On another subject, I mentioned this briefly on another thread, about Moyers show on PBS this evening. In the first half of the show he 'interviewed' William Black, who served as a senior regulator during the clean-up of the savings & loan debacle back in the late 80's.

Mr. Black made no bones about stating that what is going on with our economy is out-and-out fraud being perpetrated by the gov't, banks, insurance cos, and our friends on Wall Street. I didn't learn much new from him, but I thought it was refreshing to actually hear a person with some knowledge and authority speak so bluntly about the mess we have and who's responsible.

As I listened, I was lamenting the fact that Spitzer could have helped to alleviate some of this pain if they Bush goons hadn't brought him down.

So I'm over at my parents' house tonight, and after a very pleasant dinner, we're talking in the living room. My father is watching the clock for "his show" and when BOR comes on the screen, dad's glued and the volume is turned way up so he doesn't miss a beat. I tell him, like I always do, that people who watch this show fail current events quizzes and that he should watch a real news show. He ignores me, like usual, and watches BOR go into a tirade about Obama's speech in France.

BOR plays a clip of Obama explaining to his audience that the USA will be nicer to European nations, I predict that he's going to call Obama anti-American. I am proven right.

BOR plays a clip of Obama speaking French words and preaching peace. I predict that he'll turn it into Obama trying to turn us French, and lo and behold, O'Reilly's next "Talking Point Memo" is that he's using propaganda to shrink our American pride and lower our nation to the level of every other country, as if we're on a moral pedestal in the first place.

I give one more swell prediction when a clip shows Obama talking about global cooperation to fix the financial mess he inherited. I say he's going to call Obama a socialist. Instead, he calls him a communist. As far as I'm concerned, I'm 3 for 3, and Dad's mad.

Because of O'Reilly's bullshit, and because I called him on it in front of my brainwashed father, I get a glass of water thrown on me. In my nice clothes. By my dad. Because he loves Bill O'Reilly more than his librul daughter.

Yeah, there's issues with my dad, but sweet fucking Jesus Christ on a bike, Bill O'Reilly is Satan, or he at least signs contracts with him. This is what this asshole has brought to the world. I won't threaten any harm to him, but I'm going to dance the day he leaves this earthly realm.

Administration Seeks an Out On Bailout Rules for Firms

The Obama administration is engineering its new bailout initiatives in a way that it believes will allow firms benefiting from the programs to avoid restrictions imposed by Congress, including limits on lavish executive pay, according to government officials.

Administration officials have concluded that this approach is vital for persuading firms to participate in programs funded by the $700 billion financial rescue package.

The administration believes it can sidestep the rules because, in many cases, it has decided not to provide federal aid directly to financial companies, the sources said. Instead, the government has set up special entities that act as middlemen, channeling the bailout funds to the firms and, via this two-step process, stripping away the requirement that the restrictions be imposed, according to officials.

Although some experts are questioning the legality of this strategy, the officials said it gives them latitude to determine whether firms should be subject to the congressional restrictions, which would require recipients to turn over ownership stakes to the government, as well as curb executive pay.

The administration has decided that the conditions should not apply in at least three of the five initiatives funded by the rescue package.

This strategy has so far attracted little scrutiny on Capitol Hill, and even some senior congressional aides dealing with the financial crisis said they were unaware of the administration's efforts. Just two weeks ago, Congress erupted in outrage over bonuses being paid at American International Group, with some lawmakers faulting the administration for failing to do more to safeguard taxpayers' interests.

For a millionaire, Gov. Mark Sanford has a reputation for frugality that borders on the extreme.

On Friday, just before the Obama administration’s deadline, Mr. Sanford became the last governor to certify that he would accept some stimulus money, but declared that he would not accept the $700 million largely designated for education unless the legislature agreed to use a similar amount to pay down the state’s debt. (He did, however, accept most of the remaining $2.1 billion for Medicaid, transportation and other uses. Only Mr. Sanford and Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska have rejected the education money.)

As much as Mr. Sanford’s stance has increased his national stature and stoked speculation that he will be a candidate for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, it has earned him the fury of many people at home.

The leaders of the South Carolina General Assembly, fellow Republicans, are counting the days until his term ends in January 2011. The state’s most conservative newspapers have sharply criticized him. The superintendent of education, the president of the public university system and the director of the State Law Enforcement Division — a member of the governor’s cabinet — have all protested his stance.

Even Republican allies like Senator Lindsey Graham, who opposed the stimulus package, have been in a tight spot. In one news release, Mr. Graham criticized Education Secretary Arne Duncan’s assertion that he would force the governor to take the money. But Mr. Graham added that the state should accept the money.

Through the tumult, Mr. Sanford has remained unperturbed. “I think the fatal flaw of a lot of people in politics is that they want to be loved,” he said Friday in an interview in his office. “I sleep like a baby at night.”
