Ron Paul will defeat Mitt Romney in the Virginia primary - Progressive Brent Budowsky

In a dramatic head-to-head contest that will win huge attention throughout the political world, I now believe that Ron Paul will defeat Mitt Romney in the Virginia primary. The implications could be enormous. This result would dramatize the fact that a majority of Republican primary voters favor a candidate more conservative than Mitt Romney. This prospect could also inspire the mother of all money bombs for the Ron Paul campaign.

Ron Paul vs. Barack Obama [PIC]

How Ron Paul Could Win

In the Soviet Union common criminals were punished less harshly and received better treatment than political prisoners. A person who had committed a violent crime had more rights than someone who expressed criticism of the government and could be portrayed as having acted against the government. We now have the same situation in the US.

Both Republicans and Democrats have demonstrated disregard for the civil liberty protections guaranteed by the US Constitution. As it is now possible for the executive branch to take away the life and liberty of a US citizen without due process of law, the Constitution is for all practical purposes lost. Tyranny looms, and Ron Paul is the only candidate who stands against tyranny.

If truth be known, Americans are too divided and in opposition to one another to be able to unite against tyranny.

I agree with everything he said about Barack Obama. However, a small point.

I'm not crazy about the idea of "Ron Paul" and "OWS" being used in a way that insinuates they're allies. In many ways, his ideology is the antithesis of the movement.

"Tax the rich?" No. No way. All Taxes = Evil.
"Regulate the banks?" Regulation is the government blocking the invisible hand of the free market.
"Get big money money out of politics?" Paul argued for unlimited donations BEFORE Citizen's United.

And look, I know. I know. It's sad that you gotta choose between a guy who'll let you protest and use your constitution-given right to free speech while throwing your ideology in complete reverse and trying to live out Ayn Rand's version of what American should look like.

...And a guy who delivers weak, pathetic tweeks to your ideology while allowing the police to crush you, and moving us, (at least as far as civil liberties are concerned) further in the Bush/Cheney territory.

As Arianna Huffington remarked in a recent interview with AlJazeera when asked about whether she would vote for Obama again this year she said yes and added (paraphrasing): "In 2008 we were promised change, in 2012 we must choose between the lesser of two evils."

Violent Republican extremism?! What violent Republican extremism?! Oh, this violent Republican extremism...from just the past one week alone...

“I did not get in law enforcement to destroy a person’s future because that person had marijuana or a pill in their pocket,” the officer explained. “Why would you want to destroy that person’s future and cause them great harm because of that? It’s not worth it.”

We are NOT calling for the overthrow of the government. In fact, we are calling for the reinstatement of our government.

We are not calling for lawlessness. We are calling for an end to lawlessness and lack of accountability and a return to the rule of law.

Rather than trying to subvert the constitution, we are calling for its enforcement.

It has morphed into the modern fascist tactics used by today's pigs.

Catching snippets of the GOP debates/freak shows I'm more appalled by the audience reaction to their lunacy than their own detachment from humanity regarding their positions. Most of Nazi Germany's crimes could not have been committed without "auxiliary" help, that is to say normal citizens involved in either espionage or informant status. America circa 2012 = Germany circa 1933?

Electronic surveillance: the American SD?
Corporate money in politics: Nazi finances 1927-1933, and the Citizens United decision
Assassination of vom Rath: Hitler’s 9/11, Cheney’s opportunity
The Einsatzgruppen and the Predator drone
More of the same: the quest for energy security
Invented enemies: the use of terror to build compliant consensus
More of the same: propaganda techniques that keep recycling
Genocide: who remembers the American Indians?
Did Himmler ghost-write the Patriot Act?
Indefinite detention without trial.
Gitmo—America’s Dachau

(vom Rath was the German diplomat murdered in France by a Jewish ex pat named Herschel Grynszpan, which the Nazi's would use as a trigger for "Kristallnacht", or the "Night Of Broken Glass", in 1938. The Einstazgruppen were special detachments formed for the sole purpose of murdering Jews and would follow the Wehrmacht (army) into the occupied territories, while Dachau was the very first concentration camp and one of the very few on German soil, at first used for political prisoners and later high profile prisoners.Himmler was the head of the SS, of which the intelligence division, or "Sicherheitsdienst" was called the SD)

Radix Omnium Malorum Avaritia

No wonder – as Nazi leader Hermann Goering noted – the war profiteers are always trying to trick the people into supporting war:

Why of course the people don’t want war … But after all it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship … Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.

The Era of “Debt Capitalism” Has Come to an End
by Ralph A Stamm on Wednesday, 25 January 2012

After 40 years of economic growth based on debt, the era of “debt capitalism” has come to an end, says Wolfgang Streeck. The Managing Director of the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne gave a remarkable interview (in German) last week that I would like to share with you, in advance of the World Economic Forum’s meeting in Davos starting today.
Economies must grow in order to increase welfare. This has been the basic requirement for capitalist societies since the industrial revolution. Yet the last time Western societies experienced real economic growth was in the decades following WWII, says Streeck, in his account of recent economic history. Since the 1970s, when this period ended and economic growth slowed, governments started to print money in order to create the illusion of increasing salaries and greater welfare. In reality, however, income stagnated.
When decision-makers realized that high inflation rates could no longer be sustained, they looked for new recipes to keep the economy growing. In the 1980s, they found a solution in increased government spending based on public debt. Ronald Reagan was the unlikely representative of this policy.

The Bretton Woods Agreement of 1944, with its system of fixed exchange rates between currencies and support for countries that ran into balance of payments difficulties, together with the Marshall Plan (1947-50) for the economic reconstruction of Europe which followed it, laid the foundations for a quarter century of capitalist expansion the like of which had not been seen. Neither before nor since has there been a period where the global economy has grown as rapidly and the living standards of the working class, at least in the major capitalist countries, advanced as much.

But the Bretton Woods system did not overcome the essential contradictions of the capitalist economy. In fact, the very economic expansion it helped to produce brought them to the surface and eventually led to the demise of the regulated post-war order.

It is necessary to emphasise this point in the face of claims by proponents of Keynesian regulation that there can be a return to the stability of the post-war period and the social reformist policies which accompanied it, if only agreement can be reached on some kind of revived Bretton Woods Agreement. The advocates of this program, however, never examine why the original system collapsed.

The history of this breakdown involves two interconnected processes—the development of an increasingly global system of production and finance, and the relative decline of the US within the Bretton Woods order and its move towards a new regime based on the free movement of capital in order to maintain its position of global hegemony…

I watched "Missing" again tonight. Last time I watched was when it was originally released in 1982.

It's the chilling story of the torture-death of an American (with State Dept knowledge and complicity) during the American backed coup in Chile in Sept 11, 1973, when the democratically elected President Allende was replaced by Dictator Auguste Pinochet, ushering in two decades of brutal repression and enforcement of NeoLiberal Milton Friedman Chicago School of Economics "reforms", some of which still cripple Chile today - for instance the privatization of the school system which has led to student occupations of the school buildings, nation-wide street marches and police riots.

It's a chilling story. It could happen here, now that the American "Homeland" has been declared part of the international battlefield by our Esteemed Congress and our Imperial Presidency.

I was a student at UC Berkeley when Governor Reagan declared martial law and brought in the troops. Most of them were our age - they joined the National Guard to avoid being drafted to fight in Vietnam. So as military occupations go it was relatively mild. They sure weren't as brutal as the Alameda County Sheriffs - same thugs who routinely brutalized the Oakland Occupation recently. Regardless it was chilling to have a curfew, from something like 9 PM to 6 AM. Anyone on the streets at those hours was subject to brutalization without provocation, and many people suffered injuries. That was then. This is now.

I strongly suggest everyone watch Missing. It's not easy to watch. Make sure you've got 2 hours and time to reflect afterwards. Then think about the Indefinite Detention Provision of the NDAA that allows the American military to take people into custody here in the US and what the implications would be to have our streets occupied by American troops. Or Blackwater type mercenaries hired by "our" government.

Missing is a 1982 Academy Award winning film directed by Costa Gavras, and starring Jack Lemmon, Sissy Spacek, Melanie Mayron, John Shea, Charles Cioffi and Janice Rule.

It is based on the true story of American journalist Charles Horman, who disappeared in the bloody aftermath of the US-backed Chilean military coup of 1973 that deposed the democratically elected, leftist President Salvador Allende. ..

Radically Moderate ad infinitum's picture

....after you posted it a few days ago and derived more out of the movie than I had when it was first released. We know so much more about the direct involvement by rogue elements of our country and the Friedmanites using the opportunity to force their austere and untested economic theories onto a naive populace of a sovereign nation.
The movie should be an icon for R-Wing economic incompetence and yes, everyone should watch it.
The following night after watching Missing I sat down and watched "A Farewell to Arms" based on the book written by Ernest Hemingway. The movie was made in 1956 and the fictional story is about an American volunteer-soldier who drives an ambulance for the Italian Army during WW1. At some point it occurred to me that the American in the story was a metaphor for American ham fisted, knuckle dragging foreign policy. At best our nation seems to be naive enough to think that we can take possession of anything, americanize it,possess its very spirit, and from the goodness of our hearts we spread our exceptionalism onto the populace. At worst we are the neighborhood bully that believes that our exceptionalism is the savior of the world......wether the world desires it or not.
However the American 'Leftenant wants to create this utopian world for himself unencumbered by the war that rages around him and destroying the lives of those around him while leaving him the opportunity to walk away and onto the rest of his life, scarcely harmed with bravado intact.
Thanks for the post. :^)

'Talk to the hand'

The last remark by Jack Lemmon (Ed Horman, father of Charles) as the movie ends struck home.

As he was passing thru the gate to board the flight back to the US, two or three US Embassy personnel were there, "seeing him off", and he swore when he got back to the states he would sue all of them (which he did).

He said (paraphrase): "Thank God that in the US we still put people like you in jail."

Of course his suit was dismissed. None of the Americans complicit in the coup ever went to jail.

Just like Bush, Cheney, the Banksters, etc.

It could be a very depressing movie. But I think we should take it as a warning instead.

Glad you watched. You're welcome for the post. Pass it on ..

Your remarks about American foreign policy are spot on. We continue the same imperialist strategy that the Spaniards used in conquering the "new world" - invade, occupy, repress, install puppet regime, exploit.

Contrast the Chinese approach. Forge business ties. Mutual benefit.

Police in Oakland, California, have used tear-gas and flash-grenades as a 2,000-strong Occupy Oakland march turned violent, with some protesters claiming that rubber bullets had been also fired into the crowd. At least 300 people were arrested, police say.

The demonstrators attempted to take over a vacant building to use as their headquarters. As they began tearing down perimeter fences around the HenryJ. Kaiser Convention Center, police declared an unlawful assembly and used force, according to the Oakland Tribune newspaper.

So I guess I should add bestiality and intermarriage with preexisting species? I'm pretty sure there's something scatologically Kafkaesque we could put in to epitomize Santorum, but I'm eating just now!

“The Los Angeles Police Department will be providing support for a joint military training exercise in and around the great Los Angeles area,” the release stated. “This will be routine training conducted by military personnel, designed to ensure the military’s ability to operate in urban environments, prepare forces for upcoming overseas deployments, and meet mandatory training certification requirements.”

If only the government had some credibility left. But after more than fifty years of lies, deceptions, and cover ups, they don't.

From where I'm currently sitting, the government has earned no credence since William Penn left. Ask the Lenni Lenape, Oneida and Shawnees! How to be Imperialists overseas; if our kids, forced by cruel circumstance into the military that eats >51% of our taxes, are occupied enforcing our feudal peonage here at home? I have been looking for the pic of Ron Paul that accompanied a story about Newt's Ambassador to the moon. I thought it was on C&L, but it may have been linked to. The pic was Ron Paul dressed in a silver Flash Gordon like outfit, (helmet and all). Anyone have a link to the story with the pic?

Max explains Sphincter Economics in another brilliant episode.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T-aaziL6EDo&fe...
In this episode, Max Keiser and co-host, Stacy Herbert, discuss the State of the Banana Republic, the blowout at Apple with its profits 'trapped' overseas and the gloomy State of the Stiff Upper Lip as UK family debts soar by nearly 50%. And, finally, Max and Stacy examine a proposal that bankers, like Goldman Sachs' Lloyd Blankfein and JP Morgan's Jamie Dimon, should compete like strippers on the open job market.

We have seen how far right Obama and the spineless Dims have gone in order to raise reelection funds.

And the Republicans cheat.
