Obama approves another 13,000 troops for Afghanistan, that is on top of the previous 21,000, here

This is in addition to the over 60,000 additional soldiers requested by Gen. Stanley McChrystal, which seems poised to raise the occupation force to one larger than even the failed Soviet occupation of Afghanistan in the 1980’s. If approved, it will also mean President Obama will have more than tripled the number of American soldiers on the ground since taking office.

Glenn Greenwald writes in a broader vein here

article earlier today, which was interesting. Just confirms what I/We already believed/knew to be the case. The amazing thing is that these people are so brazen anymore, they don't make much of an effort to conceal what they're doing....and still, most Americans don't get it.

I was wondering when I read it, how she had access to the calendars/phone records?. I was thinking how nice it would be to get Cheney's phone records for, say, the week of Sept 1-11,2001...

Everytime you buy something from a Rite Aid Pharmacy, some of that money goes to the Republiklan party.

Everytime you buy Tyson Chicken some of that money goes to conservative Democratic Representative Mike Ross who opposes any government plan for health insurance.

Every time you use an American Express Card, some of that money goes to conservative Democratic Senator Max Baucus who opposes any government plan for health insurance.

I have the solution to too much company influence over legislation. Boycott some of those companies en masse and make them get it for us. Yes, we will need to get at least 100,000 people to act on these. With these actions you can help limit corporate power.

Make these phone calls and spread the word.

Boycott Tyson Foods of Arkansas who gave Mike Ross D-Arkansas $37,000 for his campaigns. Call lobbyist for Tyson Foods Chuck Penry 202 393 3921 and tell him politely that you refuse to buy Tyson chicken until Mike Ross D-Arkansas the leader of the Blue Dogs on health care gets the entire house and senate conservative Democrats to help get HR 676 enacted into law. Tell others to call.

Boycott American Express who gave Max Baucus $50,000 for his campaigns. Call Joanna Lambert at 212 640 9668 and politely tell her you will not use any American Express cards until Max Baucus gets HR 676 enacted into law. Tell others to call.

Call GOP contributor Rite Aid Pharmacies at 800 325 3737 and tell the person to get the CEO to get congress to enact HR 676 Single payer health care and enact a new Medicare Prescription drug benefit in Medicare Part B covering 80% of the cost of drugs with no extra premiums, no extra deductibles, no means tests, no coverage gaps, and remove the means test for Medicare Part B and until that happens, you won't buy ANYTHING from Rite Aid Pharmacies.

In 2008 Brown-Forman, the maker of Jack Daniels Whiskey and Southern Comfort gave Mitch McConnell money for his campaigns. CALL Brown-Forman AT 502-585-1100 and tell the person who answers to get the CEO to GET Mitch McConnell to execute no Republican filibusters and enact the Employee free choice act into law or you don't buy Jack Daniel's whiskey and Southern Comfort anymore!

Call GOP contributor Wendy's restaurants at 800 443 7266 and tell the person who answers that you want their CEO to get congress to enact a $10/HR MIN. WAGE into law and until this happens you will not go to a Wendy's Restaurant.

Call GOP contributor and war contractor General Electric Corporation at 800 386 1215 or 203 373 2211 and tell the person who answers, to tell the GE CEO Jeffrey Immelt that you want him to get the President to end the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and until that happens you will not buy any GE products and that you will tell your friends about this.

Just like 'there's WMD in Iraq', and 'we don't rendition & torture', and a host of other LIES we heard from Cheney/Bush et al, there are myriad reasons for questioning how they were involved in the demolition of the WTC, and crash into the Pentagon.

I've not personally spotted any UFOs, but I've looked at hundreds of Hubble photos of the millions of galaxies in the Universe. Anyone with an open mind (or any mind) must accept the notion that we are not the only creatures, and likely not the 'best and brightest' creatures inhabiting these many worlds.

The only way we learn and make progress is to question. The Earth seems not to be flat after all......

He explained that the cockpit emergency manual, which the copilot tried to consult in the emergency landing, originally had color-coded tabs for various emergency procedures. But the "new and improved" version, in an attempt to save a few cents, had all the tabs removed!! The copilot had to consult the table of contents/index to figure out what to do! Makes what he did in landing all the more remarkable.

And am I the only one who is more than a little unnerved by the similarly designed generic emergency landing cards, instructions and equipment given on today's aircraft? "In some cases, your seat may be used as a flotation device." WTF? A water landing isn't the place to find out that you'd have been better off bringing your laptop as a life preserver...

like flaps would make such a difference on a water crash where the airspeed was already to low to keep the plane in the air.

S!~ to the pilot tho. good job :D

normally, flaps move the stall speed higher so that the aircraft is still flyable and maneuverable at slower speeds.
So much so that on final approach you'll notice that the engines get revved up higher after descent (near the runway) so that the planes descent rate and forward motion is predictable. Along with flaps already deployed nearing the runway you'll see spoiler flaps rise up and help slow the aircraft while its doing this. If another aircraft wanders onto the runway, your flight will drop the spoilers and climb on out of there.

In the case of Sullenberger and based on my schooling and experience he saved all souls on board by not deploying flaps (at least visibly) so that he could keep the aircraft in a nose high configuration as it was to first skim the water to slow down. What actually happened (art versus science) was that the aircraft refused to become influenced by ground effect and plopped into the water quickly below a speed faster than Vs1 stall. Ground effect would have given Sully a second or two for water skimming but even though he didn't have that, all worked out for all on board.
I hear tell that there were water landing procedures that weren't followed that would have possibly kept the aircraft from sinking after everyone walked away but that's all academic now.
One of the more appealing aspects of aviation is the privilege of the pilot in command to violate any rule to safely continue flying. Sully's plane did not crash. It sank on its own.

Edit: yes I changed to the italic outro on the post at the last second. I started dreaming back to memories of my own when I flew in California with San Ramon, Danville, I-580/680, Sunol reporting points to get back into the Bay Area.

I don't think it's a lottery of seats with seat flotation devices. In some cases…means if we happen to land in water and you're still breathing, can stand up and move, unVelcro your seat and drag it and your ass to a door...fast.

I loved how Sully said he could hear tension in his own voice on the recording. I'd have been shrill!

I'm not afraid to acknowledge when Republicans do the right thing, especially when it goes against party platforms. So thank you, Ahnie, for recognizing a day in honor of Matthew Shepard, and signing a bill which would recognize gay marriages made in other states. MLK's children are free at last of legal in-fighting. Stalin's grandkid thinks like a neo-con. The health care bills demand that dental care be included in coverage. At least the suckonomy guarantees Obama won't have to deal with a troop shortage. College cutbacks mean students have to wait longer to get their degrees. [Not that they mean anything in today's job market, anyway, but...] Grand Ol' Pigs think any "errors" at ACORN justify screwing minorities out of loans. The U.S. wants a bunker-buster, but won't admit it's for Iran. The Nobel jury's argument for award Obama the peace prize. Teachers and day-laborers have benefited from the stimulus plan. Three female prison inmates accuse the Oklahoma governor's staff of raping them. Max Fuckus doesn't think our health care system is "broke". I like how Cali's more concerned about storms than it is about building houses near places vulnerable to fires and mudslides. Not that she's the only one in this state, but the Guvernator's wife violated the cell phone driving law. Karzai lies about the last election. R.I.P. Oasis. Seniors surprisingly have it easier with the flu than the rest of us. More Ford-style quality control.

seniors. IIRC, the flu pandemic of 1918 also killed far more young, healthy adults than it did the aged and very young.
