Holst wrote The Planets during the height of World War I and nowhere does the impact of that calamitous event show itself more powerfully than in "Mars, The Bringer of War." The entire suite is probably the most popular classical music ever written by an English composer. Holst was a devotee of astrology (not astronomy particularly) and Nicholas Meyer, director of Star Trek VI, was apparently a devotee of Holst's.
