I live in Savannah & received on Friday morning a robocall from The US Chamber of Commerce, stumping for Saxby Chambliss, saying he'll lower taxes & correct the economy. The US Chamber of Commerce was specified both at the very beginning of the ad & at the end, indicating they were the ones paying for the call.
Is that legal? The US Chamber of Commerce stumping for senators? And paying to endorse them?
With what went on today with a Wal-Mart worker getting stampeded on to death, and other aggressive shopping, I'm glad I didn't take any part in that. Not to mention that I am not so fond of crowds.
It's nice to sleep in and hardly have any pity for those materialistic shopping people who practice a holiday that is really just paganism, where the definition of it is so unfounded.
Too bad people don't look into the better things of life than what can be bought from a store. The intangible things are usually a lot better than those that are tangible.
A free market, which is not a fair or good market, has resulted in Christmas being nothing more than materialistic and paganism.
With so much we are buying and borrowing from China, the worst case scenario in a few years, the USA will become "New China" or the "United States of China" as the Chinese buy our country out. Maybe that would've happened more likely if McCain was the president-elect.
I sure hope that Obama will encourage Americans to be less materialistic and be more content with what they have and what they can do.
Yeah retailers need to extend such deals over a week or something so people stop this be there before the store opens bull shit panic. I'm not so sure I agree C&L's position to support the 'Buy Nothing Day' either.
Considering sales are kind of important to our economy (especially now) it seems to me there are more responsible ways of putting a spot light on the ludicrous nature of black Friday. Such as putting the Walmart fiasco at the front of the news (such as C&L is doing a few posts earlier) or the shooting at Toy R Us today, then using that to make a call to end it. Perhaps writing our political representatives using such examples.
If the executives at Wal-Mart had a f'ing brain they would have had that poor man who was trampled outside in a warm jacket with a scarf and hat putting wrist bands on people with numbers. Then there would have been no reason to stampede through the door.
Same goes when there's a crowd to buy Springsteen tickets etc.
Wal-Mart could have made the shopping experience a fun, festive event by giving out the wrist bands, having workers outside with hot chocolate, cider and doughnuts, maybe had little freebies for the kids so things would be orderly.
It will be interesting to see how Wal-Mart handles the funeral of this man and how they treat his surviving family.
As for me, I got my hair done, came home, ate left over vegetarian goodies (I have a great Pumpkin Cheesecake recipe with brandy if anyone wants it BTW) and I watched "Captain Blood" with Errol Flynn for the tenth time.
There ain't nothing wrong with Paganism; that's just Christian propaganda.
Saturnalia a Roman winter holiday Christmas is based on (like Dies Natalalis Solis Invictus, Jul, and Alban Arthann.) In Saturnalia boys would get balls, girls dolls, and adults exchanged candles to signify the returning light. It actually sounds more civilized than Christmas.
In fact, Christmas used to be a drunken riot; that's why the Puritans tried to ban it. But Prince Albert, who came from Germany brought their customs to England. They were based on German Paganisnm. That was carols, Christmas cards, and decorated trees, much like Yggdrasill. Victorian England turned it into a family occassion and gift giving, which merchants were only too happy to participate in. Then it spread to America. Interesting thing is the traditional greeting in England was Happy Christmas and a Merry New Year, where the drunken riot was transferred to.
So sorry about you republican buddies getting beat. This video is to say dont buy anything on nov 28 and try to change from a heavy hitting consumer into living on what you have instead of constantly upgrading. You may n ot understand but when your grand kids have to pay more for water than oil they will.
It was realblack for the Wal Mart employee and his family who opened the doors and got trampeled to death. Buy your gas but don't kill anybody doing it.
So I shouldn't buy gas today and wait until tomorrow?
C'mon people! Just think about what you buy and whether it is hurting the environment or another being. Does it matter whether you need it or not? It's all relative and if everyone stopped buying things, there would be heck of a lot of good, responsible folks without a job or source of income.
With this mentality, I shouldn't donate to C&L because I don't really need it. Think about it...
Now you are talking as an intelligent person yes that would be needful. So would be fuel if you were called out to work a hundred miles away. But I think the video meant you really didnt need to update your blackberry today or buy music or other goods that could wait til tommorrow and I am not put out about anything. i am just saying I didnt need anything today and I am diabetic.
How may I help you
GOPnotforme: Where are your condoms?
Salesperson: Right over here sir.
GOPnotforme: Doyou have a change room where I can try these on?
I would never sleep with someone I was dating casually. And I never date more than one guy at a time. I cannot imagine sleeping with more than one person during a given timeframe.
The thought creeps me out.
I value my body far too much...condom or not.
It isn't like it was when I was a kiddo. Hell, herpes wasn't even around then (that I knew of). (shudder again)
On a lighter note. I saw two unused and wrapped Magnum condom packs on the ground when I was walking into Ace Hardware tonight. I was cracking up as I crossed their threshold.
If I were young in todays society and I took a lady home and she didnt carry her ownn condoms I wouldnt think of doing it with her. Unless it was uma thurman
But there is stuff you can get WITH condoms (e.g., genital warts). I have little desire to take chances.
I don't have to love someone to sleep with them (I don't love too easily...it has been a very long time since I have loved anyone), but I do have to know that neither of us are or planning to sleep with someone else.
I don't buy into the 3 date rule. I am definitely worth waiting for. And if it's right, then, uhm, balls to my walls! Woot! :-)
(Added: I love a lot of people...I meant IN love, above.)
Unfortunately, I have no need for condoms. Women always seemed to assume I was some kind of intellectual with no interest in sex.
When I was in my teens they seemed to really like my long thick hair; it grew in waves of glossy black except for one white streak. When I was studying scripts in the Arts Magnet Center, the dancers would be brushing my hair admiring it, and I had to pretend I wasn't looking at their breasts, because they didn't wear bras under their leotards. Even in my twenties women would say they were jealous of my hair. Although I had one young lady I was working on at a convention say I would've made a good looking women. Later in my late twenties and early thirties when I was body building they liked to grab my biceps.
I was the one they came to (not with) for advice on their boyfriends, husbands and kids. They liked the fact that I was direct and usually accurate in how I read situations. Unfortunately, all the single women were interested in was in shopping, what kind of car you drove, etc. More and more often when I spoke they didn't seem to understand what I was saying.
Seems decidedly less busy here on the open thread since right after the election. And a few other sites, as well. I'm still not quite over the whole thing yet. Kinda tired, ya know. Hope Minn. and Georgia work out. Sen Al Franken !?!? Heh, heh.
...in my family. Except for my daughter, now aged 22, who when she got married turned both Catholic and Republican. She's a single-issue voter: abortion. She also told me months ago that her computer was broken, probably so that I wouldn't send her email political stuff... miraculously, it got fixed soon after the election. Love her anyway. Plenty to talk about that doesn't include religion or politics. My grandson, for instance...
Two men forget the meaning of X-Mas, and shoot each other to death in a Toys R Us. TIME explains the story behind all the religious tension in India. The U.N. says the economy is hurting AIDS int'l. prevention programs.
"...the two shooters appeared to be in their 20s or 30s. One of them had small children with him.
After the shooting stopped, Turner said he walked out of the stock room and saw a small child near the body of one of the men and heard the child saying, “ Daddy, wake up.”"
Nice, huh? Apparently, their 'wimmin' were pounding on each other, and the menfolk decided the best way to handle an out of control cat fight was to shoot one another. Maybe their female partners were so gawd awful, it was a mutual suicide pact...
The disembodied voice was chilling in its rage. A gunman, holed up in the Oberoi Trident hotel in Mumbai (formerly Bombay), where some 40 people had been taken hostage, told an Indian news channel that the attacks were revenge for the persecution of Muslims in India. "We love this as our country, but when our mothers and sisters were being killed, where was everybody?" he asked via telephone. No answer came. But then he probably wasn't expecting one.
It will now get worse and Pakistan is now targeted. Arms dealers are toasting the carnage.
Here's the "Change" we all voted for. More of a blood-bath seeking revenge against OBL who is most likely dead (at least that's what Bhutto said on David Frost's show right before she was assassinated).
Who ever has talked Obama into escalating our presence in Afghanistan militarily is playing him for a huge sucker. The U.S. can only lose there, exactly like the Russians did:
I'd prefer Obama re-think the entire world situation, our available resources, our national human/infrastructure/economic needs THEN see if there's a REALLY good reason to commit our troops to battle anywhere in the world. I kinda thought when I filled in the little bubble next to his name on my absentee ballot that I was voting for a Constitutional law professor who has above-average intelligence....
Guess he didn't get that memo from the C.I.A. on "Blowback".
I also guess he didn't read David Ray Griffin's book on 9/11.
"The War in Afghanistan (1979-1989) has been called "the Soviet Union's Vietnam War," a conflict that pitted Soviet regulars against a relentless, elusive, and ultimately unbeatable Afghan guerrilla force (the mujahideen). The hit-and-run bloodletting across the war's decade tallied more than 25,000 dead Soviet soldiers plus a great many more casualties and further demoralized a USSR on the verge of disintegration."
I guess Obama thinks we have room in D.C. for yet another reflective wall to etch in the names of our dead sons and daughters.
Do all of you agree that sending a "surge" of 20,000 U.S. troops into Afghanistan to fight the nutty Taliban is a good idea when we are on the verge of a fucking Depression?
It's already being blamed on al q-eye-duh. All the boosh years of demonizing a single religion are bearing fruit. it's not ineptitude when all the answers are presented immediately. It's an opportunity to present prepared propaganda.
True. And it plays into the current "we'll catch 'em all in Pakistan one way or another" rhetoric going on in Washington. Great excuse to SURGE in Afghanistan.

Obama may have to deal with that first crisis.
Which crisis? There are many.
India/Pakistan is the 1st.
I live in Savannah & received on Friday morning a robocall from The US Chamber of Commerce, stumping for Saxby Chambliss, saying he'll lower taxes & correct the economy. Is that legal? The US Chamber of Commerce stumping for senators? And paying to endorse them?
What gives?
Everything the GOP does is legal.
Hello, happy holidays, hope u r well. :)
Long time no see. I am well, thank you.
A very happy holiday to you, too!! How was your Thanksgiving?

how does this brainless video advance the progressive cause?
It seems to assume that all purchases are wasteful, which is a laugh-fest.
The video seemed much like a dot matrix printer, and you could barely see what was being typed.
It also looked much like a '90's computer virus --
ah ah ah, you didn't say the magic word!
ah ah ah, you didn't say the magic word!
ah ah ah, you didn't say the magic word!

Sorry, the post should have been one down.
oops
You're good at inventing facts about me. About everything else as well, no doubt.
You're a sad confirmation that the right wing does not have a monopoly on knee-jerk, faith-based thinking.

Exactly what need is so important to you that you just have to buy it now
Condoms.
ecccchhhh
common sense and courtesy, bro.
Like when someone asks what is so needful the answer would be condoms
Another example of an immediate need might be prescription meds or first aid supplies. I was just sayin' Sorry you're put off.

GOPnotforme: Where are your condoms?
Salesperson: Right over here sir.
GOPnotforme: Doyou have a change room where I can try these on?
Brutal! (LOL! Funny, though!)
But does this condom make me look fat?
Its falling off
Just take the teeny weeny size.
In the drug store the clerk is a hottie and I ask her do you sell xtra small condoms I am way to big for those finger thingies
It's just cold.
Just like that movie Must Love Dogs (I think that is the name).
If only I had a reason to HAVE to buy a condom RIGHT NOW! (sigh)
Havent bought a condom in 20 years hopoe my wife is as faithful as she says I am
Condoms are required. At least I think so...it's been so long.
Yuo dont mind aids, hepititus shypliss or gonorhea.
and try not to get too rude. I'm dating, no one exclusively, so they are a part of my life. Common sense and courtesy, as I said before.
And on happy occasions, an urgent need.
I kept a load of extra large magnums and hid the xsmall in the bottom of the drawer. I still have those magnum I fax you a few
I would never sleep with someone I was dating casually. And I never date more than one guy at a time. I cannot imagine sleeping with more than one person during a given timeframe.

Now I just feel like a slut!
Thanks alot.
That's your decision. And mine.
I'd say it's a guy thing, but I know many women who are comfortable doing that.
I guess I should have said it was a personal decision above.
Honestly, I didn't mean to offend!!
Nearly everything I've posted here tonight is said with tongue firmly in cheek and a sense of play. No offense taken from you.
Are you seeing anyone? ;)
Gee...Uhm...well....
See what I mean?
Point made. :-)
If I were young in todays society and I took a lady home and she didnt carry her ownn condoms I wouldnt think of doing it with her. Unless it was uma thurman

Judging by what I see, many people would make a better investment joining a gym than buying new clothes. Just sayin'. And no resources consumed.
I think that was the message of the video you just dont need all the junk they are pushin. I think my parents had the samr tv for 25 years
Does anybody think Bush will invade iran on the way out the door
There aren't any military leaders that are going to listen to him now.
ya think?
Has Xoites been around lately?
A couple days ago.
I saw him earlier today or yesterday.
Seems decidedly less busy here on the open thread since right after the election. And a few other sites, as well. I'm still not quite over the whole thing yet. Kinda tired, ya know. Hope Minn. and Georgia work out. Sen Al Franken !?!? Heh, heh.
I hear so many dems dissing him. I don't understand why.
I think it's past time we put a professional comedian in government. The amateurs have done a piss poor job.
I've given his books to my right-wing dad as gifts.
But only because they're both from Minn.
of his books? Did they read any?
Mom's in that big bookstore in the sky (across from the Starbuck's) but with her having been a DFLer, I'm sure she would have loved them.
Dad, on the other hand, gets nearly apoplectic over Al and his "shifty" ways.
We lost him when Ike ran against Adlai. :(
that Susan Eisenhower was an Obama supporter and spoke in Denver?
The E-mail exchanges in the run-up to the election have become the stuff of family legend.
I wanted to be in Omaha (Obamaha!) with my huge clan yesterday just to see the family dynamics, post 11/4.
My baby sister should call tomorrow with the latest dish. I can't wait.
and we expect a full report! :-)
I think I would pass on a family get together with right wingers. I can hold my tongue...but only for so long.
...in my family. Except for my daughter, now aged 22, who when she got married turned both Catholic and Republican. She's a single-issue voter: abortion. Maybe the Dems don't like him cause he'll stand up and call them on their shit right on C-SPAN just like Paul Wellstone did.
