Gov. Palin and Iraq
Presumably, John McCain would only select a candidate for vice president who shared his supposedly clear-eyed vision about Iraq, who had also called for -- or at least thought it was a good idea -- to push more troops into Iraq in 2007.

Well, maybe Sarah Palin thought the surge was great, or maybe she didn't. It's hard to tell what, if anything, Palin thinks or thought about the surge of troops in Iraq, or the decision to invade Iraq in the first place, for that matter. A clip search doesn't show any substantive comments from Palin about Iraq during her short term as governor of Alaska, in 2007 or 2008, or at any point prior to that. That includes instances when she was specifically asked about the war.

In an interview with Alaska Business Monthly shortly after she took office in 2007, Palin was asked about the upcoming surge. She said she hadn't thought about it. "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq," she said. "I heard on the news about the new deployments, and while I support our president, Condoleezza Rice and the administration, I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe."

Seven months into the surge, she still either had not formed any opinion on the surge or the war or just wasn't sharing. "I'm not here to judge the idea of withdrawing, or the timeline," she said in a teleconference interview with reporters during a July 2007 visit with Alaska National Guard troops stationed in Kuwait. "I'm not going to judge even the surge. I'm here to find out what Alaskans need of me as their governor."

Charles Krauthammer is railing against the pick in today's WaPo, too. Not that Krauthammer's anything but a total fool, but that says a lot. There are a truck-load of Repugs who would've been better choices--at least they would've been able to sit across from Putin without him busting up laughing at them.

Now the question is: How stupid (and self-destructive) are 'Murkins in general? Will we allow this to happen?

since this an open thread...
i'd like to bring attention to what i'll describe as "chinese government style of censorship" i'm experience with youtube videos containing political content...

one example of several similar such experiences: i tried to view the youtube link of the minnesota raid and got a "video no longer available" message... after having consistently experienced this message numerous times over the last few months with "practically" (because i'm working on memory, not recorded data) every link you guys have posted, and having initially assumed a legitimate techical reason would explain my experience; i decided to post a question on if others could still view the video i had been informed was "no longer available".

apprimately 7 minutes later, i noticed a fresh comment in th comment section where someone had clearly just viewed it. 30 minutes later and another comment has been added while i still cannot view it.

i can view the media needle video without any problem... but not the gop-sanctioned raid.

the only explanation i can think of is that it's quite easy to identify me as a viewer from canada and am being barred from viewing political content which could potentially tarnish america.

now, my thoughts turn to a solution such as an ip spoofer to get around what is beginning to appear as overt censorship by youtube.

are you guys soon to be unavailable to non-residents as well...?

It’s not just the “experience” issue. Palin is a woman who admits she has never CONSIDERED America’s place in the world. Should McCain/Palin win she would be a heartbeat away from being the President and while definitely not “stupid” she is staggeringly “ignorant” of the threats this nation faces and how to meet them.
Additionally, her positions on Women’s rights issues are so far out of the American mainstream that the mainstream is not even in sight. She is anti-choice EVEN if the mother’s life is in danger, even in the case of rape, even in the case of incest. She is against birth control, even condom use by married couples. She is a far right Evangelical Christian creationist from a tiny crazy-right religious community in a valley in Alaska.
This woman is so far out of the mainstream on every issue, is so “ignorant” on SO MANY issues that she doesn’t bear any serious consideration.
AND YET - She is not the issue – her judgment is not the issue – her sex is not the issue. The ISSUE is John McCain’s outrageous LACK OF JUDGMENT in even thinking for a second that this woman should be a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Mrs. Palin is a fine woman, a GREAT mother and an exemplary Alaskan – none of which matters – none of which is an issue. John McCain – by choosing her over so many others so vastly more qualified, informed, interested and available is AN INSULT to the American people and shows that in his case “MAVERICK” means as Obama said about him - “John, you just don’t get it.”

Why Noah Millman thinks it is no big deal that Sarah Palin is grossly unqualified to be President:

"I realize, of course, that she’s totally unqualified to be President at this point in time. If McCain were to die in February 2009, I hope Palin would have the good sense to appoint someone who is more ready to be President to be her Vice President, on the understanding that she would then resign and be appointed Vice President by her successor. (Lest anyone say that this is an absurd, unconstitutional or undemocratic scenario, recognize that this is pretty much what would happen in a Parliamentary system where, if the head of government dies, a successor is chosen by the party.) Palin is absolutely not ready to be President now, but that is a problem that is very easily dealt with if she is and the governing party want to do so."

That sure makes me have faith in the Democratic process!!!!!

NATO’s navy delivers weapons to Georgia under guise of humanitarian aid

Pravda
August 27, 2008

NATO has been increasing its naval presence in the Black Sea during the recent several days.

“The US Navy destroyer USS McFaul, which is currently docked in the Georgian port of Batumi, carries about 50 Tomahawk cruise missiles on board. They are outfitted with nuclear warheads and are meant to hit ground targets. The remaining NATO ships are currently concentrated in the northern part of the Black Sea,” a source in the military intelligence of the Russian Federation said.

Russia ‘could destroy NATO ships in Black Sea within 20 minutes’
RIA Novosti
August 29, 2008

MOSCOW, August 29 () - Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is capable of destroying NATO’s naval strike group currently deployed in the sea within 20 minutes, a former fleet commander said on Friday. (Russian Navy modernized - Image gallery)

Russia’s General Staff said on Tuesday there were 10 NATO ships in the Black Sea - three U.S. warships, the Polish frigate General Pulaski, the German frigate FGS Lubeck, and the Spanish guided missile frigate Admiral Juan de Borbon, as well as four Turkish vessels. Eight more warships are expected to join the group.

As an unswerving member of the left wing of the Democratic Party, Sen. Barbara Boxer of California wasn't going to be much impressed with whomever McCain selected as a running mate. Still, her reaction to the pick of Palin is noteworthy for its sharpness, especially given Boxer's commitment to feminist causes. Here's Boxer's statement:

"The vice president is a heartbeat away from becoming president, so to choose someone with not one hour's worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice.

"If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken.

"The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart.

"Sen. McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a woman on his ticket, such as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe -- they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice.

President Palin...

Really? What's she going to do with her 5 kids (4.x kids if the youngest is her grandchild)?

I know people with very conservative family values and I can tell you that they believe that children should be raised by the mom while the husband earns a living. Since the future first husband works at British Petroleum, I'm sure he's earning enough to support his beauty queen wife. The beauty queen wife was "mayor" of a town with less than 20,000 people. GIVE ME A BREAK. Everybody gets a turn at Mayor in a town of that size. (But I digress...) How is the First Husband going to square the raising of a Down's infant (even if it's his grandchild) with his day job? He's going to quit his job at BP so that he can be a stay in the White House dad? Really?? You think the Journalism major married a guy that wants his wife to earn all the money and NOT raise their children??? CONSERVATIVE VALUES WILL NOT ALLOW A WOMAN TO GIVE UP WHAT THEY CONSIDER HER MOST IMPORTANT G-D GIVEN RESPONSIBILITY. So, explain to me how this is going to work.

I think it was one of the posters at Hullabaloo who opined that this could be Eagleton-scale nasty for the GOP (yay!).

And by the way ...

I've been a supervisor in law enforcement since 1991 - by McCain's criteria I'm overqualified to be Vice President.

did anyone else notice that during turtle mcbush and the pta president's appearance in pennsylvania saturday, the pta president's "speech" was word for word the same damn script she spewed in ohio? only the mention of hillary clinton didn't go over too well.

and then there's this youtube gem that highlights rovian hypocrisy at its best. apparently tim kaine would have been a horrible choice for obama, but miss "what does a VP do all day" is? holy robot christ!!!

"Executive Experience"

The current Rovian talking point is that Palin has more "executive experience" than both Obama and Biden. Doesn't that also apply to McCain? So does that mean she should be the top of the ticket and McCain VP?

Palin / McCain '08!!!!!! You go girl!!!

The Sunday Patriot-News on page A5 runs this story, "Ethics probe might tarnish Palin's reformer image." Evidently, Palin is accused of pressuring and firing the state police chief who refused to dismiss her sister's former husband while her younger sister was involved in "a bitter divorce and child custody dispute with Wooten." "The state probe is also focusing on a half-dozen top state officials accused of trying to drive trooper Mike Wooten from the force. A bipartisian state legislature hired a retired prosecutor to investigate. His report is due in October. In Alaska, critics dub the investigation Troopergate.

its going to be interesting to see how the repigs handle the protesters, will they do what our party of change do ? place them behind concrete barriers five miles from the convention center with not even porta pottys to take a dump in or will they herd them into a freshly dug pit incase they have to hose them down with m14s when they use thier freedom of speach , we live in strange times folks , biden richardson open thier rallys with promisses of more war in afganistan and are cheered for it! when was the time to show all these aholes that its time to get our asses back to the usa and return us to democracy? as long as we have nothing but warmongers to vote for we can never get rid of the patriot act fisa the loss of habius corpus ect ect, its not to late if you want obama fine! but next time he and his buds mention going on to the real war on terriorism scream out no more war , maby he,ll get the message as long as hes cheered for sounding the war cry hes going to believe that your for it, in any event hes not going to be able to go after the bush gang for thier war crimes as long as hes commited to starting his own if he wins the whitehouse, afganistans just a graveyard for lost causes!

I am terrified today.

I talked to a friend in the military, who has been very busy lately. He works in military intel, and has been pulling 16 hour days because of the Russian advances into Georgia. Let's just say this - if a commander took a shit in a town outside of Georgia, he knew about it.

Recently, as in between their "stand down" last week and the VP pick of McCain, there was a big debriefing for their unit. It was about what would happen WHEN John McCain got the presidential nod. Not if. WHEN. He said it was very odd, and gave him a very bad feeling. Then they dropped the bombshell on him. There are invasion plans for Russia. Not "if" plans, "when" plans. As if this is going to pass in May 2009 without question.

I really don't feel very positive about the outcome of this election or what McCain's already planning to do...

I just don't get how Palin is being spun as a Maverick pick. It seems to me that she only gained the term "maverick" and "reformer" after she took out the former governor whom she had a personal grudge against after he passed over her for an open Senate seat. As far as I can tell Ted Stevens loves her, he loves this pick - and all the pundits were spinning to say that she has taken on Ted Stevens, I have yet to see one concrete example of that.

With this showing McCain's "Maverick" appeal, the Republican base LOVES her. Tell me what is so Mavericky about appealing to your base? Remarkable how the 4th estate has spun this pick already.

After McBush's choice of VP and the bs he has been spewing in the past couple of days it is time to label the GOP ticket just what they are. Christofascist theocrats. I don't really think McBush is that far to the right or that pious but he surely has gotten into bed with a full on whackadoo with Palin.

Palin is made of Epic Fail. The rumors about her youngest not being hers? Maybe they're true, maybe they're not, but it actually looks better for her if they are true - if the baby really isn't hers.

If we're to believe the official story, then it means she recklessly endangered the life of her unborn child by flying from Texas to Alaska after her water broke, rather than heading to a Dallas hospital like any sane person would have done. Even after arriving in Alaska, she didn't go directly to Alaska Regional Hospital in Anchorage - 6 miles away. She instead opted to ride in a car for another hour. If this wasn't reckless endangerment then it was attempted homicide - from the anti-choice perspective, that is.

Open threads are so appreciated...allowing one to speak on any topic. I gotta wrap all my pennies to add to my donation to this site.

I was thinking about the GOP's position on right to life. If they believe life begins at conception(per McSame's thinking), then a full term baby is already 9 months old at birth and the birthday would be calculated from that rather the actual day the baby breathes its first breath. Hmmmmmmm....tell me your thoughts on this.
