they're leaning to..

It really stinks that the msm has chosen the Democratic candidates for president. The best candidates have been ignored by the media because these candidates talk about substance. For one year, it's been nothing but an Obama/Clinton "food fight" and frankly I'm tired of it and bored with it. It's strange how all the Republican candidates get media coverage as if they are all viable, such as mussolini Guiliani and sleeping man Thompson. I won't be signing any petitions for presidential candidates. I'll vote in the primary on the 3rd Tuesday in April and it might be a write-in vote.

John Edwards, mature, level headed, in control, the best candidate for President.
When will people see this?
I hope that Hillary and Barack start slugging each other next time.

Paul's picture

If Kucinich is excluded from the debate, it isn't a debate. Big Media is appropriating for itself the role of deciding who or who will not be a candidate. God help the 5 corporations that control all broadcast news in this country if the FCC is ever restored to integrity.

Obama was right.

In November 1986…Hillary Clinton became Wal-Mart’s first female board member, a position…for which she accepted $15,000 a year…Her hourly rate was about 156 times that of a female Wal-Mart worker…Senator Clinton would not comment on her work with Wal-Mart…

http://www.bostonnow.com/blogs/oldmole/2007/12/09/hillary-clinton039s-walmart-connection-revisited

I don't exactly recall Wal-Mart being the domineering, nightmare of small-businesses and unskilled labor in 1986 that it has become since 1995. I don't see a reason why this should be used against Hillary in any context other than guilt by association. Lame tactic Obama.

ConcernedCanuck's picture

Edwards is by far the most intelligent and least childish....and he seems to have a PLAN!

SckofFknLiarz's picture

“Wal-Mart cannot be blamed on George W. Bush. The Arkansas-based company prospered under the state’s native son Bill Clinton when he was governor and president. Sam Walton and his wife, Helen, were close friends with the Clintons, and for several years, Hillary Clinton, whose corporate law firm represented Wal-Mart, served on the company’s board of directors. Bill Clinton’s `welfare reform’ has provided Wal-Mart with a ready workforce of women who have no choice but to accept the company’s poverty wages and discriminatory policies…”

Hillary also had the best reception upon entering the hall.

Edwards who I do not think would be a good president is looking best tonight. Well so far. If he mentions the Mill worker crap or talks about Mr. Clef Platte I will throw a brick through my TV.

Jim,
I'm sorry that you don't get it.

See, it isn't a matter of who will "win" or who you vote for.
It's called the principle of DEMOCRACY.
Letting the people's voice be heard, letting the people decide, FREELY, whom to listen to, whom to choose.

Q U E S T I O N:
What principles must one have to argue the necessity to quash the free exchange of ideas?
Why would I want to listen to three people discuss which shade of blue is preferred? What if I wish to know about green?
Where's THAT voice that gives impetus to those who prefer blue to explain why blue is preferable?

Keeping Dennis "OFF THE STAGE" allows the remainder to not have to defend how they aren't supporting and defending the Constitution NOW, granting them the stage to PROMISE CHANGE(of their mind as often as their underwear).

Hillary got "booed" good. About time the American people wake up and start caring that our country is getting looted and our rights are being stripped by these corporate greedy bastards who organize into groups such as the CFR and the Trilateral Commission and the Bilderberg Group etc. and who have run things for a long time.

TC's picture

after watching so many of these debates, I really get the vibe from Clinton and Obama that they operate/frame arguments according to advice of their "handlers" rather than from their own instincts and ideas like Edwards. I was not aware of Edwards' rhetoric in '04 so I have no cynicism re: how he has changed or whatever. Anyone else?

Fine, then I want to be in this debate. Why not? Why should MY ideas not be heard? Why not you? Duh, of course it's democracy, but at the Lincoln-Douglas debates there were only 2 candidates present as well. No philosophical analysis will change the fact that Dennis should not be included in deference of time and reality.
