A veteran Newark police detective who flashed his gun at a motorist in 2012 will forfeit his job and spend a year in a court program.

NEWARK — A veteran Newark police detective who flashed his gun at a motorist in 2012 will forfeit his job and spend a year in a court program that gives defendants a chance to avoid criminal convictions, Essex County prosecutors say.

Ugo Bellomo - the brother-in-law of Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio - will also have to serve 10 hours of community service, according to the terms of a sentence issued today by Superior Court Judge Martin Cronin in Newark. He will not be allowed to possess a firearm and will be barred from taking a job with another law enforcement agency.
