In my eight months of intensely monitoring Fox, this is perhaps the first O'Reilly segment I positively enjoyed. This kayaker is nuts, but wow. I dunno what makes him a "patriot" per se, but still, wow. Palouse Falls is gigantic.
Will O'Reilly revoke this kid's "patriot" status once he finds out the guy's a liberal?

Goldman Sachs has been caught at another racket in the stock market: front-running trades. What a clever gambit, done with the help of the markets themselves - the Nasdaq in particular - in which information on trades is held back a fraction of a second from public view, while the data is shoveled to the computers of privileged subscribers who can execute zillions of programmed micro-trades before the rest of the herd makes a move. There can be a tremendous amount of water over Palouse Falls, as the video shows. This is the neck of the woods I grew up in... my native waters!

I live about 45 minutes from there. It's worth seeing anytime of the year. But it's really worth seeing in the spring. And that's when this guy did this, at the peak of the flow in the spring. I didn't believe it when someone told me it had been done.

O'Reilly could be a "patriot" if he would for once yell and scream at Beck for his antics, especially for calling Obama a "racist." But, no, O'Reilly chooses to be a pinhead by laughing right along with idiot Beck.
On the "Daily Show" tonight, Jon Stewart spoofed Beck and his racist remarks; he played a clip from Beck on his radio show today where Beck said he stands by his statement that Obama is a "racist." Beck really is getting out of control. He's always been deranged and mentally unstable, but now, I think power and greed are really bringing him to new lows.
Beck is a recovering addict, and gives the lie to the romantic notion that recovering addicts are all noble people trying hard once they become sober. Beck has taken the opportunities given him to become one of the most craven, deceitful, illogical voices in media today. He is an indecent, deficient human being.
Recovering substance abusers are people, not saints.
I'm taking Beck's inventory here, but he does it all the time, so...
a. Beck is not using or drinking if he is to be believed - but he is most certainly not "recovering" because his attitude is that of a spoiled brat eleven year or - an active addict/alcoholic.
b. At some point, he will either change or go back out.
c. For his sake, I hope he changes.
I don't know much about this, but I've heard of a term called "dry drunk," meaning a person who has stopped drinking but because he hasn't sought treatment, he does odd and weird things like Beck does. He's probably such a "dry drunk."
I cannot stand that guy, but a small part of me does feel sorry for him. I really do think mental illness runs in his family. His mother committed suicide; he had a brother who did the same.
That doesn't excuse his hate and rantings. Either he needs to get help to control himself, or he needs to get booted off the air.
A dry drunk can occur in recovery. It is usually short-lived and means that the person has all the attitudes and character defects of a wet drunk, but isn't drinking. the only reason I wouldn't use the term with Beck is that his attitudes are long term.
It stops when he or she recognizes what's going on and applies the tools of recovery.
Beck is simply a person who is dry, or not using drugs. He is not sober, in my opinion because that term, to me, implies a level of maturity beyond adolescence. Beck is an early adolescent in an adult's body. Add booze and you have the quintessential drunk.

One of the cornerstones of recovery is HUMILITY. Which is actually very nice.
A dry drunk can be life-long. A dry drunk is someone who gave up the bottle, but didn't do the recovery work. They are frutrated and erratic, often ego-maniacs. They pat themselves on the back (excessively) for not drinking, but they're just a fucked up as they used to be, maybe even moreso (because they don't get the release drink gave them.)
Dry drunks are often/usually assholes, and very unpleasant people. Sound like anyone(s) we know???
Some of them become born again Xians and ramp up the asshole features that already lie within.

Yes, I hope you have good mental health insurance. Make sure your loved ones keep an eye out for any signs of instability. Watching to much toxic TV is not good for you. Does C & L have a policy of rotating you out of the wasteland after a certain number of months? Be careful!
but going over falls in a kayak does not make one a patriot. I've floated down the Snake River from Hell's canyon and that doesn;t make me a patriot. I did it twice and I'm still not a patriot for doing it. I served in the army and I stand up for the constitution. That makes me a patriot.

Many of us think that health care reform without a "public option" is not reform at all. But is the so called public option being set up for failure? Mad As Hell Doctors think so: "First: we will still have a dysfunctional health care system designed around insurance companies. Second: it will be impossible to cover everyone without raising taxes. The Obama administration is already saying it is acceptable to leave out 15 million people.
Which 15 million? Will you be one of them? Who gets to decide? Third: in a "post-option" environment you can bet that the health insurance industry will manipulate the rules so that the sickest, most expensive patients will gravitate toward the public plan, which will cause it to fail. When it does, the opponents of real reform will point to the "public option" and scream: "See! Single Payer won't work!"
