(h/t Jesse)

Probably a good idea to study your opponent's stance when you plan to attack him on it in front of millions of potential viewers. Otherwise you end up like Grampy McCrankypants with his total deer-in-the-headlight look when Obama set him straight:

Obama: I'm happy to talk to you, Joe, too, if you're out there. Here is your fine: Zero.

McCain interrupts: Zero??

Obama: Zero. You won't pay a fine because as I said in our last debate, and I'll repeat John, I exempt small businesses from the requirement for large businesses that can afford to provide health care to their employees who are not doing it. I exempt small businesses from having to pay into a kitty...

FTW!
Me for frist??

Wow... how often could they bring up Joe The Plumber tonight? Joes going to be the most in demand plumber in town. TV Shows, movies, a video games based on plumbers... who knows maybe even a clothing line...
oh wait... that one is already out there. Check out the Joe the Plumber Shirt here http://www.cafepress.com/yourthought/6081355

What was up with that? The part at the end where McCain was cackling snidely about You're rich, Joe over and over. Were we supposed to glean some deeper wisdom from that, or was it some kind of inside joke?

You'd think they'd both realize that the Joe the Plumber crap is just irritating to the viewer. It's maybe one step above Joe Sixpack. Bleh. And keep the touching personalized anecdotes to yourselves. It comes off phony.

a video games based on plumbers...

It's called Super Mario Bros.

I like how they incorporated the Obama logo into the shirts.

He was shocked...shocked! Lol.

wha?

jon stewart is going to have a field day with this!!!

:<[)

Yes, definitely a "HUH?" moment for McAncient.

You could actually hear the "THUD" as his jaw hit the table. Obviously, he wasn't briefed on this point, and I'm sure somebody's ass in his campaign got ripped later on.

It was Beautiful!

Nice video, feather weight music.

Yeah money always moves upward.

Take Sarah with him for better bankability.

The Chris Farleys of the Rich and Famous

Hey John we got a cheapo. $20,000 to show up for 30 minutes. $30,000 for you and Palin. All expenses and rider covered.

Book It?

With Faux News.

Or was it ESPN Sports Center?

Anyhow....

McReptile in the headlights look.

Yeah, "zero" you loser. Obama even made an ad out of his bit on the healthcare from that last debate. MkKKain's too busy hangin out at his KKK rallies to be aware of anything else.

ZERO he's thinking, why it's almost as good as the socialized health care I've gotten MY WHOLE LIFE!

Lol!

I can't think of a more apt description of McCain's performance in this debate than that supplied by H.L. Mencken: "His distinguishing mark is the fact that he always attacks his opponents, not only with all arms, but also with snorts and objurgations—that he is always filled with moral indignation—that he is incapable of imagining honor in an antagonist, and hence incapable of honor himself." I found the snorts particularly offensive.

Well said. David Gregory is fixated on McCain got off a "good" line. That is all he saw.

These people are morons.

They are paid to impersonate morons.

he misses the tire swing at sedona.

How can people look at the credentials of both of these men and still support McPOW?

Ha- too funny. This clip reminds me of the Simpsons episode where Bart zeros in on the exact moment when Lisa breaks Ralphs heart. You can zero in on the precise moment when Grandpa realizes he's pissing straight into the wind.

"Hey! How about that Sarah Palin? HAAAH?
Haaaaaaaaaaaah?!?!?! HAAAAA????"

I think Obama copped out on his analysis of Sarah Palin's qualifications to become POTUS compared to Joe Biden.

He was WAAAYYY too kind to her, IMO.

... Obama will have no regrets when this campaign is over. Besides, sometimes political lives are long. He may come across Palin again sometime and at least HE won't have to apologize. She might have to (and probably won't).

Yes, Sarah Palin said, she has nothing to lose...

So true.

agree. i was hoping he would say something about the finding of abuse of power and linking her to bush and cheney.

Sounds great to me!

Obama/Biden - 4 McCain/Palin - 0

LOL

Guess who is going to be out the back throwing chairs?

the best moment of the debate.

Yes, zero. Like how much money you'd have if you stuck with your first wife, asshole.

The best comment ever!!

Classic debate mistake. Don't ask questions you don't know the answer to! And the medium of television really exposes how unconfortable McCain is, doesn't it? He squirms, he gets flustered, and his attempts at smiling are painful to witness.

Palin/Plumber 2012!

Is that Larry Flynt's new porn flick?

This is a little off topic, but I just noticed this. I am in the NJ and Philadelphia market, and I just noticed that every republican running for congress or local office does not mention party affiliation in their ads. Upon further research their wbesites barely mention their party as well. This has to be a good sign for democrats in 3 weeks. Has anyone else noticed this?

... the reich-wing Repubs up there aren't using "Republican" in their campaign literature. They're using "GOP," as if that's less toxic a brand name.

Gotta love it.

Party of Lincoln? Uh, not anymore. Not since, oh, 1896 or thereabouts ...

I heard about this. They don't mention republican at all because of the stigma. They will use the phrase GOP because the stupid that vote for them don't know what it means. True story.

yes. I heard that several Republics[sic] in Oregon (I think) were hiding their party affiliation by doing exactly what you are talking about. They are worms in every respect and now they are being deceitful about their party affiliation. Figures.

btw, C&L:
I love y'all, but this new format is making making me insane. It even crashed my browser once.
If it's ok, I am voting for the old format. (maybe I am just a creature of habit)

Many ads across the board don't mention affiliation, but for republicans it's literally 100%.

For anyone who's confused, listen for "[opponent] wants to raise your taxes". If you hear that, it's a republican ad. If you don't, it's democratic.

i can personally testify to that. I was handed a flyer with no party affiliation. I had to show it to my buddy for him to believe me.

He had no idea what his health care plan was going to propose. He threw it together.

and nothing for joe the plumber from mcstain.

Joe the plumber is not even licensed , made about 40,000 and has a tax lein for $11,000.Guess joe enjoyed his 15 minutes of fame but I loved when Obama said Joe's taxes would be zero and McCain about dropped his teeth, that look was so telling of his whole campaign, just put crap out there and hope some of it sticks. He looks older and crankier at each debate, he doesn't have the temperment to be in charge. Please, everyone get out and VOTE, don't take anything for granted, encourage everyone u know to VOTE!

I love it how Solledad is getting so flustered that the focus group isn't going with the Bullshit the partisan analysts are barfing.

I gotta share this. Our son, Kris, is in Troops to Teachers and has been working to get his teaching certificate. 10 seconds after McCain said that troops should be allowed to teach without having to get that certificate, the phone rang and it was Kris. His comment was "Gee, I wonder why they want us to a teaching certificate - maybe it is so that they can teach us how to teach!!!

Randy just mentioned that while he was in the Navy, he really knew his subject (electronics) but when the Navy wanted him to be an instructor, he was sent to instructor's school to learn how to instruct.

Maybe McCain never had to teach anything.

... it is safe to assume that McCain never had to learn anything either.

he never had to work hard for anything either. he got into the navy because of his father and grandfather. he got into politics because of his father in law. he is enjoying a life of luxury because of his wife. he relies on aides to do the reading and thinking for him.

may i recommend the rolling stone article on mccain as further reading?

make believe maverick http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/233169...

obama gave mccain his answer regarding the the mandate penalty. mccain was off on purpose regarding his
healthcare proposal, he said 5k tax credit that's for an average family. for individuals it's 2.5k. mccain likes
to throw that 5k out their. he said average cost of family healthcare 5800.00 that's for an individual. for an
average family it's about 12,500.00.
obama wants to to increase the size of the PAYING pool. this will bring down the cost. the people that use
the healthcare system but can't pay increase the cost to the paying pool.....essentially a TAX. several non
bias groups have looked at the plans and found that mccain's plan won't work. take a look at the small
business association(s).
mccain also said pt. medical records are online.........they're computerized.

Funniest comment I saw from the liveblog...

McCain was blinking so much - I think he was spelling in MorseCode: "H E L P M E !"

it's called S-O-S

SOS

Everything about McCain is SOS...SSDD...and WTF?? :D

It was more like he was going to jump over the table and gut him like a deer. He looked like the angry desperate man he is.

Whacked... PWNeD!

Anybody else have a hard time finding the WIN/LOSE polls at the various news sites? So frustrating! I only ever find them by accident.

I'm disappointed Obama didn't mention, even in passing, Palin's violation of ethics laws and how that certainly doesn't set the right tone for a future VP.

I also loved how McCain threw Bush (and hence his own Party) under the bus.

He does not have to and it is not his job.

Try to get this:

Obama is running for President of the United States, not Gossip Columnist of the Wallissa Picky Nose. It is beneath the President to engage in such trivial pursuits.

McCain was saying Palin would clean up corruption. It is not being a "gossip columnist" to prove conclusively to the audience that your opponent is lying right in front of them, and has no judgment either.

But everybody knows it, even the Republicans who are in denial. You do not remain Presidential while concentrating on minor points and Palin is indeed a minor point even if she is a big deal for the rabid right.

I think, after this election, John McCain could get a gig as the new spokesman for Quaker Oats, 'cause it looks like he had 'em today!

President Obama is going to be AWESOME.

And not socialist.

But not fascist, either, you right-wing lurkers!

It looks like McCain threw up in his mouth a little bit at the end of that clip.

Katie Couric has THE PLUMBER on cbsnews.com

Ratings must be pretty bad.

thank you to both sen. obama and sen. mccain.
already in the last 30 minutes i have been getting non-stop calls.
my business is booked all the way into 2009.

no new information for this voter
mccain could have done worse - let's face it, the guy's a classic senator & knows what it takes to make sausage palatable
career senators are NOT ambassadors - they're street fighters
our man Obama played smooth operator tonight more than usual, because he could
not a whole lot more for the guy to do than practice looking presidential

I just can not believe anybody can associate theirs ideas with Mr McCain.
I am so foreign to his points and I have 30 years old daughter! She things he is an alien! Her grand pa is more modern then this! Hey we just want to be treated with dignity! Can we?

Yea...
Good one "big hairy testicles." I see how your foreign to his points, you can't even speak english. "30 years old daughter?" "She things he is an alien?" To speak about Presidential Canidates and post commments, please have to decency to write in english. It looks like the only alien or point that is foreign is YOU. What does dignity have to do with John McCain. Ill tell you this much.... After 7 years in the military I know it takes a great man to do what he has done.
We speak of change and reform with Obama. What the hell has he changed. Sure, he is a great orator and can gather a crowd. Well, the crowd I think he gathers seems to be those same who always jump on the band wagon because of either similarities. Bush may not have done everything right but we cant go voting for Obama just because he sounds good. We must actually delve into his track record - which by the way he has none. We must also go on what kind of person he is - Why is he covering up his college years and his senior thesis? What is it with so many of his acquaintances or ties to radicals like Ayers, Rev Wright, etc... It seems to me there is somethign more to ask ourselves.

He may be a great president, but can we really afford to take the chance when we have so little to go on. Its funny how Americans are so gullable. John McCain may or may not be the better choice. That is not my point. My point is how can we simply believe a man like Obama, when we have nothing to go on???????????????

Lets be true Americans and stand by our country whether strong or weak - and furthermore get involved and really understand the points of view and political leaders before we jump on the bandwagon

500?

Josephine the Plumber.

For all intensive purposes it was a deer in the head lice moment.

http://digg.com/2008_us_elections/John_McCain...

Sounds like The Plumber is going for McCain....

Hey, Remember Nixon's Plumbers??

John should be careful. Sarah might mistake him for game.

Ooopppssss, Joe The Plumber just said Obama tap danced almost as good as Sammy Davis Jr.

Joe The Racist Plumber...?

Please, people in the media, bring this out! People who are dying and in need of a lifesaving transplant won't be able to get one if they aren't rich enough to afford a "Cadillac" health insurance plan under a McLame administration. He lumped that lifesaving proceedure in with cosmetic surgery!!! WTF?!?

tell him to support the Obama policies...cause his retirement fund is in danger.

A McCain quote that caught my ear tonight:

"Whenever you have a rally of 10,000 people, you're going to have some fringe people." (...) "Only the most decent, patriotic people attend my rallies..."

After having just watched this video on C&L of the nasty comments from *the majority* of McCain rally attendees, that little comment by McCain definitely caught my attention.

Did McCain call Palin a "Breast of fresh Ayer"?

I almost felt sorry for McCain when I saw that silly look on his face.

Then I reminded myself how terrifying it would be to have him and Caribou Barbie in the White House.

Which one of Palin's children has autism? Must have missed that when she told it.

and mccain keeps on saying that palin knows better than most about special needs children. huh? her baby is just 6 months old.

Here, let me fix that for you. :)

Let's hope the old saying "Nice guys finish last" does not apply here.

Would the large companies who do not pay for employee healthcare, companies that Obama wishes that would pay happen to be Wal Mart and the like?

Between the creepy non-contextual smiling and the insane blinking McCain failed. The American public is not capable of digesting anything more substantive than that.

just fine, thank you very much. Tell ME,please waht I don't know all knowing poobah

fulthy fick. tell me what I can't understand

After all the debates it is apparent that what seems to sway voters the most is not the specifics of a candidates stand on a given issue but that he carries himself with a calm sober professional demeanor. That a candidate APPEARS presidential. That is the prevailing winning characteristic of a given debate.

Since the American MSM has devolved to merely presenting each side without honest contextual analysis of the facts, and frankly considering the complexity of the issues at stake, namely economics which even doctoral professors on the subject get wrong as often as they get right, I stand by my original assertion its more than the American public can digest.

Follow me here because it gets tricky: You are an individual. My assertion, a generalization about the public has nothing to do with you. So your refutation of my generalization based on the unproven statement of your specific case is meaningless.

I get it. Since I'm a voter i don't count. Loser

No, you're a voter AND you don't count. They are unrelated.

Though I'm sure I'll regret it I have to ask, re-reading my original post, what has made you so angry?

Oh My good friend,You have made very happy. Not angry at all. Your presumptions show your lack of 'people skills'. You need to get laid. And soon.

Wouldn't take much to make you happy. A ball of string? A shiny object perhaps dangled in front of you?

Now, who the #@$@#$ told the troll what the answer to 2+2 was?

LMAO. On a roll again!

Just to show the observers how easy it is to dismiss their arguments.

Haha!

Makes me wonder how it went over if only listened too, as My body keeps reminding me, I was 9 when watching Nixon Kennedy debate, and those who listened thought Nixon won, those who watched gave it to Kennedy.

I was 5 at that time. Where's filthy when You need Him?

As I watched it in HD I wondered what impact that would have given that HD is not nearly as kind to the human face as regular TV is.

a loser. TV will make or break an election in 2008. Ummm. How are you on this thread? Perhaps by morris code?

Are you aware I was acknowledging the impact of TV on the election, and wondering how that impact might be augmented by HD?

What a Retard!
He threw the election while attempting to play to the base that would vote for him anyway (but at least he got his shots in ....wtf!).

It looked like OLD John got some last minute instructions from F**ktard Sean Hannazi on how to conduct himself at the debate.
McStain made a complete ass of himself with his arrogant, condescending behavior. He rolled his eyes, Interrupted Obama repeatedly, made sarcastic remarks and also looked very uncomfortable.
About the only thing he didn't do was call Obama "boy" (but he wanted to!).
The Ayers dialogue basically sank McStain. He came across like a pit bull (Palin would have been proud!) But it didn't stick and it gave Obama a chance to put it to bed on national tv in front of 60 million viewers. Nice going McStain!

Obama on the other hand looked and acted presidential. He laid out his plans with a calm demeanor and literally took McStains arguments apart quite easily.

How did the Repugs ever pick this Idiot guy for their candidate? WTF?

when McCain wakes up tomorrow he won't have to worry about that pesky campaign thing anymore!

It'll be over for him!

Barry killed!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zRqcfqiXCX0&eurl

What is in the left side of McCain's face? Is he going to spit out Bin Laden before the election?

Aw, jeez, he looks as if he's going to burst into tears there.

My favorite moment was in McCain's closing statement, when he said (but then corrected himself immediately, darn it), "We have to make health care avoidable -- affordable!"

I also liked when Obama named several of the Republicans who were on that board with him and Bill Ayers -- the president of the U of I, the head of the Chicago Tribune, et al.

mccant diin't know what hit him.

It's like being at Moe's Bar from The Simpsons:

Obama: I'm happy to talk to you, Joe, too, if you're out there. Here is your fine: Zero.

MoeCain: Waaaaaaaa!?

Well, it was no game changer for McCain, so I guess it's back to the old grind of lies, smear, hate, lies, smear, hate, lies, smear, hate, etc

He can do whatever he wants, he lost. It is over in November.

Poor guy is going to end up shuffling around his house for the rest of his life. All 13 of them.

Folks, I don't know if any else has noticed this or not, but FOX is now sucking up to Obama. I think they know that by continuing to bash him 3 weeks before the election will hurt FOX News big time. I can see Murdoch calling his dogs off for the sake of the FOX News organization.

OMG, Hannity is yapping and showing the same denial as always. It's over everyone on FOX realizes it except Hannity. Hannity is a Fricken Moron!!

buy (risk) a business in this economy when he can rake in $250,000 on his own if he hustles and does good work?

joe wants to hire illegal cheap labor so he can take a load off. i guess joe agrees with mccain he wants the
republican version of the american dream. hire cheap illegal labor and offer NO benefits. let the tax payers
take care of the benefits.

what a hoot. 'Hocky Moms' OK On 3 One two three ACCCCCK

I'm knee deep in cr@p, and even I thought McC stunk.

Watching McCain was good for a laugh and at least it took my mind off of the overseas markets for a bit. (I would not advise looking at any financial news for the next couple of weeks, Nikkei is on track to make history and not in a good way.) If you bought into the sucker rally, well, good luck sucker!

I think the debate question that I would really want to know the answer to is where the candidates are putting their money right now. That will show their judgement and ability to handle a crisis!

This feels like a scorched earth policy by the Republicans -- McCain doesn't have a chance, so destroy the country before Obama can take over.

Wow. David Brooks just said some amazing, positive comments about Obama on Charlie Rose.

It's time for McCain/Palin to try to save the Republican incumbents in Congress this race is O-V-E-R.

Fine'.

Done.

Next up:

Sarah Palin off to Ohio to proclaim how nice it is to be in the Tarheel state!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgQ67GGAZR0

Yea, we get it. Ypu're an idiot.

I wonder if Joe the Plumber has any money left to buy that plumbing business. If he does he should probably wait to buy it at auction.

Of course the guy got an incredible amount of free advertising. I wonder if he is any good?

Joe the plumber seems to have just told the press that Obama is not the problem.

You've probably already heard this, but it's good news: "undecideds."

http://tpmelectioncentral.talkingpointsmemo.com/

They saw what we saw.

I'm so glad for instant polling in this matter. :)

Eyes.

Who knew?

They work for almost everybody.

Well, they're supposed to. Your qualification--"almost"--is apt.

It's hard watching those debates under a lot of tension. But what made an impression on me the most is the unsportsmanlike (????a better word???) behavior that McCain was exhibiting. I'm with the thoughts of others I've heard on television, that McCain simply didn't act Presidential. In fact, he looked like he was a spoiled brat who wasn't getting his way.

In a nutshell, McPOW was acting in a histronic manner.

I mean, my goodness, if he acts this way with Mr. Obama, how is he going to deal with world leaders? Is he going to roll his eyes and snort at them too?

That is pretty much the point.

I know, I was a nervous wreck.

I watched it at Obama HQ in Salem, Oregon (with about 60 of my new closest friends). : )

When it was done, we basically all turned to each other and asked, "How could anyone watch this debate and not see that Obama is both more qualified and more admirable--both in the things he said, and in his mannerisms."

I was worried when I was driving home--most of NPR was calling it for McCain because, like Palin, "the bar was lower." What has happened to NPR...that's the third time during these debates they've done this. Someone needs to get over their complex about being accused of being "lib'ruls."

The main point is also that Mr. Obama acted with considerable calm under extreme circumstances. He ought to be admired for that.

McPOW just demonstrated under those same circumstances that he couldn't handle it. He was practically about to blow at every moment. Plus, he can't remain calm to save his life.

If people can't see the dichotomy there, then I don't know what they were watching.

Mr. Obama handled himself well. I think, if he wins, he's going to be a voice of calm in our tumultuous times as a nation.

but your points remain salient.

I appreciate your words. Those are some of the impressions that I had gotten while commenting on and watching the debate.

Now, I can watch again later without being on pins and needles.

:)

to quote/paraphrase 2 conservatives describing obama: he has a first class mind. mccain and palin are retards. no contest.

Once again!

THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK!!!!

I have to go vote now. :)

Mighty nice of you O. Thanks. I've some clicking to do.

All of the poll results are between 63% and 89% for Obama except for the Drudge Report. He got 25%.

Whodathunkit?

I've done some clicking as well. I'm quite please with the Time poll (rolling the mouse over the different states participating in the poll), myself.

Thanks for compiling that. I voted in a pile of them. Only Drudge shows McLiar as winning.

i voted 15 times at least

Who Won The Last Debate? Obama Dominates By Largest Margins Yet

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/15/who-...

the election is over. Now it's for the Thugs to decide.

Would the large companies who do not pay for employee healthcare, companies that Obama wishes that would pay happen to be Wal Mart and the like?

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some tree-hugging liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance -- now Joe gets it, too.

He prepares his morning breakfast: bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girly-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air.

He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some lazy liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union.

If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment checks because some stupid liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FSLIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some elitist liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the taxpayer funded roads.

He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans.

The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, cheese-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved conservatives have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

a shorter version- I was born. Reagon was president. My parents died. I lost my job. I recovered.

Perfect.
