Real Time: New Rules

Bill Maher issues his new rules based on the pathetic performance of the Republican candidates last week.

New Rule: Jay Leno must sue Katie Couric. Last week Katie Couric got big laughs by asking some ignorant dumbass basic questions about current events. I'm sorry, but that's a Leno bit called "Jay-Walking" and he's been doing it for years. And by the way, Katie, Jay uses real people, not that actress you obviously hired. I mean, nobody in real life is that clueless. [..]

And finally, new rule: If you take the debating part out of a debate, it’s not a debate. Maybe it’s me, but I can’t take one more debate where undecided voters ask, “Do you favor giving us stuff?” To which the candidate responds, “That’s a great question, Slingblade.” And then launches straight in to his stump speech. I’ve seen tougher questions asked of Ron Popeil. In the VP debate, Sarah Palin even announced that she wasn’t going to answer the questions and would just say whatever the hell she wanted! Yes, we have a format for that. It’s called a speech. This is like if Peyton Manning stepped on the field on Sunday and said, “You know what? Today I’m going to play soccer.”

You know, folks, we live in a deeply divided country. Despite all of Obama’s soaring oratory about “no red states or blue states, but the United States,” the truth is we hate each other’s guts. And the debates should reflect that reality. We should get rid of those undecided numbskulls and opening the questions to the most hardcore, angry partisans we can find and let them drill away at the guy they hate.

Full transcript below the fold...

New rule: John McCain has to stop saying, “I know how to get Osama bin Laden”. Well if you do, tell us, Mr. Country First. Does it involve laser beams on sharks? Is it something you read in a Hardy Boys book? Are you going to track him like Rambo, call in the coordinates and then have Palin shoot him from a helicopter?

New rule: CNN has to get rid of that stupid voter reaction graph. At least when McCain is talking. Every time I look at the screen, I think, ‘oh my God, he’s dead.’

And speaking of TV screens that are too busy: new rule: stop drawing stuff on my football field. Because I think we all know where this is headed.

New rule: Bird watchers have to wear uniforms, so I don’t mistake them for perverts trying to peak in my window. Look, I’m sorry I chased you down the street naked screaming. I thought you were TMZ. Can’t we let bygones be bygones and agree to drop the charges? Look on the bright side. For a bunch of octagenarians, you ladies sure can run. Oh I don’t need your pity.

New rule: Jay Leno must sue Katie Couric. Last week, Katie Couric got big laughs by asking some ignorant dumbass basic questions about current events. I’m sorry, but that’s a Leno bit called “Jaywalking” and he’s been doing it for years. And by the way Katie, Jay uses real people, not that actress you obviously hired. I mean , nobody in real life is that clueless.

And here at Real Time, we did just that.

Here are some of the questions we asked or people asked of us...of the candidates. Patrica Martin of Baltimore asked – she’s a McCain supporter – she asked Obama: Senator, when you were on your annual pilgrimage to Mecca, will Joe Biden serve as Acting President or will you be able to maintain your constitutional duties while waging jihad?

Lupe Altaveros of Yuma, Arizona, an Obama supporter, asks Senator McCain: Senator, this year, the NY Times printed a front page story alleging that you had a recent affair with a blonde lobbyist lady. But the story disappeared because the lady disappeared. And I’d like to know how you killed her. Did you bury her under one of your 13 houses? Or stuff her in the trunk of one of your 11 ca rs?

Jim Bob Billy Bob of Clearfield, Pennsylvania, a McCain supporter, asks: Senator Obama, why are you so black?

Tony B. from Brooklyn, an Obama supporter, asks: Sen. McCain, you dragged your adorable 96 year old mother around with you to show us that in McCain years, you’re still a teenager. Which would explain your behavior. But did being 72 give you pause when you chose Gov. Palin? And a followup question: Sarah Palin, are you fucking kidding me?

A Mr. Ice Cold Ghost Killa from Compton, California, who is a McCain supporter, that’s a surprise, and his question to Obama is: Sen. Obama, that old white man and his bitch keep lying about you and you never call them out on it. Does your wife keep your balls in her purse or does she keep them in a box at home?

And Gordie Levinson, an Obama supporter from Seattle, asks Sen. McCain: Senator, you preface every remark with “my friends”. If I am truly your friend, can I crash in one of your houses for a while because I just lost mine to a bank that imploded. Thanks for the regulation, numbnuts!

This is interesting and the McCain camp appears headed for more land mines this week as another ethics panel, the one recommended by McCain with the Palin appointees on it, takes her testimony this week. Uh-oh! Another splatter in her pampers!

Bill Maher rocks! He's the greatest!

Ron Popeil...Peyton Manning...

Who the f**k?

Okay New Rule, if you denounce sports analogies in politics, than you can't refer to sports figures.

Ron Popeil isn't a sports figure,
unless you want consider him one as the inventor of the "Pocket Fisherman" ...

Hey! As a kid, I had one of those. It worked, and was quite cool!

Link no work.

Should work now. Extra space in the URL confused the server

Sorry Bill, Rush Insanity and the rest already have a market on wingnuts, bobble heads and absolutely clueless callers asking those questions.

McCain has made much out of Obama-Ayers connection but at the same time is silent on Palin's AIP connections. But latter is much more problematic – Why? See below:

1 = ISSUE
2 = OBAMA-AYERS
3 = PALIN-AIP

1= CONNECTION
2= Knew each other
3= Husband member, self supporter

1= CRIME
2= Domestic terrorist
3= Declared Seditionist

1= TACTICAL DAMAGE
2= Bombed Govt buildings
3= Separation of Alaska from union

1= STRATEGIC DAMAGE
2= '000 of $ of govt property, few accidental lives
3= Loss of a state and key petroleum source

1= MOTIVATION
2= Stop Vietnam war
3= Declared hate for “America and its damned institutions”

1= CANDIDATE'S PHYSICAL LOCATION AT THE TIME OF CRIME
2= 8 year old
3= Last 10 years and continued

1= CURRENT ACTIVITIES
2= Professor and education advocate
3= Continuing efforts to secede Alaska

1= MEDIA ATTENTION
2= For 1 year, very heavy in last 1 week
3= Media ignoring this connection

1= CANDIDATE'S RESPONSE TO CRIMES
2= Denounced Ayer's crimes
3= Silent on husband and self's AIP relationship

1= INVOLVEMENT IN CANDIDATE'S CURRENT DECISIONS
2= No involvement in the presidential campaign and no contact for last 4 years
3= Husband (AIP member) has an active role in government office, contact with staff and influencing decisions. Candidate spoke at AIP convention in 2008 and praised their "good work"

Now tell me which relationship is worse?
And then why is media not asking Palin about this? Demand ANSWERS from these hypocrites!!!!

while C&L uses a jack hammer in the vid. dept......lol..I had a lady wingnut question the Obama logo as un-american instead of the flag. I explained that the 'O' stood for OBAMA..duh...and the stripes represent American flag stripes. Her reply....SILENCE.

OK,

Now, I'm a Christian, so before anyone lambasts me, please realize that I'm an Obama supporter, and also, I happen to believe I've been forgiven for MY sins.

What I mean by that is, I do not judge others (I take the "red text" in the Bible pretty seriously, especially the acceptance, forgiveness parts).

Another part is that no one can condemm me except my Maker, but if you feel you must, go ahead.

Thank you.

Bill Maher is such a smart guy. I love him. I have a friend at work who is so intelligent and just like him (though not NEARLY as smart).

This friend at work is the ONLY person I love to talk to about politics. The group I simply cannot stand is the "abortion" voters.
These people actually are test from God on my patience.

With the vitriol coming from the right wing, I can actually understand why my friend and Bill Maher will not submit to that as some kind of willing sheep who likes it in the "ass".

I'm glad, as a Dem, that I have to be able to "calculate" 2+2 in order to post.

Peace.

with you being a Christian or not? I don't get the connection when it comes to this post. Why did you have to even bring it up to simply say that you like Bill Maher?

I can't really answer your question.

I just know Maher will not admit there is a God, and mocks Jesus.
I don't condemn him for that. With what I see of so called "religious" people, I can see the side of him that is soooooooo closer to the message of the Jesus.

It was just a gut thing from me, and is off topic, and is wrong.

I'm so frustrated at the religious right, at the vitriol being spewed at these rallys. The hatred, racism, and quite possibly violence.

I'm so pissed off that the message of Jesus is being so twisted by these "religous" people that I am out of my mind.

You are absolutely correct.

Thank you.

Thank you for posting your feelings. As an agnostic, I am disgusted by what I call the Faux Christians - the ones who loudly proclaim their Christianity, yet their actions go against what Jesus taught. It's sad, because there ARE Christians out there who follow his teachings, and also keep their religion out of their politics. While I don't believe that Jesus was "my savior," I do think he (if he actually historically existed) was a wise person who left us with some ideas we should follow (tolerance, forgiveness, caring for the downtrodden.)

What this may have to do with Bill Maher, I don't know. But I felt like responding, since you seem frustrated by the right-wing usurpation of your religion. Best thing you can do is to vote for Obama as well as point out that his ideas for the country actually reconcile with Jesus' message much more so than McCain's.

Oh, yeah, and point out to those folks that Jesus was a darker-skinned man from the Middle East; how does that square with the neo-Christian racism?

If the same test was applied in the voting booth, I think we could eliminate a lot of Republican votes.

But Obama Does have a Plan to Win these Undecideds: Light Up!

Ummm.....

I did, I am.

But, If you have a "bone to pick" with me, what may that be?

OK,

2+2=5.

Is that better?

Me.

Sorry, man. Just trying to be helpful. If you register and log in you shouldn't have to do the math problem.

Thanks,

I'm pretty ah, what you would call, defensive.

I think "my" problem is that every time I close out the C&L website, I forget to login before I post.

Hense, "our" little problem.

But I have to tell you, I'm an engineer, and I did get that little addtion problem wrong once (in the heat of MY vitriol).

La La La.

Me.

It's all good.

... and integral. That would keep the riff-raff out. Still the current approach probably keeps the Wall Streeters out too. To them the answer to 2 + 2 is "whatever we think we can get away with".

Little hiccup in the URL has been corrected.

but no thanks.

I only just started drinking tonight.

)O(

That is just wishful thinking.

Thanks, Bluegal.
Great stuff per norm.

We're been screwed and nothings going to change it. Achievers and the ambitious will survive while reality eats the slothful, lazy, and unmotivated for dinner for quite a while to come even with Obama in charge.

Look at the bright side. We're starting over with a blank sheet of paper.

We're not there yet. They are still caging, purging and trying to disenfrachising voters.

America's infrastructure is falling apart due to lack of maintenance and funding. Bridges falling apart, roads crumbling, sewer systems collapsing, steam lines exploding etc.

What we need is more entertainment.

bill mahers ever the douchbag!

Pundits and others in the media cannot call it a debate in the [alleged] best democracy in the world if the American people only get to see and hear from a Democrat and a Republican. Canada recently held two debates to help determine who would govern their country. This may sound stunning to those who live in the United States but Canadians, unlike in the U.S., were able to base their judgments after hearing from five [yes 5] people who held five different points of view. In the United States, as if it came from Orwell's Animal Farm [two legs good, four legs bad], an American citizen can choose a candidate running for president as long as that person is either a Democrat or a Republican. This is designed to happen because those who control the debates had been formerly connected to the two major parties and the last thing that they wish to see happen is for a third party or independent or socialist candidate to call Obama and McCain on their lies and deceptions brought about by their ties to the corporate and military-industrial complex. Democracy? Legitimate debates? No, more like a sham and a deception and a chimera and an illusion designed to fool the American people into believing that this is what this country has while ignoring the stranglehold that the two party duopoly has placed upon its people.

Couldn't agree more.

That's why many believe a parliamentary system would be a positive change for this country.

And it will never happen unless there's a "shock doctrine"-type event because too much money is bound up in keeping the status quo.

I'd love to see someone like Chimpy or Palin have to answer Parliament's weekly questions like they do in England, though. I can hear Palin's cookie recipe now...she'd probably bring her youngest daughter so no one asked her anything hard.

That's why many believe a parliamentary system would be a positive change for this country.

How so?

We should get rid of those undecided numbskulls and opening the questions to the most hardcore, angry partisans we can find and let them drill away at the guy they hate.

I guess I have to disagree with Maher. I don't think there's any place in society for hate--even though people like Palin go beyond the limits of my patience and, often, my tolerance.

It seems to me that the true point of debate--and elections, hopefully--is finding the person you most agree with and bringing people to some sort of concensus at best, or compromise at least.

That's hard to do given the current state of things. It seems like the things Progressives value rarely even get a nod. Still, turning on the "hate spigot" just leaves everybody soaked.

McCain finished at the bottom of his college class. Palin got a 435 out of 800 on her SAT verbals. When do they haul out the bumper sticker "Vote for Dumb and Dumber"?

n/t

"Ice Cold Ghost Killa, a McCain supporter..."

That one had me on the floor

PLEASE explain how, when I went to view the WMP version of this clip, I saw an add FOR California's Proposition 8? Does C&L not have control over the links/ads that appear in the pop-up window? I really want an answer, because Prop 8 is is Prop Hate, and I'm sure C&L isn't endorsing it. Thanks.

What an ass, a complete water carrying dolt. Literally blaming the dems for everything that happened in the last eight years. And giggling like a pedophile sitting in a puddle of his own spilt seed,... what a repulsive creep. WSJ, you could save some cash by docking this guy,...

I was out all day and just watched this. Thanks, C&L, I needed the laughs. Good to be home again.

Can we stop the talking head sunday shows from putting people from the two campaigns on so they can repeat their candidates' talking points and stump speeches? WE HAVE REAL PROBLEMS IN THIS COUNTRY AT THE MOMENT AND I DON'T THINK WE NEED "HE SAID, SHE SAID" POLITICS GETTING IN THE WAY OF REAL SOLUTIONS. Why not have real non-partisan experts on TV discussing how crises can be solved! Tom Brokaw are you listening? Is anybody listening? Barack Hussein Obama will be the next President but even he could use some good/better ideas not stump speeches.

Good point, it doesn't seem like any one is interested in discussing any real issues.

Christiantiy after the post of guitar man

Does anyone see a problem with Pro-lifers that support the death penalty??

I'm sorry, but that's a Leno bit called "Jay-Walking" and he's been doing it for years.

Jay stole it from Steve Allen. I believe that Bill Dana was the interviewer.

How is asking idiots questions for cheap amusement a copyrighted feature?

Funny, funny stuff. Im beginning to like Bill Maher as much as I like Jon Stewart. They both cut right through the bullshit and bring out the totally absurd side of politics in general and rethugs in particular. And make very telling points in doing so.

With the state of the usa today, you either have to laugh or cry.
