Check out this clever fundraising animation (and yes, it's in the classic style of xkcd). At presstime Kansas State Rep. hopeful Sean Tevis was within his goal of 3000 donations of $8.34 by tonight.

"Bush Memorial Sewage Treatment Plant" makes ballot !!

Voters to decide: Bush memorial sewage plant?

(07-17) 14:57 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- San Francisco voters will be asked to decide whether to name a city sewage plant in honor of President Bush, after a satiric measure qualified for the November ballot today.

Backers of the measure, who for several months circulated a petition to place the measure on the ballot, turned in more than 12,000 signatures on July 7, said organizer Brian McConnell. The Department of Elections today informed those supporters, the self-proclaimed Presidential Memorial Commission, that they had enough valid signatures - a minimum of 7,168 registered San Francisco voters - to qualify for the November ballot, he said.

McConnell, who came up with the idea over beers with friends, often donned an Uncle Sam outfit to drum up support for the petition. Other signature gatherers - all volunteers - often carried around an American flag and blasted patriotic music from a boom box to attract attention. He said today that the campaign to pass the measure will be an equally grassroots effort.

The measure, if passed by a majority of voters, would rename the Oceanside Water Pollution Control Plant the George W. Bush Sewage Plant. McConnell said the intent is to remember the Bush administration and what the group sees as the president's mistakes, including the war in Iraq.

open gov't? did someone say "open gov't"?

we won't have open gov't until we pass a law saying all public officials, lobbyists, international bankers and old-world royalists are required to submit to 24/7 surveillance, available free through the internet for every man, woman and child in america.

wouldn't be a bad idea, actually.

your sludge is bushes fudge!

I thought it very interesting that the earlier threads had over 160 comments for the Viagra vs. birth control and over 120 comments on Larry Craig on the gas nozzle. The others only had very few, including Al Gore's on getting to a renewable energy system in 10 years. Is sex so prominent in our lives?

Here Pelosi says Bush a 'total failure'.

Au contraire Madam Bag Lady, Bush has been a huge success. He and his cronies have killed many tens of thousands and raided the Treasury for vast sums. He has broken every law in sight, institutionalized the demise of the Constitution and made you his accomplice in the process.

You are every bit as much a criminal as he is.

True, his polling numbers are at record lows, but yours are even worse.

And as his arch accomplice Cheney says: SO!?

PZ Meyers pretty much endorsed Tevis.

This is
pretty much how the Bush Administration behaves.

This is pretty much how its sycophantic media behaves.

I'm trying to ignore politics and enjoy the Tour de France, keep an eye on the phenomenal performance of Christian Vandevelde, of Chicago, who is racing for the brand new U.S. sponsored Team Columbia. He is riding in the top 10 with a real chance of making the podium in Paris.

Stage to watch: Stage 17 on July 23rd.

Now, see, if I were to ever actually run for office instead of just speculating? That's how I'd want to do it, yo.

I just read that. Holy fabrication, Batman! Thank goodness that Chertoff (Homeland Insecurity Waffen SS commander) is on it. Never fear, we've got them on the run. The insurgency is in it's death throws.

Sniff, sniff, I smell "false flag" event ahead.

Does this mean we have to kill them here because we didn't kill them there? And if it's true maybe they'll be holding classes at our local community college under the title, "Freedom Fighting (err...I mean Terrorism) 102: The Manufacture of IED's."

anyways, in non-home-run-derby related news, looks like July 25 is the date set for impeachment hearings, with Conyers' awesome title of "the imperial presidency of George W. Bush and possible legal responses." this is very exciting. what do you guys think will come of this?

That guy's website is full of meaningless drivel. I fail to see anything liberal or progressive about him based on what's there. Is he seriously being recommended ??? His opposition must really really really suck.

i agree. his entire campaign is devoted to getting hits on reddit and then blogs like this who claim that xkcd has a "classic style". apparently, this dem is too hip for me.

George Bush has been the most successful president ever. He's been the best president of all time. To about 5% of the population of the country that is. His "base" is very, very pleased with the job that the Bush team has done for them. Those 5% have seen their incomes skyrocket. They've been teased befor George took over. Bill Clinton promised them the stars but only gave them the moon.
Katrina a disaster? Nope, Bushes pals have made a ton of money there.
Iraq a shambles? Not on your life. Money is being made hand over fist in that little bbq.
Yes, to the only people that really matter to Bush and his cronies, there's been nothing wrong whatsoever with the last 8 years.
I'm sure that they'd just love to carry it on into the distant future.

I just gave him my $8.34 for the entertainment value alone of that ad.
Glad to help.
Good Luck Mr. Tevis!

Here we go again, more fearmongering.

Gore Calls for Carbon-Free Electric Power - http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/18/washington/18gorecnd.html?_r=3&oref=sl...
Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, the presumptive Democratic candidate for president, immediately praised Mr. Gore’s speech. “For decades, Al Gore has challenged the skeptics in Washington on climate change and awakened the conscience of a nation to the urgency of this threat,” Mr. Obama said.
A shift away from fossil fuels would make the United States a leader instead of a sometime rebel on energy and conservation issues worldwide, Mr. Gore said. Nor, he said, would the hard work of people who toil on oil rigs and deep in the earth be for naught. “We should guarantee good jobs in the fresh air and sunshine for any coal miner displaced by impacts on the coal industry,” he said by way of example. “Every single one of them.”
“Of course, there are those who will tell us that this can’t be done,” he conceded. “But even those who reap the profits of the carbon age have to recognize the inevitability of its demise. As one OPEC oil minister observed, ‘The Stone Age didn’t end because of a shortage of stones.’ ”

Energy crisis threatens U.S. survival, Gore says - http://www.nowpublic.com/environment/energy-crisis-threatens-u-s-surviva...
In a speech at Washington's Constitution Hall, Gore touched on an array of the nation's current woes, saying the economic, environmental and national security crises are all related. "I don't remember a time in our country when so many things seemed to be going so wrong simultaneously," Gore said. Gore called on the country to produce all of its electricity from renewable and carbon-free sources in 10 years, a goal he compared to President Kennedy's challenge for the country to put a man on the moon in the 1960s.
Gore chastised those who have proposed opening new areas for oil drilling as a solution to U.S. energy problems. "It is only a truly dysfunctional system that would buy into the perverse logic that the short-term answer to high gasoline prices is drilling for more oil 10 years from now," Gore said. Time to dispense with the BS: McCain-As-War-Hero Myth - http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article20299.htm
So why is the McCain-as-war-hero myth so hard to unravel? By most accounts, John McCain demonstrated courage as a P.O.W., most notably by refusing his captors’ offer of early release. But that doesn’t make him a hero. Hell, McCain isn’t even a victim. When McCain was shot down during his 23rd bombing sortie, he was happily shooting up a civilian neighborhood in the middle of a major city.
McCain graduated from the Naval Academy near the bottom of his class, his father the admiral got him into pilot training school and was involved in 4 noncombat crashes.
Not even General Wesley Clark, shot four times in Vietnam, is allowed to question the McCain-as-war-hero narrative. “Well, I don’t think riding in a fighter plane and getting shot down is a qualification to be president,” he argued.

James G. Abourezk: Big Oil's Raid On the Great Plains: Bush Crony's $10 billion Oil Refinery Seeks U.S. Government Guarantees - http://counterpunch.org/abourezk07172008.html
One must ask why is a Texas corporation moving as rapidly as it has to obtain approvals for a 400,000 barrel-a-day oil refinery to be located where there is no oil? There is in fact a thimbleful of oil in extreme northwestern South Dakota, but not enough to keep a refinery busy. There is no oil whatsoever in Union County, South Dakota, which is where Hyperion is attempting to move in to establish what it calls, “a green refinery.” Putting aside for the moment the fact that there is no such thing as a “green refinery,” why Hyperion wants to establish any kind of refinery in the lush farmlands of Southeastern South Dakota is a mystery. A mystery, that is, until one looks a little closer at the Texas corporation.
What South Dakotans are facing is the fact that there is no oil dirtier than that which comes from tar sands. It is of such a low grade of crude that it has to be heavily refined. And how long the nation of Canada will stand for the pollution and energy wastage resulting from producing oil from tar sands is a serious question. This kind of extraction process produces three times more greenhouse gas emissions than does a barrel of conventional oil. The only “green” thing remaining is that which will float southward to Texas into Albert Huddleston’s bank account, leaving South Dakota, a state which now has very clean air, to live with the pollution from his refinery.

"But here's the thing: Even if my hopes on domestic policy are dashed and Obama reveals himself as an unreconstructed, dyed-in-the-wool, big-government liberal, I'm still voting for him.
These past eight years, we have spent over a trillion dollars on foreign soil - and lost countless lives - and done what I consider irreparable damage to our Constitution.
If economic damage from well-intentioned but misbegotten Obama economic schemes is the ransom we must pay him to clean up this foreign policy mess, then so be it. It's not nearly as costly as enduring four more years of what we suffered the last eight years."

No one knows the extent of US oil and natural gas reserves in the offshore and Arctic areas that are off-limits to drilling. The last time they were surveyed was in the 1980s and the technology then used is no longer considered accurate, say industry experts.

I'm noticing a connection between the surging fundamentalism in parts of our nation and what Bush has done to our country. Fundamentalism is an ideology and religion of the powerless poor. Bush has not only made much of the already powerless much more so, but poverty has increased under his administration. He's creating Fundamentalism, to our detriment. We need to alleviate the problem of fundamentalism in heavily fundamentalist areas like the South by increasing standards of living, an intra-US Marshall Plan, and then Fundamentalism will have less of an audience.

That's what he calls his c**t wife?

Speaking of flame wars with trolls, Jake Tapper at ABC has ignited one by quoting Robert Novak's column on the resurrection of Phil Gramm as a McCain adviser and surrogate.
"But you liberals always say Novak is a liar," they whine in flame.

In the spirit of those who use Jonathan Swift to defend the New Yorker, here is my modest proposal.

Our nation of whiners is threatened by Islamofacism. Robert Novak has put the McCain campaign at risk by using false anonymous sources. Life, even that beginning at conception, is endangered. Therefore, due to circumstances unforeseen by the Framers, the President is authorized, by a theory of law I may never have discussed but it was classified, to have Novak seized. His rendition will be ordered so he may be taken in a private jet piloted by Cindy McCain to Nicaragua where he can be waterboarded by Rush Limbaugh. We cannot leave this to amateurs like the Army. They might accept false sources from torture...er enhanced interrogation. Like the Steeler defensive...er Packer offensive line.

Man, you go to all the trouble to teach yourself how to draw, and this is what get's published!

When Naomi Klein says something , you can take it to the bank , starting with her revealing investigation of the piracy of Iraq , " the largest yard sale in history " and the selling off of Iraqi State owned industries to American owned corps. , that was started with war profiteer Bremmer .
Now the Globalist Vultures , NEOCONS and groups like the Council on Foreign Relations see global warming , famine , water shortage not as a problem that we need to work together to solve , but an opportunity to DICTATE any countries sovereignty , including our own and demand in order to solve any problem , to receive aid etc etc. or to succeed in the global market , and in order for the economic plans to succeed , Sovereignty must be reduced and is a thing of the " past " .
These people are god damn dangerous and people better wake up , " DISASTER POLICY " is real and not just to ' push polices " , but to cede sovereignty and gain economic control over every country and to black mail anybody needing AID .
How FKN EVIL do you have to be to see opportunity in wealth , opportunity in pushing a policy and expanding military dominance , during times of Crises .

Conspiracy theory ? NO , HELL NO CONSPIRACY REALITY ! In their own words .

Richard Haass (CFR)- "Globalisation thus implies that sovereignty is not only becoming weaker in reality, but that it needs to become weaker. States would be wise to weaken sovereignty in order to protect themselves, because they cannot insulate themselves from what goes on elsewhere. Sovereignty is no longer a sanctuary."
