That's right, the Byzantine Empire survived until 1453 and preserved an unbroken link to classical tradition based on a much milder form of Christianity than the Catholicism of the West.

What I was getting at as well was that the Western Empire was in decline from the time of Emperor Commodus, but unlike the Eastern Empire there was no Manzikert to mark its ultimate decline, and the West had no clear moment that it ceased to exist. I think it's going to be the same with the US, but my model on how this nation will probably end up collapsing is more of a hybrid of the fall of the Qing Dynasty with the USSR and a little bit of the Western Empire's collapse.

Their alleged crimes don't justify our actions any more than ours justify theirs.

And it's hardly alleged that the Soviet Union deliberately invaded two nations in its empire to keep them from deserting. Considering how fresh the memory of Barbarossa was and the rhetoric from the US, the actions were justified from the Soviet POV. You can also find video of Tianmen Square as well.

Understand that we the people of this great country have the power to dump this worthless government and start over. We didn't get rid of one king george, only to have been recaptured by another and even more dangerous boy who would be king. This maddness has got to stop and the rightful question asked of all of us, is when are we the people going to retake control of our lives as well as our destiny?

FWIW, GHWBush was NOT CIA director when Kennedy was assassinated. He did not become CIA Director until the mid-70s.

Speaking of Iran, July 2 was the anniversary of the US warship Vincennes shooting down the Iranian civilian airliner. There was an excellent article in Counterpunch on this today: http://counterpunch.org/sasan07112008.html It turns out (I know this will shock everyone) that everything the US claimed about the shooting when it happened was false including that the Vincennes was in international waters. It was in fact in Iran's territorial waters.

Republicans are not criminals, only poor people are!
