Emails

Thanks On a quick note, I really appreciate all the dynamite tips C&Lers send me throughout the day. I couldn't do this without you, but I also get a lot of emails that instruct me to go here and or look this up with no explanation or context. I receive 500-700 emails a day and I always just delete those emails. I don't have time to track down the meaning of them all. I haven't said this before and I should have already.

If you have a tip or an article that you want me, Nicole or anyone from C&L to read, please include the url and the body of the article with a good title in the subject line so I don't miss it and can take a look at it while I'm going through my inbox. I don't want you to waste your time and effort...And I'm sorry I haven't had the time to respond to as many as I used to.

Also, feel free to send me any video or audio clips with a short write up that you find too. I'm always open to a little help from my friends. Just let me know how you'd like to be identified for the hat tip...

LOL lets just call it mission humanly impossible.

maybe if you all made a post with a "sticky" on it, we could submit them there, in the correct format, and hopefully prevent sending you multiple emails with the same topic or link.

love the site though.

oh, and first? I think I got first..

burnt's picture

nope, no first. :(

Thanks for clarifying - I love this site. I've sent a few tips and never received anything (although to be fair most of the time you guys beat me to it anyway =)) I've always put the URL in the body though, never the subject. So now I know, and knowing is the (easiest) part of the game.

John, just out of curiosity, you may know someone in my family - a fellow musician, pianist, living in Carmel by the name of Bob Phillips? Musicians tend to be kinda tight so i was just wondering.

Thanks for the hard work - nice job =)

And I used to wonder how Bush could have deleted 5 million Emails!

I haven't submitted any tips but if I do I will keep Mr. Amato's suggestions in mind.  Usually, everyone beats me to the good stuff anyway.  I usually surf a lot of foreign news sources so I happen to see a different take on a topic I'll submit it.

Bush deleted the 5 million hate-emails.

A bit OT, but does anyone else's computer FREEZE UP when they submit a comment? Sometimes mine freezes up so long (30 minutes) I have use "control + alt. + delete" to get right out of C & L. It's far worse if I quote someone else's comment.

I have a super-high-speed cable connection (live in Korea, it's fibre optic cable, and one of the fastest in the world.)

Is it at my end, the sheer volume of users, or... I dunno? PLEASE help!

I had hundreds when I got home from vacation (7 weeks). I just deleted them all, sight unseen. If it was important, they could mail me again, but no one did.

Guess you can't do that, eh?

His minions did it. I doubt he knows how to access e-mail.

And I'm not talking about spam either. I used to be able to email many more readers back, but the primary season has been so busy...

I'm not sure what the story is. There are times when my computer will spend forever looking for the C&L website and other times when the quotes won't work so then I have to cut and paste someone elses quote in order to make my response. Rarely do I have any problems making comments though.

It's a variety of things. There's a ton of stuff that downloads when you bring up the page: graphics, embeds (from a variety of sources), ads, etc. On older systems, it can lock up pretty easily. It looks like blogads was a problem for blogspot people this weekend and it may have been hanging up our site as well.

Yo, E Rocks!'s picture

Yeah, I remember getting a reply to a tip few years ago, which I really appreciated, and I haven't submitted any tips lately because I just haven't had the time to formulate them myself. I normally insert what tip I have, come times in a cajoling manner, in the comments when you inevitably run the story, anyway.

(not as blatant as this) TIP: COuld you have short notice, saying basically what you've said in this post, pop-up when people click on the submission link? I'm thinking a nice CSS effect, that "shades" the main page and loads a little window with a confirmation button. I don't know if IE can do this, but I've seen it often enough in Mac sites supporting Safari and Firefox. Also don't know enough abut CSS to really know what code it would be.

eek.

Shut off the AJAX commenting at the bottom of the page. Sorry...back to typing HTML code. It's the only way around your problem. You have to do it over again if you delete cookies.

Edwin's picture

I have no problem getting into C&L; it comes right up, quickly. I only have difficulty with comments. Especially on threads with a lot of comments. I sometimes avoid those completely!!!!

[at 17 Acting Patriotic][nice handle, by the way] I'll try the "AJAX thing", but I know nothing about cookies. Not a computer guy.

Thanks everyone for the tips.

Edwin's picture

OK. I turned off AJAX commenting, tried posting on this day's two busiest threads, and it was a "zillion" times better. Good tip to know. Thank you.

Thanks so much C&L for all the hard work. I read this site every single day and it is the best.

For me, Primary Source of news along with BBC WorldNews and and somewhat centrist CNN.

When a major Conservative University in the south (Auburn University) has its English Department referring to the Crooks&Liars website to instruct college students how to write, form arguments, and analyze politics, then you know that you John, and the rest of the team are doing a heckuva great job, johnnie boy. lol.

by the way John, Why not take this website to the next level and integrate a sort of talk-show element to this website? Maybe something like the "Young Turks"? I think that would be pretty cool and would definitely take the interaction of this website to a completely new level. and, that could mean more users, more interaction, and more average user time on this website which all equates MORE MONEY. lol, just an idea from my entreprenuerly-infectious head of mine. lol

good luck

John,
that is going to be just magnificent. that is the way to go! i can't wait. awesome.

by the way, i really enjoyed the phone-interview you had with the young turks with Cenk about O'Reilly and his Huffington-tirade. Nice job!

and must i say, the fact that you replied to my "comment" makes me feel like im talking to a celebrity. but wait, aren't you? I once saw CNN actually use a screen shot of Crooks&Liars. I was impressed.

Anyhow, keep up the great work. I really appreciate what yall do. Immean look, I live in the middle of Alabama, the bastion of conservatism, so I need a dose of objectivity that C&L offers to dilute the overly-conservative concentration here in good ole Dixie. lol

Uhh Do you want a GMAIL account?

I have 50 to give away and it would assist you in organizing your emails pretty easily.. good spam filter and I think its up to 6 gigs of space...

If you already have one.. you should probably route all that mail to that account...
