Speaking of children dying in Gaza:

If this story could be seriously investigated and proven to be true, this would be absolute evidence of MAJOR war crimes against Israel.

This sickens me to my core.

NOW on PBS is asking for your comments on what is Bush's Legacy.

The comments aren't all that positive (surprise, surprise!)

Commenter: Kathleen B
Running for president was the worst idea and this country has had to pay the consequences ever since...While they walk away with billions of dollars, (money made from the oil companies, businesses and bank investments into the invasion of the Iraqian people and the so-called rebuilding, cough choke cough puke, of Iraq, their sincerity overwhelms me. They have walked away with billions of dollars unaccounted for in the spending of this rebuilding and then their cover up stories that the main stream media wanted us to swallow in how great a job this administration has been doing. This is the very scary part, for if it was not for the production and investigation (with the reputation of accredited journalism) of Now, Bill Moyers, Nova, NPR and a few objective news papers, such as; the Washington Post and independent radio stations and the internet they may have gotten away with the story never being told...I can not tell you the best thing George W. Bush has ever done because it is probably an action, such as; the support to cure aids and 500 square miles of coral reef habitat ... Conservation and Management Act; in 2009 the Senate clears the way for passage of legislation that would expand wilderness protection to more than 2 million acres of public land nationwide, mostly in California and the west; to cover up the worse things he has done. You know, Bush, he will support you if he gets good publicity and remember, he never forgets an ally.

Commenter: kate
Bush's worst decision was becoming the President! The Best decisions is he is finally leaving office!
The last 8 years were "hell" for working Americans and wonderful for the wealthy! This was the worst President in many ways as ever elected- oh I forgot he was not elected he was appointed in one of the most corruped elections ever!!!!!!!!

Commenter: SPENCER ADAMS
WORST DECISION:
Conveniently believing Ahmad Chalabi and his defectors, putting together a PR campaign to sell the WMD story, knowing it was fatally flawed, and convincing the news media that the country was in immediate peril.

BEST DECISION:
Leaving office without completely destroying the Constitution.

Commenter: Ilof Musich
Beyond a doubt, invading Iraq was THE worst decision. And the decision to invoke expanded executive powers to suit himself in his waging of war about as bad as his relaxation of the long-held Geneva Conventions to fulfill his obcession with torture and treatment of prisoners. Between you and me, though - his very worst decision was to pick Dick Cheney as VP.

One in Lake Ponchartrain during Kartina. No way it could have turned out as successfully as yesterday's heroic effort.

Does C&L show a double standard when it comes to Obamas choice of say Tim Geithner for Treasury Secretary by not saying anything about it, or is paying taxes just for suckers?

Nicole Belle's picture

But personally, I don't really care. From what I understand this is a common mix up with people in similar positions. He paid it all when it came to light.

It's stupid, yes. He should have had better advice, absolutely. But is that the thing that bothers me about Geithner's nomination? Nope.

hungryMoose's picture

He should have had better advice? Wow! The guy nominated to be in charge of the treasury needs advice to pay his taxes. Amazing.

FilthyHarry's picture

I'm willing to give Obama a lot of leeway on his appointees simply because he seems to be choosing people who are recognized experts in their field as opposed to the cronies Bush appointed.

For example?

MsJoanne's picture

with penalties. And is is supposed to be quite common for people who fall under what the IRS code calls self-employed...many do not realize they fall into that category. It's a weird bit of IRS code.

hungryMoose's picture
OK

But the organization that he worked for takes that into account and cuts them a check for the taxes they need to pay. Its one of the perks they had. He must have thought it was a bonus.

MsJoanne's picture

Do you have a link?

MsJoanne's picture

As someone who was told by both an accountant and an attorney that I would have no tax obligation once...and wound up owing the IRS $22,000.00, I have a hard time with seeing fault with what is in this article. Additionally, the people griping are Republican's, who will do that any opportunity given. I cannot find fault for the nightmare which is paying taxes.

Nicole Belle's picture

I am self-employed as well, and I got bad advice from my accountant (and attorney as well, come to that, since I'm married to him) and ended up owing taxes myself, even though I had done everything I thought I was supposed to do.

That's why I'm less concerned about Geithner's tax issues than I am Geithner's attitude towards stimulus for the economy. I think we've had more than enough proof than Friedman policies don't work. I want to see a true Keynesian for a change.

Why is the money laundered by Hamas and Arafat not being used to train Palestinians in more productive ventures than suicide bombing? Why is it, when Israeli doctors do want to treat Muslim patients, the Red Cross won't let them wear their country's symbol on their clothing? Why is it, when Israeli children get killed, the Palestinians and their supporters don't demand Syria and Iran stop funding Hamas, or demand that Hamas stop attacking innocent people? After all, the phrase "little Eichmann" works both ways, you know.

chicano2nd's picture

Opinions, opinions, opinion. But no facts. Very, very sad!

Why do they talk about Palestinians smuggling weapons to defend themselves? How come nobody mentions where the Israelist get their weapons from? Is the world acuatually waiting for Gaza and their people to be totally wipe out?
With Obama taking over the US Presidency, chances are that the Gaza catastrophe will move to the bottom of worl events.

Tequila's picture

chicano:

And that justifies the atrocities for you?

No, but it justifies their atrocities for people sympathetic to them. After all, no one's calling bullshit on the Arabs' refusal to do anything about Darfur...

Garcia:

Why do they talk about Palestinians smuggling weapons to defend themselves? How come nobody mentions where the Israelist get their weapons from?

I'm guessing because the Israelis aren't connected to countries which like to randomly hijack planes every time things don't go their way.

Is the world acuatually waiting for Gaza and their people to be totally wipe out?

Nope, but I imagine the Gazans would rather be wiped out than back a political group willing to make peace with Israel.

chicano:

I can lump you with the rest of the apologists. Don't play the Dafur game with me. Are you a Bush lapdog when it comes to Dafur?

Nope. But it seems that the Arab League would agree with Bush that it's not worth dealing with, unless it personally affects them.

and the Gazans would rather be wiped out. Stupid statement.

It's true. Every time someone stops working with them, and starts working with Israel, they always team up with another terrorist group. It happened with Sadat, Arafat, and Abbas; and as soon as Hamas changes its tune about recognizing Israel's right to exist, it'll be a worthless "traitor" to the Palestinians, too.

Cocacola gets sued over its "VitaminWater" claim. Obama is ready to get rid of "harsh" interrogations-with some exceptions? [The original title of the article was akin to "Obama to ban torture", but was changed for obvious reasons.] The Drug War allows a fascist cop to get away with murdering an innocent old lady, and another fascist cop to screw up procedures when issuing warrants. Another court has no problem with Bush spying on us. Eastern Europeans have never heard of "clean coal". Meanwhile, the Russkies are quickly adapting the capitalist model of profiting at their expense. Obama is not afraid to let a guy in a plane upstage him.

Seinfield was a lousy show that basically ripped off the old Gary Shandling show on FAUX back in the late 80's. It came on Sunday nights along with the Tracy Ullman show. He had his opening monologue, a fat buddy, and cute brunette girl he had a platonic relationship with (although they may've been an item at one time.) The show was basically without a plot, where anything might happen. The only one missing was Michael Richards character that seemed like he was doing his imitation of Bill the Cat.

I did like Richards, however, on Fridays.

The only trouble with Shandling was he always looked like he was squinting in the bright spotlights.

Dean ending 30-year political career
By NEDRA PICKLER – 11 hours ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — Outgoing Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said Friday he would have liked to work in the Obama administration, but instead is embarking on a life in the private sector after nearly 30 years in politics.

Dean told The Associated Press in an interview that he is weighing where next to take a career that has moved rapidly from family doctor to Vermont governor to presidential candidate to national party boss. This Wednesday, he ends a term as chairman in which Democrats recaptured the White House, seized majorities in Congress and picked up governorships.

More than half Americans say they are 'struggling': poll
Agence France-Presse
Published: Friday January 16, 2009

WASHINGTON (AFP) – The number of Americans who say their lives are a struggle climbed steeply last year from less than half the population to nearly six in 10 people, a vast Gallup poll showed Friday.

"In January of 2008, 49 percent of Americans were thriving, 47 percent struggling and four percent were suffering. In November and December, 38 percent were thriving, 58 percent struggling and four percent suffering," Gallup scientist Jim Harter commented on findings of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index.

Is that the same as being filled with pride because he has a D beside his name? I really hope you people all realize, you are setting yourselves up for major disappointments, just reading the posts on blogs. One, he's a politician. They all pretty much fit into one category. Two, the mess the US is in, is going to get alot worse before there is a light on the horizon, if it does come. If he hasn't waved some kind of magic wand quickly, the Dems will get pounded next election, regardless who is to blame. Starving unemployed people don't have the luxury of waiting for promises to be fulfilled. There has to be fast turnarounds. There won't be.

I support your views and it is refreshing to see some of the staff a C&L, too many too mention now, are rightfully critical of Obama's stated policy direction.

The attacks on your comments have been really pathetic and can hardly pass for debate. Anyone who considers themselves progressive should be very upset with Obama, seriously.

ConcernedCanuck's picture

What these people aren't seeing, is Clinton was considered a centerist. Ya that was memorable. Triangulation until strangulation. Drove the poor man to shooting blanks all over the WhiteHouse! Gave the world Nafta! Deregulation, and all kinds of Republican goodies. Now Obama is promising the same. Oh he isn't sworn in yet. That's why he gives weekly internet addresses. Everything he says in these addresses is meaningless until he's sworn in. So basically what his blind supporters are saying is, everything he's said since the election, have been lies. Reach into your pocket and feel the change.

mudshark's picture

I just like to point out that not all people are pleased with Obama. I see that, and I understand that. That's ok.
I never thought he'd please everyone. No one can be everything to everybody. Now, I understand all about FISA, The Patriot Act ect. And Yes, I'd like to see a large scale correction with all of these issues. Who wouldn't?
He has stated that he is going to close Guantanamo. That's step in the right direction. I think Obama will do a good job. It won't happen overnight. So I think a little patience is due here.
I've had this conversation before with some of these guys. And that's ok.
But I do think Obama deserves at least to be able to be sworn in and given 3-6 months. Then we'll get a good idea of where he really is going. It is a good thing that people question his decisions. Sometimes I think it's redundant, same old shit over and over. But that's their right I suppose. I don't comment to often when I see that. It gets like listening to billo. Pretty much the same shit. It just gets old. But It's their right. I just choose not to respond to it.
Discussion is one thing, bitching is another.
Have a great day.
I'm out.

Oh, and Bill Clinton left the country with creating 21 million new jobs, and a budget surplus . There's more but wtf.

What is your conceptual, continuity?

curtilingus's picture

I've tried to hold back, but truthfully I'm really pissed about his language and apparent direction on holding people accountable. If he doesn't hold George, Inc. accountable for war crimes, and he doesn't look for accountability in the financial crisis (there has already been talk of corporate immunity from prosecution in order to prevent job loss ala Aurthur Anderson.) then what good is Barak?

It can't be swept under the rug. There is plenty of criminal activity behind the financial melt down. Barak cannot be a bull dog in one area of law and a lap dog in another.

mudshark's picture

But I won't hold my breath. I expect to see the war crimes
subpoenas come from other countries. Maybe Canada? doubt it. And yes, a thorough investigation needs to take place to get to the bottom of this financial crisis.
To throw 1 trillion dollars at it and simply walk away is not good enough. It's funny how things come about down the line somewhere. Something will pop up. One little crack will start, and it won't stop until it's all out in the open.
At least I hope so. But I won't hold my breath. It's hard to be proud of this country. When she won't/can't right herself.

"Sometimes I think it's redundant, same old shit over and over."

That's what makes the daily intake of food seem so pointless.

Now, I haven't heard this myself. But my brother just told me a few minutes ago that Obama will fund stem cell research.
Like I said before, I never expected him to do everything I wanted. But if he does fund stem cell. That's another plus.
How would someone go about correcting all the wrongs committed by bush. There's so many. It certainly won't happen immediately.
That's why I'm being patient. This will take time.
During the primaries, I said That I was sure Obama will do somethings that will piss me off . That's a given. They all do. It's impossible for a President not too.
But the issues you raise are indeed fair game.
Like I said, I agree with you and these other guys as well.
But I'm going to hold off my judgment for the time being.
You see, I still see the glass as half full.

I wonder if Richard Lewis will call B.H. Obama a coke addict like he did to G.W. Bush.
After B.H. Obama admitted to his coke use in his autobiography.

I read in a book of horror movies, that when they were casting An American Werewolf in London, David Naughton was casted last. His casting in the pivotal role of the werewolf surprised everyone else who knew him as the Dr Pepper singing and dancing pitchman. For the longest time they were going around singing:

I'm a werewolf

You're a werewolf

Wouldn't you like to be a werewolf too?

I'm a little slow on the uptick since I'm waiting for my tea to kick in.

I think you answered your own question.

boosh never did affirm nor deny he used cocaine, merely get his panties in a wad that the question was even asked.

Where's the humor in one who makes the admission?

"She don't lie, she don't lie, she don't lie...Cocaine."

But boosh does.

one of his buddies released a tape where bush states that he doesn't want the American people to know he used drugs because it sets a bad example, or something.

he used the word "drugs". That means he tried them all. I think laura's trying salvia for her first time this morning.

come on ! close down gitmo?wheres he going to hold the new prisoners at?the ones were going to capture in afganistan ? he cant bring them here , its like drug rehab houses placed in peoples community they dont want them next door where thier children might be harmed! and i havent heard him mention all the prison camps in other countrys where tortures an every day thing! as long as obummer keeps going down the road of bushes pretend wars in iraq and afganistan look for more torture , more wasted money , more american and civillian deaths in iraq ,afganistan packistan and more wasted money and deaths in palistine!

tyree's picture

i find it funny that anyone can see what went on in the democrat primaries didnt see obummers new vice president condem obummer for not haveing enough time in the senate to be worty enough or smart enough to be president then obummer picks hillary as secratary of state after her tears over how much obummer was like bush, sob sob! thier bottom feeders and will say anything to get elected , magots have more integrity!

tyree's picture

may be i am a communist! i dont believe and never have believed in spending millions of dollars for pompas cermonies such as the inaugration of presidents and the time has come to do away with wasteing millions and millons of dollars that could have went to helping the less fortunate in america , obummers train ride from philidephia alone just for show and theater will cost the american tax payers millions that could have been spent on food and shelter for the homeless ! i would have had more respect for obummer if he allso wanted to set an example for americans by being the first president to fore go the tradition of coronations and see to it that being sworn in as a president doesnt mean that you just piss taxpayers money away on a one day splurge!

the constant "grassroots" emails keep a comin' begging for money Tyree. They need it. 100 million plus for an election of the King ball in these economic times, is not real smart.

tyree's picture
