I'm going to say NO, for Christmas anyway (and most days, actually). No gifts (given or received) and a feast of steamed broccoli and peanut butter toast (really nice bread).
Off to check out the link. I'm very interested in things about ego. I already watch TV with this in mind, 100% of the time. I can't help it.
(I'm more into the human condition than politics, in case no one has noticed.) ;)
For me, all the ads are in Korean, so I don't know what they are saying. When I do watch, I pay very close attention to imagery and tricks used in filming, and the models/actors. If I do watch (usually I mute and close my eyes) it's astouding to see how another culture sees itself.
I can tell you, what's on TV is not what I see out in the streets!!!!! Fantasy meet reality.
Edit: I posted this quote yesterday in a thread:
"You can tell the ideals of a nation by its advertisements." Norman Douglas, British author, 1868~1952
I've been interested in this for some time. It's not just the ads either, it's in every TV show and most movies too.
It is a powerful documentary which describes, unfortunately the purposely dysfunctional condition of our society.
You can listen to the dialogue which is quite informative without the pictures.
The propaganda began in WWI with the Creel Commission and was taken up thereafter by the advertisers whose job it was to create mass consumers for the products of the ramping up mass producers.
Stuart Ewen describes it as Pavlovian Psychology, others point to Freud and certainly his nephew Edward Bernays.
Just finished watching (whole thing) and highly recommend it. I'm not immune to it, but I've been onto this for quite some time myself. (I can't do anything without thinking about it, and I mean nothing at all.)
or just never followed the Iran Contra debacle don't worry Iran-Contra is not over. The activity never stopped to this very day, only the scandal faded away.
My sister came down from Minnesota for the holidays. She was the Communications Coordinator for the non profit "Clean Water Action", but lost that gig after thirteen years. She started as a canvasser. She has several interviews so we aren't sweating it.
I finished well for my first semester since 1988.
Intro to Criticism: A
Political Analysis: A
Intro to Comparative Politics: A
American Lit I: B
You might be saying, "jhunter, how did you get As in the senior level courses and not the sophomore American Lit?"
Because my evil neocon American Lit professor thinks the colonization of the North American continent was "God's work". I am serious. She gave me a D on an A paper I wrote about a "captivity story".
So it goes.
We took our mom to Wei Houng Bakery on South Grand in our city of cities, St. Louis MO.
First Course: Salt and Pepper Squid and Combination BBQ Plate (Pork, Duck and more PORK!)
Second Course: Shrimp Chow Fun and Pea Tips in Garlic Sauce
Dessert: Thai Iced Coffee and Sesame Red Bean pastry.
We normally don't eat very much meat that isn't organic and humanely processed, but today was different.
Next semester starts January 4th for me. I am taking an "intersession" class called "Politics in Film" which is taught by my mentor. Three easy credits for watching movies. My mentor asked me what movies I would show and I could only add "Children of Men" and "A Face in the Crowd" to his list.
The regular semester starts January 19th. I will be taking...
Civil Liberties
Congressional Politics
Interest Group Politics
Spanish I
I was going to take "History of American Labor" and "Labor Law" but the classes are at goofy times.
This summer and spring my friends and I will be working for the Tommy Sowers for Congress campaign. He is running for Missouri's 8th District. He has a tough fight ahead of him. My study of Missouri election history last semester shows a steady decline in vote share for Democrat candidates statewide, but especially in the two southern Missouri districts.
Have a merry Atheist Xmas. Because you can't really be a progressive until you throw away the idea of god!
Just look for those who are indifferent to the suffering of others . . everyone who has sold out to the dark side and who skates through this tormented world on their bank accounts and phony smiles.
I would like Goldman Sachs and The Rothschild banks rendered bankrupt and everyone who works for them made homeless and objects of ridicule to everyone they meet.
from being homeless and are objects of ridicule to their higher ups there anyway. So it's nothing to them their hardened. We can give them the proceeds from the liquidation sale.
May I make a request that we have a mid-day open thread every week eay?
My tummy is full and the day was wonderful. I hope everyone feels the same way. Merry Christmas everyone. This was the best holiday in many years thanks to the love and fun in my house today.
Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.
Has everyone over consumed?

I watched maybe 4 minutes but it made my head hurt.
I haven't watched TV since 1989.
The worst thing about TV is its power to set the rhythm of our minds.
That rapid fire insistent adrenalin charged rush of excitation ..
Carefully crafted to plant an urgent need ..
"Identity Through Consumption" - the brainchild of psychiatrists hired by Madison Ave advertising firms in the 50's.
You are the brand you wear, the brand you drive, the brand you smoke, the brand you drink ..
When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?
Not soon enough!
Amen brother!
I am sorry about your head.
I never watch TV myself either.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

Is our government really this wicked?
at all surprised. Seems like I get a little more disgusted with our government "leaders" with each day.

There's a reason people say "dirty effing hippies." They were the last large group to question authority, power and the MIC, or WashingtonInc.
We can't be having none of that; demonize them.
I was just a wee bit young (born 1960) but I still remember an unmistakable feeling in the air. I loved it.
Still listen to this all the time. It's in my portable MP3 player now.

The correct punctuation is:
God rest ye merry, Gentlemen.

Perhaps the only Christmas tradition I have is watching this movie every year since I was a kid.
My favorite version of them all. Finney is excellent as Scrooge.
