One Word for Inauguration Day.

This is a wonderful video. Artist Emily Troutman "asked people in DC to pick words to represent how they feel this week, at the dawn of a new beginning for the United States. Participants chose from 26 words:

Alive, Angry, Anxious, Awed, Believe, Curious, Dancer, Excited, Grateful, Happy, Hopeful, Human, Humble, Jealous, Joyful, Love, Obama, Patient, Proud, Ready, Scared, Skeptical, Tired, Together, Wonder, Worried."

While Troutman shows a few people who chose skeptical or worried, she points out that "Children tended to choose the words Love and Obama because they are easy. But happy was a close third. For the other participants, Hopeful and Proud won the day. People with family or friends chose Together to represent the importance of experiencing the inauguration with the ones they love."

I think I felt every one of those words plus "relieved"

Relieved is a good word to express my sentiments.

They could have included the word "indifferent" since that's generally how most people are.

We've got nothing to lose, and the simple fact that the Monster President is gone things are obviously immediately better.

)O(

The Morning Nudes, and some of it's letter writers, are outraged, outraged I telz ya, that boosh was booed.

that they are now in the minority. Kinda sucks when you've been running things for so long, only to find out that most of the villagers really don't like you, and want you to sit down and shut up.

)O(

A letter writer today claimed there were 300,000 people cheering boosh when he landed in Texas, with no indication where that number came from, probably larger than the town he landed in, and still no pictures of this crowd.

They shouldn't depend on the media to present this image in this age of cell phone pictures and the internet.

It was also kind of enlightening. I noticed that a lot of the people who chose negative words did not want to show their faces.

Wonder why?

I know that there is a perception that they will be ridiculed, but skepticism and anxious are words that are more cautious. That's not a bad thing in times like this.

Personally my word would be hopeful and if I got two, I'd add, Excited.

wheres the peace now sighns?

Relief.

I feel like Theoden from 'Lord of the Rings' after Gandalf breaks Saruman's spell. "Stand tall, and breathe the free air again."

Now all we need are the Wormtongues to be kicked out of town.

For the first time in eight years, that is.
Oh, and I second Shadowgm's analogy, which is not only appropriate but borrows from a favorite, LOTR.

But let's not forget what happened because Aragorn stopped Theoden from killing Wormtongue...

... Wormtongue spilling the beans on Helm's Deep that worries me, it's that later, when they depose Saruman and send him on his way, he despoils the Shire.

They're not gone, and they're not powerless.

we can't ever forget that either...

Perhaps after seeing Obama ordering drone missiles into Pakistan, where they killed innocent Pakistani civilians, or watching him close down Guantanamo Bay [a year from now] without also ordering Bagram to be closed, which is much worse than Gitmo, or hearing Obama avoid the mention of the word Gaza in his inauguration speech, despite the fact that over a thousand Palestinians have been slaughtered by Israeli bombs which were supplied by the U.S. and the fact that approximately 85 per cent of Gazans have had no access to medical supplies, then one wonders if seeing someone should have been holding up a sign entitled Fooled. Or does this happen after Obama gives the approval of sending 30,000 more American soldiers into that quagmire called Afghanistan?

Damn dude...how much do you expect him to get done in the first week?
We all knew he wasn't goin to be like a knight in shining armor, riding in to save the fuckin day...He can't possibly make everyone happy all the time.
So while your opinion is always welcomed, please ease up a little on Obama, at least for a while...he's got his hands quite full right now.

i would like to see what cindy sheehans sighn would be! would it read thank god our troops are now going to die for an intelligent man! i think not !

...Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck have bended many minds. Any fair thinking person knows that cleaning up these multiple gigantic shit piles will take years.

LiberalNmoderation

"...Ease up a little on Obama..." Ease up? I suspect that you will find this shocking but I have a hell of a lot more sympathy for those families whose children and mothers and husbands and fathers and grandparents and brothers and sisters have been recently ripped apart and scattered across Pakistan by American missiles than I have for another militant American president. Perhaps the question that you may wish to ask yourself is why are you so eager to put party over principle? But that is assuming that you actually have one iota of empathy for those Pakistanis who were blown all to hell under the orders of that [alleged] agent of hope [but certainly not to the Pakistanis or the Afghans or the Palestinians], Barack Obama.

"He's got his hands quite full right now." Try explaining that to the families of those dead Pakistanis as they attempt to come to terms [if they ever will] with the misery and grief and suffering that they have had to endure because of the murderous actions of Barack Obama.

Drink the koolaid. Before he was elected, it was "he isn't Prez yet". Then after the election it was "he isn't Prez yet." Then at inauguration, it was "he was just sworn in". Then it was "he's only been Prez for a short time". Now it's "give him the first 100 days"....After a year, it'll be "It's only been a year, jeez, Bush took 8 years to do this." Then it will be "it's just his first term, wait till his second term." Then it will be "It's not his fault, it's all Bush's fault"......seems odd that people wanted to hold Bush's feet to the fire, but want to give Obama a free pass on everything because he's a Dem.

well i took obama at his word when he said he intended to widen the war in afganistan and i was against it, it smacked of busholini lite, and i said so, and i was given the same answers you mentioned concerned canuck if obama had the time to declare afganistan was the right war while he was running for president he had enough time to reason out that these were bushes wars and not ours!

holding meetings to determine what exactly to do about the economy. They've been holding meetings since the election. They've been holding meetings since the inauguration. They still don't have a 100% idea of what they are doing. Apparently those meetings are full of photo ops, but not substance. Nero couldn't fiddle as long.

the absolute CLUSTERFUCK that bush left us...
I mean the absolute enormity of what Obama is facing would/DID make lesser men shit themselves.
Really Canuck...do you think he can just snap his fingers and fix this huge mess?
No, he's got to deal with other politicians who would love to see him fail.
He's getting shit done, have SOME patience.
If it's not as fast as you'd like, maybe you should do something about it, instead of complaining.

The MESS that Dick and George made is with out precedent. The hole this country and our economy is in is bigger than most of us will ever know. I choose to trust President Obama. I wonder the same thing of Canuck...does he expect Obama, or anyone else, to just snap their fingers and everything will be roses and crackerjacks? I choose to believe, trust and have faith. Don't let people like Canuck piss all over that.

Normally, Canuck and I are pretty much in agreement on most topics...but not on this one.

It's all good though, if everyone had the same opinion, nothing would ever change for the better.

We held bushies feet to the fire because the congress, senate, or the media(with a few exceptions) wouldn't, doesn't, and apparently won't.
And rightly so, because bush is a fuckin war criminal.
Obama isn't...if however, Obama starts goin down the same path as bush, then damn right, I'll be holdin his feet to the fire too!
But it's early yet, REALLY early..and I'm gonna give Obama the benefit of the doubt...for a bit.

Party over principle?
Me? You obviously haven't been on here very much lately.
If you were him? How would do it.
We're at war, and whether or not you agree with either war, you must admit that we're still fighting them.
Maybe Obama had intel on some terrorist fuckstick, and wanted to take him/them out.
Maybe his intel was bad...which as we've seen with the last administration, happens quite a bit.

I do of course have sympathy for any innocent civilian who gets killed, for any reason.
I don't care for him sending a missile into Pakistan either.
I'm just saying...that Bush did far worse (that doesn't excuse Obama's decision to send a missile without actionable intel), and we're still finding out more and more fucked up shit that happened under his watch every day...
And calling Obama militant is a bit of a stretch I think. He's not exactly a dove, but he damn sure ain't no hawk.

LiberalNmoderation

One wonders where to begin rebutting such drivel. "We're at war." Perhaps I was out of the country when war was declared but I do not believe that Congress has ever declared war against either the Iraqis or the Afghans or those dreaded terrorists in the so-called bogus GWOT.

You state that "MAYBE Obama had some intel..." Inevitably every time the U.S. launches missiles and bombs into a foreign country they end up killing innocent civilians based on erroneous intelligence.

"Bush did far worse..." Another liberal trying to provide excuses for liberals killing innocent people. You may have bought into the propaganda but I have not.

Just like Rush the junkie rapist and Billy "I beg for sex" OReilly, you people never intend to give the man any credit.

I can see that you're not wanting to hear anyone's take on it other than those that are in 100% agreement.
I personally have had enough of that mentality.
Have a nice day.

"he's got his hands quite full right now"

and for the next 3 of his lifetimes

after bush :>(

Overrated. Rhetorical. Exaggerated. Partisan.

The fucking sky is now falling and it's all Obama's fault.

The fucking economic sky is falling. Go read the Stimulus package. 600 pages of mostly pork.

)O(

You don't like Canadian Bacon?

Whaddya put on your pizza, anchovies?

I was there. And you are absolutely, positively, 100% WRONG!!!

You know full fucking well that we all are better off with Obama as President compared to the alternative...but instead of being grateful the man saved your ass from the nutty old man and his dumb bitch, you keep trying to offer everyone premature piss to drink while attempting to suggest that Obama is a lateral move from President Ted Bundy...bullshit.

You mean Obama hasn't solved every problem on the planet yet? Hell, he's been President for an entire WEEK already!!

Damn it, why did anyone vote for this guy?!?

I guess some people just want something to complain about

Day after day, week after week, thread after thread.

To these people who do nothing but bitch, apparently McCain would have been their choice.

I am so fucking sick of these people going off first before Obama was sworn in and in every single fucking thread thereafter. The mutual masturbation between tyree and CC, who want...who knows what, and the continual negativity of anything and everything is beyond depressing. Think Prozac, boys. It might just help.

Yeah, McCain would have been sooooooooooooooooooo much better. He would have righted all of Bush's wrongs in an hour or two. And Palin would have been a boon for our entire country and way of life.

Honestly, the ongoing negativity is disgusting - beyond disgusting. Maybe you guys would be better served over at Redstate. You words are certainly not finding much of a welcome here.

I was there, and I booed, but the restraint among the crowd that obviously did not like Bush was, actually, admirable, considering what a major fuck-up Bush was.

)O(

I was impressed how silent the crowd was when boosh and the repigs came out, and then Obama came out and there was this rolling thunder of ovation

And presumably ovulations.

And the crowd was noticably quiet when Reid and Pelosi came out, too.

)O(

I did notice it without noting it, because at that point I wasn't sure if applauding was allowed. Good, maybe we can send these two home too.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/u...

HAVE GOT TO GO.

i will tell the widow and children of the new war dead as they stand over the freshly opened graves that will recieve thier son or daughters that at least we got rid of the ignorent bastard who made it more painful for the loss of ones family member you should be relieved to have sacrificed a loved one under obamas more intelligent war of choice! i know id feel better! not!

What would YOU DO differently Tyree?

well you wont like the answer lib , but here it goes get the hell out of iraq and afganistan , let them rise or fall on thier own, and dont give me the old standby answer we broke it we fix it! you cant bring the war dead back by more killing ,

That's what caused this mess in the FIRST place Tyree...
Leaving them high and dry, like we did to Afghanistan in the 80's worked out SOOOOO well. Let's do it again! Riiiiiight...
We absolutely can't leave Afghanistan like that.
Iraq, I'm pretty sure is ready for us to get the fuck out of there country.

Because Iraq siphoned off so many troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban has regained a foothold there...we simply can not leave them with the Taliban in any kind of position to take over again...

We MUST learn from history Tyree...if not...then we deserve our fate.

lib you want to learn from history ? then learn ! we left vietnam in such a hurry we dumped tons of equipment into the ocean , we left in a hurry , even though the slogan at the time was if vietnam falls the whole of south east asia falls to communism ! hows that working out for youall? and how long are you willing to kill more in afganistan 10 yrs ? 50yrs? are you willing to serve there are you willing to send your kids there, when will the next bunch of so called taliban or what ever you want to call them next take over from the last batch of people who want our ass handed to us on a platter like the russians wound up!

..we did not really invade Iraq or push further into Afghanistan in order to bring democracy to those countries, save the people and bring them from the 7th century into the 21st.

We went there to steal their oil/natural gas, and other resources - or at the very least to ensure that the USofA has control over the region which is so "vital" to our economy, way of life, etc., And, of course, to ensure that the neo-cons could bulk up on thjeir own power and wealth.

I doubt we'll be "leaving" any time soon.

Pretty huge, I'd say.
And right on the money too.
And Tyree, I'm trying to learn, but I'm stubborn, so bear with me.
And hell no I don't want us to be there that long.
I don't have the answers, and I'm not saying mine is the only POV worth considering either, but I don't think that a hasty exit would be a good thing.
And I'm perfectly capable of changing my mind if more compelling reasons surface.

LiberalNmoderation

"... But I don't think that a hasty exit would be a good thing." I remember those same exact words being said concerning the United States' involvement in Vietnam and as a result close to 60,000 American military personnel lost their lives as well as three to four million Vietnamese people for absolutely no justifiable reason whatsoever. A few days ago 18 Afghan civilians were blown apart by American bombs. I strongly suspect that the Afghans along with the Pakistanis would be most in favor of the United States finally withdrawing its military from their countries as rapidly as possible in order to prevent any more civilians being used as cannon fodder for American imperialism.

Or are the lives of those brown people being blown to bits by American bombs not compelling enough reasons for you to change your mind?

That's kind of offensive dude. I'm not a fuckin racist. I'm fairly shocked that you'd imply as such.

I'm so totally not like that man.
War sucks period...doesn't matter what the skin color is of the innocents. Christ man. Thought I presented my views a bit better than that.

And I never said I had it 100% right, or even 1%, for that matter.

I'm just expressing MY opinions on the matter.

wtf where do you get i implyed your a racist?

where ever you got the idea i implyed your a racist was not from my post !i suggest you read again from what ever post you got that from !

Oops...I meant Erroll..

"Or are the lives of those brown people being blown to bits by American bombs not compelling enough reasons for you to change your mind?"

Subtle wording sure, but seems to me that you did imply that I don't care about people of different races...

and that's just not true at all.

we're experiencing...we can't afford to leave any usable equipment behind...that's not an option.

If it was, I'd be on board with that idea.

What was it that created the Osama bin Laden's of the world? The CIA in Afghanistan training them and then beating feet.

You cannot just up and leave. You have to have a thoughtful way to leave which won't leave a vacuum for the real extremists to fill.

It simply is not that easy.

Ms. Joanne

What created the Osama bin Laden's of the world is what is rarely, if ever, discussed in the media and those are two things, specifically:

1) The United States keeping its military in the Middle East.

2) The United States's symbiotic relationship to Israel which includes the missiles and bombs and F-16 fighter planes that the U.S. supplies to Israel.

You state "You cannot just up and leave." Yes, the United States CAN just up and leave. I heard that same erroneous assumption stated during the Vietnam conflict and now liberals like yourself have swallowed the propaganda handed out by such liberal hawks as Obama, Biden, Richard Holbrooke, et al.

While you and Obama are attempting to work out a "thoughtful" way to leave Afghanistan, U.S. planes wiped out 18 Afghan civilians two days ago. Last week Obama ordered drone missiles into Pakistan and as a result innocent Pakistanis were then killed because of Obama's actions. Are you, like Obama, going to claim that those civilians were terrorists? Or that, like the military said during Vietnam and is again repeating now, that this is all being done "for the good of the cause?"

I am not sure if this means anything to you but those people, who never threatened anyone in these United States, are gone. Even Obama, with all his [alleged] magical powers, cannot make them rise from their graves and rejoin their mothers and fathers and brothers and sisters and husbands and wives. And this is all done to justify the bogus GWOT while the reality [which you did not mention] is that it is the inflammatory presence of the United States military in the Middle East and Pakistan which serves as an extremely effective recruiting tool for the terrorists. As long as the United States continues to produce leaders like Barack Obama who still stupidly insist, like LBJ had done, upon using military force against third world countries, terrorism will never be eradicated and innocent civilians will continue to have their body parts scattered to the four winds for absolutely no justifiable reason whatsoever.

I don't disagree with you on any particular point,
but the fact that we left Afghanistan high and dry, after we helped them fight off the Russians, is a HUGE factor in why we're back there now.

To deny that fact is folly.

Our leaving so abruptly, did indeed leave a power vacuum, and the Taliban filled that vacancy.

They gave asylum to Bin Laden where he was able to conspire and train his minions in secrecy.

I don't think anyone here posited that our leaving Afghanistan in the 80's was directly linked to 9-11.

But it did set the stage for someone to conspire to bring harm to us.

It's all connected Erroll...

Due to a series of inept policy decisions, poor planning, and a complete and utter non-understanding of ME sensibilities, not to mention US corporations doing unspeakable things in the name of US Capitalism all were part of why we're so hated around the ME.

)O(

If you read the article I linked to, the drones are a stepped up program from a year ago, stepped up from presumably a smaller effort even earlier. So far there's no indication that Obama ordered the strike, only that he did not send the order to withdraw the drones.

That's a question of so many pressing issues coming in at once.

I'd think we ought to keep the drones going at least for awhile with missiles loaded with some kind of powerful knock out gas. Then the Pakistani government can go pick up the prisoners, and if they don't, we know where they stand. The innocent civilians will probably for the most part be sick, but survive, as long as the missles explode in the air, maybe with something along the lines of flash-bang grenades modified for missles.

Not bad at all really.

the flaw with that idea ysb is that probably in most instence that anyone left not affected by the knockout gas will most probably be takeing thoes knockout victims to some where safe so thier not captured by the packistan government ,

and you can't really know which way the wind will be blowing any given moment.

yes thiers that to, besides as much as thoes missels cost i doubt they woul waste them unless they could kill somebody !

they do tend to go for the weapons systems that bring higher body counts.

)O(

That's why I was throwing in some flash bang type technology.

We used to call them stun grenades.

Those are concussive, but I'm not sure if they would be effective in the air if that's where they're exploded.

used in close quarters

I watched it on TV - like so many billions around the world - and my family and I stayed up to BOO cheney and bush - and some of us threw our shoes at the TV!!!

We wondered why there wasn't any booing by the audience there - but we accepted that maybe deafening silence was probably more appropriate.

However we watched clips later which showed quite clearly some people booing. some commentators said it was "bad form" and I'm guessing FoxNews would have called it treason to boo the worst US president in history!

And then Obama came out - and I think the whole world cheered (well except bush and his republican henchmen) and we waited for his speech!

when he thanked bush for his presidency and generosity during the transition - our jaws dropped and we watched in stunned disapproving silence!

But our faith was once more restored when he lashed out at the last 8 years of fvck ups, corruption, war, incompetence etc etc - and the camera showing bush grimacing - we cheered once again!

And this video - the song "human" and the beautiful images - made me cry a bit just now.

Bit worried about the anti-gay protestor though. And why were there others who were "skeptical"?

just curious.

Who did the sound track. please?

The song is "Human" by The Killers.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6r4KT8-VX0

???

"Human" by the Killers??? Kinda oxymoron-ish....

One word? Engaged.
Obama has the attention of the world, and the Democratic party. Liberalism is alive! And Allen McDuffee agrees.
http://www.governmentalityblog.com/my_weblog/...

this morning obama calls for the countrys sending arms and ammunitions to palistine for thier selfdefence be stopped while never mentioning he will suspend arms and ammuniton to israel , home is where the heart is, lets keep feeding the killers who like shooting fish in a fish bowl! the truth is if israel didnt know it can replenish its war arsenals with american supplys from american tax payers dollars such as whitephosperous and cluster bombs anytime they need them maby they would save what they have left for a rainy day, as for afganistan thiers a fact thats over looked by thoes whos argument is we have to stay there, one that countrys ruled by the warlords in the mountains not kabul , two it was the same in vietnam the vietnamese people didnt want the rich bastards in siagon telling them what to do or think, as every villiage had a complete government and paid no allegiance to any central government , we can never win in afganistan , we can never bring back the civillans lives we took there, we can never fix what we flucked up there and they will never forget that american boots trampled on thier soil!

the truth is that america sticks its nose into to many countrys buisness to prop up or install puppet governments , at the end of ww1 the brittish talked woodrow willson into invadeing russia because the russian arastocracy urged the priminister of englad to intercede on thier behalf to regain power in russia , and willson agreed and sent american troops that were supposed to be fighting in france to russia supposedly to be joing by the white russians fighting against the red russians , he sent them ,i believe it was a michigan divison and without declareing war we went , the people of michigan were not informed that the sons they sent to war were not in france but were freezing to death in russia fighting a war in 6ft snow and deserted by the white russians , starveing because the seas had frozen and they could not be supplyed or evacuated untill the spring thaws, another example of american blundering!

)O(

This is moronic on so many levels.....
