Spewing mucus everywhere.

"War is Peace; Freedom is Slavery; Ignorance is Strength."

Just because it's saturday morning doesn't mean you shouldn't wake up to report on how those Communist foreigners don't realize he's really a Nazi.

3p:

Its Friday Joe.

This has nothing to do with Obama. It has to do with how the organization picks their winner. Obama had two weeks unde3r his belt when he was nominated. Is he receiving it for the work he did in Chicago?

This is like homeland security handing out life-time achievement awards to their employees after the organization had only been around for one year.

If I were Obama I would decline it and say please consider me next year, there are thousands whose efforts have produced more peace than mine.

It's great to see, and it will drive the right wing crazy, which will be a lot of fun to watch, but he really hasn't accomplished much. There are many of people who are working right now and have been working for many years on a vast number of humanitarian and peace projects. We don't know who was nominated, but there are lots of people who have done more.

So who's right, the Nobel Committee or SNL? At the moment, SNL is closer to the truth regarding his real accomplishments. This just makes the Nobel Peace Prize look more like a beauty contest.

Nevertheless, congratulations Mr. President. I hope you do get around to accomplishing some of your lofty goals. (But just between you and me, as you extend and expand the war in Afghanistan, remember: they think you're a peacemaker.)

: )

Thanks sejanus.

They gave it too him for all the hope he engendered those first few weeks.

Plus the delicious Kool Aid helped and their were no visions of Brazilian ladies in thongs to warm the cold Norse winter.

:p

Never mind. They gave the prize to Kissinger several years ago. The NPP is a bankrupt organization and we should take all the awards with a grain of Kosher salt.

Perhaps he gave them TARP money. But that too is off thread. Citrus Kool Aid is good in the dark. It is still dark out there, isn't it?

: (

Yes. (kicks rock on the ground in front of him)

I commented that it's Friday, not Saturday, but another commenter said the same thing, which makes my comment redundant. Can I delete my comment or does a Site Monitor have to do that?

Thanks!

you can edit. I just clear the text and put "Delete" in its place. The sitemonitor will find. If someone commented on your post, however, you can't edit.

Peace prize crap. What a load of bull. This is not so much a criticism on Obama, but on the Nobel Peace prize organization. What criteria are they using?

Obama was nominated two weeks after his inauguration. What had/has he accomplished in the way of international peace? he actually stepped up the bombing in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and is quickly moving towards a war with Iran.

George W. Bush had already had a diplomatic crisis with China, been asleep at the wheel while America was attacked by terrorists, and actually initiated the war in Afghanistan.

:p

Shadow I'm not saying Bush should have won it.

Also the items you mentioned happened long after his first two weeks in office, which seems to be the nomination window for this organization.

No president of our war like nation should be nominated for that.

Do you guys really think the US is seen as the beacon of peace to the rest of the world?

... as a contrast.

And, seriously, if it's the absence of 'concrete achievement' that is the problem, then perhaps the world at large needs to take a long, hard look at itself - all nations and all peoples - to understand why we're reduced to handing out prizes for 'vision' and 'raising awareness.'

The rest of the world knows darn well if McCain won there would be more war.

Obama restarted the idea of diplomacy.

I imagine the Nobel Peace Prize was a no-brainer.

Name one other person who they could have picked?

(I can't think of another name)

:p

Two weeks into his presidency he received the nomination. There are thousands of people doing peaceful work right now.

:)

Can you find the list the Nobel committee worked from?

:p

Dude, I'm not on the committee the decision is not mine. There are thousand s of scientist who have made incredible advances in medicine and energy over the last year and I would hazard a guess that many people on that list actually had time in their positions to make accomplishments.

It's only been 9 months, its too soon to judge the president.

Name one you think is worthy of a prize for world peace and why you think they should get the prize.

Not medicine, not science, WORLD PEACE?

:p

Hey handy, many of the winners of the nobel prize in the past have not been politicians but scientists. Politicians tend to be the ones that start wars, not prevent them.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the Norwegian committee said in a statement.

"His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and attitudes that are shared by the majority of the world's population."

Asked why the prize had been awarded to Mr Obama less than a year after he took office, Nobel Committee head Thorbjoern Jagland said: "It was because we would like to support what he is trying to achieve".

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8298580.stm

:p

So the prize is an advance on the actual achievement.

Why not wait until after he is done?

Does Obama's 8 month record on human rights match the description of hope the commissioner gave? Hasn't he used military solutions in Pakistan and Afghanistan in wars which his own generals have said are not winnable?

Like i said I hope Obama sees the wisdom that the US military industrial complex needs to be tampered down and not built up, but do you see any sign of that?

Ha!

So now we shame him in to doing the right thing, GREAT!!!

(I love the sound of wingnut heads exploding so early in the morning)

"Anyone willing to take on cleaning up george bush's mess deserves the Nobel Peace Prize."

"There were a record 205 nominations for this year's peace prize. Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Chinese dissident Hu Jia had been among the favourites."

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/8298580.stm

Kind of slim pickin' Peace wise - eh?

:p$

No. There were more nominations this year than ever before, so that isn't slim pickens.

Is it slim pickens because the other two you cherry picked do not have popularity and global recognition?

)O(

Well if the Nobel Prize Committee wanted a no brainer wouldn't they have chosen sarah palin?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOKK8mAkiUI

no

That's be just "no brain"

Check out Democracy Now today (the show will be posted later on). They list several.

Obama said himself he doesn't deserve it, and he doesn't - not yet.

)O(

I dunno, I think conservatism is more a downer:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNO72aCnVr0

We could have given Bush the Nobel prize two weeks into his presidency because he stated during his campaign he was not into nation-building and did not believe the US should be the police of the world.

If your going to hand out awards based on two weeks of accomplishments, let's back track and award them to all previous president.

If you really think the rest of the world is that stooooopid . . . .

:p

What set Obama apart form Bush in his first two weeks of office?

I shouldn't even have to say this but of course I don't think Bush deserves the prize.

If you were on that committee and they nominated the ruler of the most militaristic country in the world while it is involved in two wars and occupations, wouldn't you have said "Let's wait and see on this guy."

the nomination - not the prize.

3p:

Obama has made some seriously questionable human rights decisions with regard to detentions and prosecution of war criminals. He has stepped up the rhetoric with Iran, stating that military action is not off the table. He has expanded our aggression in central Asia with bombing raids in Pakistan.

Now you can make an argument that some of those moves are in hopes of a peace later, but that is the same thing that is said about most wars when they are started.

tell the committee your reservations - I'm sure they'll take them under consideration.

lol

It just bums me out to see a bunch of progressively minded people rally around what has apparently become a hollow prize.

We roundly criticize Barack for his recent policy reversals, approving unlimited detentions, excusing Bush war crimes, etc, etc, but we instantly call him the man of the world when he gets a trophy in advance of accomplishments we all hope will happen.

From what I have read so far the official reasons are outreach to the Muslim world and work on nuclear proliferation.

By the way, anyone can nominate anyone for the Nobel Prize anytime they want. So the "he was nominated two weeks after he was inauguated" meme is meaningless.

... not correct. Remember, Rush Limbaugh tried to nominate his lard-ass for the Nobel Prize last year.

The proper procedure is outlined here.

No lard asses allowed!

"Zimbabwean Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and Chinese dissident Hu Jia"

Have done more for world peace but I never even heard their names.

FWIW

Tsvangirai has risked his life standing up to the thug Mugabe. He has the chance to free the people of Zimbabwe from the demoralized hell hole Mugabe has created.

)O(

Can we call him Obama Jr.?

How about Barry S. X?

I'm not on the committee - but I trust they weighed their decision.

Thanks!

:)

The Official 2009 Nobel Peace Prize Citation and Page for President Barack Obama - http://nobelprize.org/nobel_prizes/peace/laur...
Congratulations....now he needs to turn that goodwill into action....namely medicare for all, climate leglislation, climate treaty ratification, and getting out of the wars of choice...

Climate change - A national security challenge - http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/energy...
“You never have 100% certainty. If you wait till you have that, you’ll fail.” The evidence is unmistakable. We have hard choices before us. As the impact of irreversible climate change and the need for cheap energy increases, you’ll see more resource conflicts, more epidemics, and more deaths.
In short, life as we know it - for millions of people, including us - will become nastier, more brutish, and perhaps shorter. As an Iraq War veteran, I’ve dealt with the consequences of our energy needs in ways few have.
If the Dems don't include this information in the upcoming climate change battle...they are bigger 'framing' idiots than I think they are...

Um Extinctionists/Deniers/'skeptics' shove this in your tail pipe and smoke it: 92% of Americans Want Solar Power... Now! - http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/10/92-pe...
What's interesting is that strong support spanned political affiliation, as well as beat out other sources of energy seen as worthy of government support:
In terms of political party, 94% of Democrats, 93% of Independents, and 89% of Republicans supported more solar power. Furthermore, 77% of respondents thought that the federal government should make support for solar power a "major priority".
In other words....these idiots are truly peeing in the wind...

PEAK OIL....Um Extinctionists/Deniers/'skeptics' shove this in your tail pipe and smoke it as well: If Peak Oil is Now or in 2030, We're Still Woefully Unprepared - http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/10/peak-...
We Should've Been Preparing for at Least a Decade: Report author Steve Sorrell notes that the difference between the most pessimistic and optimistic scenarios -- developed after reviewing more than 500 other studies on the subject, in should be noted -- is just 15 or 20 years. Not enough time to fully replace oil with alternatives.

EU, US screwing up climate talks in Bangkok - http://www.desmogblog.com/eu-us-screwing-clim...
With only one week of negotiations left before the big show in Copenhagen, developed countries - led by the United States and the European Union - continue to waffle on the most important issues. This lack of action has polarized developed and developing nations at a time when consensus should be building.
We have to 'get it' soon that this is a global problem, if we don't help the rest of the world, of which we reside, then this will not work....

NUCLEAR IS NOT AN OPTION....The Old Boy Club is stupid: Senate Dems Opening to Nuclear as Path to GOP Support for Climate Bill - http://www.nytimes.com/cwire/2009/10/07/07cli...
Salon.com: "In fact, from 2000 through October 2007, nuclear power plant construction costs -- mainly materials, labor and engineering -- have gone up 185 percent! That means a nuclear power plant that would have cost $4 billion to build in 2000 would have cost more than $11 billion to build last October."
FACT: useful life of a nuclear reactor THAT IS DEPENDENT ON FINITE SOURCES OF URANIUM = 30-40 years FACT: Time to DECOMMISION a nuclear plant = 150 years It costs about $11 Billion to build, 1.5-2 Billion to run per year (30-40yrs), then you have to double the workforce when its time to decommission = 3 to 4 billion for 150 years....umm....do we need a Fifth Grader for this????
Anyone else that can't see that...is out of their flipping skull.... Come on 'fiscal con-servatives'... And the Dems are stupid if they 'have to' do this to get even one moron republican denier to 'say' they'll 'sign' the bill...which they won't...because Rush Limbo & Glenn 'Happy Feet' Beck don't like it...

Honestly....if the headline had stated 'right wingnut pundit denounces his brain or lack thereof' would any of us batted an eyelash???

second guess all they like but just as Beck was on the cover of TIME the prize was awarded by a process.

Congratulation Obama!

Also a feather in the cap of our country.

Be patriotic and happy!

:p?

OK kids the little league game just started and its only the second inning, but were going to hand out some trophies to the players we think will have a good rest of the game.

Grumpy Gus!

:p

Yes I just couldn't sleep for some reason. I didn't know what it was until I turned on the computer and there it was: a mis-rewarded peace prize come to ruin my day.

But that's OK. I'm going to drive through Oregon to Washington today and that will make it all better.

Unless you nominate the Nobel Committee for Assclown of the week or want to claim you are posting as a Nattering Nabob of Obamaism.

It those damn Democratic Presidents who keep getting that damn Peace award.
Just who do they think they are?
That damn Peace Prize is worthless. You don't get any money with it.
No prestige. Nuthin.
It just a pawn shop trophy.
Those guys. Wilson, Carter and now Obama.
Hell, next thing ya know they'll give one to Al Gore for trying to convince people that the world is cooling down.
Parka?

I think this award is premature.
Although it's a nice gesture by the committee.
It's not appropriate. He hasn't done enough yet.
But this does show how much these people like him and what they expect of him.
So, in a way, this is a good thing. These people have asked Obama to try to bring about peace. Just a little more pressure. And that's a good thing.

...

The award appeared to be a slap at Bush from a committee that harshly criticized Obama's predecessor for his largely unilateral military action in the wake of the Sept. 11 terror attacks. The Nobel committee praised Obama's creation of "a new climate in international politics" and said he had returned multilateral diplomacy and institutions like the U.N. to the center of the world stage.

"You have to remember that the world has been in a pretty dangerous phase," Jagland said. "And anybody who can contribute to getting the world out of this situation deserves a Nobel Peace Prize."

Unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which are awarded by Swedish institutions, the peace prize is given out by a five-member committee elected by the Norwegian Parliament. Like the Parliament, the committee has a leftist slant, with three members elected by left-of-center parties. Jagland said the decision to honor Obama was unanimous.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/09/obam...

:p

The award shouldn't be used to send a message to someone else. it is supposed to be based on accomplishments.

I'm not as good with words as I used to be, but let me paste this response from someone outside of our country to contribute a little more perspective.

"Let me, as a Norwegian, say that I am profoundly ashamed of the decision of the Norwegian committee.

"I think this is just a trick to get a sitting american president to visit Norway. This is a suck-up of ridiculous proportions, and the once-relevant peace prize has been reduced to a simple political tool of inner Norwegian domestic affairs.

<p>The prize should be given to people who stand in the front line against violation of human rights. People who risk their life every day for the cause. It's them that really need the support of a prize like this."

The Nobel preize went to Arafat and the other guy because they fixed the Israeli Palestinian problem?

lol

:p

This person's argument was that there have been terrible people nominated for it before and it has long been a joke. If you want to read a better perspective on the story with comments from both sides and many of them from Norwegians, go here.

If Curty and Ricky are that upset...imagine the Rightards.

Pass the popcorn, please

:p

That's part of the reason I'm pissed is the rights will have an argument that he should not have won the prize and it will be difficult to defend.

I shouldn't speak for ricky but I don't think he's upset. You're misreading his cryptography.

[passes floridiot a bong hit instead of popcorn because it is healthier]

:D

This committee just blew up more right wing heads than Nobel's invention could have on its own.

But this is a bad kind of blow up ricky.

Conservative: Why did they give the peace prize to Obama when he didn't deserve it.

Progressive: I don't know that was pretty fucked up.

Conservative: Why did they give the peace prize to Obama when he didn't deserve it.

Progressive: Why do you applaud when Americans lose and complain when they win? Are you another corporate communist America hater or do you just repeat everything Politburo puppetteers like Rush tell you to?

:p

Ricky the progressive you quoted was on blue kool aid and takes pride in fake compliments. The NPP was considering Blair and Bush for the prize. You shouldn't take pride in all of America's 'wins'. (ie: Mission Acomplished-ish)

Progressives who speak to sputtering conservatives must speak their language.

Dittohead: But, but, but he did nothing to deserve it. I don't get it?!!?

Progressive: What else is new?

:p

I don't understand. Because the conservatives are against it, it is defensible as a good decision?

I don't care what the conservatives feel on this. I had a gut reaction and I looked a very eclectic thread somewhere else with a lot of opinions and very few could support the decision of the NPP. I haven't looked at any of the news sites to even see how the headline is worded, other than the npp.org site.

You obviously have not mastered the proper popcorn recipe. Still messing with brownies?

:p

The kernels stick in my teeth, but the THC sticks in my mind.

first, young feller.

:pO

Must be a BIG joint!

unpopped Kernels before you microwave. Takes special paper, though.

.

bozo. (much to my chagrin I mus try and type some of those silly smiling symbols...damn, broke a nail.)

:p

LMAORFL (first time i ever typed that, jeez im old)

The plot thickens. Would any of you trust an organization that nominated these two for the prize?

Bush and Blair nominated for NPP by Norwegian politician.

at you stooping to acronyms. Hope you don't wreck your car on that long drive. You're already cutting corners.

No I have hands-free C&L premium on my i-phone (susie turned me on to it). That's why I'm so loquacious this morning. I don't even have to type anymore.

I always prefer my oral hands-free...

3p:

There's an app for that.

It's the civilized world's way of saying

"Thanks for not electing Grampa Death and Bible Spice!"

I have spoken.

They are saying thanks for the 22nd Amendment.

Welcome Back to Pottersville has just obtained a draft of Barack Obama's acceptance speech for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Just saw the link to my place. Thanks again, Mike. The check's in the mail.

So that's how the disingenuous evolved. Talk about what [Ailes] ya...
Thanks Mike

Greenwald also covered the photos issue. It's a shameful move, and dangerous. The photos should be released.

As for the painting issue - conservative idiocy on the arts annoys me than some of their other idiocy. Plus, they've made hostility toward the arts, arts funding and education a central tenet. It's sad, but also annoying and destructive.
