What does it mean when the stock market opens at -236? What does the number mean? What should the number be.

To answer your questions, basically the DOW is the DOW Jones Industrial Average. It is an index made up of the 30 largest American companies (I.E. GE, Microsoft, General Motors etc.) which also have a large international reach. A large, negative DOW Jones futures number just prior to the market opening could indicate a large sell off of stocks just after the opening or even a crash. In other words it could lead to panic selling. This is what we were witnessing a few months ago when the DOW futures indicated a -700 opening on the night of Martin Luther King Day. It forced the Federal Reserve to step in with an emergency Fed rate cut early that following Tuesday morning just prior to the market opening in order to prevent a possible crash similar to the one we saw in 1987. I singled out the DOW as its the most watched index but obviously other indexes such as the NASDAQ and S&P 500 also show large negative futures numbers. I wouldn't say there really is a "good" number though a positive futures number at the opening of the stock market is usually a good sign.

My family still has some really old Irish, Catholic traditions that have been passed down from generation to generation since at least the 1600-1700's that they still use. And yes, some of them do include booze. lol My mom has charted our family, person to person on both sides of our family to at least 1100 AD in Ireland.

Since I have to work, I ordered some handmade Irish chocolates from Dublin, Ireland to celebrate the occasion. they cost me an arm and a leg with the currency conversion (I.E. U.S. dollar to Euro) but its worth it.
