I am not a clinton supporter. However, I have found it astonishing how rabidly the left has turned against the clintons. only a year or so ago we were holding them up as the 'golden age' of liberal leadership in govt. Now they have been so demonized that people feel justified in bandying about words like "whore" and "racists" and demanding chelsea answer questions about her father's sexual trist with monica lewinsky. Does anyone else find this ironic?

It really undermines my faith in the left to rise above the manipulation and mob mentality we so recently saw under rove and the right wing coo-coos.... seems we are not immuned :-(

BTW, interesting monitoring policy in place on the Randi Rhodes thread below. Misogynistic terms are okay, racist terms are deleted. Homophobic terms are deleted if they refer to men but not if they refer to women.

The explanation given is "it's the topic", as though a topic cannot be debated and explored without debasing the dialogue.

(What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding
As I walk through
This wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity.
I ask myself
Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred, and misery?

And each time I feel like this inside,
There's one thing I wanna know:
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

And as I walked on
Through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong
And who are the trusted?
And where is the harmony?
Sweet harmony.

'Cause each time I feel it slippin' away, just makes me wanna cry.
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding? Ohhhh
What's so funny 'bout peace love & understanding?

So where are the strong?

Well i for one believe that politics should be more than a football game of "my team against your." I don't support the progressive agenda simply because it is NOT the conservative agenda. I support a progressive agenda because it promotes deliberative democracy, equality and hopefully some measure of social justice. Those are values that should not only be reflected in our policy objectives, but in our processes for getting to those objectives. I am disgusted by the base instincts that have come out in this primary.

Apparently the actual date was weeks ago, but thanks for posting this - it's great... a great reminder of what spawned the symbol...

*Activist and artist Gerald Holtom came up with the design on February 21, 1958

see ya next time Tyree.
The most peaceful I've ever been,is when I almost drowned.
I got pretty close to leaving this world.I got held underwater for over 2 minutes in some fairly large surf.
I've never felt that peaceful before that, and haven't since.

Wikipedia's got it... April 4 was the date of the rally, it's 'outing' - Feb 21 was apparently the date of the design.

Holtom was a World War II conscientious objector[1], who on 21 February 1958 designed the Nuclear Disarmament logo for the first Aldermaston March, organised by the Direct Action Committee against Nuclear War, Easter 1958 (4-7 April). The logo was not copyrighted, and was available for use by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, also founded in 1958; it later became known in the wider world as a general-purpose peace symbol.[2][3] The design was a combination of letters of the flag semaphore alphabet for "N" and "D", standing for nuclear disarmament.

what's going to happen with the new torture memo?

Nobody really cares. People who think
Bush/Cheney will be impeached are out-of-touch. By impeaching
Clinton, the GOP effectively removed that option as a viable political
tool for at least a generation. The reasons to impeach
GeorgeFuckingBush are far too many to mention or list; but the
Conservatives have turned fear into a shield of impenetrability ever
since 9/11. Besides, McCain has already been elected; we're only one
terrorist attack away from his coronation. The only thing that will
wake up enough Americans to actually confront the government is a
forced military draft. For chrissakes; millions are without health
care, tens of thousands are losing their homes, diesel is at $4.00
per, corn closed (just today) at $6.00 a bushel - and still the
hapless, pathetic, gutless Democrats sputter on in Congress, and the
Conservatives get a free ride.

Developed originally as a symbol for nuclear disarmament by British textile designer Gerald Holtom, the peace sign quickly spread around the world as the global expression of anti-nuclear weapons. By the mid 1960's of course, the wonderful icon that the peace sign represents became the moniker for a generation wanting Peace & Love to replace war and oppression. Painted on the side of VW buses and people's faces, worn as jewelry or on t-shirts, the peace sign will live forever as a symbol of hope for all those who seek world peace. Today more than ever, the peace sign stands for every sane person's desire to strive for peace, rather than to continue waging meaningless wars.

The Hippy Gourmet salutes Gerald Holtom!

Don't you just love the thought that Al Qaeda and the U.S. always seem to have the same targets in mind? Isn't it odd that they almost appear to be working together? Funny how the right wingers never seem to pick up on that. Even if that is not the case and Al Qaeda is what the Bush regime claims then the only other logical conclusion to made is that Al Qaeda is an instigator and the U.S. is its patsy used by Al Qaeda to eliminate its enemies:

Al Qaeda #2: We'll Attack Iran

"Recently, Senator John McCain has repeatedly indicated that Iran and al-Qaeda are in cahoots. The terror group's number two, Ayman al-Zawahiri, would beg to differ. In a long-promised online Q&A session, Zawahiri says it would be "in the interest" of Al-Qaeda to see Iran "sap[ped]" by a fight with the United States."

Well we found out today we will have to keep a pretty close eye on Dad’s meds in the White House.
During the morning pandemonium getting him ready he sent me to get some meds he takes as required. From the dining room I thought I heard him yelling two blue. Turns out his demi-grapefriut squirted him in the eye eliciting a couple of hearty, Fuck yous. Oh well, shit happens.
Still undecided on the Ferrari red or the Fire engine red slingbacks you can understand how two blue pills got into his med cup. Right after breakfast he swung by to pick up uncle Joe and they rode together in the back of the limo for an hour and a half across three counties. I met them at the function and as the limo pulled up Dad leaped out of the back smiling broadly and announced “today I have selected a running mate.” Uncle Joe opened the door on the other side and sprinted down the street.
More later.

That is McCain's big problem. He simply can not be consistent and come clean about exactly where he stands on the issues that matter to social conservatives (I.E. Evangelicals).  Now, we see that he can not even bring himself to come out openly about his faith.  His reluctance to do this may come to bit him in the ass later on down the road.  The social conservatives were burned bad by the Bush regime and they seem to be seeing the same thing happening to them with McCain.

You can't tell me that a Congress person's stock portfolio doesn't have some bearing on how they vote on any given issue.  Take for example Rep. Blunt's laughable response to say that it does is simply "offensive".  Now tell me, who in their right mind is going to buy a large position in a company's stock only to vote against that company's interests later on?  It makes no sense unless your goal is to see your own stock portfolio decrease in value.

This isn't just about members of Congress either.  Cheney's Halliburton and Rumsfeld's Gilead Sciences all gained due issues that related to those companies.  Funny, Gilead Sciences, one of the makers of Tamiflu was all the rage when the bird flu was all over the news.  Now that Rumsfeld is gone, we don't hear a peep about the bird flu.  Coincidence?  I don't think so.

A post from a Republican type on some site defending Wally World and 'stand on your own two feet' blah blah blah
Can you spot the double standards and illogicality in this. Quite funny really.

I'm a single father who makes a pretty decent upper mid class salary. But, I have to dump about 1500 or more a month on a nanny and that's not counting on what I spend to feed her. I don't get child support from my loser ex wife either. That's in the works, lol. So, Wal Mart is invaluable to me. They are a great business and a great store. Why should I care about the little guy who sells the same crap for much more? Why? Cause he's the little guy? Get into another business or compete or give up. I don't care and neither do any of the other TRUE Americans who realize that capitolism is the backbone of this nation. Big and small corporations are SUPPOSED to make as much profit as possible. Whiners. I'm sick of people whining in this country about things they should be doing FOR THEMSELVES. Go to medical school if you want free medical care. Grow crops if you don't work or starve for all I care. I'll feed your poor kids but not adults OR EVEN whiney senior citizens who failed to save for their retirement like my father and mother both did. They are both diverting their social security checks into a fund for my kids. I don't want to pay for social security even if what I pay NOW actually goes to the current users. They don't deserve my charity simply because of the fact that many of them demand my charity as if it is their right. They let government deplete the social security surplus for things other than social security. Why are we, the mid class parents and youth of America, paying for it? I hope I do the right thing and die before EVER making my kids pay anything to take care of me. How prideless do you have to be to grow old and then demand the aid of government and others because you did not prepare? Pathetic.

Dad put one leg up on a handy chair, fortunately he wore his baggy pants, and holding uncle Joe close answered “ I’d send in a phalanx of hardened troops to soothe any hot spot.” Uncle Joe looked away in distress.

Jesse writes that he soon discovered “there is a CIA operative inside every state government…. In Minnesota, this person was at a deputy commissioner level, fairly high up.” On Alex’s show, Jesse twice made mention of the fact the CIA’s charter explicitly prohibits domestic operations.

more anecdotal but accumulating evidence of the two 'chains of command' that exists in the US mil, media outlets and government in the US.
Its impossible in a democracy to have two bosses when working one job, subordinates cannot trust decisions made by a hydra manager.
Could anybody trust a verbal non documented order from such a manager which might have come down through the other CoC and be denied later when the brown stuff hits the fan and the underlings get the blame for whatever, esp if they get conned into doing illegal actions.

ferrofluid's picture

Jesse recalls a post-inaugural meeting with CIA agents. As Ventura told Alex Jones, he was less than cooperative with the CIA because the agents, 23 in all gathered at the Minnesota capitol, would not reveal their names, not even their code names. As Tim Pugmire wrote on the Minnesota Public Radio website last January, “CIA Spokesman George Little confirmed the event … in a written statement, but he offered few details.” Little said that “on occasion CIA officers meet with senior state government officials, as they did in this case, to discuss issues of mutual interest.”

off the record meetings like this esp when its a show of force by a large anon group of twenty three agents is worrying.
This looks more like soviet style commissars and henchmen going to intimidate elected and public officials.
And how could you trust them to be who they actually are unless they document their IDs with proof,
they could be the local mafia or pranksters pretending to be TLAs.
If an event like this is official and part of new Governor initiation into the job, then proper procedures and confidential atmosphere would be expected by all, so doing the anon bit is pointless, theres nothing stopping TLAs sending along a small team of known DC names to brief on security, people who dont need to hide their identitys.

It is actually the Rune for WAR and Death.. not PEACE...

Look at the last 50 years that the symbol has been used...

They have been no where near peaceful....quite the opposite..

Time to turn the symbol upside down.. So its Arms are raised up to the sky..

Then we will see different results...

But as long as people keep walking through this reality the same way we have been... nothing is going to change.

I'm surprised we even have a word for the concept, let alone a symbol.
Probably isn't listed at all under the 'conservotardopedia'
Or it goes something like "Peace - See also 'dirty hippies', 'Commies' and 'achieved through war'.

...yeah, and we know how fine and dandy things were in the 50 years before the symbol: two world wars and three genocides (Nazi, Armenian, Stalin purges).

As for the peace symbol, it's a combination of the two letters "ND" in semaphore. If you turn it upside down, I'm who knows what two words it will stand for.

...As the nation tries to recall the meaning of Martin Luther King today, Mr. Obama's campaign has become a mirror reflecting where we are on race 40 years after the assassination. Mr. Obama's success has moved forward the story of American race relations; King would have been thrilled with his political triumphs.

But when Barack Obama, arguably the best of this generation of black or white leaders, finds it easy to sit in Rev. Wright's pews and nod along with wacky and bitterly divisive racial rhetoric, it does call his judgment into question. And it reveals a continuing crisis in racial leadership.

What would Jesus do? There is no question he would have left that church.

For years its always surprised and made me chuckle how the niche phd scientists who live in their narrow worlds, rarely cross reference between different fields and find common ground, so we get amazed sicence papers and related PR pieces in the MSM on some discovery that is common knowledge to anybody with a brain and who might have multiple interests in different fields.

Only with the mass communication of the internet have we seen mass correlation of widely separate fields and how stuff is very related.
Connecting the dots so to speak.

Actually in the early Byzantine church they showed Jesus as quite severe looking. He may have felt more of a kinship with Wright.

Does that mean he's Wright-wing?

i think that's the real story her-- wright (and his church?) says matter of factly that jesus was black.

that's what gets hannity and all these nuts so crazy fired up....

The Wright thing might be getting old for the wingnuts to harp on. Now comes the National Review's hit job on Obamas wife. New fodder for hannity and the wingnuts to talk about 24/7.

doing the cooperating thing avoids a nasty immediate scandal, but makes connected persons malleable in other areas.

Obama and King
Jesus would've left Wright's church.
by Juan Williams
WSJ

...As the nation tries to recall the meaning of Martin Luther King today, Mr.

Since this whole Rev. Wright thing revolves around what he said about America I think Christ would have had a hard time understanding it. In fact, I bet if Christ were around today he probably would have went to Rev. Wright's church and then followed with the question: "What is an America?"

Thanks for your comment, Joe O. I see your point and agree that the Wright flap is an more an issue of anti-Americanism as opposed to race. Juan Williams is villified on this blog but I think he has written a very good and pertinent article on this day and makes a stark and compelling contrast between Obama and Dr. King.

I'm not sure why he wrote the last sentence. I think the better question for this article would have been 'What would Martin Luther King have done? There is no question he would have left that church".

Maybe Dr. King would have or maybe not. Dr. King was also an outspoken critic of the Vietnam war so that would have placed Dr. King on an "anti-American" footing as well during his time. In both cases, Rev. Wright and Dr. King spoke out against the same Goverment. That is what they refer to when they say "America". Dr. King, in my opinion, probably would have visited Rev. Wright's church.

Starting sometime in the 80s, I would sometimes see people accidentally draw Mercedes symbols instead of peace signs, leaving out the bottom half of the vertical line. I always wondered if that was some sort of Freudian slip, given the shallow consumerism of the 80s.
