Everybody's favorite xenophobe Pat Buchanan was on Meet The Press this morning with dire predictions for this country. Was he worried about a Constitutional crisis that makes Watergate pale in comparison? Nah...Pat's convinced--convinced, I tell you--that the immigration bill is de facto amnesty and that's going to result in our borders being overrun and turning the US into a "third world nation."

Luckily, Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) is on hand to temper Buchanan's great "Brown People" fear by pointing out that this is hardly the first time that citizens of the US have been suspicious of new arrivals--in fact, not that long ago, Pat's Irish ancestors wouldn't have been looked upon well:

Immigrants have contributed immensely to the fabric and the structure of our great American society and they continue to do so today. The same arguments Pat makes today are the arguments made in the past. They were wrong then and they're wrong today.
