Orangutan, thanks for posting the information about the Gaza humanitarian aid appeal.

More than 20,000 homes were demolished or destroyed in Gaza. Thousands of Gazans now live in temporary UN/Red Cross tents, but there isn't enough space for everyone.

They need blankets, medical supplies and food.

A modest donation can go a long way in helping them.

The BBC Won't Play This Gaza Aid Appeal

Israel's assault on the Gaza Strip cannot be justified by self-defense. An armed attack that is not justified by self-defense is a war of aggression.

FilthyHarry's picture

War of aggression!? Who do those damn Israelis think they are? America?

Loom's picture

Hey tubesox,

When it comes to Israel and the US media, Israel is untouchable. There is no such thing as freedom of speech. Any time a US journalist has the courage to speak up they are persecuted.

We know where the $10,000,000 A DAY that Israel gets from the US government goes. That money goes to killing thousands of innocent civilians and to building new colonies for religious fanatics from Israel in the occupied territories.

would the palestinian arabs open their arms to their new neighbors?

Loom's picture

One of a kind... gets honorary citizenship.

The same goes for the Israeli pianist Daniel Barenboim.

Reflections of an American-Israeli-Palestinian Jew

By Uriel Heilman · September 4, 2008

The activist, Jeff Halper, says he was given honorary Palestinian citizenship in Gaza, making him probably the only American-Israeli-Palestinian Jew in the world (Halper is a native of Minnesota).

Here are some of Halper's reflections:

To be honest, we Israeli Jews are the problem. The Palestinian years ago accepted our existence in the country as a people and are willing to accept ANY solution – two states, one state, no state, whatever. It is us who want exclusivity over the "Land of Israel" who cannot conceive of a single country, who cannot accept the national presence of Palestinians (we talk about "Arabs" in our country), and who have eliminated by our settlements even the possibility of the two-state solution in which we take 80% of the land. So it's sad, truly sad, that our "enemies" want peace and co-existence (and tell me that in HEBREW) and we don't...

When I was in Gaza everyone in Israel – including the media who interviewed me – warned me to be careful, to watch out for my life. Aren't you scared? they asked. Well, the only time I felt genuine and palpable fear during the entire journey was when I got back to Israel. I went from Gaza through the Erez checkpoint because I wanted to make the point that the siege is not only by sea. On the Israeli side I was immediately arrested, charged with violating a military order prohibiting Israelis from being in Gaza and jailed at the Shikma prison in Ashkelon. In my cell that night, someone recognized from the news. All night I was physically threatened by right-wing Israelis – and I was sure I wouldn't make it till the morning. Ironically, there were three Palestinians in my cell who kind of protected me, so the danger was from Israelis, not Palestinians, in Gaza as well as in Israel.

Uncle Joe Mccarthy's picture

doesnt jibe with the facts on the ground...but it sure is beautiful

ill bring it to the graves of those yeshiva students killed in chevron in 1929, im sure they will be happy to know that it was they who were the problem and the palestinians were really happy to have them there

Loom's picture

You ain't fooling no one, tubesox.

But since you asked a legitimate question, I'll answer it.

The answer is yes. The Palestinian authority in its charter has a clause regarding citizenship and there is no discrimination against any religion. There are in fact a few Jews who applied for Palestinian citizenship and were granted the passports.

Uncle Joe Mccarthy's picture

well thanks for answering

so i guess the settlements really dont matter then

and if you are right, there is no reason not to allow palestinian control of jerusalem...for the jews will continue to have full access to all their holy places...just like they did between 1948 and 1967....

i just solved the entire mideast peace process

and i agree...the aid packages should stop

israel needs to join the list of debtor nations...like anybody ever really tries to collect

Loom's picture

This weapon, used by Israel in Gaza, should put the final nail in the coffin of "we are targetting Hamas only" propaganda
----------------------------------------------------------------

Former president Jimmy Carter was on Larry King Live tonight. The jist of President Carter's statements was that the US should "influence" Israel to accept a peace deal that is, not only in the interest of both parties (Palestinian and Israeli), but also in the interest of the United States because after all, he said, the US gives Israel $10,000,000/Day in aid.

He also said that the US should speak with Hamas and emphasized that Hamas was willing to take a peace proposal to the Palestinian people, in both Gaza and the West Bank. If the Palestinian people agree to the terms of the agreement, Hamas will accept it and support the will of the people.

Larry King didn't like a few points that president Carter brought up, especially regarding the targeting of civilians.

So, at the end of the interview, King simply moved on to the next guest without even thanking president Carter. It was such a blatant insult.

In addition to the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, one of the most exciting developments in fundamental physics in the last twenty years has been the development of so-called “String Theory.” In string Theory, all fundamental sub-atomic particles are visualized and described mathematically as microscopic vibrating strings. Although as yet unproven, many physicists believe that String Theory has the potential to become the long-sought “Theory of Everything,” through which the fundamental physical nature of all matter and forces will become understood.
Obviously String Theory IS correct, although misnamed (a secular humanist conspiracy perhaps?). As NOODLE Theory clearly unambiguously reveals, He has created the fundamental subatomic particles that form all matter in this universe in His own quivering image! You, me, the Earth, the stars…everything in the universe…are all built of trillions of tiny jiggling noodles, microscopic copies of our Divine Saucy Maker. Truly He is everywhere and in all things!

Now, when he pulls his motorcycle into a residential courtyard here, a dozen youngsters pounce before it comes to a stop, yanking six chipped skateboards with fading paint off the back. The children, most participating in a sport for the first time in their war-hardened lives, do not want to waste any time. Their skateboard park is a decrepit Soviet-style concrete fountain with deep fissures. The tangle of novice skaters resembles bumper cars more than X Games.

But Percovich has raised the money needed to build an 8,600-square-foot bubble to house the nonprofit Skateistan complex, and the Kabul Parks Authority has tentatively donated land. He is still waiting for official permission to begin the project. "I thought about a few things the other day - why I write the stuff that I do here, and whether or not what I say really has any merit in a media saturated world - and I discovered that this blog is fueled mainly by my own brand of righteous indignation.

For example, yesterday's monologue, Obama Grounds Citigroup Jet Purchase, was the second thing I wrote. The first piece I'd come up with just didn't do anything for me when I started trying to edit it. It didn't feel right. So I waited awhile, and sure enough, the Citigroup plane story came along, a story that was practically begging for me to rant about why a brand new 50 million dollar jet for a bank who was getting bailout funds was so wrong.

It was a story that hit me right in my gut.

But while I was reading the work of a fellow blogger, who was indulging in her own bit of indignation yesterday about Juan Williams recent comments about Michelle Obama, it hit me that there is a higher calling that awaits those of us in the blogosphere who write commentary about current events and politics."

Ha! I did a lot of checking on this when it first came out in December, Sarah Chayes and Michelle Obama have been working together on this for quite a while now.

Your NYT article reads like a manual from their discussions.
She musta denied Barack the nookie if he didn't fall in line, LOL

Hechicera's picture

The Moyer's clip is great. It confirms things I've read and been told.

But the NYT article, while stating we do need to stop supporting the corrupt regime, seems to then go off into left field.

If we a) come in and fight the Taliba b) support Karzai c) dump Karzai all while d) killing lots of Afghani's without any nation building, then e) leave ... we will be seem as just another Warlord ourselves. A fickle one at that.

I would also like to point out that almost all the Afghan interactions have been with the Pentagon and its (new and improved?) branches. Not the UN (its a US-led NATO thing), not the State Department, and precious few NGOs can function under the triple-burden of corrupt Afghans, corrupt US contractors and no UN umbrella. A NGO that has to pay double-bribes and work with the US military will have great difficulties in bringing their funding to bear on the problem (instead of someone's pockets) and little chance of gaining the support and trust of the population. Any NGO worker will explain why its a BAD IDEA (caps would be theirs) to be seen as part of the organization of an occupying military.

So, the impression of the US as just as corrupt, and a warlord-only is reinforced in many ways there.

Pressure to fix corruption, good, but with the goal being a faster military thumping then a fast withdrawl, and that's it, with no nation building? Oh great. One step forwards, two backward.

Jan. 27: Embattled Illinois governor Rod Blagojevich explains to MSNBC's Rachel Maddow that in spite of his political stunts and media tour he's not confident of the outcome of his trial in the Illinois Senate - though unlike Richard Nixon, he wants all of his tapes to be made public.

Out of time: Global Warming Is Irreversible, Study Says - http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?...
"People have imagined that if we stopped emitting carbon dioxide that the climate would go back to normal in 100 years or 200 years. What we're showing here is that's not right. It's essentially an irreversible change that will last for more than a thousand years," Solomon says.
But despite this grim prognosis, Solomon says this is not time to declare the problem hopeless and give up.
All the reports & studies that the Bush Crime Family covered up are starting to surface finally, after being held back Gestapo style.... We can still avert disaster by staying below 450 ppm....but we MUST do that...one planet, we don't get a do over....

GOP to oppose stimulus bill over tax cuts. Spending didn't get us into this mess; tax cuts did. Raise top tax rates! - http://finance.yahoo.com/news/House-Republica...
Lets reflect...shall we? Under Eisenhower, the rate was 91%....were there no millionaires or billionaires in the 50s?? Just checking, they seemed to make out pretty good back then with that rate, instead of the insane 15% rate that Bush gave them....
Its time for the middle class, those in poverty to stop subsidizing the top 1%s taxes.....they use more of the commons, their businesses use more of the commons, its time they paid for their gains...
Its also time to start enforcing the 35% corporate tax rates, Sherman Anti-trust act, Glass-Steagall, ending offshore tax shelters, and prosecute corporations that employ slave labor...

Blackwater Expanding Domestic Reach - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKgtcLhnPtE
From The Pap-Atack...Most people know the basic facts behind the Blackwater story. They may have read a few facts about how that mercenary organization was started by a phenomenally rich multimillionaire inheritance baby named Erik Prince. For decades, Prince’s daddy wooed all of his political friends by spreading millions of dollars around to conservative think-tanks and ultra-right religious infrastructures that helped shape the now floundering neo-con revolution.

Following controversy over the appointments of three of the four Senate seats vacated after the 2008 presidential election, Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., plans to introduce a constitutional amendment that would leave it up to voters -- and not the state governors -- to fill the empty seats. "When you don't use the idea of 'one person, one vote' it's an invitation to corruption, embarrassment or abuse," Feingold, who chairs the Senate Judiciary Subcommittee on the Constitution, told ABCNews.com. "It's unattractive and undemocratic."

I caught Blago's interview with the hot chick that comes on after Dobbs on CNN. The man is a raving lunatic, or close to it. What is that called...narcissus complex? The look on the interviewers face when he explained why he thought he was comparable to Ghandi or Mandela was hilarious. She couldn't believe that this guy was serious. Jeffery Toobin couldn't even begin to fathom why he is doing all that he is doing. Blago's little PR campaign is only serving to draw out the inevitable death of his political career and making things worse on himself. Being a citizen of Illinois all I can say is he not only embarrassing himself, but also The People of Illinois, whom he says it's all about and any future Governors and not about him. If he so concerned about Illinois, the best thing to do is just resign for God's sake. News flash...Blago isn't anymore liked by the People of Illinois than he is by the General Assembly. It seems he has more friends in the Senate, but not many. He is not only embarrassing himself, but the whole State even more. In the words of Bugs Bunny:

Whatta maroon.
