“My part of Oakland is full of poor people. There’s at least one murder a week. Old creeps pimp out teenaged girls in broad daylight. You can buy crack or heroin 30 feet from my door, and two of my neighbors have been held up at gun point this summer. And the City of Oakland says they don’t have the police to stop any of that. But a bunch of people protesting the fact that rich people got a bail out and everyone else got nothing? The city shuts them down tight. Bang. Done. Riot act. Do you ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated? I do. Every day.”

The USA "PATRIOT" Act (commonly known as the "Patriot Act") is an Act of the U.S. Congress that was signed into law by President George W. Bush on October 26, 2001.

If we are going to take away privacy, it seems like it would be in the best interest of the taxpayers if the first people to lose it be the people/companies who get large amounts of our money... such as banks and military contractors.

Before the government could be allowed to track my phone calls, I want publicly available videos of everyone in Goldman Sachs 24/7, and everyone they do business with.

All over the country, police departments do this. They have screamed for years that they don't have enough money to do their jobs and that's why we lack proper police work. Then we see this shit. Why? They know it's a safe deal. Why, going to investigate a MURDER or ROBBERY might be dangerous! Harassing peaceful protesters is safe. The feds who harass marijuana growers and medical MJ shops are the same way. CA voted MM in -- why is the federal govt. wasting millions of dollars to shut everything down? It's safe, that's why. COWARDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! So the next time you hear the feds whining that they have no money, or lay off workers, tell them BS!

Bluestocking's picture

...one of the reasons why you're upset is because you've been brainwashed into believing that the police in a society are responsible for enforcing the law. That's what they should be doing, yes -- but that's actually not what they're really doing most of the time. What they're doing most of the time is enforcing the wishes of the dominant group within the culture, whatever it happens to be -- and in this culture, the "dominant group" means the wealthy. This is the reason why a poor thief in this country is treated far more harshly than a rich thief even though the rich thief is just as much of a criminal as the poor one, may have stolen far more money, and most likely did so purely out of greed rather than need. It's not the theft itself which causes the poor man's crime to be treated more harshly...it's the fact that he had the audacity and the gall to steal from his betters! The idea that justice is blind in this country is a joke...because the truth is that if you have enough money in this country, you can do just about anything you want to and probably get away with it (or at least not worry about suffering too much) as long as your victims are not people from your own class.

VIDEO: Police Lied About Using Flash-Bang Grenades

The police in Oakland are lying about the weapons they used, the frequency they used them, and who they hit with them, and more...

Today is the 10th anniversary of the signing of the un-"Patriot" act. That was pre-written and signed into law after the Anthrax attacks in the weeks after 9/11. Both of those crimes have gone unsolved. The anthrax was initially blamed on Muslims, then Steven Hatfill, then Bruce Ivins who died before ever going to trial. The FBI said they had no proof of Bin Laden's involvement in 9/11 and dumped his body at sea before he could ever be brought to trial. With all this police state funding and equipment we are failing to uphold our Constitution or the Rule of Law. It is truly like the novel 1984 by George Orwell. We all have to decide how we will act.

I've probably wasted too much of my life watching L&O, and CSI type (police friendly) shows. It is a recurring theme in these shows that the cops are always being hung out for the least insubordination, and demanded of to tow the line from up top. ... and that they feel too understaffed to be wasting time with internal investigations that can be covered up or denied if they all cooperate with each other.

Is this reality? I'm thinking it is a caricature... but I tells me some things about how to see the actions of the Oakland PD.

...we give them guns and the power to destroy or even end people's lives based solely on their own word. I was a victim of false arrest, the cops lied in every possible way on the arrest report - how do I defend against that? In my case, they were just fucking with me and dropped the charges after 6 months. But we give them that thing.

We give them POWER. The power to kill. The power to do pretty much anything they want, as long as they're careful about how they stage dress it.

There an old saying, and it doesn't go "power ennobles."

To think that this was caused by the 'police' because they felt the conditions at Occupy Oakland were somehow 'unsafe', and they end up maming and almost killing people over it.
They better stop these 'police riots' before someone gets killed. By 'they' i mean the mayors and those that order them in the first place.

at the Heritage Foundation ....that Obama is stoking 'class war' by Fear, Envy and Resentment of the rich folk.

A) I hate the use of the terms "class War" and how what we need to do is "fight" all the time to restore our rights and financial well being. It always seems to me that we are just succumbing to the modern psychology of everything as 'warfare'. Warfare is what we want to stop! But, the elites and the political class continually use this vocabulary and imagery so we, as citizens, end up fighting each other - instead of the injustice.

B) Which is the second point....I do not envy or feel resentful of anyone who has become wealthy through ingenuity, innovation, and plain old hard work. I have aspired to do better myself, and make progress in my career and financial position. That is what we call the American Dream .....to use the freedoms and rights we have in this land to improve the lot of our families and communities; that's why the immigrants keep coming!!

What I do resent, even hate, is that the corpora-fascists and banksters with the help of the politicians have circumvented the system and totally ignored the Rule of Law. They have lied, cheated, rigged the legal and financial systems, and totally perverted the basic principles of America.....not just that they have more money.

Not bad enough that the rights of the people to disagree with their government & do so peacefully are being ignored.
Not bad enough that the police, as individuals, either don't get that the protests include them in the oppressed...or just don't care.
Not bad enough that the police go in anyway, to enforce power, but that they do so in the cover of night...and with weapons. Weapons which can cause physical pain & damage to their fellow citizens.
Not bad enough, using weapons against crowds of people who are causing no threat to anyone...but to throw weapons into a crowd of people trying to help an injured person...lines have been crossed. Over a thousand people in Occupy Oakland are marching down the same street where they were attacked the night before. Apparently they were going to try to take BART to San Francisco to join the occupiers there but were not allowed access, possiblly due to their large numbers. Then they were possibly going to try to walk across the Bay Bridge but were also stopped from dong that. And, in S.F. there are police assembling on Potrero Hill to possibly raid the S.F. Occupiers. It's annoying getting the news from this network as they seem to be just waiting for violence to errupt like they're trained to report about riots as opposed to peaceul assemblies by nonviolent people. What's good, though, is that they are interviewing the occupiers in S.F. who are patiently and intelligently explaining to them what their purpose is. I most certainly hope that the S.F. cops are not going to raid the S.F. occupiers but a helicopter camera showed a massive number of cop cars and wagons on Potrero Hill. PLEASE DO NOT ATTACK THE S.F. OCCUPIERS!! Haven't the police learned anything?

The denial of use of rubber bullets when protesters are in possession of them should cast doubt on their assertion that they were attacked first.

It was 4:30 in the morning. Most people were sleeping.

Jafafa Hots's picture

some of them friends, the police flat-out told demonstrators that "chemical agents" would be deployed in 5 minutes if they didn't leave.

The protesters were milling around, some just sitting and relaxing, when much less than five minutes later the police opened fire.

The OPD has lied about everything, and they later admitted to some of the lies, but they keep up with others and add new ones.

The OPD has had the reputation as the most reactionary and violent police department in the country for decades. People in Oakland are totally used to this, it's routine. We get to see handcuffed prostrate non-moving people shot in the back point blank by cops - MURDER, and see the cops go after any witnesses to confiscate cell phones and cameras to try to cover it up, and we get to see the murderers go free.

Interesting note - before she became mayor and was an assembly member, Mayor Jean Quan joined with protesters outraged at this murder, was on the news - and the Oakland Police Chief threatened to have her arrested.

Do not believe a word the OPD says. Ever.

Ape-Man's picture

Ya, did they ever over react! Lobbing explosive canisters into a cluster of people that run to the aid of an injured citizen lying in the street is an appalling act. That should cost them their badges.

lsamsa's picture

to look at are the powers behind the police.
I'm certainly not excusing the police behaviour here...there s/b those in charge, on the scene, who need to control the officers' actions. They are responsible for controlling the situation & making judgements as to the appropriate actions by the officers. Apparently, there are too many who either can't make reasonable decisions or who are perhaps too power-hungry (or just *ssh*les) and who get off on 'showing others who is boss'.
I would guess that many of the officers question what they're doing & maybe feel badly about it, but don't want to lose their jobs & so follow orders & then get caught up in the melee that is allowed to happen.
The real problem is with the powers that order their police forces to disrupt & harm the protesters.
There are cities where the protesters are allowed to continue their stand, without the police intervening.
People supporting the movement need to focus their anger on those mayors who use their police forces as thugs & goons.

Ape-Man's picture

Yes, everywhere this happens the mayors and higher ups need to be held to account. for sure. It's the only way to prevent an escalation of our police forces' rioting on these peaceful assemblies.
Let's make it clear - the police are rioting, not the protesters.

How do you think they got the hardware and the training they're using? From the Feds. Why? To 'fight drugs', or more correctly, to fight drug cartels.

But who are they using the hardware on, now? Sure isn't the drug cartels. That's because it never really was meant for that.

The Uber Rich saw these days coming long ago, waaaaay back in the 1970's with their Club of Rome making dire predictions. They knew that sooner or later Capitalism would wind up eating its' own, with social breakdown ensuing. So they made their plans accordingly. And they hid it behind the rubric of the phoney Nixonian War on Drugs to make it palatable to the 99% who had to foot the bill for their own eventual repression.

So, here we are. Being savaged with War on Drug- justified, civil rights and life-destroying hardware being deployed against average citizens who foolishly believed that government would oh-no-never use it on them, only use it on the 'bad people', the 'druggies'.

Never give power to government that you are not willing to take back by force, for as Frederick Douglass said long ago:

If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet deprecate agitation, are men who want crops without plowing up the ground, they want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters. This struggle may be a moral one; or it may be a physical one; or it may be both moral and physical, but it must be a struggle. Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did, and it never will. Find out just what people will submit to, and you have found out the exact amount of injustice and wrong which will be imposed upon them; and these will continue until they are resisted with either words or blows, or both. The limits of tyrants are proscribed by the endurance of those whom they oppress. (Emphasis mine - M.)

morning in regards to the Brian Stowe beating and how the Dodgers defence was maping a strategy on how much Brian Stowe was responsible for his own beating.

Amazingly (but not surprisingly for anyone who's been to Dodgers Stadium) a good number of posters say Stowe deserved it for "talking smack" or some such bullshit.

Sure, everyone's a witness. Besides, there's no excuse for this type of assault.
