Gillespie Adviser: 'Total Dem Sweep, Crushing Numbers, It's Over'
See what happens when Democrats turn out?
As you may already know, Democrat Ralph Northam is the next governor of Virginia. With a 3-5 point margin predicted, no one expected the race to be called within a half hour of the polls closing -- and no one expected the blue wave that washed over Virginia tonight. By the time it's all over, Democrats may control the House of Delegates and finally get to vote for the Medicaid expansion.
Anderson Cooper asked his reporter about the scene in Gillespie headquarters tonight.
The reporter said it didn't look good.
"I've been in contact with the senior Republican adviser, this is someone who has direct knowledge of the campaign and looking closely at these numbers, this person described this to me tonight as a total Dem sweep," he said.
The adviser described the results as "crushing" numbers and said it was over. He also said if was a referendum on the Trump presidency.
"We did not expect this would be a race we could call. Not that we've called it yet but right now I can tell you, Anderson, Republicans here in Richmond are not impressed at all with the votes."
"That was a Republican saying these things to you?" an incredulous Cooper said.
"Yes, this was a senior Republican adviser, someone in the room seeing these numbers come in. This is someone who understands what's happening with this race and he told me tonight it is over."
