I realize this is a little old-news-cycle, but it did amaze me this past month that Sarah Palin went massively ballistic in defense of her daughters re: David Letterman's jokes, but a localized threat like Levi Johnston, who actually had sex with her underage daughter? Not so much. The Obama daughters are more 'off-limits' than you know, Governor. Ask their grandmother.
Open thread below.

these threads have seemed a little lonely lately. where's orangutan? where's tyree? where's liberalNmoderation? how did his brewski turn out?
what's andy k. rothschild up to these days? ;o)
frog's hat tip
I miss them too, bauer. It does seem kinda lonely around here.
I wonder where they went ... they're all probably over at libNmod's place checking out his home-brew.
And they didn't invite us! For shame!
;)
Those posters made this place better and more lively. I just hope they weren't turned away by being "punished" too many times.
horrors- their ass-lips all a gaga in loose deference to whatever (attention-grabbing) dicked journalist might heed 'His' call "in Death". - Where is thy sting? Well- in yur asshole, MJ along with all the oxicontyn and demoral, etc..... Truly - ALL FUCKIN COSMIC JOKE!!!

So he says over at Reddit. If you noticed we had sort of a new management team airlifted in to C&L last November. And the numbers of true independent voice posters dropped significantly. We are supposed to be onmessage now.
I think I saw him post something on Friday.
Ya know, there are a lot of us who don't have regular schedules, so we may be on at a certain time for weeks or months and then *wham* gotta be in bed before the LNMC or Open threads open.
And, personally, if I've seen someone make a comment that states what I was going to, I don't chime in. I'm not a big fan of echo chambers. I'm sure I'm not the only one who reads more comments w/which s/he than s/he posts.
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust.
is not someone to be entirely taken 'at his word'. Please review him, and know that his comments (tho left/liberal leaning) are intented to make one 'shake one's head' while reviewing them; they are ultimately of a 'constructed' nature- construed as to gain sympathy with his diatribes. Take (and absorb his comments) with an utmost grain of salt....

Ybs is one of my favourite posters. I love playfully irreverant men/people.
far left loon >.<
I always expect the lurkers to rant against anyone who is from the Liberal/Left - because we stand against the criminals they support. The Republican party is completely anti-American so, anybody talking against the left, I cannot take at their word because they are so willing to lie to prove their point.
I'm not saying you lied in your post information.please, but I am saying that if you are a right-winger then I automatically assume that you are full of shit, sorry but it's the right-wing track record for the past 30 plus years.
I would take Ysbaddaden at his/her word long before I listen to someone who tells me I cannot because of the liberal views. It has always been liberals who save this country - after conservatives screw it up. And that has been our history for at least a 3rd of Americas history so far, and I'm sure it will just keep up this way, because Repugs show no sign of ever standing for America or Americans.
i don't blame the jews, i blame the joes
Palin's "defense" of her daughter was more contrived than anything. She's a world-class attention whore with her eyes on the prize.
that you would attribute Ms. sarah's antics to that of some cheap WHORE!!! Have you no Shame?!!
Why not, she's comparing a joke to rape.
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
I'm sure that most prostitutes have more class than Ms. Palin. I couldn't even stand to watch Sarah Palin on TV for fear of getting eye herpes.
The woman's a total skank. I don't see how some people can find her attractive.
Also, have you noticed that most men that find her good looking seem like the kind of fellows you'd see at an drunken Aryan gun lover's convention?
The woman's two steps below trailer trash. You could probably find classier things in a septic tank.
to those women who need to sell their wares for survival.
When I think of brash American woman, Sarah Palin comes right to mind. When I think skank, Sarah Palin comes right to mind. When I think low-life douchebag, Sarah Palin comes to mind. When I think of self-promoting trash, Sarah Palin...
far left loon >.<
Palin means she can use her children any way she wishes politically and you'd better not say a word about it because they're off-limits, you see. She thinks she's in control of national discourse. That's like saying your sex life is off-limits for discussion even if YOU bring it up in the first place.
Sorry, Sarah, but you brought this on yourself AND them -- anything you throw into the political pot ain't off-limits for discussion and criticism. If you didn't want attention paid to them, you shouldn't have put them in the limelight over and over again yourself.
You aren't a very savvy politican, Sarah. The press is certainly interested in a politician's family but they need to dig for the meat rather than you throwing your family into the heap and then swearing they're off-limits. That ain't the way things work.
GREAT vid!

And here is Jon Stewart commenting on Obama's promises of "transparency" once he took over The White House:

you can now work as achmadinijad's spokesperson...or maybe kharmani
ya...the iranian people wouldnt be upset at the massive voter fraud...had to be the cia and israel stirring up things again
bet israel even fixed the elections too
guess what...not every peoples deals with voter fraud the way we do here in america...sitting around like sheep and bitching about stuff on the net
the person responsible for neda's death was the guy who pulled the trigger....a thug working for kharmani
thank you very much
But compare the size of the two countries, one is seven million, the other is one hundred million, thats a fourteen to one ratio.
Meddle is about all they could do, the Iranian gov and clerics are perfectly capable of being total b*stards to their own people, without any outside help.
But if Washington and friends want a civil war to erupt there, that might be possible, the outcome prob would be not what they want tho.
As usual, Jon was spot-on. I loved his line, "Yarmulkes for my GI Joe collection" ... funny stuff!
Alas, Obama's new "transparency" in Washington is becoming more and more opaque. That is disappointing. I'm sorry to say this, but my hopes are fading that things will ever change ...
cnn has no credibility. I'm sure they covered michael jackson better than they have covered US and international events. FuxNoise WannaBees

I don't think Bernie's as connected as Kennie-boy was. Bernie has pissed off a lot of people across the board. Kennie-boy has friends in high places.

oh...and i suggest you look at how successful the "boycott" of israeli products at trader joe's is
epic fucking fail
but keep on trying...you guys may get it right yet
you can start by boycotting that intel chip in your computer....rip that sucker right out
Boycotting their products also means boycotting food-stuffs and clothing they import from Arab countries on friendly terms with them.
Yes, let's boycott BLOODYISRAEL, until it can learn to be a grown up, and not a mid-east bully for the Military/Industrial/Petroleum complex.
so please...toss out your computer and cell phone
That's kind of lame. I'm hope I don't need to explain.

of allied countries, there were articles on this and what might happen if some LEO was called in on a consumer trying it at a store.
Its aimed at corporations trying to play politics, but could be applied to people too.
as we saw exactly what the news media and the american people think what is important to them
sex scandal trumps iran, the economy and global warming
death of a freak trumps all
there is no hope for america
than 10% of the population have that much interest in the news of MJ dying but close to 75% would like to have a public option as far as having a choice in their healthcare insurance. The media will focus on the 10% for several weeks to come. Who still thinks it's a far left media?
its a green media
whatever gets the ratings...they play
healthcare doesnt get ratings
a governor fucking a hot latin does
Healthcare is not on their agenda. They get too many advertising $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ from the healthcare and pharmas.

the news focus says more about the media than it says about the audience. remember that they don't want to tell you anything about the wars or the costs of those wars, in terms of money or humanity.
see the 'corporations own america' series.

Our "Sign It Yourself" TV ad calling out Senate Democrats for being on the verge of opposing a public health insurance option supported by 76% of Americans -- while taking $80 million from health and insurance interests -- has amazing picked up momentum.
Here's an update: The New York Times, National Journal, Huffington Post, CrooksAndLiars, BoingBoing, and many other sites have written about the ad (
links below). Over 8,000 people signed it, and hundreds told their friends to sign up on Twitter. And best of all, thanks to folks like you, we beat our original goal of raising $15,000 to air the ad 100 times in Washington DC.

AlJazeera examines the issue of Evangelical Christianity in the US military in relation to the US Wars in the Muslim world.
Fault Lines - Religion in the military - 25 June 09- Pt1
When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

I think that's valid. The Air Force Academy (at least according to 60 Minutes) has basically become a place where someone has trouble surviving if he/she isn't an evangelical.
Bush clearly saw invading Iraq as a charge from what he thinks of as God.
It's too bad our media isn't as interested in investigating a subject so important as Al Jazeera is. We all know that Americans, in general, don't seem to be too reflective. But then, health care is better in Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE than in the U.S., too. We've become our own Third World country, full of short-sighted and attention-deficit thinkers.

It was in the Air Force that I started practicing Witchcraft.
Every so often some goober like phil gramm tries to take away military Witches rights, like stop their rites on the bases they're located.
Why does anyone practice a religion anywho,
Don't they ever get the hang of it?

We still have spys in prison from the cold war. The President is correct.
The president is NOT "correct". It is a violation of a recent US Supreme Court ruling as well as international and US law to imprison people indefinitely without charging them with crimes and trying them. Only if they are found guilty of crimes, like spying, can they receive LONG sentences, like life imprisonment.
Let the Supreme Court enforce it.
As we know, they cannot.
Folks I know MJ was a great pop star, but we are going into three days of wall to wall media coverage. It's so bad, you can even see the boredom on the faces of the talking heads. Please tell me this is intentional in order to mask the North Korean threat while the government deals with it, the upsurge of violence in Iraq and Afghanistan, and, the lack of converage of Iranian civil unrest.
Thousands are posting RIP, but they are not giving the poor soul much peace.
It is interesting and predictable that the frenzy about the Iranian election - whipping us up to another war - all disappeared when there is the alternative of a story about Michael Jackson.
Suddenly, all the so-called fever about democracy melts away.
The same rags have found a bigger story to sell their papers.
Beware the next time we are being stoked to support a war.
I only get CNN and I had to turn it off: non-stop Jackson. A tribute is fine, not 24 hours. I hardly ever watch it these days anyway; there is NO news there. I often put on Larry King while I cook dinner-- if he has a decent guest (even sometimes if not, but... I'm cooking in the kitchen, not rapt.)
PS I always mute commercials whenever possible (90%), even close my eyes. My small protest.

People on the so-called left are so fucked up with Palin that they cannot even bring themselves to support her on this issue. Letterman made a joke about rape. Palin was right to say so.
Sarah Palin talking points. You didn't see the video, did you? He made some tasteless Palin jokes, but they weren't about the rape of anybody.
If as she views it he was making jokes about her 14 year old daughter, than that would be jokes about statutory rape (unless you're a Catholic priest).
He's being supposedly mistaken that it was Bristol would be beside the point, since ignorance of age wouldn't be a defense in a statutory case.
However rape is a loaded term, and she can't pretend to be too ignorant not to know that
Or can she
?
Diabolus est Deus Inversus
Yeah right. Did you even hear the jokes? Nothing about rape. Palin is a douchebag that wants a camera in her face: poor poor victimized Sarah, and her poor widdle props-for-kids.
far left loon >.<
I would frame the joke as/was about a young girl that liked to spread her legs way to often and got pregnant. It defiantly wasn't about raping girls.
Palin's the one who made the term "Sarah Palin's daughter" a punchline. Live with it.
Let's see how far to the right they go before they fall off of the edge of this flat world.

I'm posting these thoughts again because I'm really pissed at Michelle Bachmann.
I worked on the last census in West Virginia and was treated with suspicion by the mountain folk. I was threatened more than once as were my colleagues. Bachmann's words could very well place in danger the workers who must go door-to-door. Even for Michelle this is a new low in responsibility.
Maybe sarah did a Lot with her daughters to get political support.

Fifteen states have depleted their unemployment insurance funds so far, forcing them to borrow from the U.S. Treasury.
A record 30 of the country's 50 states are expected to have to borrow up to $17 billion by next year, said Rick McHugh of the National Employment Law Project, a nonpartisan advocacy group.
"We are setting the stage for big pressures for states to restrict eligibility and benefit levels," McHugh said. "Those type of restrictive actions undercut the (Depression-era program's) economic and social stability purposes."

The Obama administration announced in the statement it would disregard provisions of the legislation that, among other things, would compel the Obama administration to pressure the World Bank to strengthen labor and environmental standards and require the Treasury department to report to Congress on the activities of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF).
http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/St...
According to the American Bar Association (ABA) recently publishing a report declaring that these instruments are “contrary to the rule of law and our constitutional separation of powers” when they “claim the authority or state the intention to disregard or decline to enforce all or part of a law ... or to interpret such a law in a
manner inconsistent with the clear intent of Congress.”
Obama committed the US to $100 billion in aid to the IMF, part of the $1.1 trillion stimulus package agreed to by G20 leaders. The funds will be devoted to poorer nations, many in Eastern Europe, and the market rallied on the announcement.
So, Obama is essentially removing conditions that are necessary given the track record of the IMF and World Bank. The IMF is well known for demanding the exact opposite from its loan recipients: deep budgetary austerity, tax increases, and bans on subsidies. That means that unless there are clear conditions attached to the new IMF money, the extra trillion dollars could actually lead to deep economic contractions, with the new money just going to useless financial sector bailouts in countries around the world, rather than into real economy investments. It's also worth noting that some of the money is going to the World Bank so it's an opportunity to make demands that the World Bank invest in green energy and infrastructure, as opposed to dirty energy, a bad habit of the bank.
