For the life of me, I can't figure out why someone who is so anti-progressive would want to post on a progressive blog. My best guess would be that on a wingnut site, the Moose would be just another mindless talking point amongst a sea of mindless talking points (or dittoheads, if you please) with nothing really interesting to say anyway. Or it could be that even on the right-wing sites they can't stand the sorry bastard as much as we can't stand him here.
I've never felt any real commitment to Universal Healthcare or single payer from democrats or even so called progressives. I remember a few months ago when the "public option" came into fashion as a meme to shut up real progressives, it smelled fishy and now after reading these articles you can see why.
Politics is for the present, but an equation is for eternity. Albert Einstein
is spending 1.4 million a day in advertising to fight healthcare reform. Do you even realize what an uphill battle the progressives have? Whatever we end up with will be better than what is offered now.
we had John Wayne to look up to. Now all we have is Gordon Liddy, Ollie North and the crew at Fox news. Believe me, it's a fight but we're outnumbered by the big bucks in the corporate media and the rest of the moneyed interests. We are not quitters though and we all don't come from Alaska.
If we can stop moderates, centrists, and corporate dems from controlling the language with crafty memes then maybe we have a fighting chance. Language matters and too many progressives have let the monied interests dominate with the clever term "public option".
Politics is for the present, but an equation is for eternity. Albert Einstein

Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) has issued a call for a criminal probe in the wake of a major New York Times story by James Risen with new evidence that the Bush Administration impeded at least three federal investigations into alleged war crimes in Afghanistan in 2002.
I remember reading about Dostum back in the early days of the Afghan war. Back then he was described as the freedom-fighter leader of the Northern Alliance and a valued ally to the U.S. in it'd efforts to topple the Taliban. Now it comes to light he was just another thug on the CIA's payroll and a mass killer to boot.
This sounds so familiar. Saddam Hussein had a similar resume. We're going to be hearing more of General Dostum in the future, I'm sure.
That's pretty bad considering he's not a newscaster, but good for him. It's kind of like choosing Madonna (or insert your own singer here) as the best Washington politician.

In a low blow to Colbert – never mind all those real newscasters out there – Jon Stewart has been selected as America's Most Trusted Newscaster, by a wide margin yet, in an online poll by Time. Matched against Brian Williams, Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson, Stewart got 44% of the vote; his closest competitor was Williams with 29%. Facts owe: Stewart is braver, truthier, more hard-hitting than the rest. And, the best, we can laugh while we cry.

If the 'free market is better' why so afraid? Real Competition Can Stop Health Insurance Gouging: by Jim Hightower
- http://www.creators.com/opinion/jim-hightower...
Sen. Richard Shelby of Alabama is all for the congressional effort to produce health-care reform — as long as the legislation we end up with doesn't contain any actual reform. Indeed, the senator gets fainting spells at the mere mention of Barack Obama's proposed reforms, gasping that they add up to socialized health care.
He recently stammered that the president's plan would destroy "the best health care system the world has ever known." Huh? This guy puts the "dumb" in dumbfounding. Maybe by "finest" he meant the most expensive, for it surely is that. But the best? Hardly. The quality of our care ranks 37th in the world — only one notch better than Slovenia!
-- But perhaps it's not Shelby's fault that he's so out of touch with the unpleasant reality that most Americans face when they're sick and have to cope with the costly, bureaucratic, uncaring system now run by a handful of insurance corporations. After all, he's been in Congress for 30 years, so he and his family have long been receiving platinum-level coverage courtesy of us taxpayers.
Maybe he assumes everyone gets the same. You see, since Shelby already gets excellent socialized health care, of course he thinks it's the finest. -- Obama's proposed reform is not so bold as to offer you and me the same sweet deal that our congress-critters get, but it does include one provision to help us escape the untender mercies of insurance profiteers.
Called the "public option," it creates a publicly run insurance plan as an alternative to the costly, mingy, inscrutable policies shoved at us by the big, monopolistic insurers.
US car manufacturers plough a lonely furrow on biofuels - http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/georgem...
In 2008 the expansion of biofuel production was directly responsible for the decline in global food stocks, which caused grain prices to rise, catalysing famines in many parts of the world. Cereal stockpiles declined by 53m tonnes; the production of biofuels, mostly by the US, consumed almost 100m tonnes, according to a piece in the Economist on 6th December 2007.
As the UN's special rapporteur, Jean Ziegler says, turning food for people into food for cars is, "a crime against humanity". It's also a crime against the environment. In almost all cases, biofuels made from grain or oil crops create more greenhouse emissions than petroleum.
The only options for this type are cellulosic & algae....
Chapter 1 of Howard Dean's Prescription for Real Healthcare Reform: Read It Now - http://www.chelseagreen.com/content/chapter-1...
The Ultimate Hurdle: Profit versus Care The problem with private health insurance, particularly in the individual market, is not just that it is inadequate; it also stems from companies having to report quarterly profits that must increase every year to satisfy Wall Street. In order to do so, they often have to cut health benefits.
Private, for-profit insurance companies must meet two obligations that are often mutually exclusive: 1. Their fiduciary responsibility to their shareholders to maximize profits. 2. Their responsibility to their customers to give good service.
Increasingly, the former is maintained at the expense of the latter. No wonder health insurers fear a public health insurance entity run by the government, which doesn’t need to show a profit every year and whose efficiency is three times greater than that of the best private competitor.
