Wow, I am sitting here stunned but extremely happy. I just watched John McCain give his concession speech (please excuse my spelling), and I have to give him credit, he was gracious (I almost felt sorry for him.......ALMOST). I feel so proud of this country and excited for the future. I'm not expecting Obama/Biden to fix the ills of the world, but I just feel they will bring a different approach to tackling all the things that need to be fixed in this country.

I know that there is such a thing as a sore winner, but I really wish we could all give the middle finger to Palin and McCain. They went so nasty the last week that I was afraid of disappoinment. But now such joy fills my heart, it's wonderful; can't remember when I felt the same way.
God bless our President Barack Obama.

Amazing not a word from Bin Laden this election. But we have heard from his son, who picked election eve day to apply for asylum in Spain. Does anybody think this is significant?

This son who married a British woman but was denied asylum in Britain. He has been living Cairo and two days ago, he took a flight to Morocco but claimed asylum in transit in Spain.

Egypt was complicit with Bush's crimes. Egypt did most of the torturing. Maybe they were protecting Bin Laden's son and now that Bush is on his way out the door, Bin Laden's son wants out of the Middle East. Any thoughts?

Now that the election is effectively over for President, I guess the job here will be to keep the Democrats honest?

Will you be running any features on the (few) bad apples in the Democratic Party in future?

PS I'm very pro-left/Democratic (from Australia), not a wingnut and was hoping for the following in this order:

Saxby Chambliss getting the boot for what they did to Max Cleland
Norm Coleman getting the boot for the campaign he ran after Senator Wellstone's death (corollary - freepers heads exploding from the thought of Senator Al Franken).
Barack Obama being elected President (tick)
Joe Liebermann getting consigned to the political dustbin of history (tick?)
60 seat Senate majority
Complete destruction of the Republican Party so that they can be rebuilt towards something halfway decent and the wingnut axis can be banished into irrelevance (because one day in the far future, the Republicans will be re-elected again so hopefully they won't be so right wing in future - we can hope).

Heckuva Job, Fed?
It's No Joke: Fed Hires Failed Bank Executive
http://abcnews.go.com/Blotter/WallStreet/stor...

The Federal Reserve Bank is drawing jeers for hiring a former top executive from the now-defunct investment bank Bear Stearns to help it gauge the health of other banks.

"How's this for sweet irony?" business publication Portfolio.com needled the pick.

I don't know if I should laugh or cry.

Michael Alix was head of risk management for Bear Stearns for two years until the institution imploded this spring, a victim of its (risky) subprime-mortgage related investments.

Last Friday, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York quietly announced it had hired Alix to advise it on bank supervision.

"You're kidding me," said economic policy expert Dean Baker, of the Washington, D.C.-based Center for Economic Policy and Research. While he didn't know Alix personally, he said, "You would think [his record] would be a big strike against him."

I advocate humbly kicking their asses into the next century; since their worldview dates to 1860 it's only appropriate.

Seriously, it's time for Obama to do everything to reinvigorate the real economy in the USA, ideally through rebuilding infrastructure and making the US the world leader in green technologies of all type.

When you live in Japan you see a country with few resources, a language hardly anyone outside Japan speaks, and half the population of the US packed into a small space. But things work (generally), and returning to the US, as an ex-pat who loves his country, it's depressing to see how relatively run-down things are in a country with 10 times the resources and creativity.

Japan is also basically a middle-class country, showing you can amass wealth without making the counrty a Banana Republic of rich and poor. There's no reason with the natural and human resources available in the US that it can't rise again to a position of true greatness. It will take a lot of work, but let's hope this election is a a big first step.

Dems wasted the opportunity afforded them in 92-95, there can't be any excuse this time to just mow over the coming obstructionism from the right and make it happen for real this time.

Health Care, Green Energy, Social Justice, an end to the Police State--is it too much to hope for?

djhamlow's picture

Better start packing your bags, Dubya! Here's hoping you will get a free room in the Hague for war crimes against Iraq, hopefully with a free rope included. So long, sucka!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Goodbye, no good luck, and good effing riddance for destroying the US and Iraq!

Serendipitydude's picture

A little over half of us elected him--twice (okay, once). The problem, my dear Brutus.....

And McCain carried whites by 55-45%! Despite knowing how racist a lot of us white folks are I was still shocked by that.

Too soon to start celebrating our new-found post-racial mentality. It's a start, that's all. And it's undeniable that if Obama talked, looked, and acted less white he probably would have had the proverbial snowball's chance of getting nominated, much less elected.

But it's a start and I look forward to 8 years of this guy!

A comparison to North Carolina shamelessly taken from the comments: North Carolina has just slightly fewer voters than Georgia. NC had 4.2 Million votes for President this election. Georgia should have at least that many! (It also rained in much of NC today and was sunny in Georgia)
(Note that Georgia now has 3.5ish million votes cast) Republican Incumbent Saxby Chambliss is 'up' by .4% This smells worse than Florida 2000 & Ohio 2004...
This is personal, as an early voter...this is an outrage and I'll be taking it out on the Republican Secretary of State...who shoud expect no less than a call every hour on the hour until this malfeasance is made right

We don't inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children - Native American proverb
If being cold means there's no such thing as global warming, does being full mean there's no such thing as world hunger?

I just paid a visit to Sean Hannity's website, and there's an interesting little survey going on entitled: "How Depressed Are You?"

Heh.

One of the choices is "suicidal."

Our 8 year National nightmare of fear, war, arrogance, smirks and idiocy is almost over. Thank God.

This reminds me of the very excellent ONION (parody) headline from 2001 when Bush became President:

'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over'

Only 76 days? Great! How long until he is in shackles, renditioned and sent to the Hague for war crimes trials?

Remember the big lie of January 2001, that the Clinton administration "vandalized" the White House before leaving? I wouldn't put it past George Putz and the neo-convicts to bug the place, vandalize it for real, or worse, an extremist among them plants a bomb. It's unlikely, but I wouldn't put it past them.

And before any racist morons say it (elsewhere, I mean; I'm not inferring there are any on this site), the only reason the White House will be called the Black House is because the misadministration of George Putz has blackened it so. I foresee Obama putting a new shine on the place.

Hooray for Obama and Hooray for WA Gov Christine Gregoire. Boo to that little prick Dino Rossi for refusing to concede when he's down by 8 points with over half the vote counted. That guy is the biggest cry baby in politics.

Seems like I once heard a fellow say; free at last free at last thank god almighty we are free at last.
Or something close to that.
I feel like today is the start of a new adventure. Ever since bush/chenny cabal got itself appointed I have felt that we were on our last legs. Gloom dispare and agony.

When it was clear Obama had won, I breathed a sigh of relief. I was too leery that all the "it's still a very close race" talk was going to be used as justification for another attempt at election theft. So: Whew. At least that didn't happen.

Assuming there won't be a "December Surprise" by the lame ducks to cause another war (by more bombings in Syria or Pakistan), or imposing martial law, etc. etc...

I can't jump up and down and rejoice. We're still in 2 wars. We've destroyed the two countries where that's happening. Much of the world doesn't like us (that may change fastest). And we still have Guantanamo and other, secret, prisons holding people illegally, unethically, and immorally.

We've got to remind our President-Elect that the healing can't truly begin until our Constitution has been reinstated, and the values which it espouses are put into practice regarding the heinous U.S. Policies which have been the "norm" for so long.

It will be far too easy for Congress, especially, to say things like "Let's not dwell in the past," or "It's our job to focus on the future," or "We don't want to play the blame-game." Believe me, you'll hear it from the Republicans who want to sweep the crimes under the rug, and the Democrats who are too worried about looking bad and not being re-elected.

This is our chance, as citizens, to remind all of our elected representatives why they were elected, and that you can't move into a positive future if you're still mired in the mud of the past.

Thanks, C&L, for all the news, links, and opportunities for activism. Enjoy the moment, because it is a great one. And then, let's get back to work!
