I love this country. I have lived in several other countries during my life and there is something so vibrant and reckless (in the best sense of the word) and diverse about living in the US that I make and continue to make a conscious choice to remain here and raise my kids as Americans.

But as ferociously as I love my children, I can still recognize when they are screwing up or not living up to their potential. And I speak up then too. Because I love them.

And when we screw up in this country or we don't live up to our potential, I speak up as well. Because I love this country.

The economy is in the crapper and is getting worse. Yes, I know it started at the end of the Bush administration but it has been a year of getting worse after a trillion dollar Keynesian stimulus. My college prof was a keynesian. I hold Milton Friedman in higher regards.

The oil spill in the gulf was no more Obamas fault than Katrina was Bush's but Bush suspended the Jones act in 3 not 70 days.

We are no longer respected world wide. That gets young men killed on both sides. Who was it that said it is better to be respected than liked?

With that being said, you guys like Obama.

My feelings towards Iraq and Afganistan are we shouldn't be there. Do not mistake me for a pacifist. I think we needed to kill Saddam and his sons. Grab a general. Put him in charge with the caveat of hold elections in 6 months and don't make us come back to blow you up again. Same thing in Afganistan.

'We, the People'............rimshot................hahahahahaha!

Nicole Belle's picture

The economy is bad, but it's actually getting better. Unemployment--while still too high--is starting to show improvement. I really don't understand this almost ADHD fantasy that everything would improve over night. It's taken 30 years of Reaganomics to get us in this situation, it's going to take time to pull us out again.

And I WISH that we were doing a strict Keynesian stimulus, but we didn't. Almost half of the stimulus took the form of tax cuts which do not stimulate. So blaming Keynesian ignores that Friedman's sneaky head keeps popping up.

As to world wide respect, I hate to break this to you, but that happened during Bush. I had to go to a writer's conference in the Netherlands in 2004. People actually wanted to know if I was a "good" American, meaning they didn't trust me if I supported Bush.

I agree wholeheartedly on Iraq. I do think we need to be gone. But I don't think it was our place to decide whether Saddam stayed or not.

Ohio Nads Patriot's picture

Respected not liked. The banking bubble said was caused by money being lent to people unable to pay with Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac buying up the crap loans till they went belly up and it all collapsed.
I disagree about tax cuts not stimulating the economy because I think the millions of people making decisions about where to spend the money they worked for is a far superior way to run an economy than a few hundred or thousand beauracrats doing so. Still, Nicole, you put forth what is a reasoned arguement. Too many here are bitter conspiracy theorist assigning motivations for the actions of others.

I have actually enjoyed our debate but have to hit the sack. I will lurk long enough to check your response if you have one.

NoBuddy's picture

"The banking bubble said was caused by money being lent to people unable to pay..."

... Whose mortgages were bundled into a security that was graded "AAA" indicating an ability TO pay. That's the nexus of the meltdown, and the reason why the fiasco scaled.

It was the "AAA" rating of the mortgage backed securities that had the mortgage originators seeking out new loans, because once they were bundled into a security and sold, the originator was paid. And due to the AAA rating, the originator was paid MORE than the loan was worth.

Ape-Man's picture

See how easy it gets when we have the same facts nads.

It's more complicated than that, but we
have to start with the same facts.

Like i'm glad you know that FOX Theatre is

During the Bush administration the world lost respect for us. But they still liked Americans. http://pewglobal.org/2005/06/23/us-image-up-s...

And the banking collapse was not due solely to Fannie and Freddie defaults. You have to put blame on credit default swaps and derivatives as well. In fact, I would assign a far larger percentage to them then to Fannie/Freddie.
www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&ai...

And unfortunately, we have some 30 years of proof that tax cuts don't stimulate to the same extent that extending UI or investing in infrastructure does.

Bush thinks he was flying, but he was just wasted on coke (and booze, but no need to go there). He's lead a privileged life and avoided work of any kind. Cheney ran things from 2000 to 2008. But you're probably OK with that, an ineffectual president, a puppet, a deciderer. He was Xian, white, stupid and loved starting wars, hence his appeal to the BAGGERS. A real American.

- I vote against the Republicans as the greater of the two evils. If "Instant Runoff" ever becomes reality, I'll vote in line with someone who adheres to the following:
- I'm fiscally conservative, which means I don't like squandering a lot of money.
- I'm especially anti-ideologue, which means I don't like theories or financial ideologies guiding my decisions, I like the data guiding policy. As an example, in health care, I don't care whether it's a free market approach, or a government approach, so long as it's the cheapest approach. I noticed that certain options were "taken off the table" to preclude cost comparisons. If left to me, I would copy a health system from abroad, as Ross Perot suggested. He was a businessman, and I want a businessman approach in fixing health care.
- Quagmires. We're currently mired in three quagmires, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the so called "war on drugs". Between all three, we're blowing about $300B per year. I want exit strategies devised for all three wars.

Take Afghanistan:
The NATO position on the poppy business is: "We cannot be in a situation where we remove the only source of income for people who live in the second poorest country in the world without being able to provide them an alternative. That is simply not possible," .
http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?contex...

So, they don't want to take away the financing mechanism that the Taliban uses to finance the war? So, we're locking up people in the U.S. for buying something we think should be sold in Afghanistan, and where the proceeds are used to wage war against us?

You are right. We don't like Republicans or Democrats. I think people in the middle are people who are stuck. As they say, it's a choice between bad or worse. You haven't been here long, or you would have heard me said that the corporate media is steering people into a false dichotomy, namely a dichotomy between bad or worse. Take financial reform:

Q: What happens if the regulations to prevent a depression enacted during our last depression are repealed?

Q: What happens if the regulations to prevent a depression aren't reinstated?

Way I see it, we can't get past DumbBell 101.

But, whether you're Left, or Right, support Instant Runoff, if you're not happy with the status quo. And be sensitive to when you're being steered into a false dichotomy. Remember, there are not necessarily two sides to a story, there may be 10 sides to the story. Someone steering towards only two sides often results in a false choice.

--Edit
The correct choice might be one that is "off the table."

I've often confused Jackie Chan and Gary Cooper. I just try to remember that Jackie smiles a lot.

I think Jackie Chan is taller, too.

Vekol Wash (the location under discussion) was known as a major route when I used to go camping there with my Boy Scouts back in 2004. Another Asst. Scoutmaster was a Border Patrol guy, and he made sure he kept in touch with his compatriots so that we were safe. Twenty or so boys, and only four adults, in a dry camp... fun times! I felt pretty safe with the Border Patrol there, much more so than if it were now with a bunch of vigilante wanna-be types with high-powered weapons.

US Deputy Secretary of State James Steinberg on Saturday called for the urgent dispatch of a police mission to Kyrgyzstan following ethnic clashes, as OSCE ministers met in Kazakhstan.

An international police mission "will help restore order, especially on the eve of elections, and will promote a swift reconciliation between the two sides in southern Kyrgyzstan," Steinberg said in comments translated into Russian.

Top diplomats from the 56 states of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) held a second day of bilateral meetings outside the Kazakh city of Almaty

Some stuff you can't make up!

Another day, another military deployment. The southern border is important, because that's where the big money boys want to build the pipeline through Af-Pak to the ocean.

Notice how the military backs up America's economic interests abroad.

Perhaps I'm a little jaded tonight, after finally watching my first Michael Moor film, the one about Capitolism.

It's very simple. Got resources to exploit, US military arrives to "spread democracy". No resources to exploit? FU.

I'd imagine they'd like to "restore order" because the right wing, fascist, capitalist side is losing the fight. No one anywhere on the face of the earth is allowed to have any other mode of government than the brand that the US sells. Try to go your own way and Uncle Sam and several thousand of his nephews will come to visit.

No one's spreading democracy here and we have bombs and stuff.

I was never a big fan of Gary Shandling's stand up, but his clip had me ROTF...."he must be easy to shop for on fathers day" great stuff.
G.S. was great in the Larry Sanders Show, and the show had a good supporting cast.
I wish that they would revive the Larry sanders Show in some form.
