Flashback: Limbaugh Gets Pwned By Studio Audience

I found this clip this morning and thought I'd share it here at C&L. The clip is from 1990 when a much younger Rush Limbaugh got owned by the studio audience during his very brief career in television. The crowd eventually becomes so incensed by his nasty attacks on women that he can't get a word in edgewise and they are forced to clear the studio in order for Rush to actually finish the segment.

Rush has challenged President Obama to a debate, but only because he knows there isn't a hope in hell it will ever happen. He knows he wouldn't stand a chance, but that's not going to stop him from rallying his ignorant minions. He cares nothing for his party, this nation or its people, he's out for power, money and fame -- much like the party he now leads.

If you've ever wondered why cowards like Limbaugh, O'Reilly and those of their ilk never debate anyone of any substance, watching this clip will help you understand. When exposed to the average American, hate merchants and propagandists like Rush don't stand a chance.

el Rashbo hasn't changed much in the past twenty years and neither has the GOP. I wouldn't advise the president to lower himself to debate this idiot, but in my heart of hearts...oh, nevermind!

Obama should challenge Limbaugh to a 1/2 mile foot race...

Ya but Rush could die in the course of the race......

Actually that's a great idea...Obama should race Rush

You're such a cynic. I'm quite sure Rush and Bollo (yes Bollo)would still be doing this even without those multimillion dollar contracts.

rush was shoved down our throats when he couldn't buy a listener, they promoted him even though hated and clear channel gave him a national show before he ever turned a dime of profit

then clear channel put him on everywhere, twice in the same market, a few frequencies in the same market

his vitriol attracted the like and his followers grew from there

the man could have never ever had a career in a real market

He did introduce me to Gold's Medicated Powder. As a foot powder salesman he is one of the best.

he wouldn't know what to do. he'd soon realize he would be WAY over his head and would find the fastest excuse not to go thru with it.

ba-lee dat.

he only let's the dittoheads get through his screener. He can't have an honest debate with anybody that's smarter than him.

It was my understanding that it was THIS incident that frightened poor poor Fatboy from doing live shows without a pre screened audience.

One day somebody, who isn't a pacifist like me, is going to kick Rush all over his fat ass.

shown up to talk to anyone other than a pre-sceened group of diehard supporters.

Amen!

No other comment needed.

Bill Hicks Perfectly Describes Rush Limbaugh

the safety and solitude of the radio studio. He can just rattle his trap off with out being called on his bulls_ _ t.

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama is expected to sign an executive order on Monday reversing restrictions on federal funding of embryonic stem cell research.

There is no force in the universe that could make me listen to 10 seconds of that fat pompous asshole, let alone 10 minutes worth of his hateful bullshit.

Same here. I did watch about 2 minutes. It was back before "you all" (a lot of people) got brainwashed by the GOP. The good old days, when people spoke up (a tiny bit). Before the message was so controlled, and people had their own opinions.

Post 9/11, you all got chucked in a blender and became a paste of meaningless statistics. A puree of Americans: now conveniently sorted as "patriotic" and "unpatriotic" for ease of tracking.

.

.

Did Olbermann ever get to debate Bush?

.

.. handling a crowd like that. I despise Rush and what he has spawned. But he tried to engage these folks. I actually find his handling of the audience respectful and dignified. The shouters could have been heard all program had they been similarly dignified.

molly yard as mrs potato head?

Bill Maher Gets Pwned By Studio Audience
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5BJzEshMes

.

2-3 people on Maher's show yelled about 9-11. Rush had an entire audience against him.

Totally the same thing. You showed me.

Fuckwit.

Only thing worse than radcial right wing bible thumping fascists are radical left wing anarchy-coveting 9/11 Truthers.

:)

Yes

Go to the far extreme fringes of the left or right wing, all you find are nutcases

let me see f i've got this right. you believe every word of the "9/11 report", even though lee hamilton, max cleland and countless others say it was set up to fail?

and you're PROUD of yourself?

That you believe the right-left spectrum is that simple, and that you think people who question the official conspiracy theory of 9/11 are anarchy-coveting and nutcases really speaks for itself.

The only thing worse than a radical nutcase is an authoritarian follower who is too scared of thinking for himself to end up on somewhere "extreme" on someone elses definition of a political spectrum, and who's then being smug about it.

Question everything and think for yourself. And start by reexamining what you consider to be the political spectrum. Also maybe what you consider to be courage and patriotism. And maybe also what you consider to be nutcases. People who think for themselves "have to be nuts" because they don't conform the way authoritarian followers like you do, like the weaker, subservient dogs in a pack.

Not everyone agrees with the pundits.

HOWEVER.

Is Maher sitting before an empty audience?

Is Rush doing his shows before a studio audience?

Hardly.

...this is nothing like the Limbaugh show. In the case of Limbaugh, the audience was confronting him and his beliefs directly. With Maher, there were isolated nuts in the audience who were shouting things unrelated to Maher (and reality). Limbaugh went into the audience and invited someone to speak; Maher made it clear that the audience was not invited to offer opinions -- on anything.

rush has obviously always been a fat
delusional mother-f#cker all his life.
no wonder women find him disgusting.
i don't think there is a gay man either
that in their worst nightmares would
find him the least bit interesting.
someone might want to grease him up
after turning him over, but that would
be an oximoron don't you think?

I don't think there is a gay man either that in their worst nightmares would find him the least bit interesting.

Unfortunately, where there are white people, there are always right-wingers, and that goes for white gays, too.

The most right-wing person I've ever met (and I come from a doozy of a Southern family) was a gay white male coworker who advocated reintroducing slavery for Blacks, restoring apartheid in South Africa, imprisoning and sterilizing as many people of color as possible, actively opposing recycling (to the extent that he would remove paper from recycling bins, put it in the normal trash, and then pour coffee on it so it couldn't be recycled), firing people who spoke anything but English while on the job in the US (he tried to get two Iranian coworkers fired for just that), etc, etc. He was an avid fan of Rush Limbaugh, unsurprisingly, and was about as large as Limbaugh, too. He was working on a PhD in sociology and was such a bully that his bosses would cave to any complaint he made. The saddest thing is that he went to work for the Texas prison system in some capacity.

I know that coworker was pretty extreme, but in right-wing areas of the country that also have large gay populations, like Dallas, there are loads of gay right-wingers who probably love Rush.

Working on a Ph.D. in sociology? Now, THAT is alarming.

Yeah, at the University of Texas, and maybe elsewhere, criminal justice studies fall within the purview of the sociology department.

... I'm sure Ms. Maddow would oblige.

...but this shows you what Limbaugh thinks of free speech, that his speech is freer than the average American's, that he has a right to be heard over the other voices just because he has the wealth and power, and that he holds the ultimate right to ban other voices in order to have his be heard.

You are a coward, Rush.

Put that on the billboard.

...I don't think this shows what "Limbaugh thinks of free speech." I think it shows that he greatly overestimated his ability to dominate a discussion. He's a thoroughly loathsome creature and should expect that kind of reaction from people, but clearly he couldn't have a television show if every episode were dominated by people in the audience shouting at him.

Rush doesn't belong on television and he would fail completely if he had to defend his ideas against articulate, knowledgeable people. That's why his show is on radio and callers are screened. In the rare cases that intelligent opponents have gotten through the screener, Rush has not fared well. He has to control the microphone, because he's a huge, bloviating fool, not an intelligent, knowledgeable person. The fact that people choose to listen to him, and worse, idolize him, is a sign of how pathetic millions of Americans are.

However, in the case of the video clip, I don't think Limbaugh violated anyone's free speech. He just regained control the only way he could. He certainly wasn't going to quiet the audience down by the sheer magnificence of his existence.

I once knew someone who used to work on post-production of this show...apparently, they made the interns open the suspicious packages sent to El Rushbo (which were usually filled with poo)...

...driving through the boonies, where the only thing my radio would pick up was AM and that meant Limbaugh, I heard a show on which a scientist somehow managed to get through the screener. He took Limbaugh apart -- politely, quietly, and extremely effectively. Unlike this TV segment, where Limbaugh can claim the mantle of victim because members of the audience were so "rude" to him, the scientist destroyed Limbaugh's composure and credibility without ever raising his voice. He simply countered bloviating with science. Needless to say, it wasn't a fair fight. And it's something Limbaugh goes to great lengths to avoid, because he has no chance in that setting.

Personally, I would have no objection to Limbaugh facing verbal abuse whenever he appears in public. I find him despicable, and I'm quite sure (from having witnessed a couple of incidents in which he was completely unable to respond effectively to critics) that he could only be successful by appearing in a protected environment. In the case of the scientist, the destruction was profound and explains why Limbaugh's callers have to be carefully screened. The ideal situation would be to have Limbaugh take unscreened calls from experts in all of the fields about which he pontificates. His ignorance would be constantly on display, his inability to win any debate in which he didn't control the microphone, and the vacuity of his intellect would be out there for everyone to see/hear. It will never happen and because he makes a lot of money and has a devoted following of dittoheads (aka morons), he will always be taken seriously by the MSM.

Limbaugh is a buffoon and should be treated as such.

"Hi, I'm Rush Limbaugh! You're angry and I'll tell you who you can blame! Don't worry, don't worry, it's not yourself, it's never yourself."

between Comedian in that clip and Comedian today: he's somewhat slimmer today. Still a big fat idiot, though.

There was a point when Rush actually lost weight. Then he started ridiculing people larger than he was...

then karma kicked his ass.

Back in those early days, the brilliant Sen. Carl Levin (D-MI) demanded time on Rush's show. Levin so completed shredded Limbaugh, that after some confused stammering, Rush admitted that he was just an entertainer and a con-artist.

Limbaugh never again made the mistake of allowing an articulate progressive on his show.

When I saw Rush Limbaugh posing at the podium during applause at the CPAC conference, I was struck by the look in his eyes. It was the look of someone enjoying the fruits of immense power over his believers, a conceited, arrogant expression that reveals a diabolical mind.

It reminded me of another man who once stood at a podium and had the same look in his eyes, the same expression. That man spoke in Nuremburg, Germany in 1933. His name was Adolf Hitler.

I saw that same look in his eye and knew it was one I had seen before but didn't know where. Exactly right. Der Fuhrer!

This poses the question...why do people still listen to this buffoon?

It is great to have old proof of how spewing crap at people is easily refuted by logic.

Logic in 2012!

I am Frank Chow and I approved this message.

Was this back during the time when Jerry Springers show was on? The reason I ask that is because it was on one of his shows that I first saw people in the audience yelling out and being rude.

As for this appearance by Rush, it just reminded me of Jerry Springer's show. Hell, I don't blame these people for speaking up and out against Rush, like someone here said, he walked into the audience with a microphone so apparently he wanted to hear from them. He just didn't expect to hear from all of them at once, I guess.

I saw a Donahue show about gays, held in an arena, that went something like this. At least people talked back then. Donahue was great (no surprise) and the reich-wingers were unhinged. No politeness in that show, but it was good.

Now everyone is sorted into two camps, and not really talking.

He comes off looking pretty good to me. And I don't like his politics. But he's reasonable and rational, and the people in the audience are just yelling incoherently at him.

Complaining and acting like a victim just because he didn't get to do the actual bullying hardly makes him the more rational person. From my perspective, he just looked surprised and scared shitless.

I would pause to point out his statement about having never hurt anybody, nor, according to him, did he have blood on his hands. Many people caused a great deal of harm and mayhem with their words alone. Just because they never literally got their hands dirty does not let them off the hook and Rush needed to accept that this is what his audience was telling him.

Plus, his pathetic mewling about having never specifically attacked anyone in that audience:
if he can't see that he OFFENDED some of those people with things he already said, then I see this as more evidence that he is a cowardly, disingenuous boob who refuses to take responsibility for his hurtful invectives. It doesn't matter if he says them in an even, talk show voice.

"a bully gets bullied". Rush deserved every bit of it.

Imagine the same video with Rush being forbidden to talk back. Now that's really unfair, right? That's Rush's show every day.

For whatever it's worth: are you sure that this is from 1990? I distinctly remember when his show went on the air for the first time, around 1992.

it was the pat sajak show

for some reason, the suits at cbs thought having him guest was a brilliant idea

how unpopular he is with people of normal intellect.

How can someone who takes no pride in their appearance have such a superiority complex? i don't get it...

...who in the past couldn't help but make unkind observations about overweight women. We have, for the most part, been able to get him to stop doing that, but the fact is he used to do it.

It's a weird thing.

Actually, i am sure a psychologist or someone similarly educated could lay out a pretty decent theory for this behavior.

No wonder viagra boy , the preverted fat ass , has to go to the Dominican Republic to get his jollies .

i believe that it was during this appearance, when rush was doing a guest stint covering for pat sajak, that he decided never again to perform in front of an unscreened audience

he lost control in less than 2 seconds

he knew his presentation would be incindiary, but unlike his radio show, where he can mute caller and hang up on people...he forgot that he wouldnt be able to do that there...and the suits at cbs, let him hang himself

this is great tv

and of course, el druggo's premise is all wrong...calling for boycotts is legitimate free speech

It is abundantly clear and obvious to me he lacks any and all empathy for fellow human beings. He is a man reduced to primal instinct.

... I can't stand people who shout over somebody else. And I HATE people who are trying to silence somebody by shouting him or her down!

I believe that everyone has the right to express his/her opinion as long as this doesn't prevent someone else to express his/her opinion. Therefore I think that the appropriate action for those protesters would have been to let him speak or to leave the studio in protest.

That being said: I highly disagree with Rush on the abortion issue (and most other issues for that matter)

are

You Miss Manners?

No, but I value freedom of speech. And freedom of speech must not be supressed, not by violence, nor with threats, nor by shouting a person down!

Freedom of speech requires a certain amount of tolerance toward other peoples opinion. Even if it is a really stupid opinion.

I seriously think we should egg Mr Limbo on...not try to stop him from saying this kind of crap. Limbo's mouth is one of the best recruiting tools democrats have these days. the MORE he talks the more people move over to the D column when choosing their political affiliation.

He didn't clear the audience, what really happened was, he ATE every last one of them. What a fat fuck!

Anybody can sit there and projectile vomit vitriol and attract an audience. When you see a car wreck by the side of the road, what do you do?

If he actually had to debate someone who was the least bit skillful, he'd be toast.

Ski: The other difference also is that he had more hair...
Dnurse

I can't stand ross limburg. He's a self-important opinionated twerp and he's wrong about everything. That said, these protesters didn't make him look bad, they just disgraced themselves and allowed him to pose as the victimized conservative that he pretends to be. It was his show after all and they didn't engage him in debate, they just yelled inarticulately and allowed him to appear calm and reasonable. Which we all know he isn't. Shouters who shut people up don't win anybody over.

I've seen this clip several times over the years, and I absolutely love it! This is why Orca remains cloistered among his own kind. Can you imagine what would happen today, if he stepped out in on public sidewalk? People driving cars would veer off the street, and drive on the sidewalk to nail that bastard.

Rush learned quick that his way is completely wrong and he is the biggest POS in the World. Why else do you think he has a 28 sec tape delay on his program. Why do you think he does Oxycontin. Why do you think this man is the sickness of Amerika. Sad, sad individual.

I wonder if he got this response every time? Someone made the comment that people were more free to speak back then, and it made me remember Phil Donohue's show. I remember lively & heated discussions, but I also remember respect on both sides of the stage.

And where are the proud EX WIVES of El Rushbo?

You can see why Rush doesn't debate.

As middle class peon and as inexperienced at public debating and speaking as I am,
I hereby challenge Rush to a debate !

And Rush is allowed to use his entire brain. If he still knows how after he admittingly not using a half of his brain. He may bring His Coulter for help. He'd need it.

This reminds me of the story I read on here about Hannity getting pwned in a debate by the mayor of (I think) Salt Lake City, Utah. Someone correct me if i'm wrong.

It happened. It was not a proud moment for Salt Lake City, but then there are not a lot of proud moments in Salt Lake City.
I didn't see it, hear it, read it, or talk to anyone about it but I know it happened; sort of like my conception.

This clip from 1990 just proves what I have been saying for years and that is Rush WILL NOT appear in ANY public place in front of ANY group of people UNLESS of course the folks are CRAZY right wing lunatics! The look on the pig's face as the little lady in eye glasses lets fat boy know what a fuck wad he truly is! I noticed the look on his face as this lady told him,in no uncertain terms, what a piece of shit this drug addicted child molester really is! Rush actually looks terrified! And this jack ass has the nerve to challenge the POTUS to a debate?LAUGHABLE,JUST FUCKING LAUGHABLE!

Really? Tell that to the people from the Unitarian Church.

He can't stand to be confronted with the public's opinion. Live. Where they can stand up to him. He learned his lesson back then. He hasn't done this since then.

This shows what allowing honest debate into a forum produces. It show the utter pomposity of Limpballs, the fact that he had to clear the entire audience out to be able to pontificate about how he was abused by people who vociferously diagreed with his fascist views prove what a jerk he is.

He should be required to have an audience when he's spouting his nonsense, with enough people telling him he's a complete asshole to his face, he couldn't last 10 minutes in a real honest-to-God forum.

This was back when Rush was pretending to be reasonable by attempting to listen to people who feel differently than him and *then* spew his regressive vomit.

Now all he does is vomit.

This is why the conservative hacks all hang out on talk radio, they couldn't survive with a live audience.

Yes, Rush deserves a debate. But he has to first debate someone equal to his educational and IQ level, i.e. a high school graduate from Lousiana or a Ohio State U graduate!!!
