Shocking video shows death of Reuters cameraman
By David Edwards

http://rawstory.com/rawreplay/?p=1289

Journalists in Gaza refused to report on military operations by Israeli Defense Forces today as a protest over the killing of Reuters cameraman.

According to Reuters, Fadel Shana, a Reuters photojournalist, was killed by Israeli troops while filming in Gaza Strip on April 16, 2008. Reuters reports that Shana had been following standard press procedure, wearing a flak jacked marked with press symbols. His vehicle was also clearly marked with press stickers.

Shana’s own video tape reveal the final moments before his death.

Reuters has more details here. An ABC News report on the journalists’ protest in Gaza is here.

This video is from ABCNews.com, broadcast June 16, 2008.

Not much of a golf fan, but I admit, it was riveting! Great playing, Rocco.

Here in San Diego county, everyone spoke of nothing else all weekend. We expect the Open will want to come back as soon as possible. The raves from the fans, players, and media keep comin'. It was the best Open in 48 years?!?
91 holes decided by a single stroke! Wow.

Robert Wexler's new book Fire Breathing Liberal gets good review by The Palm Beach Post.

From the review:

"Is George Bush crazy?" While visiting Syria, Wexler was asked that question by President Bashar al-Assad.

Wexler said he puzzled over the question and how to answer it. He decided it would be best to keep al-Assad guessing.

"I told Assad that he needed to understand that George Bush is capable of taking actions that other presidents might not contemplate."

Now if we can just get those dips to quit yelling, "Get in the Hole!"! Damn.

'Don Siegelman, the former Alabama governor, is asking a federal appeals court to throw out his conviction on dubious corruption charges. His appeal has some surprising backers: a bipartisan group of 54 former state attorneys general has submitted a brief on his behalf. Congress is also investigating charges that Mr. Siegelman was politically targeted.' 6/17

"Powell said he told both candidates recently that he has not decided which one will have his coveted endorsement."

Obama and McSame couldn't be further apart on the issues. Powell needs to peddle his bs someplace else.

Every time the incompetent and inept right-wing Media tells a lie about Michelle Obama, just remember the truth about Cindy "The Lude" McCain.

(Oct. 18, 1999) GOP presidential candidate John McCain's wife Cindy took to the airwaves last week, recounting for Jane Pauley (on "Dateline") and Diane Sawyer (on "Good Morning America") the tale of her onetime addiction to Percocet and Vicodin, and the fact that she stole the drugs from her own nonprofit medical relief organization.

It was a brave and obviously painful thing to do.

It was also vintage McCain media manipulation.

Like many casual golf fans, I love Tiger. But seeing Rocco, in a very prominent pairing on Sunday, wearing a belt with a huge peace sign as the buckle, made me really pull for him. I think that said quite a bit about the kind of man he is. Today he showed what a lot of guys on the tour already knew, he got game!

Gore has become one of the best speakers for the progressive viewpoint in recent memory. If he had sounded like this eight years ago, we'd all be better off.

Great golf match. Hat tip to both though more so to Rocco.

And though he's the best player in the world Tiger behaved like an asshole. Not so much today but yesterdays throwing clubs was way out of line.

I like Tiger but it grows at little tiresome with the announces fawning over him.

Stop the club throwing Tiger. We don't allow it in our group and we're hacks.

And sign some autographs for the kids.

Hitting a clutch 12-foot putt to force an 18-hole playoff? Damn.

Hitting yet another clutch putt to put the match into sudden death? DAMN!

Doing it all on a knee that looked like it could double as a construction pylon on I-5? Dude, this guy isn't human!

Golf. Golf? Golf?

One of the single most reprehensible abuses, among so many to choose from, is the continual panicmongering from the White House everyday since Sept. 11, 2001 but 2008 will bring down a rain of Repug rejection all across the country.

'Tis surprising to see how rapidly a panic will sometimes run through a country. All nations and ages have been subject to them. Britain has trembled like an ague at the report of a French fleet of flat-bottomed boats; and in the fourteenth [fifteenth] century the whole English army, after ravaging the kingdom of France, was driven back like men petrified with fear; and this brave exploit was performed by a few broken forces collected and headed by a woman, Joan of Arc. Would that heaven might inspire some Jersey maid to spirit up her countrymen, and save her fair fellow sufferers from ravage and ravishment! Yet panics, in some cases, have their uses; they produce as much good as hurt. Their duration is always short; the mind soon grows through them, and acquires a firmer habit than before. But their peculiar advantage is, that they are the touchstones of sincerity and hypocrisy, and bring things and men to light, which might otherwise have lain forever undiscovered. In fact, they have the same effect on secret traitors, which an imaginary apparition would have upon a private murderer. They sift out the hidden thoughts of man, and hold them up in public to the world. Many a disguised Tory has lately shown his head, that shall penitentially solemnize with curses the day on which Howe arrived upon the Delaware.

He came back in the back nine to gain the lead. He blew a 20' put on the 18th and then went to pieces on the 7th. He was game and he put on one hell of a show.

interesting article sent to me-
When the Republicans choose their candidate on September 4th, there is a
very real chance that they could throw the election into an unexpected chaos
as they pull a genuine September Surprise.
I think there is every reason to believe John McCain won't be the nominee.
Ok, let me say that again. McCain will not be the Republican candidate in
November.
Here's how it could happen:
At some point in mid August, John McCain will announce that he has decided
that he can not accept his party's nomination for president. The reason will
be health-related, and that may turn out to be the truth. Anyone who's seen
him on stage these days knows he looks like he's about to keel over. And
anyone who's been on a presidential campaign knows the physical demands are
grueling and can be a challenge for a young man.
But excuses or facts hardly matters. He won't be accepting his party's
nomination.
The reasons are simple. He can't win. Now that Obama is the presumptive
Democratic nominee -- the polls all show that McCain's pro-war stance and
Bush endorsement make him a lost cause in November. That combined with soft
stand on litmus test conservative issues make him an unpopular candidate
among the base. I know some Democrats that think the Republicans are
planning to let McCain lose and 'sit this one out' so that they can hang the
democrats with a bad economy and a war that is a morass. But that just isn't
how they play. They play to win every hand -- think about 2000 with a
popular Democratic president and good economy and a solid VP running for
president. Why did they put up Bush? And why did they fight so hard? Because
you don't ever throw a game. And they're not going to throw this one.
McCain won't be the nominee.
By August, they'll have done something to try and pick away at Obama's
popularity. They'll emphasize race, or whatever they can to get him to
appear less than perfect. Then, they'll bring out of the woodwork a surprise
candidate who can shift the story fast. With just two months before the
election -- the new candidate will have little time to be 'vetted' but will
be shiny and new, and will get a lot of media attention as Obama's newness
will have become -- by then -- tarnished or at least no longer the surprise
that it has been as he unseated Hillary.
So, who will be the Republican candidate that faces Obama in the fall?
I've spoken to a number of friends who -- when presented with this set of
facts respond: "but they don't have anybody else." That's simply not the
case.
Joe Trippi, campaign consultant and most notably Howard Dean's campaign
manager, said of McCain dropping out: "While crazy, this may be the best
shot they have."
There are a whole list of Republicans who in many ways are more likely to
energize the Republican base. One thing is certain -- there are candidates
that will play to the core issues in ways that McCain simply can't.
Here's a list of names. Some you know, some you don't. But each of them
knows their name is in play. Among them --
Condoleezza Rice (Secretary of State)
Colin Powell (fmr Sec. Of State)
Marilyn Musgrave (Colorado Congresswoman)
Mitt Romney (fmr Massachusetts Governor)
Mike Huckabee (fmr Governor of Arkansas)
Charlie Crist (Florida Governor)
Tim Pawlenty (Minnesota Governor)
Bobby Jindal (Louisiana Governor)
Mark Sanford: (Governor of South Carolina)
John Thune (Senator from South Dakota)
Dick Lugar (Senator from Indiana)
Chuck Hagel (Senator from Nebraska)
MIchael Bloomberg (NYC Mayor)
Ok, go ahead knock them down. One by one. See if you can really remove ALL
these names from a list of candidates that are more likely to give Obama a
run for his money. They'll come on the scene late, with a press corps that
is looking for a horse race and a new story. Obama's frontrunner status will
be upset, and there will be a set of variables that need to be calculated --
and tested against a weary electorate.
Is this supposition? Sure, but one grounded with enough history and
observation to take it beyond conjecture and into the realm of the possible.

So -- before the Democrats go and game out how to beat McCain, it may be worth thinking about what happens when he says he won't accept the nomination. For the Republicans, a wide open convention would be both good theater and good politics.

I wouldn't say he went to pieces. The 7th doesn't set up well for his draw. And that is exactly what cost him when he drew his drive into the bunker.

Just like 18 sets up better for Tiger.

With all due respect, I'm getting tired of these debates about how much "passion" an athlete is allowed to show. Woods took way too much heat in the first part of his career for showing too little emotion.

Even some of the greatest gentleman golfers to ever play the game have had days where they have picked up a wedge and tossed into yonder pond. Or let fly a stream of invective that would make a sailor blush. It happens, especially when you're talking about one of the biggest tournaments of the year.

McCain continues to lie
while Bush continues to fail
to convince Iraqis to extend the occupation past Dec. 31. The Dems will defy Bush on jobless benefits extension. A pro-Bush evangelical likes Obama. Little Elian has grown up into a Commie Youth. The Taliban swiped some villages during their jail break. Unlike Bush, other politicians deal with reality, and consider inflation a bad thing.
A soldier who got hurt before he even got into battle is getting screwed out of disability checks. Doctors fight back by rating insurers. Bernanke says we need better health care. Bush could lose 26 more levees

The putt to send it into sudden death was a four footer.

And I've got no problem showing emotion and enthusiasm but. Our high school leagues and tournaments around here you are assessed a two shot penalty for club throwing. And I've personally witnessed fellow competitors hit by thrown clubs.

It's out of line. Get ready for your next shot.

This is neither surprising nor new to anyone who objectively follows what's going on.

The IsraeliTerrorist Force, the ITF, has a long history of targeting foreign journalists, a tactic the US emulated during the occupation of Iraq. It's a direct parallel to how the ITF taught the US how to torture and humiliate muslims (e.g. Koran "abuse") at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere.

That is sickening. I'm sure LIEbermann is wanking off to that footage.

It was also suicidal, parking your car in a lane then popping your head and body above a hedge line.
It could be asked why the media reports anything on Israel at all if they dont like the treatment of Gaza, better to boycott them 100%.
Then again the journalists in Gaza and Lebanon tread a fine line between recording the various abuses, stories and general day to day stuff, and then its career building time to get a better job outside the war zones.
Its a dangerous job, accidents and deliberate targeting of journalists both happens.

Great Open. Was nice to see Tiger pushed for a change. Was nicer to see a guy like Rocco doing it too. Golf needs more loosey goosey guys like Rocco. Great way to show kids that the game is more fun when approached with a sense of humour. I heard one astounding stat over the weekend. The fact that Jack Nicklaus finished in the top ten 73 times in Majors.
They said Tiger would have to finish top ten in every major till the year 2019 just to catch him. I think thats one that Jack just might hang on to. Hat tip to my hometown hero David Hearn from Canada here who had a decent tourny but missed cut by 2 strokes. Very enjoyable Open though. Back to Bethpage next year where they have 250 yard plus carries just to get to some fairways. Short hitters like Rocco probably wont be so much in the mix there.

Bump Secretariat? I think not! Let us instead bump that horrible racist Ty Cobb. Secretariat still holds the world record for 1.5 miles, which he set as a 3 year old. After setting records for the Derby. And Preakness. Plus, he was a really nice guy.

Rocco Mediate almost pulled off a huge upset against Tiger Woods. Good for him…

Now that i have given up golf things are much better in Iraq. I urge all Americans to give up golf in order to save the lives of our American Troops and to save the lives of Iraqis.

Does McCain and his wife Cindy have an open marraige agreement?

As I made the rounds in Washington, several people mentioned the story. A theme developed. I was told that reporters know a lot more than they let on, but they are reticent about bringing it up.

Exercise showed that chaos was possible even with 400,000 troops

The U.S. government conducted a series of secret war games in 1999 that anticipated an invasion of Iraq would require 400,000 troops, and even then chaos might ensue.

In its “Desert Crossing” games, 70 military, diplomatic and intelligence officials assumed the high troop levels would be needed to keep order, seal borders and take care of other security needs.

The documents came to light Saturday through a Freedom of Information Act request by the George Washington University’s National Security Archive, an independent research institute and library.

Jesse Owens yes, absolutely, and I would add Jackie Joyner-Kersey.
Ben Hogan and Tiger Woods and no Jack Niklaus, or Arnie Palmer?.......At the end of his career Tiger WILL be the best......choose one and be happy!
Michael Jordan yes! There is was magic in his fadeaway jumper, but if Jerry West had the 3-point shot in his day.....whew! nuttin-but-net!

Obama vs McCain: Digging-In or "Standing Ready"

OBAMA
"When you look at what's going on in Iowa, this is a catastrophe and we want to minimize damage in communities like Quincy [Ill.] that haven't been hit hard yet like places like Cedar Rapids [Iowa] ...What we really need is more volunteers," said Sen. Obama as he filled sandbags in his home state but keyed-in on Iowa, where floods broke through levees and flooded Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City.

MCC*NT:

On the same day, John McCain attended a private fundraiser in Riverside, California, and blasted a press release of "sympathy" to Midwestern victims of the floods that have devastated crops, homes, churches, businesses, and lives-- most especially in the flood epicenter of Iowa, a 'must-win' battleground state this fall for both McCain and Obama.

Sen. McCain .. promised to "stand ready to help those in the Midwest to recover and rebuild."

Stand ready?

Iowa's Flood Waters May Take 5 To 10 Days To Totally Recede
June 16, 2008 3:01 p.m. EST
Vittorio Hernandez - AHN News Writer

Cedar Rapids, IA (AHN) - Iowa's worst nightmare is expected to end soon as floodwaters started to recede Monday. The flood, Iowa's worst in 30 years, had rendered 36,000 residents homeless and destroyed billions of homes, farms and properties expected to exceed $2 billion in value.

Experts said this year's flood would go beyond the $2.1 billion losses registered in 1993, of which $1 billion was for destroyed farmlands and lost harvest. In Cedar Rapids alone, damage was estimated at $750 million, 50 percent of this were waterlogged houses and personal effects.

To bring back Iowa to its feet, Lee Clancey, president of Cedar Rapid's Chamber of Commerce, said at least $2 billion to $3 billion would be needed.

On the anniversary of the federal minimum wage, more attention should be paid to the working poor, who were hit especially hard by recent economic policies.

Ya think?

Dr. (terrorist fist jab) Matt @ 17:

Read on....

They should have a 'First Lady' Debate. Michelle vs Cindy, steel cage, no holds barred, death match.

A hair pulling, eye-gouging, nail scratching, shin kicking intellectual discussion of the issues.

In a Town Hall setting of course.

Forget the details of their military service. It all boils down to this ..

McSame was a POW and Kerry opposed and criticised the war when he returned.

Those two things are what Repugs cling to with their lives and it affects many Americans in a similar way.

Hi USA, this evening i got a look at a raw satellite feed of CNN (American version) and MSNBC. Are all the talking head shows that bad? The Joe Scarborough piece "Morning joe"
is so boring and inane. Then I got to look at the FOX network FNS, man that is just so bad I can't describe it. They paint such a strange look at what is going on.

Hopefully most of the people on Crooks and Liars get their news from the Internet, cause if you don't you have no idea what is going on in the rest of the world.

FOX says that McLame has a really good chance of winning over Obama, hopefully they are as full of crap as everyone here says they are.

Here is a good look at what some other countries are saying and thinking about bush.

Not only that, they PAY for the dreck!

I'm in a motel room in another state for work for a few days that has about 70 channels, including the ones you mentioned. Haven't watched ANY of them, just CSPAN and Comedy Central. Between the two of these, more news than on all the "news" channels combined.

I remember what I considered the dorkiest name for a Mickey Spillane hero, Tiger Mann.

I disagree. the facts never mattered. the media portrayals did.

Another Bad Deal for Baghdad

The "strategic alliance" with Iraq that President Bush is proposing eerily resembles a failed treaty between Britain and Iraq that prompted a nationalist eruption in Baghdad.

Honda rolls out new zero-emission car; Welcome to the 21st Century - http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5is-WLvgmNMniTcwwWeDWidZkWRKwD91B8G8O0
The FCX Clarity, which runs on hydrogen and electricity, emits only water and none of the noxious fumes believed to induce global warming. It is also two times more energy efficient than a gas-electric hybrid and three times that of a standard gasoline-powered car, the company says.

Environment-U.S.: "Water Is Alive, It Hears Our Words" - By Alice Gordon - http://www.ipsnews.net/news.asp?idnews=42790
Native Americans and others completed a 10-day "Walk for the Water" this week along the Chattahoochee River, which some estimates say will dry up completely by 2025 due to pressure from the rapidly growing city of Atlanta.
"Local governments in metro Atlanta welcome and approve new developments on a daily basis, with little certainty that water will be available for newcomers in the decades to come. There is talk about water conservation, but no funded incentives and mandates from state leaders. In fact, the only new conservation measure passed in the 2008 legislative session (GOP dominated) was a three-day sales-tax holiday on water-efficient appliances." (Yipee! We're saved!)
"States are fighting over rights. Water has become like everything else: a commodity rather than being given to us freely by the creator and used as it was meant to be. It is being used for commercial purposes... It becomes a resource, and like all resources is to be used up rather than taken care of."

Amazingly, the utility won't even stand behind the exorbitant tripled cost for the plant. In its filing with state regulators, Progress Energy warned that its new $17 billion estimate for its planned nuclear facility is "nonbinding" and "subject to change over time."
This would seem to be the exact opposite of the old claim for the nuclear industry, "Too cheap to meter." Now it's so expensive the company raises your rates before the power even gets to the meter!

There can't be both history has shown us this (from Greece, to Rome): Empire or Democracy: Are We Ready for the Fall? - http://www.huffingtonpost.com/john-w-whitehead/empire-or-democracy-are-w...
Increasingly, parallels are being drawn between the Roman Empire and the current American Empire. Yet while some may look to Rome as an inspiration, others believe it casts a dark shadow over us and our supposedly imperial aspirations.
There is a story, often told, that upon exiting the Constitutional Convention Benjamin Franklin was approached by a group of citizens asking what sort of government the delegates had created.
His answer was: "A republic, if you can keep it." The brevity of that response should not cause us to under-value its essential meaning: democratic republics are not merely founded upon the consent of the people, they are also absolutely dependent upon the active and informed involvement of the people for their continued good health.

Empire or Republic? by Robert Scheer - http://www.truthdig.com/report/item/20080614_empire_or_republic/
War doesn’t pay, nor does imperial ambition. This proposition should be evident to anyone who has paid attention to the fivefold increase in the price of oil since George W. Bush took office. The principle of nonintervention is neither liberal nor conservative in orientation, and at the inception of the Republic it was accepted as a commonsense.

The dominant assumption of our nation’s founders was to avoid “foreign entanglements,” to use Thomas Jefferson’s words of warning. Indeed, the policy of nonintervention was considered by the founders as a basic demarcation between the politics of the Old and New Worlds. Explaining in his farewell address why he, as our first President, followed “our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances, with any portion of the foreign world,”
George Washington cautioned his countrymen to “moderate the fury of party spirit, to warn against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism.” What has happened to the American people that these modest yet profound sentiments seem so foreign to the tongues of our politicians and the ears of their constituents? Who among our top leaders, Democrat or Republican, dares warn against the “impostures of pretended patriotism”?

Wiretaps "R" Us: Is the FBI Tracking Your Cellphone? - http://www.dissidentvoice.org/2008/06/wiretaps-r-us-is-the-fbi-tracking-...
In other words, despite prohibitions on the FBI's ability to spy on Americans, the Bureau is storing illegally-obtained data in a centralized data-mining "warehouse" for indefinite retrieval purposes, say, during a "state of national emergency" when the "usual suspects" can be "disappeared"
In other words, in addition to “known and suspected terrorists,” presumably al-Qaeda and their minions, additional “potential threats” to the capitalist order are named: domestic “radical groups” and “disgruntled employees.”
One needn’t be a “conspiracy buff” to recognize — cooly and rationally — that the national security surveillance state under construction since before 9/11, can trace its lineage back to domestic counterinsurgency operations such as the FBI’s COINTELPRO or “civil disturbance” contingency plans such as NORTHCOM’s contemporaneous “Garden Plot” and “Cable Splicer” projects.

MUST READ: David Sirota: Debating Grover (Pedophile) Norquist, America's Leading Fake Populist - http://www.ourfuture.org/blog-entry/debating-grover-norquist-americas-le...
This is a person who in the face of $4.50 gasoline and $40 billion in ExxonMobil profits tells us that we should give away more policy goodies to the oil companies. This is a person who in the face of polls showing the public thinks the tax system is fundamentally unfair in the wake of the Bush tax cuts, says we should nonetheless push forward with even more regressive tax cuts.
This is a person who in the face of massive budget deficits and social service cuts, says we should slash corporate tax rates, even though our effective corporate tax rate is among the lowest in the industrialized world. This is, in short, a person who is so insulated inside the Beltway and so coddled by the Big Money interests that have financed his career that he quite literally has no idea that there's an uprising going on throughout the country - and no official photos of him with statues of Ronald Reagan can hide that reality.
