I finally took some photos of that unidentifiable tree. The other day I was checking out the "flowers" and noticed little puffs of smoke rising above them. I checked other parts of the tree and lo and behold, the tree (I presume from the flowers) puffs litte smoke clouds, even blue and all (I assume they're pollen). Anyhow, I've never seen that before and it's all over the tree.

Pretty bizzare.

miss_kitty's picture

Little puffs of blue smoke all over the tree. It's pretty incredible.

miss_kitty's picture

but I can't find it you thought it was a fruit tree and now I remember a tropical?

Rich H's picture

my father in law was visiting from China and planted a few seeds in the yard. This is the only one that took. It's about 6 years old and maybe 18ft. tall.

I loaded some photo's in flickr but have never used it before so I'm not quite sure what to do with them.

Bainbridge22's picture

In 35 years when that tree takes over your region and wipes out all the indigenous trees...LOL, just kidding.

Rich H's picture

As far as what little research I've done shows most asian trees share commonality with european. If so, I would think it's probably already here.

However, until we can identify it there's no way to know.

fastfeat's picture

Leaves? Flowers?

Sometimes I can get these, but a pic is worth a thousand guesses...

"Parachutes are allowed in checked or carry-on baggage, but may not be worn in flight."

Rich H's picture

Not the flowers or tree - seriously, smoke or polen.

well, I read all that was on flickr this morning and while this doesn't seem right, here goes.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/stinkyjunior/sets/

I'll have to see if I can get my old video camera working - it's been in the closet forever too (then you'll be able to see the smoke/pollen rising). BTW stinky junior is one of my cats.

fastfeat's picture

Your "fruit" tree is a white mulberry, Morus alba. Native to Asia, used as food source for silkworms. Very fast, hardy, easy to grow, drought tolerant, dense shade provider. If it does produce fruit (some are fruitless, but this looks likely to set), they are typically like whitish raspberries. Usually sweet, good in preserves, etc.

The tree will eventually overwhelm small lots w/o judicious pruning. Roots will lift pavement, get in water, sewer, septic lines if too close. Pollen causes bad allergies for some people; new plantings are banned in some desert cities (Vegas maybe one) because of pollen issues.

in excess of half the speed of sound, which makes it the fastest known movement in the plant kingdom...That's why it looks like smoke.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morus_alba

These internets are so cool...

Rich H's picture

I'm glad I know what it is. I've had to prune it about twice a year, it does grow fast.

Now, I wonder, if it's so evasive, what I should do?

miss_kitty's picture

Make sure your pruning cuts are thinning cuts, not heading cuts.

Find out the proper way to make pruning cuts. Alex Shigo is considered the word on pruning, having spent decades conducting scientific research on the effects of proper and improper pruning.

Don't injure the root zone or the trunk. That can cause the tree defenses to kick in and start suckering.

Fast growing trees are notoriously weak wooded. Keep the tree branches light, so the weight does not break branches.

Don't fertilise with nitrogen rich fertiliser.

Don't use weed and feed on your lawn.

It might be worth your while to hire an ASA or ISA certified Arborist. You can find listings on the internet for your area. Spending a couple hundred bucks on getting good care for your tree can make it an asset that adds thousands to the value of your property; not doing so can turn it into a liability that will cost you to remove.

An good arborist will talk to you and explain how your tree should be cared for.

Rich H's picture

I don't have the funds to hire someone so I'll look up Alex Shigo and hopefully get some tips. Ideally, if my yard were large enough, I'd plant a little forest.

Which reminds me of when I was a kid and used to mow the lawns of several people, there was one older woman who's husband had planted a maze of hedgerows in the back yard, canopied by large overhead branches of other tree's he had planted.
You'd follow the maze and at the end of one of the ends(?) there would be a birdbath or a statue and the trees where trimmed so stategic rays of sunshine would hit in certain places.

It was really beautiful. I've always wanted to do that.

miss_kitty's picture

Ideally one of those (the back one) should have been eliminated about 5-6 years ago.

Definitely find out the correct angle to cut and take off that low branch on the back trunk; it will cause the back truck to increase in size...

Save your pennies. You could have a problem with that double stem.

And I would love to have a garden myself. The ahole that manages the building fucked me over. I've been here 25 years, have loads of experience, he just moved a year and a half ago, no experience in landscape, pretended to be a friend stabbed me in the back (a long ugly story) and took the gardens off of me here. He'll pay. I'm going Hamsher on him. He's earned it several times over. He thinks any old asshole (like him) can do a complex landscape ("Hey! If she can do it...). Thing is, I've worked with him. He will fail badly.

I get the picture. I just read up on some of what Alex Shigo suggests and think I should wait a little longer to prune. I also looked up the properties of mulberries and think this tree should just be taken care of (that's a relief). Maybe I can make some mulberry wine. Hey, it's good for the blood.

fastfeat's picture

Did you link any pics yet?

And he said silk floss tree (so I'm wrong again).

miss_kitty's picture

:)

fastfeat's picture

(for me, anyway). Common names are so, well, local. And a plant only has one correct Latin(ized) name (though there may be synonyms). Anyway, I can rattle those off all night long--women love it at parties...

Good call miss_k on Cotinus, though that's one specific epithet I'd have had to verify. Been a few years since I've had to spell it. Double 'g' is pretty uncommon--can only think of Quercus kelloggii at the moment.

“I couldn’t disagree more. I take pride in the fact that lesbians and gays have served openly and with distinction in the Dutch military forces for decades, including in leading operational positions, such as in Afghanistan at the moment. The military mission of Dutch UN soldiers at Srebrenica has been exhaustively studied and evaluated, nationally and internationally. My second childhood home was again my parents and I, but my mother's father and his girlfriend and her sister living in the house directly across the street. No, he wasn't rude to me, but the idiot decided he was going to make a customer service phone call to AT&T on his cell while we were waiting at the K-mart bus stop. First thing is, that was already a huge mistake, the bus stop faces the county line and it's very hard to hear on a cell phone with all the racket from semi-trucks and cars whissing by.

The poor woman that had the misfortune of answering his call had to put up with him for several minutes... She wasn't solving his problem as fast as he wanted and it didn't even take long for him to yell at her like she had insulted his mother, when really all she did was get one number of his zip code wrong.

I felt so bad for her, since he had it on speaker and I could hear everything. She sounded East Indian and I hope that asshole didn't take her accent as a license to be rude and impatient with her. He bitched and bitched some more, and he told her than in the time it was taking her, he could just get on the bus and go to the AT&T store and ask his question there. I'm thinking about itemizing stuff (basically a year's worth of expenses--meals, office supplies) that my employer didn't pick up (Actually, I just didn't submit them, in an effort to help the company out). I have all the receipts, no problem, averaging maybe $200/week.

What I need to generally know is

a) What % of these can be deducted (general guidelines)
b) How much ($ total) would be needed to make itemizing wothwhile.
c) Any simple/quick references for doing this shit.

I'm single, W2 employee, no kids, no interest income, grossed about $47K last year. Doing the 1040 EZ, I'd be due a $440 refund. Not bad, but if I can stretch a couple hundred more out of it by itemizing, well...

Liberty Tax wanted $150 to "confirm" my 1040EZ, plus another $100+ to get the "rapid refund". Fuck them!!

Any advice will be appreciated....

website. Look up itemized deductions, and find the amount you have to beat in order to itemize. If you cannot beat it with out-of-pocket medical expenses and other allowable expenses, you must take the standard deduction. Do you own real property and if so, did you pay a mortgage? Did you pay property taxes? What was the total of your work-related unreimbursed expenses? If you are not sure what those would be, the website will inform you. I'm going to go look at the itemized minimum right now.

fastfeat's picture

I don't own squat. No kids, wife, etc.

I just opened the 1040 form online--175pp!

But thanks for a starting place.

"Parachutes are allowed in checked or carry-on baggage, but may not be worn in flight."

---Southwest Airlines

the majority of your potential deductions are work related. Is that right? You only need four or five of the pages, and you can bookmark the instructions and read them. Use the table of contents in the beginning of the instruction booklet. I didn't mean to freak you out. It won't be that hard. You do not need hardly anything from the 175 pages. Promise.

Floridafish's picture

I'm not sure you can itemize like that on an EZ form. I seem to remember there being a place for tips or other claimed income but I'm not sure about anything else. You may have to file a long form. 1040A I think. Your post office should have a tax handbook for your state or you could google it.

out of pocket for expense you have to have an accountant do your deductions for you. For everydollar you spent it comes off your gross income and shouldn't be taxed. I believe it's a 1099 you need to take those deductions and it should increase your return substantially. Good luck. I'm not the expert though.

paid you as a subcontractor. I thought you said you did not turn in the expenses you want to deduct, if possible. Did I misunderstand? And, were you a subcontractor or a salaried/hourly employee? Did you get a W-2?

ron's picture

your addressing fastfeat but I did use 1099 for my last employer but I arranged for him not to take any deductions from my pay. I think I got both W-2 and 1099 so it made it easier for me to claim all of my deductions. I was strictly on commission.

fastfeat's picture

They normally paid my expenses (I turned in receipts weekly before), but times got tight, I got behind in submitting them, but I figured I could still take the deduction (in lieu of my employer payer paying me directly). Maybe I can't w/o being a 1099 employee then.

You are single, so look on the 1040 for your standard deduction and you must beat that with your total expenses, which so far n your case are work related expenses that were not reimbursed by your employer and any medical expenses you paid, including the cost of your health insurance if you paid it. I am going back to see what the standard deduction for a single person is this year. Back in a minute.

See below. Got about $10K in receipts.

I've got to run for awhile.

Thanks all for the help. Will check back later tonight.

Goodnight.

Ron, and everyone else. I've got a good idea where to start and what to do. My receipts are completely unorganized (in ziplocs, Fedex folders, etc), but they're all there. Just got to get to LA and get them out of storage and sort.

Since I've never done it this way before, I guess I should expect an audit next year too? No big deal, I suppose.

Many employers love this as you are responsible for all of your taxes. Did you have a base pay and also commissions? Is that why you got both a W-2 and a 1099?

No,

commission only but I may not have gotten the W-2. Retired and on SS so I can't remember.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040sa.pdf Print it out an work it out. On the main IRS page, click on Forms and Publications. You want Form 1040, as you know, and the appropriate schedules, which is probably just the schedule A. Start there.

spent several hundred dollars or thousands out of pocket, you don't want to go easy.

Standard deduction for me is $9350, so I figure thats (roughly) $700 or so to work with, maybe...

related expenses (unreimbursed) are more then your standard deduction you can deduct them. How about health insurance?

cell phones, note paper and other things you bought that were job related. They all add up. Your computer and internet access also.

Motel 6, food, etc.

I used to be pretty organized, but once I got behind, shit just snowballed. But I threw away nothing, kinda like a receipt hoarder...

I'm in Portland, OR and they have several locations. It's first come, first served, so you have to wait a while, but once it's your turn, they are quick and efficient...they have a special tax program, and they do it for FREE. The tax preparers are trained by the IRS, so they know what they're doing. They have a supervisor double check it and send it electronically while you're sitting there, and give you hard copies. Also, the IRS has a free electronic filing online, if you want to check that out. Good luck!

I'm not quite old enough to be an AARP member yet, but there may be similar local groups as well. (My late father had this shit down pat, as he did it every April 14. I made sure to be gone tax day/weekend; I should've stuck it out once...)

for AARP....it's open to everyone, regardless of age or membership. They just sponsor it. The only problem is that it will take a little of your time because you have to wait your turn. But otherwise, it's perfect.
