This swine flu thing isn't going away

Is worth a pound of cure.

I avoid public places like the plague (no pun). I wash my hands regularly, especially after shopping and handling carts, cash, door handles etc. I rarely use cash (had to at the Farmer's Market today) as it is notoriously filthy (filthy lucre!).

I am very conscious of never rubbing my eyes with my fingers. If I must rub the corner of my eye I use my knuckle.

We keep the house stocked with every conceivable thing that might be needed in the event we get sick. Tons of aspirin (especially suppositories!). Cause if you're vomiting and have a fever it won't help to take aspirin then throw it up, right? We have lots of cans of regular 7-Up (no substitutes). It's great for hydration and actually works pretty well for nausea. Lots of Nyquil/Dayquil, Emetrol, Immodium for diarrhea.

I tried to buy some nice surgical masks. They fit your face well and are soft. So far, no luck.

And let's be aware that the vast majority of the deaths are those who are already compromised by chronic problems such as emphysema, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, quadraplegics, immuno-suppressed patients etc.

As to health workers going to work sick...It's true. And sadly the reason nurses go to work sick is because all their "sick days" are gone and they desperately need the money in their check. I agree it is horrible for sick health care workers to show up for work. It happened to me once when I was in L.A.

The Charge Nurse on days had a NASTY cold. She was giving the next shift report in a small, crowded room with several dirty Kleenexes in her hand. She was coughing, sneezing etc. Sure enough, we ALL gradually got sick. Never mind that she was walking in and out of all the rooms all day "making rounds".

And here's another problem! When kids get the flu/colds parents can't miss work to care for them so they take them to school sick! Then the other kids get sick then they make their parents/siblings sick. And there you go.

Another reason we need National Health Care. A simple public health rule would be that if you are communicable (usually a fever indicates you can spread the infection), that you must not go to work. And a worker should have proper benefits so if sick the bills can still be met.

I once had a doctor tell me, "If every object that was covered in bacteria/viruses glowed day-glo orange, none of us would ever want to leave the house!"

And please remember: When you are in a public place and wash your hands take the paper towel with you to open the door to leave then throw it away outside the bathroom. What's the sense in cleaning your hands then handling the filthy door knob? (Newsflash....LOTS of people use the toilet and just walk out...think about it.)

Yes, lots of people do. My wife tells me it's rampant in the women's restroom. Guys...well, that's no news flash.

i go over the top of the waistband. i can get it out without touching it, hence i don't wash.

10 days ago I caught the flu - probably the Swine Flu .. that's what's going around, right?

I live alone at the end of a gravel road deep in a forest. I hadn't seen another human being for over a month.

But two days before I got sick, UPS delivered a package and put it inside my back door. I walked up just as the delivery guy was walking back to his truck. We never got closer than maybe 10 feet from each other.

So .. either I caught it out of the air from him .. or someone else who had handled the package (or packed it) left the virus in or on the package.

Chills and high fever (102+) for about 12 hours, vomiting, then extreme weakness for 4 or 5 days.

I can see how it could kill someone with an already weakened system. It took all the strength out of me.

I was born before 1957, so reportedly my symptoms were milder than younger persons would experience.

that held on for months. Whatever it was, it was awful. I've never slept so much in my life. Thankfully, no vomiting was involved.

.

And since neither of us (nor countless others I presume) got a throat swab tested to determine which virus made us sick .. I am certain the incidence of Swine Flu is grossly under-reported.

Especially here in the States.

how did the ups man even find you

The wait staff of bars and restaurants are the most likely workers to go to work sick because they generally have no sick days or health insurance.

...even in a fast-food restaurant women's restroom, one of the food servers ignored the signs posted right over the washbasin, and walked out and back to her work station. I felt lucky that I'd just ducked into this restaurant to use their bathroom, not to order food...

BTW, for anyone who does this and isn't about to confess here? I have a story for you:

My husband has "stroke syndrome" and mid-stage Alzheimer's -- he's pretty much forgotten what toilet paper is used for, or the wash basin. I have to remember to REGULARLY clean his fingernails, because they get pretty gross. I try not to touch him on the hands unless I've supervised him actually washing up with soap and water, because "you don't know where they've been".

So, remember that, all you non-handwashers -- you're being compared to an Alzheimer's victim. How's that make you feel?

...buh-BYE.

lets be honest here

the point of the bush crime cabal was to wreck the economy in such a way that all social programs would be decimated

it was the final push by the neo cons

they succeeded...there is nothing more to say

It's working in California. Who the fuck were the people behind the Gray Davis recall? My first inclination would be to say, "How's that workin' out for ya?," but the current meltdown was probably part of the plan all along. Reagan and Prop 13 totally fucked the state and then the idiots here were persuaded to vote for another fuckin' incompetent actor. UC and Cal State workers are having an 8% pay cut shoved down their throats while student fees are being increased. Think of the wider consequences of that.

I think you're onto something there Joe!!!

Conservatives have always railed against any social programmes. You know, they love to destroy and rebuild. This time rebuilding will be the "for profit" option only.

You will be FINED if you don't buy it.

That could spread to all corporations.

this is "shock doctrine" in action. this is Darwinian Capitalism. it's the financial elites making it further difficult for us to compete with foreign markets that financial elites have money invested in. LOOK at CHINA. they have infrastructure, never ending supply of "cheap labor", deregulation, few if an at all human/worker rights and NOW CHINA is implementing universal healthCare. they want this country of consumers to be co-dependent on foreign markets. they don't want the return of competing small business. there's no loyality by the financial elites it's all about profit margin and reset for class war.

But not for us. It seems like these Neocons (obviously including Obama) are selling this country down the river with an on-going economic coup d' etat.

I love this! Obama supports "Single Payer" healthcare here in 2003:

http://buelahman.wordpress.com/2009/06/15/oba...

But when he became POTUS "Single Payer" went flying OFF THE TABLE!!! OUT OF THE HOUSE!!! INTO THE ALLEY!!! AND DOWN THE RIVER!!!

But our good ally China and their 1.4 BILLION people get to have universal health care while they go to their factories and make our blue jeans and teevees and sippy cups.

I'm going out to garden so I can think about hummingbirds and praying mantis cocoons and try to get my mind off all this shit.

"the point of the bush crime cabal was to wreck the economy in such a way that all social programs would be decimated"

True, but isn't it funny though the Republicans never wreck the economy enough to justify cuts military spending and cutting out tax cuts for the rich.

Sen Baucus and all the other obstructionist representatives of the Health Care ShakeDown Cabal COULD be held accountable by their constituencies next time they face election.

I know - that means glacial change in the makeup of the Senate and the House, but ultimately that's the only way for progress to happen.

Single Payer is the only meaningful Health Care Reform - and that is only a beginning.

...I'm selling your diapered ass for moosemeat!!

It seems to me that all Dave Letterman has to do with Sarah Palin is do a dramatic (tongue in cheek style) representation of Palin's " wild ride" account of Trygg's birth. It reads like a farce and has the anodyne quality of having been composed by Palin herself. If truth can be stranger than fiction, then lets see who believes what after they get a taste of Palin's version.

Can be proud of:

I am beginning to wonder about the "brilliance" of the SCOTUS. Thank God Stevens made a cogent dissenting argument in the above matter.

To think that this inmate is in ALASKA and they won't allow him to use DNA to try to exonerate himself and now the Supremes have agreed with ALASKA!!!

The Innocence Project has saved the lives of almost 250 inmates with DNA testing.

Sarah Palin and the Alaska legislature are borderline criminals for this IMHO.

Which begs the question: What does this decision say about the Supreme Court???

I'd have my DNA analyzed and publicized EVERYWHERE. His attorney could certainly collect something that could be analyzed -- a handkerchief with spit or fingernail cuttings or hair? Then sue the shit out of them when he IS exonerated.

Roberts and Alito are two of the wimpiest biggest mistakes American legislators have ever made. Leave it up to the legislature to give inmates the right to defend themselves against violent crimes with irrefutable evidence that proves or disproves the inmate's defense? And what are we to think if we suspect it's a racist position by the Supreme Court? What if the defendant were Ted Stevens or Todd Palin? Think the ruling would have been the same?

I don't.

Here ya go....NOW the Mission is Accomplished! Where's Bush/Cheney when we need them??!:

If you want to save universal health care, you must do several things, and soon:

1. Go to the nation. You must build public support by forcefully making the case for universal health care everywhere around the country. The latest Wall Street Journal/NBC poll shows that three out of four Americans want universal health care. But the vast majority don't know what's happening on the Hill, don't know how much money the medical-industrial lobbies are spending to defeat it, and have no idea how much demagoguery they're about to be exposed to. You must tell them. And don't be reluctant to take on those vested interests directly. Name names. They've decided to fight you. You must fight them.

2. Be LBJ. So far, Lyndon Johnson has been the only president to defeat American Medical Association and the rest of the medical-industrial complex. He got Medicare and Medicaid enacted despite their cries of "socialized medicine" because he knocked heads on the Hill. He told Congress exactly what he wanted, cajoled and threatened those who resisted, and counted noses every hour until he had the votes he needed. When you're not on the road, you need to be twisting congressional arms and drawing a line in the sand. Be tough.

3. Forget the Republicans. Forget bipartisanship. Universal health care can pass with 51 votes. You can get 51 votes if you give up on trying to persuade a handful of Republicans to cross over. Eight year ago George W. Bush passed his huge tax cut, mostly for the wealthy, by wrapping it in an all-or-nothing reconciliation measure and daring Democrats to vote against it. You should do the same with health care.

4. Insist on a real public option. It's the lynchpin of universal health care. Don't accept Kent Conrad's ersatz public option masquerading as a "healthcare cooperative." Cooperatives won't have the authority, scale, or leverage to negotiate low prices and keep private insurers honest.

5. Demand that taxes be raised on the wealthy to ensure that all Americans get affordable health care. At the rate healthcare costs are rising, not even a real public option will hold down costs enough to make health care affordable to most American families in years to come. So you'll need to tax the wealthy. Don't back down on your original proposal to limit their deductions. And support a cap on how much employee-provided health care can be provided tax free. (Yes, you opposed this during your campaign. But you have no choice but to reverse yourself on this.) These are the only two big pots of money.

6. Put everything else on hold. As important as they are, your other agenda items -- financial reform, home mortgage mitigation, cap-and-trade legislation -- pale in significance relative to universal health care. By pushing everything at once, you take the public's mind off the biggest goal, diffuse your energies, blur your public message, and fuel the demagogues who say you're trying to take over the private sector.

You have to win this.

Your obedient servant, RBR

Lou Dobbs uses the language of the republicans yet he calls himself independent. That's hypocrisy, and it's wrong.

So does Bill O'Liely.

it hypocrisy and wrong? Could it be that some of the independents stand for what the repubs say they are for? I keep hoping for a mainstream acceptable repub candidate that is really for smaller gov. and less intrusion into public lives. I was rooting for Ron Paul but he wasn't a true repub.

announcing to the world that your daughter is a slut who doesnt know how to use a condom and likes fucking the son's of hillbilly heroin dealers, then parading her and her soon to be ex around at the rnc

or making a joke about the fact that the daughter is a slut, and mommy cant do anything about it?

i fucking rest my case

Just what David Letterman needs.

Another psycho female stalker.

The Nixon-led FBI was more concerned with Deep Throat the porno
than Deep Throat, the whistle-blower. Obama flip-flops on torture data. A judge is planning to go into Cheney's role in Plamegate. SCOTUS hates people appealing old cases for DNA tests and people laid off from work for being old. One billion peeps around the world are hungry. The party representing the white males' club forces Sotomayor to quit her woman's club.

Jilted husband forced Ensign's hand.....

The GOP is full of Liars and Hypocrites. Why anyone would listen to these guys is beyond me. But, some Americans cannot ever learn the golden rule, "Do not trust GOP propaganda or talking points!" The GOP will take you down that dark alley and take your life or money every time.

the westboro baptist crew were in los angeles this week

basically trying to goad people into beating the shite out of them, so that they can sue and keep funding their idiocy

Letterman should have never apologized to that witch. Did Palin apologize to the little Obama girls for saying their dad paled around with terrorists? Did Rush and McCain apologize to Hilary for the jokes they made about Chelsea being ugly who was 12 years old at the time? And perhaps more importantly, have the Republicans, George Bush and Dick Cheney apologized to American people for wrecking the country, killing 4600 of it's soldiers in a failed war based on lies? Have they apologized to the families of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis whose family members men, women and children they have maimed and killed? How about Valerie Plame? They have yet to apologize to Joe Wilson for outing his wife and to the American people for making the country less safe by outing a CIA who was working to uncover the real WMD's.

But an off color joke involving one of Sarah Palin's kids someone should apologize? IOKIYAR. F*ck Sarah Palin and the GOP.

Imagine what we would be hearing from McCain/Palin supporters, party boss Limbaugh, hate radio and Fox Noise if the Obamas:

Had a pregnant unwed teenage baby momma daughter

If the unwed teenage baby momma's baby daddy's momma was a drug dealer

Instead of being an America hating white secessionist like Todd, was an America hating Black Panther

If Barack or Michelle went to 5 colleges before finally getting a degree from a school with an accreditation equivalency roughly equal to DeVry.

Had constantly pushed their kids in front of the political limelight during the campaign then whined when a late night talk show host made a joke involving on of them
