WikiPedia:

A postliterate society is a hypothetical society wherein multimedia technology has advanced to the point where literacy, the ability to read written words, is no longer necessary. Many advanced science-fiction societies are postliterate, for example in Dan Simmons' 2003 novel Ilium, and François Truffaut's film adaptation of Fahrenheit 451.

Postliterate is markedly different from preliterate. A preliterate society has not yet discovered how to read and write; a postliterate society has replaced the written word with an electronic oral culture, or some other means of communication. All information is either transmitted via sound or some other, more complex means. Postliteracy is sometimes considered a sign that a society is approaching the technological singularity.

In a postliterate society people can read words, but choose not to. They generally receive information in a visual form instead of a verbal form.

When will government of the people, by the politicians, for the corporations perish from this Earth?

Speaking of coding, when the hell is someone going to update these scripts so that when you log in, it returns you to exactly where you wanted to reply. I have to log in, then go back to the page, refresh it, and scroll through the comments and find the exact post I was looking to reply to.

Well the whole point of progressing computers to the "windowed" idea was so coders could have multiple "windows" open on screen, thus making their jobs easier. I mean, who the fuck wants to have a giant book next to them as reference when they can have onscreen help? Consumers jumped at the idea because suddenly you didn't have to remember commands anymore to work a computer. Don't be one of those Linux super dorks who looks back at the black and white screens of old as the pinnacle of human computational achievement, just because there's a whole slew of idiot consumers who use their computers for nothing else but browsing the net and downloading porn.

So, let's say that's the only possible definition of the word.

Wouldn't it be just as funny with Sarah Palin herself using the word deliberately to extol the virtues of illiteracy, and using it incorrectly?

Of course, then her followers would say she really did know the actual definition, and was just flaunting her vast technological knowledge, huh?

Can't we just tar and feather this lady already?

So there I was writing a response to some post I've long forgotten now, even though it was a mere 30 minutes ago. Along the way I took a trip into "faith-based initiative" la-la-land while looking for material to back up a statement I was about to snark off.

First, the Holy Grail of FBI: JC Vision, Inc, as promoted by Little Lord PissyPants Hisself. (note the *clever* word play in that company name)

"The power of the faith-based initiative, President Bush said, is in the stories. Consider, he said, JC Vision, a faith-based program in Hanesville, [sic] Ga., that helps the poor get home loans."

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?...

So I was intrigued and decided to see what this is all about.

"What is the cost of your service?
The services are FREE!!!!!!! With the exception of the pre-bankruptcy counseling. For more information call us at 912.xxx.xxxx"

The rest of the website is equally atrocious, and the disclaimer page is eye-opening.

http://www.jcvision.com/6101.html

Anyhow, after seeing how hard it is to squeeze a dime out of the NIH for research funding for cardiovascular disease or cancer, I find repugnant the idea that this sort of shat gets a green light for funding because "JC" is in the name. I can't see any other reason for the special treatment, and if they had to compete for grant funding with secular agencies, I suspect they wouldn't have withstood the competition. I need me a bottle of the Jesus Perfume(TM) to spray on all my grant proposals, I guess.

I took a little spin around the web in search of more information on this company and its founder, but quickly ran into the puke-worthy territory of abstinence-only "charities" schemeing to get their hands on government funding and such.

Anyhow, that's my annoyance for the evening. I'm going to go read a little "God Hates You, Hate Him Back" to lighten my mood.

katenh's picture

to print your grant requests on paper watermarked with the Jesus icon, or possibly the weeping Mary.

Because, like the post says, its the pictures that count.

Boobies and stuff might help also.

That is of course when you want to get funds from wingnuttia.

Brain Food's picture

I think the faith-based initiatives continue under the new and improved Jesus Perfume(TM) of the current administration. So, wingnuttia optional!

Perhaps if I dropped my toasted cheese sandwich strategically on the cover page?

I thought it looked like a scam, too. For a moment, I thought it might be a shell company, but it appears "legit," just painfully incompetent on several fronts.

Some people are really desperate in this suckonomy. Four times as many Ponzi schemes were unraveled in '09, compared to '08. Unlike Cheney the Dick, Obama cares about his buddies. China quickly adapts to the Western values of rendition without appeal and execution without a mental evaluation. Native Americans are slowly buying back their property, to the dismay of the cities cashing in on the tracts. R.I.P. Percy Sutton. Yet another economist besides Krugman claims we're in a mini-bubble.

This morning on morning joe, Pat Buchanan suggested we should have with held burn pain medication from the guy who tried to ignite his explosives, in order to get him to give information about how his plan came about. Sounds like Pat is still pushing torture to me.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Seriously's picture

All during the Bush years, all we heard from conservatives was "Clinton this, Clinton that... blah blah, all Clinton's fault." NOW, when Obama is clearly cleaning up Bush's mess, it's not allowed to put any blame on the Bush administration. Grrrrr....

pissed off patricia's picture

I'm Grrrrr-ing right along with ya.

Say what you mean. Mean what you say. But don't say it mean.

Alice X - Chomsky Nader's picture

Put all the blame there you can, together with the neo-liberal Clinton.

Unfortunately, Obama isn't cleaning much up.

Witness:

National Security State/Endless Detention/Civil Liberties

Increase of the Perpetual War Budget

Continuation of the Perpetual War

Continuation of the Bailout Nation, the Xmas Eve news dump of the increase (to infinity) of the bailout for the Fannie and Freddie is the latest.

The Corporate Welfare Protection Act for the Health Insurance Vampires and the Big Pharma Gangsters is another soon to be lead balloon for Obama to swing.

So your statement Obama is clearly cleaning up Bush's mess doesn't comport with the facts.

Albert Camus suggested and Howard Zinn remembered:

it is the job of thinking people not to be on the side of the executioners.

Obama's cruise missile attack in Yemen is potentially a war crime. All the more reason not to prosecute war criminals when you are going to join their ranks.

Yea, all your points make sense. I guess what I should say is that Obama is "supposed" to be cleaning it up.
