MoveOn To Push Hard For Social Security Expansion

"Turn the conversation around. Tell Congress to expand Social Security."

MoveOn.org launched a new television ad on Wednesday calling on Congress to expand Social Security.

"Even with rising prices for seniors, politicians are pushing to cut Social Security," the narrator says. "Instead, we need to find ways to increase benefits."

"Turn the conversation around. Tell Congress to expand Social Security."

A coalition of progressive groups struck back at think tank the Third Way recently for denouncing a bill to increase Social Security benefits, as well as its most-high profile sponsor, Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). Although Third Way bills itself as a Democratic think tank, it should more appropriately be called a Wall Street think tank. Lee Fang at The Nation highlighted how the group gets its money from corporate lobbying firms and GOP donors. Progressives also called on Democratic lawmakers who are affiliated with the group to cut ties with it and denounce the editorial.

Warren's office released a letter Tuesday to six large financial institutions calling on them to voluntarily disclose their donors. The letter came the day after the Wall Street Journal op-ed, written by Third Way's president Jon Cowan and senior vice president Jim Kessler, urged Democrats not to follow Warren over the "populist cliff."

The ad is scheduled to run on CNN and MSNBC in the Washington, D.C. area.
