In 1977, I was working as a rock journalist and the CBS Records press department sent me to London to check out this new band, The Clash. The higher-ups at Epic weren't too thrilled with them-- and, in fact, didn't even release the first album-- but the woman who ran the press department was in love with the band and she put up the dough for me to stay there for 2 weeks. I went on tour with them and hung out with them and became pretty good friends with all four of 'em.

After the first concert they were my favorite band in the world. The song, "Complete Control" from their self-titled album, was the one they played for me in their rehearsal studio in Ladbroke Grove, before they had recorded it. It became the theme song for my San Francisco radio show.
