Forty-three years ago today, The New York Times published the first in a series of excerpts from a classified Pentagon study of US involvement in Vietnam. The report, which had been leaked to The Times by Daniel Ellsberg, a DoD employee who’d grown disillusioned with the war, revealed that the US government had been lying to the public about both America’s goals in the conflict and its progress in achieving them.
