R.I.P. Paul Newman, Who Scored the Debate Before His ‘Exodus’
http://satiricalpolitical.com/?p=3543
Did you catch John Nail's 8 year old son's thoughts on the debate last night?
Note An eight-year-old child of political-junkie parents is much closer to the mindset of an undecided voter than you, dear reader, or I.

Simply put...one of the last of the real men.
Is there a reason it keeps yelling at me "No New Comments!"
Here is an interesting link to pork barrel spending, how much in each year, and to what party member's constituency the money is going to. Some of it is beyond shocking.

Orangutan. @ 5:
NO SHIT terrifying! YIKES!
I loved watching Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward fall in love in "The Long Hot Summer".
In 1984 I wrote Paul Newman a letter and begged him to run for POTUS. I received a letter from his publicist sending his thanks for the letter and telling me how honored he was that I would ask him to run. He gracefully declined.
He's still the hottest.
Looks like all hell's breaking loose in Alaska. Major anti-Palin demonstration today (Saturday). http://www.adn.com/news/alaska/story/539236.html
By the way, I canvassed for Obama for over 4 hours today in 86 degree Florida sun, and signed up 7 new voters! How about you?
I've been watching things from this side of the border with great interest. Everyone is talking about the great bailout and how it will help everyone. There was an article published online today stating that the Chinese Goverment Central Bank has told banks in China they are NOT allowed to buy any debt instruments from certain goverments(can we say US t bills)
If the american treasury has to crank up the printing presses will inflation not result?
Anyway you guys slice the problem, the solution is going to be painful
I hope no one is getting this idea again...
Document uncovers details of a planned coup in the USA in 1933
by right-wing American businessmen
The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt
with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were
alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America,
(owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott)
believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini
to beat the great depression.
Compliments of the BBC.
RIP Miss you already.

It was ALREADY painful BEFORE there was this "financial crisis bailout problem."
All their dire warnings about the awful things that COULD happen if we don't give them the $700,000,000,000 - unemployment, inflation, foreclosures, infrastructure collapse - DUH !!!
The problems on Main Street (created to profit Wall Street) had metasticized to the point that Wall Street was beginning to feel it too.
They don't seem to understand this interconnectedness thing about human society.

Orangutan. @ 31:
Do you know what is frustrating about this? If you look up the history concerning any other debate, you'd find no other candidate, left or right, subverting the process in this fashion.
It's already known that the RNC has a sort of revisionist history going on which fits around their "narrative" of American history. But, isn't this even disturbing to the GOP flag-wavers and patriots that their candidate is screwing with the tradition and the austerity which belongs to the election season? Aren't these people supposed to be "loyal" to their country? Don't they care?
On another note, these machinations show that McCain has a blatant lack of respect for Obama. I don't think he would have pulled this crap with any other opponent except for that time he cancelled a debate with Bush.
I can always be enlightened about other historical elections in which such a ruckus has been made. :)
R.I.P. Paul.... an amazing man.
MsJoanne @ 37:
I thought you were on your way to Germany.
Not to take away from any of McCain's good qualities, or belittle his sacrifice in the service of his country (he actually fought for his country unlike most of the current crop of chickenhawks), but why is he considered a hero? I do understand he went through some extremely harrowing treatment as a POW and lived to tell the tale... was it the reported fact that once offered to be sent home, he refused to leave if the rest of the POWs were not also released?
Different circumstances, I know, but is Kerry (wounded in action) not considered a hero as well?
MountainMan23 @ 42:
FREE LEVI!
But, that doesn't change the fact that right now Levi is America's number-one political prisoner. But, Levi, you don't have to be. This is the 21st century at least in the blue states. You don't have to do this. You have options. You can pull a - you know, a "Juno." F*ck, you LIVE in Juneau!
Or you could do what most people do with an unwanted child: give it to Angelina Jolie!
And, look, if you're worried about the baby, don't. I mean, let's get real, dude. The way you are, at 18, that baby is better off not being around you. You'll wind up losing it or shooting it or--it'll be on the bottom of your skate or something. Just - just let the Palin womenfolk look after it for a while. One more infant in that Mormon compound they call a house - won't bother anybody. They will barely notice another kid at the table.
And soon they won't even remember whose seed it was that produced young "Trink" or "Truck" or... Puck, or whatever f*cked-up redneck name the give it.
In any event, we here at "Real Time" have taken the liberty of purchasing the website, FreeLevi.org. There it is: "Free Levi." And, it is yours to use if you want to use it to get folks to contribute to some sort of liberty fund so you can get enough money to get out of that frozen meth lab they call a town.

MountainMan23 @ 42:
And because we have a nation which is not smarter than a fifth grader, it will probably work.
Between 1998 and 2002 I operated a charity called "Take to the Hills". It's mission was simple: collect warm clothes from rich people, put them in your car and then go out and find the very coldest, poorest most isolated people you could. Pretty neat idea, eh? Paul thought so too. With his help (via Newman's Own) I was able to clothe damn close to every village in the northwest Sierra Madres, and also bring along basic school and medical supplies.
I hate the fact that he's gone, but man, it's hard to be too sad about a life lived so well...a quote from him:
"I'd like to be remembered as a guy who tried — tried to be part of his times, tried to help people communicate with one another, tried to find some decency in his own life, tried to extend himself as a human being. Someone who isn't complacent, who doesn't cop out."

Her answer to the $7 Billion bail out question was the only exception - and it was ALMOST verbatim Palin's actual answer (except for the $1 lunch!).
The pundits don't reflect public opinion. China's leader is adapting the capitalist model of making broken promises.
In the 13 years David Moore worked for the Gallup Poll, he learned that media polls are not used to uncover the “will” or thoughts of the public, but rather to manufacture a “public opinion”

I was at the Gala screening of "The Glass Menagerie" when it opened at the Toronto Film Festival, years ago in 1987. Paul Newman was the director and came on stage with his team to do the introductions. It was at Roy Thompson Hall, a 2800 seat venue, I was sitting high-up in the C balcony. If I were sitting any higher I would have been on the roof. I looked down at Mr. Newman on the stage through my nearsightedness barely able to pick him out of the crowd he brought on stage with him to share in the moment. Then I thought to myself, "Wow, his eyes really are as blue as you see them on the big screen." Incredibly charismatic, incredible blue eyes, like lasers. Ronald Reagan was the President then and the conversation all night long in the concourse was about why this man wasn't in the Whitehouse instead of that other actor. (He would have won over the NASCAR voters if he had ever run, that's for certain). He left the world a better place than he found it, that's what we should all aspire to. He was a great actor, but what more better can be said about a life lived? Thank-you Mr. Newman. Travel well.

MsJoanne @ 128:
Finding that old YouTube movie of this debate sure was a blast from the past. In retrospect, it's hard to believe that there was a time when our politicians were claiming that 30 000 nuclear warheads was NOT ENOUGH to keep us "safe," and URGENTLY needed to spend billions to build MORE. (Rinse, repeat for the "drug wars." Rinse, repeat for the "terrorism wars." Rinse, repeat for the Wall Street bail out "economic wars.") Of course, now the hawks have re-written history to say that Reagan turned up the volume on the arms race deliberately to bankrupt the Soviet Union, and thus get rid of it. Never mentioning, of course, that it was the Soviets themselves who elected Gorbachev, who dismantled the Soviet Union from within. And, as Linus Pauling used to say "the attempt to bankrupt the Soviet Union with an arms race appears to be a pretty good way of bankrupting OURSELVES, as well."
But, watching that debate, something suddenly occurred to me that didn't occur to me at the time. It was funny how the right was always in favor of building MORE nukes, and the left was in favor of building less. But the right always successfully managed to pull off the bullshit argument that it was the people who wanted to build FEWER nukes who were the cowards. ie-The people who were in favor of nuclear arms limitation were advocating that position out of fear, and if you advocated the other position, of building more nukes, you were brave. The desire to accumulate MORE weapons is AT LEAST as strongly driven by FEAR as the desire to limit weapons! That seems OBVIOUS to us now, but I just can't believe that the right managed to pull of that obvious lie so well back then, without it being challenged. Thank goodness we've matured a LITTLE bit since then, and have finally put the spotlight on the politics of fear. Once you show an audience how a magician's trick works, they are no longer fooled by it.

Of course, like I have for two years now. But there is no way dems would give that away. As stupid as this might turn out to be, I would bet my life on it.

You are talking about people that think it is perfectly acceptable to massacre a million Iraqis and torture people. What do you think the prospects are that they will turn over power to the American people peacefully?

Overall, as a democrat I felt that we were in the right and the republicans were corrupted capitalists. With this bailout I find it very hard to discern a difference in these two parties. Oversight is great, sure. But giving one penny to a corporation for successfully failing (an oxymoron which should be introduced into today's lexicon) is fascism - beyond socialism. This situation is so fucked up that 80-90% of the people say no bailout and both parties "agree" on a bailout like it is some bipartisan political game.
