oscar streaker [The Oscar Streaker from 1974] With Jon Stewart hosting during an election year, and an audience full of Communist-sympathizer Hollywood types, there's bound to be lots of political content as ever.   Batocchio has the Oscars drinking game posted (and it's not necessarily alcohol especially if you're covering the event for some blog, heh). Let us know what you see that's worthy.

Ain't watching.

Is there anything more vapid than an award show, especially an entertainment award show?

I am going to skip it this year. If say barock or hillary were up for a oscar , then i would watch it.
Streakers arent what they used to be today. Run naked thru a live event and HLS is on you like no tomorow.
Id wager to bet that you might even be charged with Terror charges if the camera man catches the streakers lack of .

I mean imagine Lynn cheney watching the oscars and something like that were to happen?

Is anyone aware of a link to a live webcast of the Oscars? Thanks

No Country For Old Men will win Best Picture and Best Directing, hands down. And so will Javier Bardem for Best Supporting Actor

From http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4356385/ -

A naked 33-year-old man named Robert Opal streaked briefly into view, flashing a peace sign, as NBC cameras cut away to avoid a full frontal assault, as it were. In a truly inspired bit of ad-libbing, the ever-poised David Niven — standing on stage to present an award — deadpanned, “The only laugh that man will ever get in his life is by stripping ... and showing his shortcomings.”

Sad thing about anual awards are that they have to give them out every year even if they aren't deserved.

Films like Braveheart and Gandhi deserve awards.

Then there are others that don't really deserve them.

I mean just look at the list.

A sure sign the final days are well upon us.

It's all about money-boosting sales-recouping costs and outlays not Artistry.

If that was the case ET would have won and not Gandhi.

There are so many awards shows anymore. Idiotic ones at that. Whats next, Best Buffed Muff awards?

I really hope Micheal Moore wins. That will surely set the wingers on fire. Can't wait to hear what Moore says. Pretty much the only reason we are having such a huge debate about health care now is that he made a big deal about it.

Also, anyone notice that for some reason GOP operative Drudge wants the Oscars to fail? Since yesterday he has had a huge banner predicting Oscar failure and low ratings before the g-damn show has even been telecast.

Check it out, its a list of progressive moments in Academy Award HistoryProgress at the Oscars

Q.- Who invented streaking?
A.- Someone who mistook Ben gay for Preparation H!

Yes I noticed. Wing Nuts like to believe they can create their own reality and everyone on the planet automatically takes their word for it.

Is there going to be any posting on the Don Siegelman injustice? If ever there was a political prisoner of this regime - it would be him - and the people of Alabama. Apparently he is also guilty of being Roman Catholic and receiving 90% of the African American vote. Oh, and nobody could get him to cheat on his wife. Damn. OK - how to make this on topic - it should be an Oscar winning movie - starring Harrison Ford - or perhaps Brad Pitt.

I suppose Drudge could have felt rejected because he wanted to MC and of course didn't and never will make the list.

Can you imagine Coulter or Limbaugh hosting the Oscars?

Ron Jeremy is a great man.

I just watched the opening, John Stewart's monoligue.

He BOMBED! It was awful. Anyone?

any answer to Dave at comment #4??

Dave @ 4:

Is anyone aware of a link to a live webcast of the Oscars? Thanks

No.

I watched the 60 Minutes report on Siegelman instead. It sickens me that the Bush regime can get away with framing a political opponent while the American public is obsessed with a bread and circus. No wonder we're screwed.

The first minute was rough, but I thought it finished out very well.

No Country For Old Men better get Best Picture. Or else.

List of nominations by category

Notice the films in "Best Documentary Feature", 4 of 5 deal with war, the other is Sicko

That ad lib by David Niven is a great moment in TV history. Right up there with Don Meredith, who, during a rout of the home team in Philadelphia, looked at a disgruntled Eagles fan in an ocean of empty seats flipping off the MNF camera, and said: There's one fan that says 'we're Number One'.

Happy Oscar Day - the gay Superbowl day!

guys...this is indeed a 4 hour commercial, however, since we have destroyed our manufacturing base, the entertainment industry is our number 1 export

but i really think the writers are still on strike, cuz lots of these line suck ass

Infuriating!

"Let us know what you see that’s worthy."

Why would anyone watch some more corporate gabbage anyway?

errrr.... garbage that is.

I don't care.

Also, I must admit, I didn't get out to see any of this last year's movies, so the Oscars where pretty much meaningless to me. Aside from Sicko, it didn't seem to me that any of the films that came through town here had much relevance. The only movie I really wanted to see never made it to town. That was "The Orphanage."

So far no movie has won more than one award.

While the Oscars were on 60 Minutes ran a story of Alabama Governor Don Siegelman. The video is on the web now. The White House blocked the first attempt to air this but it finally got aired during the Oscars.

dont forget, part of roosevelt's work program included putting writers, directors and actors back to work

roosevelt knew that in hard times, people need entertainment

its 60 minutes that you should be angry with for burying this story

but dont worry, it will be up on the web tonite

A boring event so far, but not sure why anyone would call "No Country for Old Men" or "There Will be Blood" crap. There are still a surprising number of excellent films produced every year. This year there were quite a lot.

But John Stewart is mailing it in tonight.

wow Edith Piaf chick- that was cool.

19 per cent @ 2:

Is there anything more vapid than an award show, especially an entertainment award show?

Yes. This story from CNN:

Obama responds to question about attempts to paint him as unpatriotic

Obama cited for not wearing American flag lapel pin, among other things

(CNN) -- Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama defended himself and his wife Sunday against suggestions that they are insufficiently patriotic.

During a town hall meeting in Lorain, Ohio, a reporter asked Obama about "an attempt by conservatives and Republicans to paint you as unpatriotic."

The reporter cited the fact that Obama once failed to put his hand over his heart while singing the national anthem.

Adapted screenplay: No Country for Old Men
(the Coens need a director)
Sound editing: Bourne Ultimatum
Sound mixing: Bourne Ultimatum
Actress: Marion Cotillard for La Vie en Rose
(the surprise of the evening so far)

Is the writers' strike really over? Because Jesus the writing sucks.

As previously noted I'll read the results tomorrow. If I remember.
In the mean time there's always the 'Razzies'. Now that's entertainment.

Tonight's "60 Minutes" broadcast on Knology Cable in Huntsville, Alabama, started off with no video and with the audio dropping in and out (and after a couple of minutes, the audio went completely out). All of the other channels were working properly, so this was a problem specifically with the local CBS affiliate, WHNT-19. It was 6:12pm when the problem was fixed, and the program was joined midway through the Siegelman story. WHNT-19 later displayed onscreen text indicating that there was a problem with CBS New York and that is was unknown if the program would be rebroadcast. This is bullcrap and pisses me off.

Fuck the fucking fuckers.

Worked fine out of L.A. on Direct TV

Oh also the story made me want to puke. It just reinforced my hatred for Republicans... and Alabama.

Editing: Bourne Ultimatum
(which has the most awards of any movie so far)
Special Award: Robert Boyle
(Hitchcock's production designer, 98 years old, tied with Marion Cotillard for the nest speech of the evening so far)

One last Siegelman post for people in the North Alabama WHNT-19 viewing area: WHNT has posted an apology for losing the feed on their website and are going to rebroadcast the Siegelman segment at 10pm Central. They also have a link to the segment at CBS's website. It's unfortunate that they screwed up the original broadcast, but they have made some effort to make amends.

The Robert Boyle speech was good. I wish I could work in the movies. I think it would really be fun. Of course it may interfere with my time on C+L so I guess it wouldn’t be that good. Oh hum.

Foreign Language Film: The Counterfeiters

Original Score: Atonement

The Best Documentary Short award for Freeheld, about a dying woman police officer who wanted her pension to go to her life partner, was given by U.S. soldiers in Iraq, none of whom would be allowed to give their death benefits to their life partmers.

Documentary Feature: Taxi to the Dark Side, about interrogation of Iraqis by U.S. soldiers

The Oscar for Best Original Screenplay goes to the most overrated screenplay to the most overrated movie of the year.

And the least surprisingh Oscar so far: Daniel Day Lewis for Best Actor

no country for old men. best director, best picture.

Directing: Joel and Ethan Coen for No Country For Old Men
Film: No Country For Old Men

I can say from secondhand experience that the Coens are soewhat unique among Quirky Young Trend-Setting Hollywood Auteurs in that they are not assholes. So I'm glad for them (even though I still think Barton Fink is their best movie).

Final multi-award rankings:

No Country For Old Men, four awards

Roman Catholic and black voters? Lynching offense. Lee Atwater may have had a deathbed conversion, but living Republicans still pray to Nixon and the Southern Strategy in secret grottoes. Irish priests with ammo caches in the basements of churches, ready to arm Negroe wildmen to attack the fragile blossom of Southern manhood and the manly resolve of Confederate Wimmin. Y'all realize the bulk of the US attorney firings was a Rovian smokescreen to cover up putting a star oppo investigator in Little Rock when Hillary used too be inevitable.

absolutely! and the corporations that still "allow" unions are so benevolent to their employees' every whim and take care of ALL of their health care needs, give them flexible working hours, provide safe AND healthy working conditions, care about their health AND welfare and give them all a livable wage... every single one of them... including the illegal aliens that they also hire on the side.

Is it just me, each year the Oscars program is worse than the year before. I watch, I admit it, mainly to see the dresses but still am interested in the best movie etc. At least Jon cracked a few good jokes. I don't know but think it is time to give it up. It used to be really something now it is just so-so and this year not even all that many dresses.

rightwing kooks gonna go nuts over all the non-American winners tonight!

nope...what they will go after is the documentary category

especially the winner

i think the academy made one error, and that was in this category....not in the winner, it is brilliant, but in not nominating king of kong

but whatever

you guys have to watch the post oscars bullshit

'WHO ARE YOU WEARING"

who gives a shite

Some great work nominated, some great wins. It's fine to deride the ceremony and the coverage as crap, but the work is not. All the documentary feature nominees, for instance, deal with important issues, including the Iraq war and our health care system. The winning film, Taxi to the Dark Side, is all about the current perversion of justice and torture. (For that matter, some Hollywood types, including George Clooney, Don Cheadle and Angelina Jolie have probably done more for Darfur than the Bush administration, certainly in terms of public awareness.) Juno is a mini-major/semi-indie flick, and There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men are both superb and anything but shallow Hollywood fare. The same goes for The Counterfeiters and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. The one big snub I'd say is that the Romanian film Four Months, Three Weeks and Two Days wasn't nominated. It's harrowing and unforgettable.

Stewart's jokes went over well at the Oscar party I attended. I was happy to see Day-Lewis win as deserved, and Cotillard was sweet. Tilda Swinton's speech was a wacky marvel. A record number of women were nominated for screenwriting, which was cool. Still, the highlight for me had to be the win for Once. Hansard was clearly nervous during his performance with his battered guitar, and his acceptance speech was as wonderful and sincere as the film itself. Having Irglova brought back out was unexpected and touching. Indie musicians and filmmakers, shooting a film for 100 grand over three weeks, expecting only to sell DVDs at their concerts, and they win an Oscar for a great little film. Well done.

Ummm... That wasn't his own material. He used "material" from crew members, a writer's assistant, and one or two of the other writers on the staff. That's why he's being investigated by the WGA at this very moment.
If you're a union member and you umm.... WRITE during a strike, that's called scabbing! Jesus Christ. Get real. Stewart was forced to unionize after he was caught threatening writers because they were attending union meetings. He was never on the strike line once. And yelled abusively at union members (as he does regularly at his writers) because he wanted to go back on air, like Leno.
Unions are the very reason you didn't work in a fucking sweat shop when you were five. Support them.
