So, it's extremely difficult to be civil in this matter. Yet, wingnuts have no problem with being over the top hateful when people like Ted Kennedy or Walter Cronkite pass. I'm not saying liberals are better, clearly after reading stuff on TMZ, they are not, but Rush, when his time comes, does not deserve any praise or good thoughts unless his outlook changes. I highly recommend Michael Ruhlman's book, Ratio, which teaches the basic ratios behind a number of recipes - the theory being that once you know the ratio, you don't know one recipe, you know a thousand.
There's a cookie recipe that turns out a nice shortbread-style cookie without a lot of hassle, and the addition of a single egg white to the recipe produces a simple butter cookie.
The book helps you understand the role of each ingredient - adding more sugar to the cookie recipe produces a crisper cookie, for example.
Back when I started out, I
readstudied all the "how to" pages in "The Joy of Cooking". I think there are a few hundred: what ingredients do, how to use them, herbs and spices, cooking methods, what cooking instructions mean, etc. It has been invaluable over the years; understanding food and blending and heating it. An amazing story about a guy from Las Vegas who was essentially a con men and told the Bush morons that he had some magic software that could read hidden messages in Al Jazeera TV signals indicating future attacks. His intelligence was used to raise the terror alert level to Orange (second highest) and to cancel various flights. Just from the short description in this article its obvious (both from a computer software standpoint and an intelligence view) that he was a huckster yet he got millions from the Bush admin and helped amp up the be afraid index.

The Human Genome is not as big as we had hoped - smaller than for some plants and animals.
It's the gene switches that make us different from other animals and yes, plants. We really have not come very far from the slime that was our ancestors in terms of basic genes. It turns out we (life on earth) are still basically that same slime, but we are a slime that is now able to take on any form that suits the environment by switching DNA strings off and on. That's why it takes just a few generations for a group of creatures (including humans) to adapt to a new environment.
We are not just ugly bags of water, but we are part of a single fabric of life, that has the power to morph into anything it needs to in order to get by, and do so pretty efficiently through the turning on or off of a number of control genes. that's why we can be 99% genetically identical to chimps and yet be so very different - same genes with different ones switched on or off. (same machine with custom 'settings').
